I moderate two tribes of very personal subjects, which the members of (in both cases) have felt much safer having be entirely private. For this reason, on both tribes, I chose the setting that only the moderator could approve membership requests. In various ways, I had the existence of these tribes listed. It was not difficult for anyone to post to me and ask for membership.
Both of these tribes are about certain aspects of mental illness; some members are not always very clear-headed. While I was away recently and unaware of the change in options for membership, the least stable member on one tribe added someone to our membership who went on a total rampage, destroying much of the trust and safety which had previously existed.
I REALLY do think that the option of membership through the moderator only should and needs to be reinstated for private tribes.

Re: Concern over member invites
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 2:00 PMI'm not sure I understand.
<< I chose the setting that only the moderator could approve membership requests.>>

<<While I was away recently and unaware of the change in options for membership>>
What changes?
When you open a tribe that you moderate, under 'manage tribe' you will find these options:
Members may invite others to join (private or moderated tribes only)
Notify me when new members join this tribe
Syndicate this tribe's discussion board (public or moderated tribes only)
A tribe member would only be able to invite someone new to the tribe if you had selected that option.
How do you have your tribes set in this regard?
{sooo very sorry to hear of your tribe being violated in that way. : ( } -

Re: Concern over member invites
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:26 PMThanks for your understanding, Denisey. There youd ro be an option where only the moderator could approve membership requests. That option seems to have been removed. -

Re: Concern over member invites
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 8:34 PMI kist checked several of my moderated tribes and all the controls are as I placed them-if the box is checked it means any member may invite, if unchecked it means I am sole approval.
I once had a friend invite someopne into a Private tribe of mine, so I am pretty aware now of where I let people invite their friends. -

Re: Concern over member invites
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 9:26 PM(Laughing!) Hey, Qatana, we may have to duke it out over who does the most typos! Matbe I once know that by not checking any box made me the sole acceptor of new members. It's quite possible that I forgot. I will go and change that now. Thanks for the info! -

Re: Concern over member invites
Thu, May 15, 2008 - 10:48 PMregarding typos:
if you can't manage to proofread your post before clicking "submit", then you can hit the back button on your browser and correct errors before clicking "submit" again.
anything that would permit people to edit posts after the fact would create fertile ground for mayhem.
the semi-limited editing function is really best the way it is.
