The subject of Earthships came up in conversation tonight. A contractor buddy of mine was telling me that there is a market of used tires now and as such they are more difficult to come by. This will make the cost of Earthships more expensive. Is there a method of making an Earthship with concrete blocks?

Fri, October 30, 2009 - 3:41 PMDo you know what region your contractor buddy was referring to? As of last year I was able to salvage a large number of tires for free in Tennessee. If I remember correctly, tire retailers are legally required to collect old tires from consumers for recycling/processing and to pay a small transfer fee per tire collected. Since we were offering to come collect the tires it was cheaper for the local corporate tire retailer to donate the tires to us to build with than to pay the usual collectors to remove them. Their used tire supply depended on how much storage space they had and when the last pick up was, so plan ahead and let them know how many you will need to find out where/when to get your tires. I suggest that you call your local tire retailers and see if this is the same case in your area or not. -

Fri, October 30, 2009 - 7:03 PMHint, if it is local, go face to face, wearing working clothes and be prepared to take them on the spot. If there are restrictive legal requirements about disposal (place/facility/etc), a truck load of tyres going out the back door whilst he goes to lunch might happen. If you telephone a business it will tend to play it safe and say no if there might be any comeback. -

Sat, October 31, 2009 - 10:10 AMi used to be the manager of a tire store, though its been a few years...
reusable or retreadable tires do have value and will incur a cost....
but many tires are damaged in a way that they are not repairable--these type tires work fine and many dealers would love for you to haul them off...

Mon, November 2, 2009 - 6:19 PMGood point about coming prepared to take tires on the spot. Then again, in my above example I was able to make the arrangement with a simple long-distance phone call from three states away. Even with my funny yankee accent I had no problems doing this. Someone else came by a few days later to pick up the tires for our project.
