As far as I know this function has NEVER worked and there are no results of people voting. Will this function EVER become active. If so, when? If not, why not take that "option" off the screen? I'm not being bitchy. Just in case someone wants to jump me shit case. Just sayin'. : ) I brought this up in the past and think the response was something to the effect of "It's not currently functional but may be at some point in the future." I'm just wondering / curious if the status of this answer has changed or not. No big deal either way.

I Only Want One Thing

I love tribe and have been a gold star supporter since the program started. I don't like to whine, so this is more of a suggestion than a complaint.

The one thing I really want is for Tribe to be stable and always available (but brief downtimes in the middle of the night for maintenance are of course ok). I think Tribe is fine just the way it is... simple and straightforwad. I don't sit around wishing for new snazzy features. I use tribe as a secondary form of communication with my friends (second to email). I am really am happy with the basics and would rather see stability than new stuff.

So there you have it. I would love my monthly payment to go towards creating a simple and stable system that is always dependable.. that is really what is most important to me. I would guess there are a fair amount of other gold star folks who feel the same?

I'm frustrated. Period. I can't remember when I was able to get on on a regular basis. I'm close to shutting it down.
I don't want to do that...I have a dear fondness for tribe...I met my wife on tribe (which is a good thing). But....cmon. I know it's a tough job...but man I'm paying for this...and I can't get on. My posts don't show up half the time.

sorry for the negative nature of this...but like I said, I'm frustrated and tired of paying money for something that doesn't work.

The Sun shines on Tribe.net

So, today I basically got the go-ahead to go full speed ahead with the rewrite project. I have convinced management that I know how to scale Ruby on Rails, and with John Adams (one of our contractors) now working on twitter.com (one of my favorite websites which also happens to be 100% RoR) I should have a wealth of data coming back for the bleeding edge development we are doing.

I think you folks should get not only the most stable but the shiniest and the coolest toys to play with, since SOME of you are paying for it. Because of this, I've entered into talks with Sun and MySQL to run the next version of tribe.net on nothing but Sun Microsystems equipment with Enterprise level database support. We're also going to be using some bleeding edge technologies like computing clouds to make this as cost efficient as possible. I know this is probably wacky moon talk to more than a few of my friends and people reading it, but these are all good things.

Because of Sun's support for this project, I feel a lot more comfortable pushing the bleeding edge of what can be done. I'm also having fun looking at machines with four processors in them and 256 GB of RAM. That Sun product catalog is a lot like porn to me, except you can't get a PDF sticky. One of the things that I am particularly proud of is throwing tribe's gauntlet into the ring of making Ruby on Rails scalable. I'm not the brightest person on the planet, but it seems like this shouldn't be rocket science. We also have two interns working on Ruby on Rails and AJAX/UI code for us, and you'll probably be thanking them more than me for the minor tweaks that tribe.net has needed for a year or so now.

The new timeline goes a little like this:

Proof of concept (July 9th)
Beta test roll out (August 1st)
Tribe.net 3.0 rollout (September 1st)

Due to certain efficiencies in coding in Ruby on Rails, we may have the beta-test sooner rather than later. Paid subscribers will have the first whack at the new Tribe.net servers, as we're setting up the cluster specifically for them first. Once we have the bugs shaken out, we'll launch the site for all members.

In other words... ask Mark Pincus if you see him at Burning Man!

Not that I want to get lumped in with the bitchers and whiners but I am curious & Tribe has been at par with its worst donut days / no access these past 2 weeks. It is really getting infurariating & before anyone chimes in with if you cant log on go do something else, there are social things that I rely upon tribe for and I am usually doing at least one other thing those times when I am trying to log onto tribe. I just hate to see the best site around slowly die.

Database Problems -- update!

Hi folks:

Over the past few days we had a problem with one of our database readers. I have finally fixed the problem and I'm adding another reader to the mix later today. I am sure if you have any site stability problems you'll all post it here, I'll be checking this tribe to make sure folks are having a better and easier time of it today. In the meantime, I have been up all night and I am going to get some sleep now!

Also: I am in Los Angeles today! I did this round of work from 600 miles away! I just love this modern age we live in.

