Golden Era of Egyptian Dance Workshops?

topic posted Fri, November 2, 2007 - 9:23 AM by  Unsubscribed
Anyone teach these type of workshops? If so, how do you structure the class? Do use clips, teach choreography to a classical song and use signature movements of dancers like Tahia or Samia? Was the class sucessful?

Or have you attended workshops by someone teaching this style? What did you like about the workshop? What kind of material did the workshop cover?

Just curious and want to start a discussion.
Thanks,
Tammy

I do teach a couple of workshops on Golden Era, but mine are not dance technique workshops. Mine are both lecture/video format.

One of mine is "Dance in Egyptian Cinema." This one covers how dance itself and dancers as characters are depicted in the Egyptian movie industry. For each clip, I talk about which movie it comes from, how that particular dance scene fits into the plot and/or character development, and what was happening in Egyptian society as a whole at that time. It focuses particularly on the Golden Era, with a small amount of post-1960. I offer this in a 60-minute form and a 90-minute form. The difference between the 60-minute versus the 90-minute lies in how many clips are shown and discussed. This one focuses entirely on dance scenes that have appeared in movies. I've presented it in Ontario, Minnesota, and Iowa so far.

My other one is "Oriental Dance in Egypt: Evolution of a Performing Art". That one starts with what Egyptian dance looked like in the past, and traces the cultural and societal influences that shaped Oriental dance into the form we know today. It covers stuff like who the audiences were at various points in time, and how that influenced the form the dance took. There are some still photos from the era before moving pictures with discussion of what they show, then movie dance scenes for the Golden Era, then dance concert footage for more recent dancers (Fifi Abdo, Soheir Zaki). There's a 2-hour version of this one and a 4-hour version. Again, the difference between the longer vs shorter version lies in how many clips are shown and discussed. I've presented it in Wisconsin, Nebraska, Oregon, and Iowa so far.

    Hi, Tammy:

Yes, I teach these types of workshops. I have a Level One 7-Day Intensive Seminar that focuses on this type of style and I include videos from all the past dancers. I've been doing this since two years ago and have publicized it on most Tribe and Yahoo sites.

My 7-DIS's have all been extremely successful. If you would like feedback, I will be happy to send along email addresses for you to contact the registrants.

I covered all dances by Taheyia Karioka, Samia Gamal, Samiha Tawfiq, Na'amet Mokhtar, Suhair Zaki, Fifi Abdo, N'eema Akef, Nagwa Fouad, and so many more. I also teach this style EXACTLY and use the footage to prove the movement is exactly how I teach it.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact me. I am scheduling at least three more of these seminars next year. Level Two is for those 7-DIS graduates who want to learn more about the musicians that wrote the music that the belly dancers danced to.

    Take care,

I also offer a 2-hour workshop and show dance scenes of the different dancers and talk about their lives. I also provide the opportunity to purchase the DVDs of the dancers that I have assembled over a 10-year period.

I've been doing this for the past two years and it has been extremely successful. It's amazing that more people know about some of the not-so-known dancers like Samiha Tawfique or Na'met Mokhtar now. I'm very proud of the fact that my students knew about them at least two to three years ago.

Thank you again Sausan! Keep up the good work on your projects. Next Spring, I'll have to start buying and collecting your DVDs, specially looking forward to the Fairuz DVD coming out.

Are your manuals a good tool to buy, without attending your seminar, to use injunction with the DVDs?

I have several of Sausan's DVDs and I LOVE them! In my opinion they are invaluable. I'm saving up so I can purchase more!

      Thanks Tammy and Sausan,

        Your Welcome Azeeza!
I'm hoping this will be a wonderful and useful site to learn from the experts like Sausan and Shira. Now wouldn't it be great if Bahaia and Shareen El Safy join the site also. Thank you for the recommendation on Sausan DVDs. I'm planning to start buying them in the Spring. I'm currently replacing my Shareen El Safy videos with her new DVDs, one month at a time (have 5 more DVDs to go). Plus there is my addiction to Little Egypt's workshop videos. Hopefully soon the Fifi Abdo videos might be available (if they produce them???).
