"Caravan Studio is closing.
Yes, here is the big news, which saddens my heart to tell you. Caravan Studio must close its’ doors.
Times are changing and after many months of deliberation, Jeff and I have decided it is time to close the studio and move on to our next phase in life. Having this most beautiful studio has been such a gift to me, it has brought so much pleasure, with great people and events, all based around the interest of dancing together with our most beautiful dance, tribal belly dance. But it has become a financial hardship for us, so after August 16th, the doors will shut.
What more can I say, but thank you to all who have been involved in the studio in one way or another. It has been a delightful journey. I will continue to dance and teach, and I will let you know where my classes will be held soon. For those of you moving on, I wish you the best in your dance journey and your life. We are planning a big bellyjam for the final hurrah in August, with a blessing ritual, a book release celebration, and a night full of dance. I will give you the date as soon as it is confirmed. Even though I may not see you at the studio, I do hope you will stay in touch with me! Make sure if you haven’t already done so, to sign up for my monthly enewsletter—Caravan Trail— on our web site. That is a great way to learn about events and our growing global tribal dance community.
There is also talk of someone else taking over the studio to keep it a dance space, so I will be sure to keep you updated.
Meanwhile, I am still dancing and teaching and touring. Gypsy Caravan lives on!" -from da site.

I take heart in the troupe continuing, but what am I gonna do with myself?!?!

Seriously though, I moved to Portland in December, and the beautiful community at Caravan Studios opened its arms to me. My heart and my dance have blossomed with you, thank you all for everything. When I felt awkward and gangly and friendless and out of place, I came to dance and found my center and my strength, found my own beauty and the shine of it in the women around me. I love you!

I am so excited!
What one of our fabulous dancers and an author herself says about the book:

Tribal Vision is an inspired, insightful, and important account of the origins of Tribal Belly Dance and the author's personal journey through this brilliant and artistic community. Part of this dance movement from the beginning, Paulette Rees-Denis shares her vision of its past, present, and future. This is a deeply satisfying book for experienced dancers as well as new ones-- and for all readers who simply want to know more about a dance form that revolutionized the meaning of belly dance.

Hi Gypsy Caravan gals!

I'm clearing out some stuff that's been boxed through two house moves, and have come across an unlabelled CD. On it are a load of photos of tribal dancers - I believe the Urban Berbers - plus some non-tribal ones too. They could have come into my possession during an event I hosted with USA teachers, or through my visits over to the USA.

From what I can gather, they were either taken by somebody who has travelled to the USA/Europe from the UK to visit an old school friend, or a USA/mainland Europe person travelling to England - it's a little confusing! There is a photo of a message that says:
"Dear Miss Deltzerwas. Here to visit her former Kindergarten Student from England"

The date stamp is April 2006. I've posted a couple of the photos on my BellyNut tribe photo album: tribes.tribe.net/bellynuttribal

If you know anybody who travelled to the USA and may have taken these (one of the events seems to be called something like Casbah Studio) then please pass this on to them and ask them to get in touch. There must be some amazing memories on here and I'd hate it if they were mine and were lost!

Thanks,
In the meantime, I've just gotten back from doing Collective Soul 2 in Ararat.
Paulette seriously kicked my ass. Everything I thought I knew, I soon realised that I didn't know at all! She corrected my bad habits, she fixed my posture, she cracked the whip and it was exactly what I needed!
I haven't enjoyed myself so much in ages!
I hope to have her here in South Australia next year so I can spread the GC love!

I'm a new transplant to Oregon and the vast majority of my Oregon and Portland experiences were related to Tribal Quest. Guess that's why I'm looking to you all as the experts ;). Well, I'm out in Hood River and I'm searching for certain services:

fabric stores (places to get $2/yd muslim, trims & buttons, lace and gorgeous/expensive fabric to drool over)
co-op grocery store...organic, local, bulk goods
the correct name of the BIG asian market (Fubar?? something like that?)
anything in Portland or the Gorge would be helpful. thank you in advance for your help!