In the last half hour I had to open every single kink and photography tribe I belong to to find the same item crossposted. Thats like 12different tribes with the same post, which technically should be a Listing but nibody reads listings. Then i had to open every dance related tribe i belong to for the same reason. Really, just cuz I finally got broadband don't mean I wanna be opening tribes all day to see the same damn listing and of course can't think of any way around it short of posting the same rant on every tribe that has the same cross-post on it, thereby contributing to the problem.
And then there are the threads that I have no interest in reading that I have to open a trribe a hundred times a day to clear such as the RSVP thread BaGG. Can't I just ignore that thread without having to open the BaGG page every time somebody posts a one word response?

WTF?

Ok, on my computer my home page is currently showing as it was shortly before 5:00 today. My message page showed "as new" a message I had gotten around 3:00 with no sign of subsequent messsages that I know I got. My Blackberry shows my homepage as at just past 9:00 Pm with a mew message that I am just about to open. Yup, its a new message, and the ones that were missing on my comoputer are there on my phone.So now I'm gonna open up Firefox & see what that looks like and copy this posting there just in case it gets lost when I hit submit.
Makes ya wonder exactly what real time is.Hmm, Firefox looks current so its my IE, right? Oy.

I don't know Sparkle, and I don't know the true circumstances behind her not being able to log into her profile and I know you are *really* busy with all sorts of stuff at the moment.. but not being able to get into your profile would totally totally suck big time..

Assuming she can prove she is entitled to access to the profile - is there anyway to help her out ? It may simply have you stumped (it happens even to Wizards) but it may also have fallen off the radar . ..

I have this tribe and it seems like there are two tribes. One has 7 members and more threads and 2 pictures. The other has 14 members missing threads and 1 picture. I was posting on the one with 14 members and it asked me to sign in again and when I did and came back to the tribe I was on the 7 member tribe and the thread I had just posted was missing. I figured it may just be some Tribe glitch or data corruption or something. Then someone said someone may be trying to get my password and nor I'm all paranoid someone already has as my account was "fished" a while back. Too weird.

More T-shirt News

I just heard back from the t-shirt printer. They are in the midst of prin ting up the shirts, and I'll be able to go pick them up on Thursday of next week!

The only problem with this is that I won't be in town next week -- I'll be gone until the 24th. I'll still be working on tribe.net but I'll be about 600 miles south in Los Angeles. When I get back on the 24th, we'll start mailing t-shirts out.

This lady lives like 8 miles from me. For those not familiar with Danville, many rich as well as famous people live there. The guy that owned ENIGMA MOTORS in Dublin lives there in Blackhawk too. If anyone knows a lawyer that will work pro-bono I need some help. The DA's investigation is taking WAY too long. I totally identify with this lady in a BIG way but I wouldnt go this far. I wouldnt do more than egg the fucker or waterballoon or make non-stop phone calls stating I WANT MY FUCKING MONEY YOU FUCKIN' FUCK!!!! I'm from Texass originally and it really is difficult to not take the law into my own hands and let "justice" work itself out on the side of criminals. I'M FUCKING PISSED AS HELL!!!!

I suppose I'm mixing my own bs with this story. Just cuz she lives near that fucker. My car is supposedly in Russia. My finance company is going to litigate against me now and I can't afford 3,000 - 5000 dollars for a retainer fee with no guarantee of working on a percentage.

receipt for auto-renew subscription

Best computer for cheapest price?

I've been considering getting a new one but not sure what is best & want to pay as little as possible. We have an employee purchase program at work too. I was looking at dell but have no idea wtf to do. My new man has an Apple notebook that is white plastic. It's nice. If I get a notebook I want a mouse for it though. I HATE those little pads you have to use to move the cursor around. Total suckage. All I know is I want the most bang for my buck and it has to burn cd's.

it would be great if tribe could eventually have an automatic refresh. i have had so many problems trying to use the tribe chat feature. i dont know anyone who has gotten this feature to work for them. it gets old to have to refresh the page constantly when messaging back and forth. wouldnt it be great if the home page refreshed? yes, getting the unresponsive script and the all the other problems is a priority, yet i would really appreciate to see this feature worked into the new tribe 3.0.

