Hey Lovely, Fellow Burners,

Do you all know about Piss Clear, the Burner magazine, that was around for 13 years? It’s been called “the Vice Magazine of the playa” – sharp and funny with an alternative view of Black Rock City. I found out that RE/Search Publications has published BURNING MAN LIVE, which has the best of all 13 years (1994-2007), including “Best of Black Rock City,” “Sex and Drugs,” “Playa Fashion Do’s and Don’ts,” “You Know You’re a Burner When…” “Borg Wars,” interviews with Larry Harvey (Burning Man cofounder) and Harley DuBois (Director of Community Services), and introductions by Brian Doherty, Adrian Roberts, and Malderor. This book is 320 pages, and HUGE (8.5 by 11 inches) of pure Burning Man history– highly recommended – with really great articles and photos.

Yardsharing and Seed Angels - We need you!

We have a couple projects going that don't need funding - just participants!

The first is hyperlocavore.com. Hyperlocavore is a yardsharing community - built to support people in the practice of creating 'yardsharing' arrangements to grow food together.

Many people want to grow food but they lack one or two of these four things:
-time
-space
-skills
- physical strength

Forming a yardsharing group with your friends, neighbors, family or with your religious communities is easy - and free! You can set up a 'seeking yardshare' group for your area (like Chicago, South Side) or a private group for your own yardshare "Grandma's Backyard Garden"

CSAs are filling up fast. Community gardens have waiting lists. Food is getting more and more expensive.
Find some people and start growing together!

The other project we've started is The Great Let's Get Growing Seed Share.
We are asking experienced gardeners to become 'seed angels,' to adopt a newbie gardener and send them some garden seeds! I have sent four newbie gardeners enough seed that each of them will have huge beautiful edible gardens this summer. It's easy - it cost me less than 4 dollars to get four gardens going!

What the BM org did and is continuing to do to get green

I keep getting messages from people complaining that Burning Man didn't do very much towards the greening efforts of the org itself or to promote that to the greater community. As a convert to the Green Man effort (from a radical complainer about BM sustainability problems), I have to admit being impressed with what the org has been and continues to pull off behind the scenes. Check www.blackrocksolar.org as an example.

There is a google group called Burn Green just forming which is meeting monthly to try to better coordinate BM artists and activists with working to address sustainability issues way beyond the event - linking with local community businesses, nonprofits and local government. The first meeting, last week, was packed and an informative beginning. Consider joining if working on sustainability solutions is your passion:

Pre-Event Staff Operations/Education:

Staff field trip to Solar Living Institute
Our first ever field trip, we took 25 staff to learn about solar power, permaculture, composting, etc.

Brown bag lunch lecture series
A total of five conversations held at the office, on a variety of environmental topics. The goal was to raise overall awareness while giving staff a common language for understanding some of the issues we’d be dealing with. The last of them, a debate between Jim Mason and Dr. David Shearer over carbon offsets, was attended by 40+ people.

Recycle Your Life Day
Two week long in-office swaps of clothing, furniture etc. Kept items out of the landfill, and sent a lot of material to Goodwill.

Pre-Event Participant Education:

Green Working Group
Established open forum for any participant to suggest changes, initiate projects, meeting every other week at the office. Produced dozens of ideas, large and small, that were acted on/implemented.

Green House
Wonderful event in conjunction with Open House/Volunteer Day. Sparked a lot of energy—almost like people looked around and said “wow, I had no idea there were so many people like me!” Dozens of displays, educational tools, workshops, fashion show, music–you name it, we had it going on.

Environmental Section of Burningman.com
Built extensive Environmental Section of the web site, chock full of great information.

Enviroblog
Ranked as #3 overall most viewed page on Burning Man website. More than 70 posts covering a wide range of topics.

Green BRC Stickers
An inexpensive hack on the familiar black BRC ovals of years past, we gave out more that 5,000—amazing to see them proliferate.

Revised questionnaires
Theme Camp, Art, and DMV questionnaires revised to capture alt energy/environmental planning information.

Event-based education

Green Guide
We created a separate “Green Map and Guide,” an 11×17 two sided map and index of events, installations, and educational happenings.

Green Man Speaks
A week-long series of conversations inspired by the Green Man theme, held at Otter Oasis.

Large Scale Art Camp Networking
We worked with LSSACs to connect them to vendors for access to biodiesel generators, and to network their power grids–reducing cost, reducing pollution, building awareness, and fostering community.

Earth Rise Film Fest
A first-time participant organized a film festival at Entheon Village. Over 200 films were to be screened throughout the event, included DiCaprio’s “11th Hour.”

CIVIKS
Built and installed four three sided kiosks to display civic information throughout the city, with a focus on the theme. They were built outside the ranger outposts, and in the 4:30/7:30 plaza. Lit by solar power, they provided 24-hour info and maps, as well as event listings and MOOP maps (another first).

Event Operations

Energy Use Analysis
Working with Jeff Cole at California Environmental Associates, we conducted our first-ever analysis of energy produced to energy used, and found we often times had three or four times more capacity than needed, which allowed us to better scale our generation and attendant fuel use/pollution.

Environmental Assessment
Working with a team of volunteers, Dr. Elizabeth Dougherty (with California’s Flex Your Power office) is conducting a comprehensive baseline assessment of BM’s environmental efforts. They are analyzing purchasing, materials, processes, and transportation—pretty much every aspect of the event. Report due in January—will be unmatched look at how we’ve done, and where we can improve.

Cooling Man
For the first time, we calculated the entire carbon footprint of the event. To our knowledge, we are the only event in the world that has done this. Our total impact, adjusted upwards for increased participants, was 34,000 tons. Contributions and actions by participants offset 851 tons of that—almost quadruple what last year’s number.

Wood Recycling
BWB/DPW collected a total of 56 units of lumber, up from 42 last year. This increase is especially noteworthy considering that ½ the lumber from 2006 was from the Belgian Waffle.

Aluminum, Glass, Etc Recycling
OFFSITE: Albertson’s in Reno gifted seven drive through drop off recycling centers, and hang tags with maps to the locations, which were distributed via Recycle Camp and Playa Info. Some totals: Aluminum and tin – 600 lbs; Plastics — 48 watermelon bins full; Glass:14 bins; Cardboard — 35 pallets (much of which was taken from burners as they were shopping to go to BRC). The proceeds are being donated to the Gerlach school to cover maintenance on their solar array.

ONSITE: During the event, the commissary and the café both collected and sorted recycling. This was a big success—at times too much of one. The recycling at the café piled up and needed to be removed to the depot for staging, which didn’t happen as quickly or often as needed.

Composting
First ever attempt to segregate and process compost from the event. Resulted in four dumpsters of compost (two from commissary, one from café, one from participants).
Unique partnership with the City of San Francisco provided 65 theme camps with green composting bins, which generated an entire 30 yard dumpster of compost. The SF Dept. of the Environment has called this “some of the best educational outreach money we’ve ever spent.”

Biodiesel Shuttle Bus
Participant sponsored/operated shuttle ran from Reno Airport to playa, with a stop at Whole Foods. Worked well, most buses sold out, though not all seats were full.

Event Infrastructure

Lowered Power Use
By using all LED or compact fluorescent lighting, we were able to increase the size of the man base by a factor of ten, and still cut the power load by 50%.

Café
The crew here was green before green was cool, and still are. They composted and recycled (see elsewhere) and produced express lanes for those who brought their own cups.

Commissary
Composted and recycled (see elsewhere) and switched entirely to corn based utensils for to-go meals, without additional cost.

Gate/Plant Policy
On the fly, we devised a strategy that would keep plants out of the city…and out of the trash. Gate aggregated plants coming into the city, and every morning Joy would pick them up and bring them to the office in Gerlach, where they could be picked up of the porch by locals.

Biodiesel
We stipulated in our RFP that we wanted to run all biodiesel in our generators, and were thus able to convert 87% of our load to renewable energy—and change the way vendors approach biodiesel use. Approximately 11,000 gallons of locally produced fuel were expected to be used. Additionally, over 50 camps were able to go biodiesel because we opened the door.

Solar Array
Built and operated at 30kW solar array and educational center, to power the man base and Green Man Pavilions, running the man base on 100% renewable energy.

Yellow Bikes program
We had the largest per capita community bike program of any city in the world; some 700 bikes were in use. Next year with more time ( we only had a month’s notice) we’ll have all 1200 bikes built, and their baskets ( with instructions, and lights!) installed.

Green Man Pavilion
We had 30+ installations covering a variety of environmental issues/solutions, ranging from home DIY crafty kitsch to mind-blowing innovation. Truly some world-class installations, and an incredible opportunity for us to expand the very nature of what we mean when we say “participant.”

Post Event:
Black Rock Solar
In October, volunteers and staff built 120kW of solar power to be donated to the town of Gerlach, and 60kW to the town of Lovelock. Over the next 20 years, these projects will net $2.5+million in free energy for those communities. The ribbon cutting on the project was last week.

Off Season Art Car Needed

I'm a film and television actress down here in Los Angeles and the film I am currently working on is seeking an art car. Since I'm a Green Burner, too, I thought I'd come to you guys first.

Your car would ideally be located in the SoCal area, but the production company will consider Bay area as well. We're looking for a highway drivable auto - mini van or smaller in size. You will be compensated for your off-season art car enrollment or we could see if you fit in the film for a feature yourself, if you prefer!

Even more exciting, the film, Bold Native, is written about the Animal Liberation front as an unjustly classified terrorist society. Need practical advice - wind power at Burning Man...

Hi all,

We are making a big push towards renewable energy at our camp this year, going for a combined wind/solar solution. However, we've hit a snag with our wind generator tower - specifically, the plans call for a 2x2' concrete-filled hole in the ground. (A) We didn't include that in our camp application, and (B) we don't want to dig a 2x2 hole in the playa and fill it with concrete anyway! =]

We are wind-generator newbies, and are well aware we are playing with dangerous toys. So it's a problem!