The Easel Position in Vol 1 just has me stumped and wondering if anyone could break it down (even stick drawings would be appreciated lol)
I take it the feet are in a turn out position correct , with a bend in the knees, open according to the explaination( a V similar to ballat?)
No matter what or how I position I cant seem to get it where I feel balanced and weight seems to far forward. I have also got problems with having knees bent at that angle, they refuse to open as demonstrated. I often have problems with anything turned out due to my knees just being uncooperative so I'm wondering if that might be the problem. I'm one of those people who can't sit cross legged but can turn my legs opposite out to the side and I can do a perfect T with knees together and feet out, flat to the floor lol
I have no problem with the bigger Easel used in the Structural roll with the foot farther back.
Anyone have suggestions on this one for me please? Help..

We also went with a super amazing crew, and made some music for the
people. We told them what we wanted to do and they were very exited.
so there is welcome from the owners of the land and the recently
emerging miny comunity that is about 5 km from the place, it is very
remote. no people in the area, good privacy.
there is a medium size town about 90 min away, and a full on city
(las choapas) about 150 min away.
So there is a lot of abundance of water and land.
land here is stil pretty cheap.
though i havent closed a price with the owner, he is open to
negotiate and even more if we do what i hope we can make out of it.
We are planing to start the seed camp dragon portal 30 november, and
plant watermelons, tomatoes, cabbage and all kinds of veggies, that
will hopefully give fruit toward the end of the gathierng. We foudn
a horse cart to bring the food in, there are also some canoes. and
we have pots and stuff for the seed camp. though it would be nice to
get in some cool seeds, and people to work in the SEED CAMP
(literally)
We also want to work on the kitchens and some cob building, and
whaetver we need to organize for x amount of people.
the actual gathering will start (Portal resonating dragon) 29 of
january, let me know what you think we havent sealed the dates yet
though we are about to!
hope you are happy, we will compose an oficial invite these days,
but youc an pass it on.
just dont mass mail it please untill we have all the info down.

Camping is on the shores of a deep river, where swimming is fantastic.
Nearby is the Chichonal Active Volcano, that in it's crater holds a lake
with emerging volcanic hot water, an unforgettable experience. (swimming
is possible with a bit of common sense and taking certain precautions)
March for global Cooling

This reforestation will be the launch of
a new campaign to help revert global warming.

Remember that the earth does not belong to Mankind
But Mankind to the earth.

We march with the earth
and for the earth

and her voice is our voice!

www.march.nomadsuni ted.com <http://march. nomadsunited. com/>

Why reforest

Reforestations are essential activities to help revitalize the health of
the Earth and combat climate change. Today around the world the
deforestation has grown to an alarming rate exceeding by far the index
of reforestations, this brings catastrophic consequences to the
atmosphere as well as for other organisms that's depend on these forests
for habitat..

We have but a short time to avert damaging and economically debilitating
climate change. We also have all the economic, intellectual and
technological know-how to head off this calamity and avoid the
disruption and misery that inaction would entail.
The solutions are numerous and, as many economists say, affordable when
compared with the costs of complacency.

Globally, forest cover is at least one-third less than what it once was.
It is time to reverse the trends, it is time to act.

Climate change confronts us now. There is no longer conjecture or debate
around an abstract or hypothetical future. We need action. We need to
plant trees and in doing so send a signal to the corridors of political
power across the globe that the watching and waiting is over â€"
that countering climate change can take root via one billion small but
significant acts in our gardens, parks, countryside and rural areas.
Achim Steiner, Executive Director
United Nations Environment Programme

” The question is not whether climate change is happening but
whether, in the face of this emergency, we ourselves can change fast
enough”
Kofi annan
<http://www.unep. org/billiontreec ampaign/>

Our reforestation programs.