I had to try to view my messages page EIGHT times to find out that of the seven messages waiting for me, four of them announce the floating turd in one of my tribes keeps joining that tribe after he's been asked not to come back, and two of them are inflammatory emails from him.

I am not a sports fan, but I find that in order to get this tribe.net rewrite done, I have to take someone to a baseball game. It's getting worse

I'm getting "connection reset" errors with more and more regularity now. About every ten minutes something weird happens. Sometimes I have to sign back in. Sometimes I just refresh the page (about four times) and things will pick up where they left off.

It's gotten worse and I've tried to contact tribe.net about it I don't know how many times, but...is it just me or is it a complete BITCH to post and view events now? Every single time I try to post an event it reads ERROR, then I end up posting it multiple times because it said error, and whenever I try to go to view my own events it tells me I have no events posted when I actually have a quite a few posted...errrr!

So I'm sorry for the multiple postings, I paid my tribe.net dues because I used the service so much I figured it was worth it to support them. But the service seems to have gotten so shitty I'm wondering what the hell I supported them for...bastards. Anyway, such is the way of online community...perhaps myspace really is superior.

Moderators on Tribe

Many of us are moderators of tribes. Big ones, medium size, even very small tribes with just a few people, perhaps just starting out. One of the fun things about Tribe is to be able to start new tribes and moderate them.

Questions about moderating sometime come up, whether you are someone new to moderating, or have plenty of experience but a situation presents itself that you haven't come across before, or maybe you have, but do not feel comfortable with the way you have handled it. Of course, one could ask questions about moderating right here in the Gold Star Tribe, I'd love to read those topics here. But I also think a tribe where every member is a moderator has its place as well.

There is a tribe now for active moderators on Tribe. We like to discuss moderating and at the same time are receptive to other topics that may come up. While the subject of moderating is a focal point, threads can freely drift off topic. It should be a useful as well as a fun place to check in on.

I'm calling all moderators to join the Mod Squad. It is a moderated tribe, because I'll want to check that every entering member is a moderator of at least one tribe. But if I can see from your profile that you are a moderator I will accept your membership request right away. All Gold Star accounts are especially welcome. If your profile does not show which tribes you moderate, just write me a message pointing me in the right direction.

Tribe on the Blackberry

I have a Blackberry now, the Palm Treo 755p met a horrible death, good riddance to that piece of crap. Tribe wouldn't work with the Palm but does work with the Blackberry.

However, the pages take forever to load because of the graphics. While Tribe is being reinvented, can a SSR device friendly style sheet be made to cut down on load times? Maybe reduced size graphics too or something?

Darren you need to add a "SPAM" or "Report to Tribe" button to the private message section. I received 2 more of the "Hi I saw your profile please email me at ....." generic phishing emails yesterday, get a couple a month and there is no easy way to report them and get these false profiles removed from Tribe.

The #1 thing that I'd love to see is a chat app built in like they have on Facebook. Talk about use - that'd be a hugely useful tool. Then again, maybe that's the problem? The bandwidth?

Concern over member invites

I moderate two tribes of very personal subjects, which the members of (in both cases) have felt much safer having be entirely private. For this reason, on both tribes, I chose the setting that only the moderator could approve membership requests. In various ways, I had the existence of these tribes listed. It was not difficult for anyone to post to me and ask for membership.

Both of these tribes are about certain aspects of mental illness; some members are not always very clear-headed. While I was away recently and unaware of the change in options for membership, the least stable member on one tribe added someone to our membership who went on a total rampage, destroying much of the trust and safety which had previously existed.

I REALLY do think that the option of membership through the moderator only should and needs to be reinstated for private tribes.

...when someone in a tribe is batshit crazy? It's an unmoderated tribe, in essence, and this guy is clearly "off his meds." And disruptive. I don't want to contact TOU guy, but I don't want to wade through the meaningless posts, even if I cut through it by skimming or skipping his posts. I don't like the idea of kicking someone off tribe because they can't function.

I guess the answer is keep waiting for a killfile.

Updates in the Tribe Bugs Tribe

I knew I had been subscribed to this Tribe, but I was surprised when I randomly came over here and noticed that I have not been receiving notifications about new topics and comments. I thought this tribe was quiet.