So, can anyone connect me with people who have experience with wind generators at Burning Man, so I can benefit from their experience? Is there a good tribe for this kind of question? I have already pinged the AEZ mailing list, but we're running out of time and so I'm going wide...

BRC totally GREEN

Hi all,
A burner friend of mine told me to post here and see what you all have been doing and maybe colaborate with all you on completely Greening BRC. My name is Karmalicious (I'm not on tribe a lot with all these other lists but can be...please feel free to email or call me kimgregory311@hotmail.com or 303-358-6935). I was just in charge of Greening our Colorado burn Apogaea and it went off sooooo great. We may have been the 1st regional to go as green as possible. I can for shizzle give yall a report if you would like and was gonna put something together for someone at the LLC. So we composted and recycled the entire event and saved sooo much from being dumped and really every perosn was amazed at how little trash they were packing out.
So I have always seen Aluminum recycle camp and the earth guardians at BM and great MOOP pick up afterwards by DPW and I know there is suppose to be how to green your life info and help the burn I just don't think it is very visible....but my vision as I'm sure is many of yours is to have complete on site recyling (plastic 1-7, glass, metal (DPW has requested) along with aluminum camps efforts, glass, cardboard and paper) as well as burnables promoted and on site veggie composting.
This is a huge task (a regional was hard as it was) I would love for enough people to get excited and come together and pool resources and make it happen this year but if it can't happen now then next year. I think with the funding and voluneteers and leadership it could. I am willing to take lead on it with help form those of you who know stuff....and I know you know lots. I can be out there a week before event and stay a week after. Colorado currently doesn't have a big art project going (but they are hard to motivate I will tell you right now...but they did love the green efforts at APO and maybe this will spark more). FYI we would need 50-75 volunteers and propbably 2-3 storage containers or semis to haul out. All metal money could go to the company hauling and or to the surrounding towns....as well as composters could be dontaed to Gerlach and a workshop could be done with thier farmers in town pre or p[ost event. I have many more ideas and what worked at APo and what did not. I know this sparks a self reliance debate but what I will tell you is people are lazy, they are even lazier when it is hot and they are partying and we need to make it easy and we need to help eliminate the waste that will be produced for our event if we do not have recycling and composting.

solar cooler ?

Down here in Texas we just finished up our regional, Burning Flipside. It was hot as balls all week long, getting up over 100 degrees several days in a row, and humid all the time. Besides the creek or an air-conditioned RV (and we know how energy efficient those guys are), the only option is to sit and sweat. I'm curious if anyone has heard of a passive-solar fan or has any ideas for how one might be constructed ?

Serious Burn-Greening Suggestion: How do I get it to the organization?

As I waited to be admitted last year, I spent three hours seething at the hundreds if not thousands of vehicles around me, most of them running their fossil-fuel engines for no other reason than waiting to edge up another few feet. And this was in the middle of the night. At the "Green Man" burn!

There is a simple solution to this disturbing problem. Note that these vehicles are just trying to get to the gate, albeit in the most inefficient way possible. Why can't the gate come to them? Here's how it would work. The "pipeline" of vehicles stops, lined up at the gate. The admissions people GO DOWN THE LINE, admitting each frontmost vehicle in turn, which then motors off. Everybody else just sits there, engine off. After a couple hundred yards of vehicles have entered, the whole line wakes up and goes forward, frontmost to the original starting point. Everybody shuts their engines off again. Repeat.

Note that you can adjust the length of the "input segment" to trade off cycle time with the walk required of the "ticket takers". Note also that this doesn't add a burden to anybody; the ticket takers are walking around anyway. Can anyone see the problem? I think it just applies a bit of novel thinking to an onerous bit of convention (i.e., "We're meant to inch forward in traffic jams") from the real world, in a nicely BM way.

Now, how the HELL do I communicate this to the organization. I've scoured the Burning Man site, but I'm damned if I can find any contact information for passing this on. Also, whaddya think?

i just found your tribe, and i am very excited, yep!! we are organizing a burn event at Four Quarters Interfaith Sanctuary of Earth Religions, called WickerMan Burning.

i am very intersted in your group, and intend to spend this evening (except ffrom 8 -9 ::smiles:: ) reading through your tribe site. im sure three is a lot for me to learn here!.

The burn is "Wicker Man," to be held Thursday through Monday, Memorial Day weekend; and we have a setup weekend, the weekend before. We are trying to lay the groundwork that will grow into a full-on burn, with an amazing site, roads for art cars, a $4,000 art grant budget and plans for a stupendous effigy.

We will be using Four Quarters as our site, which has the rep as one of the most edgy and progressive non-profit camps on the east coast. They have given us their full support for Wicker Man. Four Quarters has a piped water system, hot showers, flush toilets and of course port-a-potties. Buried power lines for their bio-fueled camp generator, a covered stage and three swimming holes. Lots of camping under tall trees and out in the sun too. And 2 miles of gravelled roads. Four Quarters is located 100 miles west of DC and Baltimore, just off I-68.

We want to develop a burn that is art focused and will support big art. And one that has a vision of the future of burns that is sustainable, ecologically responsible and leaves behind a small foot print. Thus "Wicker Man;" the old celebration of the Green Man and Green energy. We already have over 20 theme camps and art projects registered, and we are just beginning our announcements. We plan to have three "Theme Towns." "Sound Town," where we can run sound all night long, like the Gaian MInd psytrance festival held at Four Quarters. "Sin City" down along the river, a cure for what ever ails you. And "Center Circle," a place for nature and spirit; held inside the amazing stone circle at Four Quarters. (Yes, there is a circle of standing stones and they are BIG!)

And then there is the Man. Planned at 35 feet high our man stands on a round Temple to the Spirit of Fire, a big enough room that you can enter and place your own art and offerings to the burn. The roof of the temple is a deck upon which stands the Man, and people can stand too.. His belly is the Upper Temple, with room for just one person at a time. Each of his arms will hold a flaming fire pot, and we hope, will move as he burns. This is a huge project and we are looking to get as many people involved in his construction as possible. Ground breaking for the Man is Friday, May 9th, and then the next two weekends until he burns.

As much as I love you all and this tribe, I don't think that I am the best manager, nor have the time to keep the juice flowing and threads going here.

Anyone else interested in picking this role up, or try it on for size. I am in awe of what's happening with the Greening BM movement, there is a new magical energy that has taken place with it now, as it (and we) have gone through ups and downs turn around loops in and out and all about to learn and grow, criticize and moan, have fun and play, create, destroy, and build those skills to new thrills and get the green on!! This has expanded to so many places, in the office, theme camps, at home, trying something new, support green buiz and products, and burners... the list goes on!! (see the other posts here that cover much of it)

Thanks for all you have each contributed and please take this to the next level. I did my job as an instigator, not finished just expanding as well... I am now instigating taking these principals into my home in Oakland, CA ((work party Dec 8th!! ping me if you want to play!!)) and will continue to learn from and share resources with you all... just need to focus on the home ground and happy to do general consulting for joyful healthy sustainable living.

For those interested in taking this tribe to the next place of existence, please let us know that you want to be the new greening the tribe manager. I'm so happy to see what has become of this and I echo Blue and Dr. E on how I'd like to learn about what you've gotten from this "Green year +" experience and the ripple effects you see happening.

greenfest interest

i'm interested in learning more about how greenfest is run. my interest is in sustainability within the planning of the event--how do the event staff handle waste management, food vending, transportation/parking policy, etc. (i'm an event planner and work on logistics and sustainability for a variety of events.)

two purposes of this thread:

a) i'd love to hear opinions from people in the know about how they feel about Greenfest's sustainability practices. i have no pre-judgment--i'm just interested in learning more about how a more mainstream/yuppie eco-event has shaped its environmental policies (compared to, say, burning man, OCF, WEF, or party camp-outs).

New World Record Bicycle Parade

4800 bicycles rode through the town of Fort Collins, Co, on Saturday Sept. 22.
It smashed Tiawan's previously recorded parade of 1910 riders. It was an awesome event, such a great statement.

I wonder if Paul Addis saw me as he climbed up the Man to set him on fire early Tuesday morning? I was in the Green Man Pavilion down below when it happened.

I didn't see him. I had just met Katrina Kachina, a major force behind the Green Man theme, minutes before. I was standing by the Open Source Green Lab installation, gazing upon the full moon eclipse with the Man behind my back. I had been scheduled to offer knowledge about natural building systems and resources to anyone who wanted to lend an ear earlier that afternoon, but the whole Pavilion was closed off because a nearby artist hadn't finished using a forklift and welding his metal tree together yet, and didn't open until after Satisfied with having stayed up until early Tuesday morning to witness the highlight of the night, I started heading back to camp for bed as I noticed an odd energy grow around the Pavillion.

As I began to walk across the open playa I watched an emergency vehicle weaving through Black Rock citizens and heading out straight towards me. They passed right by me on their way towards the general direction of the Man. I turned around to see where their destination was and my breathing paused.

I didn't see the Man burning. I may have glanced at something on fire when I turned around, but that didn't interest me. What immediately seized and held my attention was Orion crawling over the mountains along the eastern horizon. The first sighting of his annual rebirth is always a special moment to me, and I hadn't seen Orion since the springtime in Costa Rica where I had figuratively burned my own man. Feeling even more grateful for the celestial activities of that night, I continued onward to rest upon my dusty bed.

I didn't find out that the Man had burned until breakfast. Oh well. I'm sure that it would have been amazing to actually NOTICE the Burning Man when I was still standing within range of Him falling on me, but He had been eclipsed by the beauty of the bigger picture at that moment.

