Is the "raw food" diet for everyone?

topic posted Mon, July 10, 2006 - 10:42 PM by  Rose

I've been reading about it, I have books and checked out a few websites. About 70% of my diet is raw (some days less) - I eat a lot of large salads and raw fruits and vegetables during the day. I also make raw food in a dehydrator to make up for some other foods I cant eat (gluten, etc). I eat some organic chicken and fish, but not a large amount. Some cooked grains, such as brown, red and wild rice. I avoid dairy except for good quality butter.

I have insulin resistance/PCSO and this diet seems to work well for me but I would like to improve.

Everything I read about a raw-foods diet implies its for everyone on earth. What do you think? Does anyone have a more balanced view?

    hi Rose,

here's a link that might have some answers for you: chidiet.com/news/
(please be advised it's for raw food enthusiasts.)

some people are ardent supporters of raw foods and some nutritionists believe certain foods release their most potent nutrients only when cooked.

i believe in both and doing what feels right for you. also i used to be naive and think raw foods meant less preparation and quick and easy to do...not so, some dishes can take just as much time as a cooked meal!

    A challenge:

Name even one homo sapien sapien culture, group, tribe, or society that was 100 percent raw, or even 100 per cent vegan.

the raw food diet is probabaly not for people who are uninterested or unwilling to be one hundred percent raw food vegans. Just a possibility.

I am very gradually weaning myself into cooking my foods less, and eating more raw greens. Some like carrots, celerey , bell peppers, broccoli ... are easier for me to eat raw then vegies like kale, chard, and some other veggies. But generally i like how i feel from munching raw vegies. Never got into cooking fruits, so their not an issue. But i also prefer to spend less time cooking or preparing food to a degree. So becoming an elaborate raw foodist or cooking elaborately is less appealing to me than those who like to spend lots of time preparing food. Id rather do something else with my time like eating and getting that done with so i can do something else more interesting to me.

I love my diet which is 100% vegan and High Raw (some weeks it's 100% Raw and other weeks it's 75-80% Raw). I've never felt better (headaches pretty much gone, weight loss, clear skin (finally!) and so much more energy!) I think everyone benefits from eating more fresh Raw plant-based foods, but whether 100% Raw is for everyone I'm not sure it's necessary (definitely depends on the person). I think if someone is fighting a disease or is feeling under the weather, then being as Raw as possible will probably benefit them. I do feel fantastic on the weeks I'm 100% Raw, but I feel really great the weeks I eat 80%, too. The hard thing, for me, was not getting addicted to the "cooked" food I ate. For my cooked meals, I typically keep it very clean and it's always vegan (brown rice, veggies, hummus, tofu - for example).

For some people, committing 100% Raw is too darn stressful and stress wreaks havoc on your body, too. I recommend that people eat as much as they can Raw Vegan, and don't stress if you're not 100% Raw.

Your diet, Rose, sounds good (although I don't know about "good quality" butter). Dairy is terrible in any form, in my opinion. I have many clients and friends who have all benefited from eating a vegan diet that is high Raw, so it doesn't surprise me that this helps you, too. Congrats!
