WARNING: Bad Experience with Rose Petal Floral!

I found Rose Petal Floral on Craigslist and hired her (Trang Vo) to do flowers for my wedding, which was three weeks ago. On my wedding day she showed up 1 1/2 hours (yes, 90 minutes) late with my flowers; she got there after most of the guests had arrived and we had to push the ceremony back 1/2 an hour. Not only that, but she did not call or make any attempt to let anyone know that she was running late.

The flowers looked okay to start, but my bouquet was falling apart half way through the reception, the flowers on my mothers hand corsage literally fell off, and the men's boutineers were wilted. Notice on her website that there are no testimonials.....Stay away unless you want her to ruin your wedding day like she did mine. Feel free to email me with questions as I would never want any bride to go through what I had to!

Do yourself a favor and don't work with her. She is just starting out and is very unprofessional. Because of her I was crying my eyes out on my wedding day!

My most recent commission was for a wedding shrine for an outdoor wedding in Oregon that was a three-day event, one part Burning Man, one part Renaissance Fair, and the rest was the creative contributions of the delightful couple. A shrine or altar is a devotional object, a three-dimensional assemblage with a wood base somewhat like a cabinet or box, depending on your your needs. It can be a memory object, containing momentos of your wedding, or be a part of the ceremony and/or reception itself.

This bride and groom wanted their guests to complete the shrine with embellishments I provided in keeping with their theme. I duplicated the beautiful colors of the invitation and painted the base, a intricately carved antique wall cabinet about 18"x9"x4" with two doors opening into a large interior recess, and two drawers underneath. I applied a collage of images, both those provided by the couple, and from Asian and Indian art (their theme) on flat areas of the surface, and applied gold leaf to the molding and elements of the carvings. I antiqued the finish, and sent it off with more collage images (peel and stick), handmade paper on which the guests could write their good wishes to put in the drawers, and three-dimensional objects that would coordinate well, such as hand-blown glass beads, Asian coins, hand-painted and embellished tiles, pressed flowers, and so on. I even included an easy-to-use adhesive method to avoid sticky mess. The couple was ecstatic and the guests had a great time helping to create a completely personal work of art that will have great meaning for years to come.

That's just one example. Hand-bound guestbooks and favor containers that are themselves beautiful keepsakes are other specialties. I will soon be posting photos on my site of the shrine as I sent it, and the couple will be sending me photos of the finished product which I will post when I receive them.

I’d like to share something with the rest of you. More than a year ago I was just hanging out on-line and out of the blue someone instant messaged me. Normally I ignore the random people that do that, due to the fact that I guess long haired white guys are appealing to gay men from India. Let’s just say my ignore list is filled with lots of names I cannot even pronounce.

Anyway I took a chance on this certain someone and started to chat with them. It turned out she was an honest to goodness women, who was not looking to meet a man in America to marry in hopes of getting a Green Card.

Over the next several days we chatted and found that we had a lot of things in common. Some how I knew even after just chatting a little here and there, that she was someone that I would like to meet. As it turned out she lived in another state, but she was in the same time zone at least.

We started to talk about meeting one another, exchanging ideas on how we could accomplice it. The idea that we agree upon was that we would meet, me coming to see her, make her dinner and then settle in to watch a movie and share a bucket of popcorn. Simply enough?

Well, for reason that we have now discussed and have resolved she dropped off the face of the earth. Needless to say that I was crushed, you might think that is kind of weird to feel that way about a person that you only chatted with on-line and a couple of times on the phone.

She and I talked a few times during the following months, and even with her half way across the country one time and all the way across the country another, I still had this feeling about her. A feeling that made me compare everyone I met, women at least, to this phantom female that touch me in a way that I cannot describe even now.

And just like before, out of the blue I was checking my voicemail there she was again after a long absence. I have the voice mail still saved. I called her back and we started we had left off. That feeling that was resting in the pit of my stomach grew stronger and rose up higher in my chest.

Now she is back at the point that we started this adventure and we talk every day. Which is something that makes each even brighter. I cannot think of going through a day at work or even just staying at home without hearing her voice at least once.

I bet you are all wondering what this all is leading to. Since I have been introduce to Tribe and this one in particular, I would like to ask this certain person a very special question. If she would have me I would love to become her Tribe husband. (I hope that is the right term.) Of course I would like to go through all of the motions of waiting for a special moment, in a place that each of us would remember for the rest of our lives and get down on one knee, take hold of her hand and look up into her eyes as these words slip from between my lips…

“Annemarie would you marry me?”

Just a note, I bet you think it is weird that no where in this I have used the big “L” word. That is because she and I have made an agreement that neither of us, no matter how much we want to, will utter that word until we can look into one another’s eyes when we do so. Because a word like that carries a lot of weight and loses some of its meaning when you read it typed across the screen with a blinking cursor at the end.

Pagan ceremonies

So, my boyfriend and I are getting married next November on the terrace at the Bellagio. I'm terribly excited, as may be obvious from the fact that the wedding is over a year away and I've already almost finished planning.

But the thing I'm wondering about is whether the officiant would mind giving a pagan ceremony. It's not that much different from other ceremonies, except it invokes the God and Goddess and instead of, "I do," the bride and groom both respond to the priest with, "By my honor let it be so." This part, though, is my absolute favorite:

In the begining of the world, the God and Goddess gave humankind five elements to nuture us physically, enrich us mentally, and teach us spiritual truths. The air, represented here by incense, fulls us with vital breath, and gives flight to our hopes and dreams. It teaches the lesson of creativity and flexibility so you may grow together despite the winds of change. (The minister places a pinch of powdered incense into an open sachet)

Water, represented by a seashell, reminds thee to flow with life's ever moving current gently, to rain our feelings lightly on one another so as to nourish and refresh. (The minister places the seashell into the open sachet)

Earth, represented by this stone, is thy foundation; a place upon which to bein building thine relationship one step at a time. (The minister places the stone into the open sachet)

Fire, symbolized by this match, purifies and energizes thy efforts, bringing passion and the brilliant light of truth. (The minister places the match into the open sachet)

Finally, spirit, symbolized by this white string, rejoices the soul and binds all things together into the spark of magic through the law of love. (The minister binds the sachet and gives it to the bride)

I think the whole ceremoy is beautiful and unique, but that part especially, I think, is meaningful.

Does anyone think that the officiant would have a problem with a ceremony like that? Should I look into booking our own?