I heard Mr. Addis did it because Burning Man was letting the Corporations invade with the Green Man theme, because of what Burning Man had become/lost over the years, because it needed to be reclaimed/redefined in the true spirit of radical self-expression.

I was gifted a ticket to Burning Man in exchange for hosting discussions on natural building systems and resources for the Open Source Green Lab. I even got on the playa two days early to help set up the Green Man Pavilion. On Monday the whole Pavilion was closed because an artist was still building a tree. I had been looking forward to hosting my first session that day, as well as a couple that showed up just to be in it. It opened up to the public for the first time later that evening, only to be closed down again seven hours later. On Tuesday the rebuild crew had rearranged and condensed the Pavilion to make room for making the new Man. We thought we could resume the Green Lab the next day, but weren't able to until finally on Friday. We had to have the whole Pavilion cleared out later that night so that the Man could burn again the next night. Over two dozen open learning discussions on a plethora of 'Green' issues and technology could have transformed the paradigms of burners, only two actually happened on the only day it was open. How many people went to see the Pavilion and participated that day?

Aside from the setup crew, how many people actually got to see the entire Pavilion in it's original state before the eclipse? To be able to walk up to the pyre and caress the bark on those giant timbers while gazing directly up at the Man? To hear all these beautiful animal sounds, and to be told by someone nearby that they are all recordings of extinct species that a biologist had recorded during forty years of field work? To witness the power of algae to digest generator fumes into oxygen and biomass? The atmosphere was powerful and serene at the same time. Everything under the Pavilion was art. There wasn't any branding or logos or ads that could be seen there, not even for the non-profit that had organized the Open Source Green Lab. How much interaction with those art pieces and visionaries was lost because one man had an overwhelming desire to impose an early burn upon everyone else?

To me that whole experience was frustrating. I knew that the Green Man was just an art theme and not an ideal to meet while creating a temporary city of Americans, but it might have had a chance to become manifested into so much more than an illusion in the desert.

But as a virgin with a free ticket and no sessions to host anymore, how could I really complain? =)

Greener & Fashionable Dust masks

After hearing about the dust storms and such at BM I thought, well I better get my ass prepared!!

Then walking down the street in San Francisco, who do I run into, but one of my favorite people (one that has always inspired me by being ahead of the game) Isis.

She has made sweet, fashionable dust masks made out of bamboo fabric with filters in them to keep the dust out. What a god send this Isis is. I highly encourage you to check them out and get one, save your lungs and look great! I love this diva!!

maybe not related so much to THIS year's burn, but for burns of the future, there should be a lot more fuel options for getting there and powering your camp.

BM Green Model Camps/ Green Map

These camps featured practices, and green programming are part of the Green Guide and the Green Map offered at Greeters and publicized throughout BRC for renewable energy infrastructure, recycling, solar arrays, recharging stations, and educational venues.

We have camps of 6 up to a village of 500 peeps the Tour is self guided and participants can visit the camps with features that interest them. In addition, Angie of Cinncinatti Regional, earthguardian (at) scorchednuts.com, will be conducting a bus and bicycle tour of green venues Wednesday –Saturday, 5-6 pm and you are invited to schedule a stop at your camp with her.

For the tour we are starting off on Tuesday with a biodiesel engine conversion demonstration that
should be pretty hands on! Look for the mad libs for the travel time and there will be drinks on the road!!

An Open Invitation to Artists, Innovators, and Visionaries

In 2007, the pavilion that surrounds Man will be a 30,000 square foot exhibition space that combines art, funky exhibits, sciences and technological innovation addressing issues and solutions around: Water – Waste - Transportation – Energy & Food. As well as: Education - Green Building - Toxics & City Planning. Traditionally, this space under the man has been exclusively devoted to art, but the Green Man Pavilion will be different this year. Our goal is as simple as it is profound: create a visually and sensory rich space where breakthrough ideas and proven environmental technologies can be displayed and interacted with against the backdrop of the world's largest participant-created event. 1 side that defines the term/theme,

1side offers suggestions and solutions to mitigate the effects.

Here are the GREEN PAVILION EXHIBITS TO PARTICIPATE IN

1. *House of the Future –
Cross section of a house- 2 walls meeting where room is exposed. (dry wall, solar panel on the roof) Thermal wrap between studs, recycled denim, fiber glass. Use a insulator gun to determine which material insulates best. Use analog thermometer. Feature cutting edge green consumer technologies.

2. *Climate Change Display-
Open to ideas. One option- use standard kiosk as the basis for information sharing.

3. *Ecological Footprint-
Computer kiosk with software on how to figure out your ecological
footprint. Surround kiosk with signage on what an ecological footprint it, ways
to reduce it, and graphic representations. Could be built on standard kiosk.

4. *Carbon Footprint-
Giant (10’ X 5’ X 3’) footprint filled with carbon/mesquite charcoal.
With standard kiosk next to it with information on what a carbon footprint
is how and how to reduce it.

5. *Next Generation Lighting-
This could possibly be the display that was at GreenHouse Open House.
Show LED vs. Tungsten, focusing on the heat output. Could make bacon
on a Tungsten light bulb. (health dept issue?)

6. *X Number of Ways to Save the Planet-
Clever, engaging way to spread the word. Ideas welcome! Considering to spread throughout the Pavilion? BRC?

7. *Burning Man Earth Display-
Projected demo.

8. *Dead Battery Display-
Have the amount of dead batteries an average US household goes
through in a year in some form of display with the standard kiosk. Alongside, we
will have gadgets that traditionally used batteries but now use alternative
sources of energy.

9.*BM Alternative Energy Monitoring Display-
Will show what our solar array and wind turbines are doing. Could
also use standard kiosk for explanations.

10. *Lost Soundscapes-
ManBase ambient sounds from extinct natural environments.

11. *Cradle to Cradle Business Model-
Standard kiosk (with some artistic cradles) highlighting the kinds of
policies that companies are adopting under this model.

12. *Transportation-
Display biodiesel /veggie oil vehicle and biodiesel reactor. Show a
veggie oil conversion.

Composting on the Playa... want to help?

Do you know how compost works? Are you interested in helping 100
(!!!!) theme camps be able to compost their organic waste on the
playa? Then we're looking for YOU!

The City of San Francisco's Department of the Environment is
considering helping make composting happen on a large scale on the
playa, but we need a way to make it not get super funky during the
course of the week. Is this even possible?

If you know the answer, please let us know... the BRAF crew is the ones hooking this up.

FYI.. (a note from Blue)
We are not actually talking about trying to fully compost anything in
a week on the playa. What we really need are volunteers that want to
get in on a great new experiment in Black Rock City.

We are talking about green waste bins on the playa for 100 lucky
theme camps. The camps collect there organic waste and only the
organic waste, in the green bins, the ones with a lid and big wheels.
(In case you're living in the country somewhere and you don't have a
clue what I'm talking about, we use big bins in SF to collect
everything, the organics go to a commercial composting facility in
the far East Bay and the final product ends up in grape vineyards in
Northern California)

The green bins will get collected at a central location where the
contents will be run through a device that will shred everything into
small pieces. I believe they call it a masticator. This will be mixed
with material collected from the Staff Commissary and the Cafe. This
material will include a lot of biodegradable cups and plates for fiber.

The weeks worth of wonderful stuff will be transported to a place
where we will have experienced people and real composting will
happen. Yes it will stink more than likely...that's the smell of
Victory! My friends.

We are talking about a Community Collection Collaboration. We need
people to work with a representative greencycler at the theme camps
to show them ways to collect a weeks worth of organic waste and not
have a black gooey mess & control the stink. This is the type of help
we are looking for. We're looking for people that want to do
something during the event to make this experiment in composting
happen and work. Please if this sounds like you and you aren't
already spearheading something else, and you want to give back to the
community...talk to us. At the e mails listed in Tom's original post.

Thank you to those that sent in composting recipes and advice. We do
have the final composting part figured out so far, I believe, (The
place, the recipe, the tea to get it started.) though you might be
onto something with adding some dry material daily in the green bins
on the playa to help control the stink a bit. This is exactly the
stuff we need to work on with the theme camps. Please keep the ideas
coming.

Driving on Water to the Burn

We have installed two Drive on Water Units in
my camper van "Hula Lula"(she's a big swingin' girl!)
for the journey to Burning Man and beyond

This will be an excellent test
as gas prices and the US exchange rate is very similiar
to what they were last year
and, well, the path hasnt really changed, yet
has it?

I encourage all of you to try this on!
How many cars do you think are leaving BC for Nevada?
Thousands?
And what if they all could reduce their gas intake and emissions
by half!???

I'd say we we're calling ourselves into action
I'd say, we are making an impact
qualitative and quantitative
and so our voices, our intentions, our love
for the planet and each other

Glow sticks, glow toys...lesser of 2 evils?

Oh great minds of the Green Burn, I have a question.

We all know that nighttime safety dictates that most burners will choose to illuminate themselves in some way or form whilst wandering the playa after dark. We also know that many people make the choice to use glow sticks for this purpose; others choose battery operated blinky bling to illuminate themselves or their art/bike/etc.

My question is: which of these is really the lesser of the two evils:

- A glow stick, which contains nasty chemicals, cannot be recycled, is probably made in China/Taiwan and shipped using fossil fuels, and is used only once and then thrown away,

or

- A blinky glow toy, which may (or may not) last through multiple battery changes (frequently they're so cheaply made they crap out before the batteries die), is probably made in China/Taiwan and shipped using fossil fuels, ALSO requires the manufacture of batteries, and whose batteries, while recyclable, may or may not be recycled by the end user depending upon his or her level of motivation?

Keep in mind that this refers to a very specific application and I am asking which is the lesser of two evils, not for a third expensive light source solution or to hear "Don't wear anything, just let the moonlight guide you!!" Nighttime safety is of paramount concern here and I have a very specific use in mind when I ask this.