Our innovative reforestations combine the plantation of trees fused with
a multicultural events, workshops and temporary ecologically friendly
living spaces that last from a few days to several weeks. This promotes
reforestation events not only as necessary duty of each individual to
combat climate change, but coordinating a culturally appealing and
spiritually earthbinding.

Through the reforestations and creative activities and workshops we
intend to generate a deep and lasting effect, as much for the local
communities as well as for the participants and simultaneously create a
forest or of fruit orchard that can also help as nutritious source of
food of the communities, as well as to absorb carbon dioxide emissions
which are exceeding on our planet.

Another key point is the life and direct experience of participating in
an temporal ecological community with all the benefits and complications
that this carries, thus also promoting ecovillage living and a more
sustainable lifestyle. Workshops are offered on a volunteer basis, We
ask from those attending consideration in order to maintain a
harmonically working community as well promoting principals of respect
towards the environment.

Participants upon arrival are advised to sign in agreement to a letter
of terms conditions that are provided upon entry, in this way the basic
concepts of communitarian life are established and the people are

Temporary ecovillage habitat.

Participants have the opportunity to offer workshops with a cultural or
ecological focus, like for example: Acoustic Music, permaculture, cob
brick building, African Dance, collective Intelligence, consensus and
facilitation, handcrafts from recycled materials, Horse maintenance and
care, temascal (sweat lodge), Maya calendar, African percussion, yoga,
martial arts and capoeira

In order to be able to live in this communal space that hosts a
considerable amount of people, it is necessary to distribute the work
equitably. For that reason we created the energetic administration that
equilibrates workload. Which is vital in successfully maintain an
organic community in a natural context.

In the morning, after the breakfast we form a circle of discussion where
people take responsibility for choirs and activities. The tasks are
distributed according to the amount of people that attend, divided by
the amount of necessary activities.
Usually during or after every reforestation we take the time to organize
a show for the village, that combines ethnic music, dances and many
acts. We also use the space and time to respectfully transmit ecological
messages.

This innovative initiative seeks to venture into new way of creating
events without a negative impact to environment, as well also to raise
awareness in the participants and the local communities, on the
importance of reforestations and sustainable development in a creative,

Northern Migration's Gala show will take place on July 14th, 2007......Tickets are on sale now!!!

Doors open at 6:30 pm
Tickets are $20 and available at Heartbeat of the East studio in Buffalo and on the web at www.northernmigration.net.

UNMATA, Zafira, Kassar, Sashi, Tribal Feat, Frederique and Gypsy Caravan all in one night in Ani Difranco's Church? These are the HOTTEST tickets in the world!!!
------------------------------------

Heartbeat of the East World Dance Studio is pleased to announce that this year's Northern Migration Tribal/Alt Dance Festival will be held at Asbury Hall at The Church! The Church, located in the heart of downtown Buffalo, New York, was saved from the wrecking ball by the Righteous Babe herself, Ms. Ani DiFranco. We are very pleased to say that the Righteous Babe Foundation will be the corporate sponsor of Northern Migration 2007.

Beautiful cannot begin to describe the space at Asbury Hall at The Church. From its soaring steeple, to its Medina sandstone Gothic Revival facade, to its Booth & Reister stained glass windows, The Church will be an inspiring backdrop to learn from the leading instructors of Tribal belly dance. The venue is perfect for our festival. There are beautiful hardwood floors for dancers' tender feet and there is a state of the art geothermal heating and cooling system. It is an environmentally-friendly approach for providing climate control. Finally, there is a plethora of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and shops nearby to enhance your Buffalo experience.

This year, the festival will have an area known as Valizan's Casbah! The Casbah, located in the castle like underbelly of The Church, will offer a space where you can relax between classes, take notes, practice newly learned combos and grab a snack and a refreshing beverage. The Casbah will be open to all festival attendees but will be closed during the drumming classes which will be located in an adjoining room.