I spend lots of time in the Tribe.net Bugs tribe and there are many issues being discussed and no Tribe.net response. Can someone please read through that tribe and give us an update on what's going on with those bugs? The one that keeps coming up over and over is the problems with the listings/event module.

I had unjoined it and was on her Allnighters tribe and then B came in and did his special work and I didnt want to be on that tribe anymore because of his mere presence. Then somehow I got in a tift with inna and called her a bad word. : ( I don't blame anyone but myself for that but that's how I felt at the time. Anyway, we havent spoken since. And that was a while back. Months ago. Now all of a sudden I am on the Politics tribe again. I sent her a pm to inquire but she never responded. I don't want to post if she doesnt want me too. I honestly have no idea how I am back on that tribe. Even if she was cool with me posting I'm not sure if I would or even stay on the tribe. I may just unjoin again because of the volatile way it used to be. Who knows maybe it's not like that anymore. I don't know as I havent checked it out for a long time. ANYWAY, I was just wondering how it is that I am all of a sudden back on there again. And then I didnt want her to think I had "snook" back on in that way that some people know how but I do not. I don't want to be on there if she doesnt want me on. But honestly I have no idea how I am back on her tribe. It just started popping up on my tribes list again. Or who know, possibly I sent a request in the past and she just now accepted me back? No idea.

time-delayed bans for trolls

Assuming that it is futile to attempt to ban someone from a tribe, has there been any discussion on putting some sort of time-lag on a person once they've been removed from a tribe? Say, once they've been removed, that ID can't come back in for a month or two?

The Big Announcement -- tribe.net 3.0

The big news is basically that we are completely rewriting tribe.net. We'll have it relaunched in July. I have a deployment schedule that is fairly ambitious, and we are nailing that down right now. It's going to basically look the same, but there will be a lot of improvements that will make the site faster and far more stable. It will also have all of the old data that isn't complete cruft, such as your friends that have been active in the past two years, your blogs, your tribes and tribe posts... everything.

I will probably release a press release in the near future (say this week?) about this. This will detail the Roadmap towards the release date, and then you'll see when you'll be able to try out the beta of the new site. We have already picked people to be the alpha testers. There are some pretty big names associated with this press release, and it's been about 4 months in the making. In the meantime, make sure everyone that wants to keep their tribe.net account logs in! Tell your friends about this and tell them you heard it first because you're a Gold Star member, please. It's because of you folks that we can afford to make this change, which is a lot cheaper than maintaining the old system.

Sent invitations feature

I would like to see some changes to what one can see when one looks at one's sent invitations. Currently all that comes up is a list of people one has invited to tribe.net. I think it would be very useful to also have a list of sent friend invitations and sent tribe invitations.

Right now on tribe invitations all one gets is a list of tribes others have invited you to, and if you have not yet accepted or declined they are listed. It would be more useful to have a list, or perhaps a second list of sent tribe invitations of the people you have sent tribe invitations to, and whether or not they have accepted, declined or it's still pending (remind is the word used on sent invitations currently).

Similar with friend invitations. It would be very useful to see if a friend invitation has indeed been sent as expected (since there is no initial yellow background message at the top of the page as there is when one sends a PM saying your message has been sent), and to have them listed to be able to tell if the friend invitation has been declined, accepted or is still pending.

I would also like to see a way to delete sent invitations the way one can delete PMs. Right now I have a long list of people whom I've sent tribe.net invitations to, and I don't like looking at it because the people who never accepted nor declined, who just ignored it leave a bad taste and it is effecting the way I think of them when I see them in real life. I prefer someone to either accept or decline, and if they do neither I don't want to have to see that ignored tribe.net invitation for the rest of my life every time I look at that list.

If the other two kinds of sent invitations are put in place with the writing of the new tribe.net, I would also like to see check boxes for deleting those sent invitations (friend invites and tribe invites), so I don't have to look at them indefinately either.

I certainly have no problem with the particular subject matter, but find his hogging of the front page extremely offensive - it's just another kind of spam! Reset errors

I use either Safari or Firefox to visit tribe. On Safari, I consistently get "Safari cannot access this page" errors, particularly when trying to get to my home page.

On Firefox, I get "The connection was reset" errors when trying to visit the home page, and sometimes when trying to post a message.

These things only happen on tribe.