Call for participation: Project Swirl

If you pay an electricity bill, you're paying for lighting. Typically, incandescent lighting, the kind that's been around since Edison. It's not very efficient; most of the electricity becomes heat instead of light. For a long time, there wasn't much you could do about it. Which really sucks as you watch your bill get increasingly expensive. Even worse, the power plants spew tons of CO2 into the atmosphere for no good purpose.

But we now have a choice. We can replace the incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), a newer kind of bulb. They consume just 25% of the energy to produce the same amount of light. They last 10x longer. Plus they have a cool swirl shape! These used to be way more expensive than incandescent bulbs and produce inferior light, but no longer. The cost of a single CFL bulb is way less than the cost of 10 incandescents, not counting the energy savings. Pretty cool huh?

So I began to replace the incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs in January. It's all done now; it cost a whopping $60. And this is sweet: I've already shaved $66 off my electricity bills. So the new bulbs have paid for themselves already! And they continue to save me money. Less CO2 goes into the atmosphere, and less dead bulbs get sent to the landfills. It's a massive win/win/win for everyone.

So what, then, is Project Swirl? I want to strongly encourage you all to replace at least one 60W incandescent bulb in your house with an equivalent-brightness 14W CFL bulb. It may not seem very significant, but here's the thing: if each of us replaces just one bulb, then in a single year we reduce electrical demand significantly, prevent tons of CO2 from ever being emitted, and pocket thousands of dollars for ourselves rather than forking it over to the electric company. All this... and only costs maybe 2 bucks per bulb... a cost which pays for itself in less than a year!

The project goal is to replace 1000 bulbs before Monday, August 27th, 2007, the first day of the burn. If you replace any bulbs, contact me and tell me how many you've replaced. I will track everything here so we can know exactly what impact we're having, and report the final results on the playa. Swirlers will be honored by name on a sculpture I will create and display in the Red Light District. All the project details are here:

sorry for spammish-ness of this--y'all are a good resource...

false profit and downlow are looking for more buses to hire to transport attendees to our camp-out, the weekend of july 20-21-22. the event is being held in belden, which is on the feather river about 4 hours north (in a normal vehicle).

we're prioritizing emission reduction for our event, and thus are trying hard to find bio-fuel buses to take folks up to the camp-out. we've got two buses lined up already, but we want MORE buses for LESS emissions.

money from the riders on your bus would go directly to you. and we're willing to contract for minimum number of riders / minimum revenue guaranteed.

June 18th Green Working Group meeting

We had a good, productive meeting, lots of places to still get involved from 2 hours now, or a few hours a week, the on the playa helping with the green pavilion. If you want to participate and still don't know where or understand what you can contribute, let me know. Here is a link to some on-going projects as well, keep in mind these notes contain the priority areas and keep you updated in the latest haps!

WEBSITE: ENVIRONMENTAL SECTION GOING UP AND UP AND UP!!!

Environmental pages are going up on the Burning Man website, 3 years in the making!!… we passed around a Diagram for organization for the website… I'll try to explain here for those who didn't see it:

First 4 areas:

1. Greening your burn: camp, mutant vehicle, region, etc.

2. ways to get involved

3. track record of projects/ history

4. Community resource center- people own one of these areas:

The plan is to group these resources pages to the areas above, create consistency on ways to deal with trash, etc. Then there is a general greening your burn section- good for a writer with good burner narrative. This is modeled after the document we made for the artists in Feburary, and becomes a story line then that links to the resources on all the different environment pages we are creating for the process of getting ready for the burn, going to the event, and after the event. This involves the 6 R's. Looking at putting a "where to get stuff" section, when people are wanting to know where is a good place to buy or get stuff, hopefully they will look into the re-used resources, this area needs some people to contribute to.

There is an area for each page for explaining the topic/ what it is

Then a section for tips and hints

then FAQ's

then a section for Resource Links

We are working on green displays for Albertsons as well. They are going to donate the $ from all the recycling they get to one of our green BM projects. That's what I call working together!!

Bio-fuel flame throwers: There is a grey water flammable project in the works! As well as veggie oil and the lotus girls are working on something.... send us info on who's doing what that you know of so we can highlight it for the green maps and green pavilion.

*50% of the neon will be mercury free this year! for the lights Man!! Now let's work on the wires that get burned with all that plastic leaking out, they produce dioxin… we need some air quality testing folks to test smoke. Subways use wires that use no pvc

*Watch out for things that are painted when being burned, what's off-gassed is to be considered.

*Loki took playa samples 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles from the man to see what toxins have leached into the "soil"

The man is going to be up on a mountain of shade cloth, then a zen rock garden. Near that is the museum of different green projects.

The deadline for proposing your idea is July 1st, so please get them in. This is something you create, not just the BMORG, because it is largely volunteer driven. Please read the pavilion guidelines.

We also need some owners for the different projects that has been proposed, and/or installer support- some people have their own crews.

Volunteer at the pavilion during the event…. 3-5 people needed for this.

Composting.... on the playa

Many people have asked "why doesn't BM compost on the playa?"

I say it's up to you, here are some ways for you to compost yourself on the playa:

1. have a net and dry your food scraps out on it and burn it later or take back in buckets or other containers.
2. Bring 5 gallon buckets, saw dust, and good lids- compost your own poo on the playa! (have your own personal restroom) cover up each session with the sawdust and take home to your own garden, etc.

The 4th Annual BRC Gathering of the Tribes Council, 2007

Greetings from the bioregion of Elphinstone BC on the Sunshine Coast. This year at Green Man the BRC Gathering of the Tribes Council will return for its 4th year. It is looking like it will be at Ecotopia but not fully dialed in yet. I am sounding a call for collaborators who value the intentions of Gathering of the Tribes and want to keep the torch lit.

What I am especially hoping to find are representatives of what I'll call tribal "guilds" who have a good sense of networks associated with specific dimensions of neotribal culture ie. alternative energy, alternative economics, conscious Vj's, permaculture, arts and activism, film etc to commit to being there and helping generate worthy content and follow up to this years council.

In the past 3 councils there have been heaps of input and participation but the weak link is the ability to make use of it all afterwards. I would therefore like to make a more solid alliance in advance of representatives and work in tandem with the most activated communities and projects that might be ready to in essence, federate. My hope is by sounding this out now that those people can be as agents throughout the summer festival season keeping tuned and building the energies all season long.

Speaking of building energies, I am also very interested in the lead into the council itself. As a neotribal culture and as Burners, what would a council lead in procession look like to you? If there's a way you can see yourself calling in the council in some way with the kind of fanfare this deserves please let me know. I am looking for contacts for anyone in any cool marching bands, kodo drummers, hoopers, Mutant Vehicles with megaphones- anyone who can draw people and spread the word at the same time especially to those who don't read the Who What Where When guide.

Lot's of Construction Materials to Give Away

I live in Oakland. I'm cleaning out my shop. I have a lot of materials I've collected over the years that need to go....maybe to Burningman! I'll be keeping stuff that I'll need but really need to clean out my space.

If you live in the Bay Area, need building materials, here's what I have: lot's of assorted scrap pieces of wood (plyood(s), framing materials, lath, lattice, old growth fir from salvaged cabinets, etc.; plumbing things (cast iron, fixtures, single wall venting; sonotube; felt paper; Tyvek; assorted hardware).

It's not a windfall but I thought I'd see if there was anyone within our community I could offer it to first before posting on Craigslist.

This is a GREAT way to green your burn!

To help support Burning Man 2007: The Green Man, and make Black Rock City the first 'carbon-neutral' city in the world, Cooling Man needs more hearts and hands. Work on a project to indicate global warming- equivalent to one Christmas light per square meter across the planet 1 s mile of Christmas lights-in a ball that show heat. 1500 lights- (number I got) –check with Jeff Cole and see- Right now he needs help to-make a globe- it is a square meter heat project-

3.Resource Directories, wiki – ways to green the burn
Adding resources and insight on ways to Green the Burn. Which include but not limited to: Materials, energy, lighting, gray water, recycling, re-using/salvage, composting, waste, the 6 R's, burning’ and more...
moving this information to the wiki (tech savvy people needed here!) and then getting this to the outreach team and the website team for the environmental section.

4.Communications, distribute information/ OUTREACH
Get the word out and updates on what is happening with greening Burning Man. Let people know where they can get involved, and share educational tidbits, and our resource directories with Burners around the world. You can also update the info for our wiki that will then lead into the Environmental section on the website. Help with our super sweet looking e-mail coming out, get this out to theme camps, participants, and your friends.

5.Energy Infrastructure / Power Supply
Need a lot of people to help install a solar array in Gerlach in July.

6.We will also have a 3,500 watt solar system ran lighting behind coffee bar, and some on the man base, we will need some help installing this. Efficient Energy solar was the company that supplied this and a month and 1/2 after the event these panels were powering people’s homes in Southern California. If we can get more than one company doing this, we can have multiple stations and more homes being solar powered! Power light is the company that is powering the man base. This is a great time to learn and contribute– however we can all gain a great deal by working together like this.

7.Composting
This is composting opportunity is for the ranch from the commissary (there place that feeds the staff). No for individuals or camps. One step at a time. We’re all here to learn new things and make things happen. Andy Man is a Resource and is down to help wit composting- their company can’t do anything- however he will help with signs and more. Our board members are into it, one even is researching more including mushroom composting and more- all loosing at this being a stream of revenue and decrease coast of hauling food waste away as trash. Goal: this can be an addition income stream, or can be a giant labyrinth. The neighboring ranch sometimes uses human waste.

