The Forest Service has recently called unmanaged motorized vehicle recreation a major threat to America's public lands. Plans are being drafted to deal with this problem. 93% of forest users do not use any motorized vehicles to enjoy the forests--they use their feet or bikes, or horses to travel. These methods are relatively undamaging to the wildlife or ecosystem. Motorized vehicles however, be they dirt bikes, snowmobiles or ORV's have significant impacts. They stir up dust which clouds the air, they create an incredible amount of noise, they pollute, and they are generally unpleasant to be around, both for wildlife and for hikers.
A plan is being put together to manage these vehicles in our forests and the opportunity to comment is being provided to the public. The plan would protect sensitive habitat, wildlife and watersheds by restricting ORV's to desgnated roads. It's our land, so we should have a say in how it is used. Deadline for comments is October 22nd, so be quick about it!