Region-free DVD players

Okay, I've already posted this in two tribes, but I've only gotten one response so far, and since paid members can post anything in here, and this tribe has over a thousand members, I figure I'll give it one more shot. I'll delete this thread when I decide on a player, or in 24 hours, whichever comes first. (Or if enough people yell at me for posting something totally unrelated and therefore wasting everyone's time, or for crossposting, or whatever anyone else feels like yelling at me for. I have a very delicate nature, you see.)

Can anyone recommend a particular region-free DVD player, and/or a particular site for buying one? It all seems very sketchy. I was looking through the site http://www.regioncodefreedvd.com/dvdorig.html , and it sounds like they get new DVD players, remove them from the box, and then hack them to remove the region encoding before selling them. Are there any that come region-free out of the factory?

I just want a cheap-o, no-frills player for British DVDs (region 2). I don't need HDMI output, or any other extras, just the standard red/white/yellow cable. I found several for $60-$95, but some reviews talk about skipping and such. But maybe it's just when upconverting, I don't know. My TV's crap, so it's not like I'm going to get a stellar picture anyway. I just want to take it out of the box, plug it in, and get a reasonable picture without pausing and skipping and stuff. Right now I'm leaning toward buying this one from Amazon and performing the hack myself:

A serious request

I have a few requests. They have nothing to do with the chat server or with my premium subscription, or with t-shirts.

Could the search function actually work? It used to be that you could separate your search out to only search in people's profiles, tribes, blogs, etc. Now, that doesn't work, and any type of search involves wading through 1000s of entries.

And on another issue, there are hundreds, if not more, tribes with zero or one member, the moderator. Would it be possible to these to be deleted? There are over 61,000 tribes, but we all know that have very little (and maybe never had) any activity. Like tribes that were started in 2004, have 3 or 4 threads, and no one has posted since 2004, or half of the threads were started by "Unsubscribed".

I'm trying to find tribes that are geared toward people who work in the non-profit world, or orgs that work on environmental issues, but I just plain can't. Wading through 1000s of records is not how I want to spend my time. So I went to browse tribes and clicked on "other" since I'm not sure where to find this type of tribe. The first two entries are for blank tribes. One has no information, and the other, "23" has 0 members and the moderator is "Unsubscribed". This isn't a rare occurrence, and I'm sure adds to the slowness of the site.

What would be great is if there was a specific email address that we could send these defunct tribe links to and they could be deleted at your leisure? This would also be a great volunteer position for someone. (I know I love clean databases and would be willing to volunteer to do this.) The specific email address is so that routine help messages aren't combined with these requests, and also so that Darren doenst' get inundated with this information on his already very long to-do list.

Error reports

Every once in a while tribe hiccups and I get this screen that asks me what I was doing when it happened. I'm a little nonplussed and I say something like "I was trying to post to a thread" which seems really unuseful but it's what I was doing. I always feel like I should have been trying to thread a mobius wire through the gizmo as part of my plot to take over the world and I'm lucky the computer didn't explode, but I haven't been and I'm never doing anything unusual when it happens.
Does someone read these reports?
Are they actually useful for something?

I've been following the t-shirt threads, the rants, the "why doesn't this work like this?" threads and many others on here, and have kept quiet. Now that spring has come back to Wisconsin (if 35 and sunny = Spring) it makes me think of rebirth. And that's what I see this tribe as the opportunity for.

According to my Tribe Card I've been a member since 09/23/03. In the past 5 years, through Tribe.net, I've:
* read and shared hundreds of recipes
* made several dozen friends, most who don't live in Milwaukee
* found a handful of folks who I'm proud to call my lovers
* waited out the storms around TOU issues, censorship, the evil red phase, the Dount Freak Out, Tribecasting, and more
* learned about new music and films, my own Judaism, alternative energy and technology
* moderated a number of tribes, some very active, some with only one member
* conversed about Hello Kitty, The Muppets, Neil Stevenson, Keith Haring, Alan Ginsberg, and other famous peeps
* Used Tribe.net for organizing in my city, other places in the US, and internationally
* read about and compared hot sauces
* and so so much more

About 2 and a half years ago I set my ad-blocking software to kill, and have been having an ad-free Tribe experience (and most of the rest of my web browsing, too.) On the other hand, I check into Tribe about a gajillion times a day. I use it for (and from) work, home, and when I'm traveling. At times (like the holidaze) it's been the only think keeping me sane... feeling connected to people from all over.