8.Workshops and Coordination
Host workshops and/or coordinate the workshops before the burn and on-playa. You can do this anywhere... if you are in San Francisco you can use the Burning Man headquarters. If you live somewhere else we can help connect you to your regional rep. The workshops coordination involves scheduling and getting people involved in places to learn more about greening principals and the 6 R’s (Respect, rethink, reduce, re-use, recycle, restore). Coordinating logistics and people with ideas to make the workshops happen.

9.Transportation & Clean Fuels
Organize clean fuels transportation on and off the playa, and share this information with our education and resources information. Help organize transportation for the Burn... to and from the Play to Reno, the Airport, etc.

11.Chlorophyll Collective – help ‘em out!
The Chlorophyll Collective is creating a "greenhouse gas capture and sequestration from a generator's exhaust by photosynthetic organisms." They will show how algae can be used to "green" exhaust emissions from combustion-based power generators on or off the playa. Bio-diesel fueled is best for many reasons… however any kind will work with this project.
They have come up with a list of materials and costs, some of the key items are blower, high-pressure water pump, etc. to be donated-
something that the BM network might be able to help us accomplish this??
This list needs to get into the hands of industrial scrap folk who can help us get these materials for free or cheap.

This summer, Burning Man will hold its twenty-second annual event in the vast and remote Black Rock Desert of Nevada. Forty thousand participants from around the world, including more than 100 journalists, will attend this celebration of creativity. The year's theme, "The Green Man", explores the human relationship to nature, in particular our collective response to global warming, and sets the stage for an unprecedented informational exchange.

Yep, that’s what the girl said. This weekend, begin to look for those unusual bits of debris - the odd playing card – a dropped office missive – broken glasses – the single wedge sandal found in the men’s bathroom of the club you frequent – that gold lipstick rolling back & forth on BART – or whatever other interesting thing(s) you find between now and Saturday, 14 April 2007, so that you can attach it to my art installation, ‘Trash or Treasure?’
Think of it as an anthropological exhibit. Think of it as a performance art piece, that you are co-creating. Think of it as your civic duty or think of it as a nonsensical treasure hunt. However you want to see it ~ please, SEE IT and BRING IT.

In celebration of this year’s theme, “the Green Man”, our annual Burning Man Open House and Volunteer Recruitment Day will feature a major Green House theme to help you green your burn!

As in prior years, this is your chance to meet the coordinators of our City and learn how you can become one of the 3,000+ volunteers that create it. This year, we’re adding a complete green fair, with eco-fashion show, alternative energy demonstrations and presentations, a trashion fashion workshop and DIY Sewing Bee, solar cooking, green art and RV's, exhibits, info on how to be a green burner, and a whole lot more! Even our annual pot luck and BBQ social will be earth-friendly. It all began at the beach, so after the event, we’ll all head to Ocean Beach to fire up the new burn platforms.

Plan to spend the entire day at BMHQ, because like on the playa, there will be a lot going on! Here’s just a sampling:

* How to be a green burner: eco-workshops, presentations, and demonstrations on the solar powered stage plus green vehicles, green hardware supplies, eco-carnival, solar ovens, biodiesel distillation, grey water works, green art and the Solar Death Ray 3000!

12-3PM

* Volunteer resource tables open – meet the volunteer coordinators from over 20 departments that organize our creative chaos into our city. Ask them anything, like how their department is going green. From Greeters to Artery to DPW to Rangers to Playa Info to DMV to the Geek Squad, we fuel our city on participation. WE need YOU to be part of WE to make the dream real! You’ll never be the same…

* Solar Stage - Biofuels presentations, Green Man Puppet Performance, Inconvenient Truth Talk, the Tri-clops Monstrosity Band, and more!

* Green pot luck – eat lunch earth-friendly: BYO reusable or composting cups, plates, and utensils, along with organic food to share.

* Ongoing green demonstrations indoors and out - Check out the Trashion fashion Bee, the Friends of Black Rock, green lighting and videos, displays on how to be green, the National LNT traveling trainers – even a hydrogen-fueled rocket! Bring old sheets, socks, pants, sweaters, shirts and swatches to create a MOOP bag or playa outfit at the Bee.

* Eco-fashion show – get your trashion on the stage, or be trashy paparazzi!!!

* Leave no trace at BMHQ and cruise to the 5PM burn platform inauguration @ Ocean Beach to light something up! We’ve been trusted with this beach so treat it like the playa. Since the Park Service is running this show and even bringing the wood, please leave alcohol/glass behind and enjoy the fire!

April 14th is a day of climate change events across the country, so don't be a spectator - become a participant! It's a great way to meet everyone, become more connected to the Burning Man community, and preserve the planet. Why not start by leaving your car at home: BMHQ is served by the NEW SF Muni T-THIRD streetcar service, Mariposa Street stop. (scheduled to open April 7th - see SF Muni).

Join the over 3,000 volunteers who make Burning Man happen. Here's what we're looking for:

Airport: Construction, decorating, painting, miscellaneous general labor. Construction and setup. Customs Agents to run the Airport gate and box office, Airplane Parking Lot Attendants, performance artists.

ARTery: Meet, greet and register artists, help with our daily art tours, assist with the placement of art using GPS.

Black Rock Rangers: Dirt Rangers: Qualifications: A great sense of humor; Patience, patience, and more patience; Generosity and sympathy; An easy-going attitude; Creative problem-solving abilities; Mediation skills; At least one year attendance at the Burning Man event. Echelon Rangers: Description/skillset needed: Folks with good organizational skills, patience, computer usage skills.

Box Office: If working in our super cool, air conditioned location by the front gate, and being the first person to say hello to participants as they arrive on the playa sounds like fun to you, join the box office team! Our shifts are short and sweet, our job important and fun, and we would love to have you join us!

Center Camp Café: Lighting: lighting designers, electricians. Décor: artists, creative-thinkers, sewers, glue-gunners, carpenters, metal-welders, painters, fabricators, and furniture-movers. Performance:: a few rockin' people to help pull together some great performances. Sound: stage building & wiring for sound, work sound board, manage stage.

Lamplighters: Lighting the major boulevards of BRC every night, without fail. We welcome virgin and seasoned burners alike. You don't have to camp in our village to Lamplight. One thing is certain though. We can't do it without YOU.

Greeters: First Contact between participants and the denizens of Black Rock City. Armed with wit, wisdom and infectious exuberance, the Greeters take advantage of this opportunity by becoming skilled information providers conducting helpful, on-the-fly workshops to carloads of people.

Department of Public Works (DPW): Clean Up MOOPers, Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, Riggers, Welders, Certified propane and liquid fuel transporters and handlers, 2-way Radio Operators/Dispatch Operators.

DMV: Bureaucrats are HOT! Join the DMV hotties and help license the vehicles that populate the playa with beautiful and interesting mobile art.

Earth Guardians: Communicate Leave No Trace (LNT) principles and practices to theme camps and artists and the larger Burning Man community, participate in Black Rock desert restoration and education activities.

Emergency Services Department (ESD): Fire Fighters, Medical Professionals, EMS Professionals, Mental Health Professionals, Dispatchers, Communications Technicians, Logistics Managers, Emergency Managers.

Exodus: Instead of spending time sitting in line trying to get off the playa, volunteer with Exodus and help make others trip out more pleasant. Come to our table and see how you can get involved with thisfun crew.

Gate Staff and Perimeter: directing traffic, tearing tickets, vehicle searches, perimeter patrols for fence crashers outside our city.

Playa Info: Oracles: Helping people by answering questions while relaxing in the shade. Directory: Theme and personal camp registration. Inputting data to update the new arrivals and locations of personal campsites. Helping people find their friends, family, lovers or theme.

Recycle Camp: Carpenters, experienced domes builders, collecting, crushing and bagging the cans and “Recycle Camp Evangelicals”.

Technology and Web Teams: Network engineers, system administrators, python programmers, Zope/Plone developers, HTML coders, CSS wizards, database jockeys, web scripters, graphic designers, information architects, project managers, writers, content editors, image jockeys, and and user experience gurus.

This is your opportunity to meet the behind-the-scenes superstars who make Burning Man happen, and to become one yourself! As you may know, Burning Man is a volunteer-driven event, with over 3,000 participants pitching in to make the event happen.

Meet the project managers and volunteer coordinators who bring it all together. Ask questions and sign up to learn more, or to jump right in! From building our city with the DPW on the Black Rock Desert playa, riding the "edge of chaos" with the Rangers, greeting new arrivals, supporting art at the Artery, to SF office and technical help, lamp lighting, fielding questions at Playa Info, or erasing any trace after the event, there are many opportunities to fully participate in the Burning Man project. California Structural Engineer Needed

Are there any California Licensed Structural Engineers on this tribe? The Shipyard in Berkeley has a design to rearrange the shipping containers & need assistance with structural calcs & foundation design. The soils report is done & the conditions are excellent.

Energy Infrastructure
AREA: Energy usage/ power supply

DESCRIPTION:
A lot of people have wanted to put energy into the man base- and there will be a call for volunteers for that later. Right now there is staff working on it .We will have a 3,500 watt solar system ran lighting behind coffee bar, and some on the man base. EE solar was the company that supplied this and a month and 1/2 after the event these panels were powering people’s homes. If we can get more than one company doing this, we can have multiple stations and more homes being solar powered! We can have the solar installed up higher to provide shade during the day- remember your battery and INVERTER. We want more solar to take generators away. Power light is the company that is powering the man base. This is a great time to learn and contribute (doesn’t give you a free ticket) – however we can all gain a great deal by working together like this.

Composting
Area: Energy/ Waste

DESCRIPTION:
This is for the ranch from the commissary (there place that feeds the staff). No for individuals or camps. One step at a time.
We’re all here to learn new things and make things happen. Andy Man is a Resource and is down to help wit composting- their company can’t do anything- however he will help with signs and more. Our board members are into it, one even is researching more including mushroom composting and more- all loosing at this being a stream of revenue and decrease coast of hauling food waste away as trash. Goal: this can be an addition income stream, or can be a giant labyrinth. The neighboring ranch sometimes uses human waste.

OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED:

• Committees need to be formed.
• Phone calls to people in Nevada to find out what we need to do to meet state and local qualifications,
• Research
• Layout, how big of a burm.
• Chaz, get info from Blue to help with phone calls and e-mails.
• Chazz will also be sharing the compost template of how to Do It Yourself for camps and individuals on the playa- so people can bring their own compost home or to another farm. There will also be a section on the Environmental; section on the BM website that will give resources for individual/ camps composting.

Lightning in a Bottle - Looking for Workshops

I work with The Do Lab, a burner run event group in LA. We are in the midst of preparation for Lightning in a Bottle, a 3 day green music festival in Santa Barbara, CA May 11-13. I am the workshop coordinator, and am looking to expand the roster of sustainability workshops. If you are interested in leading a workshop I would be interested in hearing your ideas. I have known the Do Lab kids for years, and have seen their commitment to becoming a green company really take hold over the last 2 years and I am blessed to have the opportunity to support our community's continued education in this area. You are going to apply for a 2007 Burning Man art grant and need
generator power. The following message is from Mathew Fassberg. If
you're interested, please reply to him, not to me - in other words, do
not hit "reply"! Respond to matthew@littlebeast.com . Work out your
costs with him, and, please put that amount into your grant budget
instead of your standard generator cost. Be green and reduce your
budget at the same time!

Snow Koan Camp is looking to provide art projects on the playa with
solar power; we're willing to lease complete solar systems to art
projects for a fraction of the cost of the purchase price. We will come
in and set it up for you on playa.. Last year we powered a few camps
and a few art projects, including Mark Lottor's Cubatron and Matteo's
Spectre, working out the kinks in our systems. For the most part, it
well very smoothly.

We realize the deadline is fast approaching for submitting grant
proposals.
If you'd like to include solar as part of your funding request from
Burning Man, answer the questions below as soon as you can.
Have only one person from each project contact me.
Please put the phrase Burning Man Solar Art and the name of your
project in the subject of the mail

Here's what information we need like about each project:

1. Provide a brief description of your project and/or a link to a site
that explains it.

2. How much power do you think you need? Is there a peak usage or is
it a constant amount when things are running?

3. How many hours of the day are you expecting to need power for?

4. What hours of the day will you need power? Day? Night? How long?

5. Have you yet optimized your power consumption plans through use of
CF bulbs, L.E.D. lighting and other energy efficient technologies?

6. If you were going to use generators or other traditional power
sources to power your project, how much funding would you be requesting
for your power needs?

7. Tell us anything else that might be helpful to know regarding your
power usage?

9. Provide contact info, both phone and e-mail.

If I can hear from everyone by end of day Friday Feb. 9th, We'll be in
touch with people over the weekend or on Monday at the latest.

Greening opportunities for Burning Man= places to participate

The Man burns in 185 days. O.K. We've got a lot of fantastic ideas, and now is the time to put some legs under them.

So, please come or call in to the Greening the Burn meeting at the Burning Man office at 6:30 to help us set up goals and timelines for our projects. Carmen will be facilitating the meeting since Tom is out of town.
The fabulous Kachina Katrina diligently pulled out from this past year's notes, the ideas people have identified as potential projects. We will be prioritizing these projects and putting committees together to get 'er done.

Before Monday's meeting, please take a look at this list and see if you would like to take a leadership role or work with a group of people on any of the projects listed. Also let me know if there are projects that should be added to the list.

Background on the Green House: The original concept was to provide a 3-D
room with sustainable products to educate burners about green products
they can use to prepare for the playa. In last week's meeting there was
concern that BM didn't want to brand or directly support companies or
specific products. However, we do already provide resource lists of
companies for burners and we do have companies that we'd like to
promote. So how do we educate burners to make green decisions with
regard to what they purchase as they are preparing for the playa?

Options discussed last week included:
- A call to participants to bring in their favorite green products
- Setting up stations with two choices (one green, one not so green) for
specific pre-playa purchasing decisions
- Showcase exhibits from the solar learning institute
- Emphasing less is more (leave it at home) Plan ahead and prepare

Plants on the playa this year?!

hello boys and girls,
my name is 13 and or erin, I've been working for DPW and Gate since 2004 and attending burning man since 1997.

In previous years Plants on the Playa have been a No no, for more then a few good reasons, I'll list a few-
The playa is a high Alkaline salt flat, nothing can grow there and nothing other then DPW lives there from more then two weeks ;}

When you bring a plant on the playa, there are all sorts of things that can kill em'- the heat and sun, the Lack of Water, the high Winds, The partying ( not so much the plants parting more the people around the plants )
And what happens what most plants die? especially in dry climates-
well Sir, the wither up, parts of them dry up and fall off.

This brings me to MOOP i.e. " Matter Out Of Place" anything on the playa thats not a little black rock or prehistoric fish poop aka playa dust.

which You as participants hopefully MOOP your own camp sites and beyond, but the reality of this is that A lot of MOOP escapes (wind, auto's, carelessness) and thats Why DPW stays out there until October~ MOOP chasing.

Plant MOOP though can be a big problem, Bark, Palm Fauns, Broken leaves, Pine needles, Moss, Grass, Flowers, and Nonnative Seeds, Etc

Now I'm sure you can all imagine the mess that could leave, and especially This year Because of the GreenMan Theme, there could possibly be 10 times the normal amount of people trying to bring plants in.

It all has to be removed from the playa before our job is done.

In past years I my self have had to take away many plants at the Gate and the sad thing is that They just sit at the gate and Die.
My self and a Few other's so far are discussing a Refugee Plant plan, in preparation for the possible influx of plants through the gate this year.

Do a favor for your Botanical buddies and don't bring them to the Burn, on a whole it really goes ageist The core Ideals of The Green Man and it can cause a Slue of problems other then the Death Camp the playa could be for them.

below is my original post to the DPW list- I'm still waiting to hear some trickle down form the decision makers in the BM org.

Ok I heard from reputable sources recently that because of this years Theme, that "we're"
letting plants through the Gate and on to the playa this year.
This kinda seems like a bad idea to me, I remember how big of a problem Fallen dead plant matter can be, "LUSH 04" any one?
I was told that this year when I'm searching Vehicles, that I am to let in all plants that Normally I would confiscate.

Even if We're not letting plants on the playa, the Breath Taking 2007 BurningMan Green man poster that's been sent out, is enough to inspire plenty of people to want to bring out the Garden. AND if that be the case, There should be an EZ to find mention of why not to bring your Plant to the playa, on the BM site AND Further More, I love plants ( fuck I'm never gonna hear the end of this ) and hate to see all the poor little guys die up at the Gate after We have to pry them away from patrons.
So maybe some deal with the Earth Guardians, to house the Refugee plants and find them homes post event- OR a daily trip to town, or Something?

Can any one tell me anything further on this? its been troubling me, I may not even be working Clean-up this year but I have sympathy for anyone who may have to deal with the debris from 15000 plus plants.

Also having God knows what kind of "Flora" out there could possibly have a negative effect on the Natural habitat, I'm thinking "Seeds" mostly, dropped or blown, could be picked up by birds and transferred to living soil and/or be toxic to the animal who picked it up.

With a theme like Green man, not having plants is hard to avoid, but for the most part it's Cruel to bring plants out there Anyway, most of the time they die. mean mean plant killers!

Perhaps this whole plant thing has changed, as I could find no mention of it on the BM website. Which in past years I could. Also, DA I know you designed the poster, and I think it's lovely, I also think IT and every thing thats written about this years theme could easily inspire thousands of people to want to make Live plant costumes and/or theme camps, art cars and art installations,oh god Pine-Needles? Spanish moss?

if anyone can shed any light on this for me, please do.

One more thing~
In light of this year's Theme, Is DPW making plans to be "greener" then in past years??

I'm going to be doing my part to work on Gate's recycling problems this year~

Plants on the Playa

This is a cross pollination from the Greeningman list serve, posted by Andy Baker (redwood) from earth Guardians:

I do hope we can have some plants on the playa, though
there need to be guidelines and major outreach/
education. Plants are hard to maintain and make a mess
in the best of circumstances, a BIG mess in the worst
(ie normal) playa conditions.

The big thing is that the playa is REALLY bad for all
live plants. It doesn't matter how much you water
them, the evaporation stress is too great for most
plants to cope. They will dry up and lose leaves
within a day or 2 unless they have a misting system/
higher humidity environment. Even then, they should be
entirely contained with a tarp beneath, stakes etc.

Having live plants on the playa is a big commitment,
they are not just decorative elements. You have to
care for them like you would care for sensitive
animals in a harsh environment. Anyone who wants to
have plants should have to have a plan for their care.
Maybe plant licences?

Dead plant material can be used, but only solid wood
that has no parts smaller than about 3/8 or 1/2 inch
diameter. All material must be entirely stripped of
leaves, and bark if possible.

The DPW says every year that bark, twigs, leaves, etc
are the biggest MOOP component! Just like live plants,
there should be a written plan required for the use of
wood or plant materials.

Oregon Conclave Meeting

Ok, all you feisty firey folks, this is it! The official “we’re having a conclave, now what do we do?” meeting. Everyone’s invited to co-create the magic we’ll spin on the playa this year...we need fire dancers, safety people, drummers, photographers, videographers, adoring fans...

Mark your calendars: Sunday, March 4th at noon at the Watershed, 5040 SE Milwaukie

Why would you come all the way to Portland that weekend? Glad you asked! There are no fewer than 3 other major events happening here that weekend that would make anybody travel to our fair, wet city…

Aphelion, a borg (work) party (March 3, 5p- wee hours of the morning)
March 4th’s anniversary shows (March 4, 3:30 all ages & 8:30 21+)
Community Fire and Drum Jam (March 4, 8/8:30- ???)
as well as the usual Dante’s Sinferno and, of course, the Conclave Meeting!

