hi i just join this tribe and hope it can answer this little question.
i live on the gulf islands of canada.
i am building a green house.
i want to isolate the north wall with any material that is locally available.
i thought about saw dust. is it a possible/efficient way of doing????
i thought about horse manure.....am i crazy???
we would conceptualize a system, where we could replace the manure every couple months(as it compost itself) and then use it as soil....
i thought we could place the manure into a sealed wall so no wood would be in contact with it.
and there would be a trap to empty the wall and re-fill it.
what do you think???? does manure itself have a good isolating value??? i would think so...
any other tips recommendation????
thanks

Re: isolating with poo???
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 4:12 PMEnglish is my first language (please forgive me ;^)
so, I thought it really funny, that you would want to isolate people with poooooo !
i think that would work, and certainly, at first, no one would want to come around!
HAAHAH
No, really, poo is a great stucco, I think, if mixed right with leaves and mud...
but insulation (notice the N & U) is not the best thing to use pooo for.
Insulation essentially works by trapping air.
If you seal all the edges of a box, even a pin prick and a crack will let cold air in... Imagine a tire with a pin prick...
Air just wants to FLOW!
So, that is why cotton, or fiber with lots of air between cells works well.
Poo would let in air, but, you can insulate and have transfer of air... You just have to keep the insulation portion dry...
So, First poo, and sticks, painted with milk and honey....
and berry juice.
then, an air space then sticks with cotton packed in. then more sticks, put stucco on this and white wash the inside....
of course there are these vertical things you need to support the roof every 24 inches or so.. depending on the weight above... -

Re: isolating with poo???
Sat, February 16, 2008 - 6:52 PMYears ago, I lived on a farm. We had to use a cistern and pump to provide water to our home. The pump house was insulated with cow manure. It worked VERY well and did not need to be re-insulated ever. It was in constant use for at least five years. The structure was made from 2X4 studs and slabs of wood cut square. the manure was put into the space between the inside and outside walls. The roof was also a two-sided affair. The inside wall was installed then the manure was piled in and evened out then the outside wall was added. As I said, it worked well.