Before I paid for a year of Tribe Premium I thought about it long and hard. I realized that I had gotten SO much out of this site and the people involved (including a former Tribe employee who I'm very glad is a friend) that it made sense to support it. Sure, having a 2nd Tribe t-shirt will be nice when it comes, but it's not why I paid in.

Over and over I get why Tribe *does* work. It's so different from anything out there. When I describe it to people I mention F'ster, MySp*ce, F-book, and how their all about who you know. We are, too, to a degree. What keeps bringing me back, and my partner, and all the people we've invited, is the OTHER stuff. The sharing of knowledge and information. The passions of whatever we're into, weather it's punk music, bread baking, hot guys and girls, Burners (though I'm not part of that community) and what we all represent, both to ourselves and to others.
The sillyness (goofin' on celebs, Wrong Foods) , and seriousness (breakups, illnesses, deaths), the partying and praying and learning. From what I've read, the only thing that comes close was the WELL, and that's so ancient it's almost unmentionable.

It's for those reasons that I sent my $60. I'll do it again in December, and maybe the December after that, as long as I'm getting as much out of Tribe as I have been. I suspect that most people who have gold stars feel the same.

Anyway, I think I'm done. I wanted to just say Hallelujah, to sing praise for this community, and the people who created and maintain this platform for what has become such an integral part of my life. Others, feel free to add to this, but please keep it poz.

Sounds like the name of an emo band, a bit. But anyway . . . I've noticed a trend of guys whose avatar is a close-up cock shot. Now, I'm of two minds. On the one hand, I didn't like the era of heavy censorship. On the other hand, these yahoos are always the ones who send heavy-breathing (trust me, it's audible via e-mail) friend requests--totally ignoring the standard "I don't friend you unless I know you" disclaimer many folks have.

So I wrote into a topic a couple weeks ago asking about changing out the credit card that I am paying my gold subscription with because I had searched and searched in my account pages here to no avail (and sent two emails to tribe which I never heard back from at all) and some nice person finally told me to go directly to the PayPal website (which I never use and so have to have my password sent to me every freakin time) and change it out there. Did that. Kind of a pain but oh well. Added new card. Made it my main one.
Today I get a notice saying my subscription is canceled and when I log in here sure enough ads galore and no gold star.....this upsets me.
I go back to PayPal and not only is the new credit card info in there but the old one is still there too (which I have not canceled yet). Whats the deal? This has been a hassle. Please re-instate me immediately. I have emailed tribe several times with no response ever.
I have already spent way too much time on this.

So, technical difficulties don't seem to be my issue. I click on tribe chat and everything fires up. Problem is, even with 4 friends online, none show up in the list of contacts.

Did I goof?

Do they have to be logged into appear?

How does all this work with Trillian anyway, I prefer that.

Walkthroughs appreciated. Instructions page would be a major bonus, if such could be added to the to-do list. No hurry at all, since I don't seem to encounter more than 3-4 friends on tribe at the same time as me anyhoo, and of those not always do I desire a chat with them. broken promises

tribe tee shirts were promised to those who paid in advance.

delivery date was back in December, January at the lasest.

no tee shirts? No explanation.

five months now we've been waiting.

That's not reasonable. It's a breach of contract.

Or just sit back and watch the sychophants and ass kissing tribe-loving trolls and weirdos start howling, demanding the critics be unsubbed, and otherwise doing the dirty work for 'em.

I like how this works. Tribe.net cheats, the ass kissers complain about those who call attention to it, and then those who called attention get unsubbed because the asskissers complained.

Internet Misrepresentation

I recieved the letter prompted by my complaint, outlaying the return policy. That I can return the blocks Order Date: April 1, 2008 (removed order number) via traceable mail. which I didnt see until I recieved a misrepresentation of the product I ordered.

Misrepresentation of what your selling is illegal. Reimburse me for the order and shipping costs. Send me a return label.

Worked lol I get reimbursed for the order. The order page for this product even though its for silly blocks is fraught with misrepresentation.