What more could you ask for?

How about a space dedicated to collaborative work that actually wants large bands of crazy fire performers hanging out & doing their thing?

Sound good? Then make your way to Aphelion (3/3/07) at the new Watershed building to meet up with Burning Man theme camps and conclaves, other projects, groups and businesses, and anyone else who shows up to “fly their banner.” This is also a party, complete with dj’s, dancing, merriment and madness. Oh yeah, and alcohol. And lots of cool people from Seattle and other parts of the West Coast. And fire. Oh, yeah!

This affects us as the Oregon Conclave because this space, and the 30’ wide dead end street it sits on, have been offered to us for Conclave meetings and rehearsals in exchange for participation from the community. Our part at Aphelion is to discuss fire at the new building, and begin planning on how we want to handle the fire department in relation to this building.

It's Aphelion from Burning Man, exactly 6 months till the burn.

Earthlight, Portland based group working on place making. EL is very large tension fabric structure, lotus shaped. Built on cranes and bamboo, 150 foot projection image of earth. Three petals: individual, community and technology. Various sound and light elements. Plan is to take it around the globe, use it to build community. Holds 5-10K people. Potential use as disaster relief operations center/gathering space. Will take two weeks to build. May include 50-100KW alt power energy generation station. Will supply energy to Bamboo Mandala, EL, and other projects. Budget $600K. Have applied for BM grant, will raise majority/all from elsewhere. They are a 501c3. Want to bring 200sf version of this to Green House event. 155K SF at full size, triple the center camp café.

Living Pulse, large scale dynamic participatory project. Circle of six trees which can be climbed and played as musical instruments, with one in the middle with cushions. All correlated to the chakra system. Place to focus healing therapies. Designed to be accessible to people who may/not have musical skills. Goal is to build network/community of artists working on this project. Open source development. Wants to find ways to involve communities that don’t normally contribute to/attend event, by having six community centers in SF bay help build banners reflecting traditions/themes of their communities, which will connect outer trees to the center one. On either side of center heart will be spools of red frabris, to be cut to tie trees together, forming a canopy, representing community relationships and connections. April 14th, in the warehouse and backyard, in conjuction with the volunteer event that same day. 11-3:30/4. Afterwords, go to Ocean Beach for install of BWB firepits. Lots of cool elements for that event, help needed. Biodiesel demo, water works science fair, black rock interpretive walk presentation from Earth Guardians, products on display. Debate over whether to have products for sale? Companies? We need to be responsible for giving out good info. Tabled for next meeting.

Regional summit:
Raw estimate is 4-6 trash bags diverted from garbage to compost bins, nice work blue! He’s going to work on doing the same for the Flambe Lounge. Had 60 regionals from all over the country and world, including japan, England, south Africa. This greening stuff is well timed, will help them do their events better.

Hey everyone - wanted to give everyone an update on planning for the
Green House! The Earth Guardians are leading the effort in planning for the
event. For those of you that do not know me - I am the project manager
for Earth Guardians (aka Lorax). During the day I work for EPA on air
quality and transportation planning issues in California and Nevada.

The topic for next Monday's meeting is the Green House, currently
scheduled for April 14th at the Burning Man Headquarters.

For those of you still pondering your involvement - I am organizing
activities and displays into the following categories (examples)

Questioning the greenness of burning installations

I have never been so i'll state that first but as with sand mandalas which in so many ways seem to be the ultimate in art installation i do understand thenned for non permanent stuff. . I am wondering why it is so important for everybody to burn their projects especially this year at Green Man. Why not design for disassembly and the donate the goods to some poor Paiute who could probably use the materials.
design for disassembly is becoming the hot bed in Green construction.
Why not here?

This is an early version of what we hope will become a comprehensive guide for artists, theme camps, and participants who want to green their burn. Questions, comments, additions, feedback? We’d love it.

BEFORE YOU GET TO THE PLAYA:

Planning some art? Building a theme camp? Work smarter, use renewable or reclaimed resources, and consider the full cycle of impact of your project. Remember: the simplest way to insure that you leave no trace is to plan ahead and prepare. The right materials, tools, and supplies can make all the difference.

The 6 R’s of Greening the Burn are; Respect - Rethink - Reduce - Reuse - Recycle and Restore.

Here are some quick tips to consider:

** Plan to use recycled and repurposed materials in planning your art and your camp.

** Use alternative energy sources and/or offset carbon emissions associated with transportation and energy use.
**Design your project for reuse, easy deconstruction and salvage, and recycling—use screws instead of nails!

** Coordinate with other artists to share transportation and energy generation.

What Not To Use:

In addition to painted wood, plywood, and particle/composite board, DO NOT use or burn pressure treated lumber. Typically, though not always, it has staple-like impregnation marks in it, and if it's new it may have a greenish tint. Not only is the smoke from certain types of pressure-treated lumber toxic, but also so is the ash.

Lighting:

Ahhhh, lighting. Nothing adds mood like lights. The little suckers also have a nasty appetite for power though —but they don’t need to!

When choosing strands of lights to make your camp or art project dazzle at night, choose LED’s. They’ll suck less juice from your generator and last year after year. And if one light goes out, the rest of the strand should continue working. Look for fun light ropes and other LED lighting products.

* Use compact fluorescent lamps instead of regular incandescent, which are available at most hardware stores—many are now for sale for only .50 cents! They reduce energy use by about 2/3s. And remember: lights should be removed before art projects and camp set-ups are burned since they may contain PVC wire or toxic heavy metals.

* Use rechargeable batteries, which are available at many hardware stores (such as Orchard Supply Hardware) and drugstores (such as Walgreen’s).

* Using LED blinky toys? Get the ones that have replaceable batteries so the whole toy doesn't have to be thrown away when the battery gives out. Be aware that some of these have exposed lead solder on the outside.

DURING THE EVENT:

* Minimize Playa Penetration - Do not dig holes in the playa. Small postholes (6 inches or less in diameter) used for structural support are the sole exception. Larger holes leave a visible scar and create a safety hazard. All holes must be refilled and packed down solid.

* Use a ground cloth when working in the open to catch debris and small bits of Matter Out Of Place (MOOP). A $20 tarp can save you hours of bending over picking up fragments and scraps of woodchips and sawdust.

* No Flying Art - Attach everything to your art installation well, so that nothing comes off in the wind and becomes MOOP. Do not include items, even ‘natural’ items that could break off, dry out, or fall apart and make a nasty mess to clean up. Dead or dried plants are especially a pain in the ass to clean up-please don’t use them.

* Protect Your Art From Attracting MOOP - Beautiful and interesting art, such as yours, attracts crowds. Large crowds may inadvertently leave MOOP behind. And, once MOOP begins, it breeds! Regularly grid and sweep your art-space to prevent MOOP from accumulating. Do what you can to discourage folks from leaving cigarette butts, bottles, and other trash behind. Avoid including any horizontal surfaces at arm level; they attract bottles and cans, especially on Saturday night. Don’t let accumulated MOOP distract people from interacting with and appreciating the art that you worked so hard to create.

* Don’t Burn on the Unprotected Playa - Burning directly on the alkaline playa BAKES the surface into a dark, hard, brick-like material. Don’t do it! If you want to burn your art, use a burn blanket or elevate your art on a large piece of corrugated sheet metal. Make sure the base is big enough to catch all falling burning wood.

* Don’t Burn Anything That Releases Toxic Fumes – If you are burning your art piece, do not include PVC (nasty dioxins are released), carpets, plastic, furniture or painted wood in the sections to be burned.

* Do not overload the burn platforms - With large pieces of art, have tools on hand to break your piece into smaller pieces before loading it onto the public burn platforms. Try to help clean up anything you burn on the public burn platforms.

AFTER THE EVENT:

Salvage - Take the extra effort after Burning Man to bring your extra wood and other camp building materials to re-use/salvage centers, rather than burning or taking to a dump. www.burnerswithoutborders.org/ - is planning to once again collect used, and usable, building materials at the end of the event—contact them for details. The burn platforms are for public burning of art projects, not left over wood you don't want anymore and especially not couches, carpet and PVC. After breaking camp, be sure to sweep the area with a magnet rake for any loose bits of metal. Donate unwanted costumes and supplies to friends and camp mates—it doesn’t need to just go in the trash!

of your decisions has on the environment and choosing the least

Alternative building resource ideas requested

Howdy Folks,

I am involved with the design of a large art project for BM 2007.
Green Theme or no green theme I am interested in using more eco
friendly building materials to achieve the end result. The core of the
project is an approximately 50ft tall 8x8ft tower. The tower needs to
support itself and several thousand pounds of weight. It will be
stabilized with cables.

Currently we are thinking of using lumber to do this. There are lumber
yards in the bay area that carry salvaged lumber, but that means a
trade-off of energy investment into long distance transport.

Does anyone know of a lumber salvager in the Reno area? (yep, we are
going to burn this project. Sorry!)

What about straw bale construction? I believe BM is not too happy with
straw bales on the playa.

Bamboo? Expensive and we don't have the knowledge base to work with it.

Pallets? Pretty scary at 50ft!

Rammed earth? (Un-used middle aged guy pants stuff with playa adobe
reinforced with hippy hair) Not going to smell very good when it burns!

Any ideas? Best submission wins the right to test the completed design
from atop of 50ft.

