Does anyone know...

Does anyone know where I might find info or a list of states, cities, counties or areas that are green building friendly? That is, places that will allow green building to pass a legal permitting process. Like earthship, cobb etc.

Oregon, but I imagine most are the same in that you just need to meet code and in order to prove that you get an engineers stamp.
In Oregon you can get it permitted as experimental but you need an Engineer to stamp it.
The thing to keep in mind is that they are generally scared to death of any liability if the let you do anything different.
Getting a licensed Architect or Structural Engineer to stamp and sign the plans removes most or all of the liability.
It's a game but isn;t just about all of it nowadays.

that would be a great list to have, but more than likely any such list would just skim the surface, due to the many differences between areas and what methods are deemed okay. . .there might be something on the web??

I'm going to be looking into this further and I will post what I find. I've built a few traditional houses, but I've always been interested in building a house that would work well off grid and in a place that had the right weather conditions to pull it off. Has anyone here built an off grid home? I was out in Taos a year ago looking at the earthships. Recenty, I was on the Earthship web page looking at their seminar schedule. I think it would be fun to attend one of them. I've been reading the book on how to build one. It doesn't look any harder than building a traditional house. Oregon would seem like a good place to begin. My biggest concern would be to begin a project like this and then half way through the building inspector shuts it down. I was thinking of an area other than Taos. The winter there may be to much for me. I'm hoping to find a place where it was encouraged.
