"Caravan Studio is closing.
Yes, here is the big news, which saddens my heart to tell you. Caravan Studio must close its’ doors.
Times are changing and after many months of deliberation, Jeff and I have decided it is time to close the studio and move on to our next phase in life. Having this most beautiful studio has been such a gift to me, it has brought so much pleasure, with great people and events, all based around the interest of dancing together with our most beautiful dance, tribal belly dance. But it has become a financial hardship for us, so after August 16th, the doors will shut.
What more can I say, but thank you to all who have been involved in the studio in one way or another. It has been a delightful journey. I will continue to dance and teach, and I will let you know where my classes will be held soon. For those of you moving on, I wish you the best in your dance journey and your life. We are planning a big bellyjam for the final hurrah in August, with a blessing ritual, a book release celebration, and a night full of dance. I will give you the date as soon as it is confirmed. Even though I may not see you at the studio, I do hope you will stay in touch with me! Make sure if you haven’t already done so, to sign up for my monthly enewsletter—Caravan Trail— on our web site. That is a great way to learn about events and our growing global tribal dance community.
There is also talk of someone else taking over the studio to keep it a dance space, so I will be sure to keep you updated.
Meanwhile, I am still dancing and teaching and touring. Gypsy Caravan lives on!" -from da site.
I take heart in the troupe continuing, but what am I gonna do with myself?!?!
Seriously though, I moved to Portland in December, and the beautiful community at Caravan Studios opened its arms to me. My heart and my dance have blossomed with you, thank you all for everything. When I felt awkward and gangly and friendless and out of place, I came to dance and found my center and my strength, found my own beauty and the shine of it in the women around me. I love you!

Re: Say It Ain't So!
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 9:47 PMThis breaks my heart, I hate to see any thing that has touched so many people so deeply removed from their lives!
I really feel for all the dancers who are loosing a space to feel that beauty, so I want to let you know there ARE other studios and teaches around the area!
Euphoria Studios [1235 SE Divison &12th] hosts several amazing teachers such as Jane Archer and Cassiopeia, and although we don't currently have traditional ATS, Neo-Tribal and Caberet, Yoga, Drumming & Zilling, Poi, Classican Indian and many other kinds of movement arts are offered [and is right down the hall from a wonderful flamenco studio]. (euphoriastudios.net)
Magidah teaches as well [2211 NW Front Ave] though she is a caberet dancer, she is very skilled and has a beautiful style.(www.bellynet.net/home.html)
I know there are others around Portland, but these are the ones I'm familiar with. Please don't stop dancing! -

Re: Say It Ain't So!
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 10:24 PMI am certain that dancers in the area are aware of other studios, and it seems a bit...uncouth...to advertise other studios on the tail of this very sad news. I know you mean well, but the blood hasn't even cooled! And Paulette said she will still teach beginner levels out of other studios, so beginner students will still have a place to study with Paulette, last I heard! -

Re: Say It Ain't So!
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 9:59 AMHi, I didn't mean to be rude, I was just trying to offer some information. I've talked to a good number of dancers around the area, and I've noticed there isn't a ton of awareness of other teachers and studios. I don't mean to detract from Paulette's continued teaching, or the pain of the studio closing down, I attened events there too [couldn't take classes, because it was too far away] and I feel the loss of all the good energy from the city at large, but just wanted to help... -

Fri, July 25, 2008 - 10:28 AMI know ya didn't Tricia, honest I do! *hugs* It's just so soon, still, and everyone is trying to deal with their emotions around this, and planning a "moving on" strategy seems too much too soon to me... But I know everyone deals their own way, so didn't mean to ump on you!

Re: Say It Ain't So!
Sat, July 26, 2008 - 11:12 PMI'm so sad to hear this and wish the best for Paulette, Gypsy Caravan and all their students. The Caravan Studio was always a home away from home when I was in PDX, especially during Tribal Fest. In fact, the Hollywood District & SE Hawthorne are the only places I know my way around! The studio & the home of GC will be sorely missed! **hugs to you all**

Re: Say It Ain't So!
Sun, July 27, 2008 - 10:59 AMIt was reported this week in Paulette's mailing that the studio will be taken over by someone else, redecorated and renamed, and Paulette will teach 4 classes there--two mixed levels (Beg 1/2 and Int 1/2) and two beginner levels. -

Thank you for all your kind words and support in a time of transition and uncertainty. Sometimes the hardest thing to learn is patience when you have a void. But from there comes magic and creation.
I"m so glad you all loved Caravan Studio, it has been a great home for many, and I am so honored to have had the privilege of getting to know you all! (or at least seeing your faces and swaying hips!)
Now I can focus on what I really love to do, teach dance! so do join me!

Thu, July 31, 2008 - 10:09 AMI'm really really sad, but I'm behind you and Jeff all the way. Ummmn, don't think for a moment that I'm not gonna whine about it though ;-) (insert cyber hug here) See you at Breitenbush????? -

Re: Say It Ain't So!
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 5:08 AMGosh! Such sad news. I am in Australia with a tear in my eye. Thankfully, Paulette will still continue to teach - and to teach in Australia??? I heard a whisper that that may be happening.
I am reading it like this - the studio will no longer be Paulette and Jeff's Caravan Studio, but Paulette will still be teaching and travelling to teach and Jeff will continue to make music with Gypsy Caravan musicians? Am I correct in thinking this?
Even though I have not been to the studio, a friend of mine (who lives in Australia) visited the studio last year. Since then we have shared a dream of having our own space, however economics just rules that out, but we live in hope!
All the very best to Paulette and Jeff. Hope to see you in Australia next year!
Cheers, Susan