Here's the info on the Greening Burning Man process. We are meeting regularily - every 1st & 3rd monday of the Month at 6pm at the
BMHQ. If you are interested in going, excellent! please let us know and read below for some updates on where we are at! Recently we have
Defined green working committees:

1. Education/Outreach
2. Materials
3. Power
4 . Waste

Each Committee to address the following:

- Existing projects and planned projects [What is already going on and how to continue.]
- Goals [Mapping out the journey and setting a destination.]
- Benchmarks [The points along the way.]
- Tools [What do we have and what do we need to accomplish our goals.]
- Channels/Connections [Paths/relationships we have or need to forge.]

the first Education/Outreach breakout meeting will be
during the December 18th GWG meeting- tonight at 6pm. It is the largest group, nearly
all of us were signed onto this group, and it also overlaps with all the
other groups.

We will also discuss the Burning Man Department Self-Evaluation form
that was touched on in the December 4th meeting. We would like to get
this form out and available to Department Project Managers by the BM All
Staff meeting on January 27th.

The other item to start a discussion about is the Eco
Summit planned for this Spring.

For this December 18th meeting - we will spend about
1/2 to 3/4 hour on the Eco Summit in the spring
1/2 to 3/4 hour on the self eval form
and then spend an hour drilling down on Education/outreach.

Thinking ahead, we will have about 2 weeks in January to hold meetings
on Waste and Materials before the GWG meeting on the 15th. We can also
hold 2nd meetings on Education/outreach and Power if needed.

Hold onto your hat, for this is going to be a green ride!!

Bio-fuels on the playa

There was a question asked about bio-diesel drop-off's for camps out on the playa. The answer is yes, there is a delivery service. Yes ther are places that will rent out generators that can run on Bio-diesel- check the Burn Clean Project's website for all listings. Kohler rentals is a great source as well.

I know that Bently Bio-fuels, www.bentlybiofuels.com- (A *family* plant near Reno, NV- their bio-diesel is locally grown and harvested oils mixed along with a local Vegetable Oil Collection Service) they will be providing a stronger service to the BM community this year. They are having another meeting with burners and some staff in SF soon to come up with a good system. That's all I know about that now- however there's room for participation for integration of ideas.

There is also the BurnCleanProject.org- who arranged a Bio-diesel drop off to the playa last year for camps and individuals. I know this program will be stronger this year.

The answers are still formulating here- So stay tuned!! More info will be flowing. if you have any more info on this please pass it along :)

The Green Working Group(GWG's) meets every 1st & 3rd Monday at 6pm at the Burning Man Headquarters in SF. You can conference call in.

Green things on the Playa

I have an idea that's been building for a few years- a Scavenger Hunt.
and this year the theme could be find the green things on the playa.

for example, find a praying mantis. (I've seen them!) or there may just be a praying mantis art car or installation! Then there could be a clue at that station for the next piece. (need help comign up with the clues- got the concept here)

~*for the game to exist we jot down all the green things we know of on the playa- then write a clue to go with it, we can collect them here all write up the scavenger hunt before the next burn (or recompression event.) Last year I left a 'greening the burn" sticker on all of the "green" art and camps- like the solar sunflowers that lit up at night and moved towards the light (way cool!)

here's another one;
my friend Zsa Zsa is doing an art project where you shitck it to the man!! Where you artfully place your moop items found on the playa at various points (there are moop bags available or use your own re-used/ re-found bag- she's a bag lady, and gives 'em out )- and you can shitck it to him. There will be a clue there, here's her flushed out version....

“Schtick it to the Man”

Concept: A place for moop to be schtuck. An easy way for Burners to actively participate in Greening the Man.

Find moop, or any TRASH that you feel is still cute, or would look great as ART. Trash=Art if you ask me. So bring your art to the trash man, and…..SCHTICK IT TO THE MAN! In the end, we will see how easy trash can be reused, schtuck, and given a new life…. THERE WILL BE A CLUE THERE TO CAMP GREEN TRASH!!

*NOTE: This is simuliar the BRAF’s SCRAP eden garden that was composed of recycled art to make a garden in the middle of the playa. (another clue spot)

LOOK FOR: 12ft man base made out of recycled wood.
Hot Glue and Staple guns attached for schticking.
Small sound system ran by solar power, hooked up to ipod, playing I love trash, by oscar the grouch on repeat. (subject to change to sic breaks or dj)
LED Christmas lights (2 different Greens)
Lights Hooked up to fake rock that encases the battery with switches!! Switched control lights, on and off.

CAMP GREEN TRASH:
where you can play out your inner most trashy green neck tendencies. Together, we take the serious out of the Eco Movement, while continually instilling consciousness, and intention through mullets, acid wash, and trashy ways.
Main structure made out of trash. Old canopys, broken ez ups, all Taped together.
Green Trash Trailors? manifest- contact Tim Blair, he eco-retrofits trailers, and has a bunch of airstream trailers.

Green Building Guidelines for Burning Man

Green building guidelines have been developed over the years and could easily be adapted to burning man, if they'll accept them. This means that structures built, fuels used, waste managed, compost, shitters, etc., would have to meet minimum green standards if they're used at burning man.

Would that be authoritarian and weird?

Or would it be a serious way to set standardes that everyone would have to abide by if they want to attend burning man?

There are already numerous departments that regulate various aspects of the event. Why not have a burning man green building department? It could have a burning man aesthetic and be for the service of greening the burn.

Otherwise, "greening the burn" will be more of a theme for one year, when many of us want to see it be a premise for all future burns.

After Burning Man this year so many people have been excited about what's happening with the theme for 2007, the Green Man, sharing ideas, and wanting to know what Burning Man is doing to be more green and exemplify the theme- as well as where to go with their ideas. So many people have come to me directly (when they should be looking into what department at BM their project idea fits into and filling out a volunteer form off the BM website, rather than asking a passionate volunteer like myself.) I asked for a meeting at BMHQ with the people this all started with in my world- Blue and Camera Girl. They brought in Tom Price, Burners with out Boarders coordinator who had just gotten the go ahead from members of the BM board to help this group move forward faster - with out the red tape. The four of us have been coming up with a plan on how to organize ourselves and our collectives greening powers more efficiently.

Some thing we would like to invite you to is to help out with developing a template for each Burning Man Department to go through and evaluate how green they can be starting with where they are. This can also be helpful in your own life, business, events, and home. A greening template- building off all the ideas explored in the past year on the discussion list, and beyond that with the other amazing organizations, camps, and activities people have been involved in. Please send your template notes back to me and I'll compile them and go over them at the next meeting you are all invited to.

This is the time to bring it in and make what BM is doing for their greening efforts more accountable and tangible this year!! After a couple meetings we think it's time to get more community moving and working together.

Semi-Monthly meeting, ie: Green Working Group (GWG) every other Monday at 6pm in SF! come join!!
For directions please RSVP so we know how many people will be coming and be better prepared.

If needed we can arrange some conference calls out of this... just hollar if you are interested!! Also let's car pool and go the biking/ public transit rout (I live in Marin!)

We also want to know how many remote folks are interested
in attending so we can figure out if we need to use the conference
bridge or webcast stuff... so please let us know if you are going to be there for these Monday night meetings.

We will be exploring the greening department templates along with many other pieces at our next Greeners Working Group (GWG) next Monday Dec. 4th at 6pm (west coast time), and every other Monday after that.

Here are some major pieces that we will be moving forward with, and the leaders of those projects- (GWG is everyone who shows up and is committed)

1. Projects Template-
Identify the project, what research and resources are needed, what is already available, what BM dept. this falls in, volunteers on board, project coordinator contact info, etc. Blue is sending out a template for this via example project he is taking on: the LED lights at Porta-potties. (Blue leading)

2. The BM Departments self evaluation sheet. (GWG)

3. BM's website Environmental section launch (Camera Girl leading)

4. identify FAQ's for the website. (GWG)

5. Environmental showcase/ event in the Spring, Sunday April 8th -
following the town hall meeting. (kachina katrina, blue, camera girl, and $teven Raspa/ BM's special event team)

6. Community Lectures/ workshops @ BMHQ - for staff and community (Tom Price leading)

7. Identify goals:
meta goals for event, DPW, Ethos/ measurable, community workshops. (GWG)

8. Continuing on with the encouragement of meeting and discussions- using E-Playa more (is anyone interested in using that and being a voice from this discussion group?)

9. Clean Fuels Transpo (GWG with input/ resources from this list- including the trains discussion, kachina katrina, camera girl)

10. Sharing info/ resources for camping more efficiently and lighter on the Earth with the Theme Camps (Tom Price, kachina katrina, GWG)

11. Having fun in this whole process!! (Everybody!!)

Thank you all for your thoughts, discussions, ambitions, and goals. These are some of the first things this GWG will be meeting about to continue with the organization so the wheels aren't squeaky. There are a lot of projects that will be explored through out this year, Blue and Tom Price will be recording them and going over what departments project coordinators should check into (the ones who bring the idea up is usually the coordinator, unless you have someone readily available to do that work.) DIY community and let's do it together!!

Solar Powered Electric Art Car station

Here's an idea that will Green the burn and help others green theirs.
Lets make a Solar powered(wind would work too) recharging station for Electric Art Cars(only).
It would be nice if all the Art Cars were electric but this might inspire folks to make electric art cars(which could be used in the default world too).
Just my thoughts

cutlureseed is a really cool artist community/network/lifestyle for all!!! we have the great ideas of what is the intention, the land, the people and lots of other stuff but we need someone to help us establish our statis as a non-profit so we can REALLY get things going. like grant money, donations, LIGITAMICY!! we want to have educational exhibitions, workshops, lectures, guilds, interactive art of all sorts. ideally this help would come because you would also like to do art and perhaps at some part be on the board -to some degree-, could work helping us being paid with art studio/resources or even better pro bono! please check us out on tribe or at cultureseed.org. since the idea is based out of olypmia/seattle/portland someone in this area is ideal. thanks and we cant wait to talk to you!! be well, ellie
