So there's been quite a lot of talk on the news today about Al Gore.
There is a good chance that tomorrow he will be awarded a Nobel Prize for his work with global warming, and pundits are speculating that because of this his popularity will explode. Then with his new popularity boost he will then dwarf the other democratic candidates and walk right into the party nomination.
My question is how much weight do you give a candidate’s environmental policy? Are we environmentalists turning into sheep just like most NRA and pro-life/pro-choice voters and selecting a candidate based on just a handful of unifying causes?
To be honest I have mixed feelings about Gore as a politician, as an environmentalist I give him a +A though. Does that mean I vote for him?
Maybe...
I know that the environment is heavy on our minds, and probably foreign policy too, but is that enough to win our unwavering support? Gore+Green+No War=Vote?
What do ya’ll think? I know a lot of it is just simple politics, but if you could make a pie chart for your interests what would be the biggest piece, the smallest...?

Re: The Environmental President?
Sun, October 14, 2007 - 9:24 AMa 'pie chart of my interests' would deffinently show that having a healthy landbase is the most important thing to me... its the foundation that the rest of life needs to stand on.
however, ecology doesn't begin and end with politics... i feel they seldom overlap.
and the idea of anyone winning 'unwavering support' is scary to me. -

Re: The Environmental President?
Mon, October 15, 2007 - 12:38 PMRight now it oculd be said that the environment is the most important issue. If we don't make REAL changes fast it will be too late (I don't mean to sound like one of those people on the street corner with their "The end is near" sandwich boards, but it really is coming down to the wire).
However, we also need someone who is really strong on foreign policy to sort out this crap we are mired in with the Middle East, and we need someone with good domestic policy to clean up the mess W. has made of things here at home. Is Gore strong in these areas? I honestly don't know. Would I vote for Gore if he ran? Probably. But I think I might still prefer Kucinich if he had a chance. -

Re: The Environmental President?
Thu, October 18, 2007 - 7:32 PMSo yeah, now that I can finally get back on tribe :(
I'm thinking that maybe it would be nice to have another meet up instead of goin through buggy freaking tribe.
The end is neigh for a livable environment? Thats why I joined this tribe.
Hard hitting supporters of the big issues are great but I think that the president should be more of a big picture type of guy or girl :)
What good is defense when you can't breath the air? Which would I rather see, the ratification of the kyoto protocol or a big dent in 3rd world relief? I don't believe I could make that choice. I just think that its unfair for a politician to only focus on just one or two issues and carry a few good catch phrases for all the others. I can guarantee you that I couldn't get hired someplace with a half filled out application and an axe to grind with a good portion of the employees.
To be honest though I am really happy with all the people that are running currently, they for the most part seem really well balanced. Not my heroes but good. Its definitely a step in the right direction, but I think that the idea of the American president has gotten out of control compared to what the founders envisioned. One voice/one party should not be that powerful, especially when there is so much at stake.