Each attendee will be given a welcome packet upon signing in that will give you tourist information for the Greater Buffalo Niagara region, a map to lead you to nearby restaurants, shops and clubs and a little goody to boot! We envision a great festival for all of you as we strive to make you feel welcome and appreciated and as we bid you farewell, we hope that you leave with a giant smile and a little place in your heart for the festival we call- Northern Migration!

Hello! I am looking for people in Eugene, Oregon (or willing to come to Eugene) who are interested in being Points of Contact for dancers who are out of the area. I have to get rid of all the back issues of Habibi. There are are thousands of magazines and over ten years of Habibi Magazine are represented in these boxes. This includes the issues published by Shareen el Safy and Jennifer James-Long, from the early '90's until 2006. They new owner in New York City cannot ship and store them and so they are still in Eugene, OR and I have been instructed to recycle them. I cannot bring myself to simply put them in a recycle bin when I've known this magazine since I was a little kid, then owned and published it myself.

I do not want anyone to make money off of the magazines. I feel that this is one of the most important aspects of the give-away process. Since leftovers are going to end up in a recycle bin, they should be distributed to as many people within the dance community as possible.

THERE ARE RULES TO THE GIVEAWAY. SO PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE POSTING.

DATE: June 2nd and 3rd (Saturday & Sunday)
TIME: 9am-5pm Saturday, 9am - 3pm Sunday
PLACE: 620 Horn Lane, Eugene, OR
Google Link: maps.google.com/maps m=1
NOTE: Do not come before that date!

I am posting this on Bhuz, but I would also like to see someone post this message in its entirety on the MED list, Tribe, and any other relevant place to get the word out.

I understand that being in Oregon means that I am far away from most of the bellydance community. The other complication is that I don't have the time to organize and ship magazines to everyone who wants them. So I have devised a way to distribute them in the fairest way I can think of.

FOR LOCAL PEOPLE WHO CAN COME TO EUGENE:

- I will allow people, who come in-person, to take ONE ISSUE OF EACH MAGAZINE for themselves. I will put your name on a tablet when you arrive.

- If you want to bring an email from a friend, and not be a major Point of Contact, that is okay.

- If you are going to be able to come to Eugene and would like to be a "Point of Contact" for other people far away, you need to post your intention on this thread on Bhuz so people far away can contact you. Please include your 1. name and 2. email and 3. the day & time you will come to the giveaway so people far away can decide who to contact. Obviously there will be more magazines to chose from on Saturday than on Sunday.

If you are a Point of Contact, come to me on that weekend with:
1. The email(s) from out of town folks, and make sure the 4 points are included in each letter (see below)
2. Enough space in your car to accommodate the magazines
3. Boxes to hold the magazines for each person. A complete set would fill a 15" x 11" base box that is 10-12 inches high. The large format magazines that Shareen printed is the reason the box base has to be so big.

FOR PEOPLE TOO FAR AWAY OR TOO BUSY TO COME IN PERSON:

- If you cannot come in person, you can send an email to a Point of Contact -- someone who is going to be there. They will bring an email on behalf of you. This note will entitle you to one copy of each available issue of the magazine. You will have to coordinate the box and shipping with the person picking up your magazines.

- I will keep a printed copy of your email. This will help make sure that no-one uses more than one contact person to get more magazines than allowed. Like I said, my purpose is to get the magazines into as many hands as possible.

- If you are sending an email to a local Point of Contact, please include:
1. Your legal name
2. Your dance name
3. Your mailing address
4. Your phone number (in case we have question while collecting your magazines)
5. The magazine issues you want (who was on the cover, or the number of the issue is fine).
6. Note: please expect to pay your Point of Contact for both the box and the shipping

There is one issue of the magazine that I will not be stingy with. I have over 1,000 copies of it! So I may throw an extra issue or two into your mix so you can give it to friends if you want to.

Any left over copies of the magazine will be recycled. So please PASS THE WORD and hopefully we won't have to do that.

As I conclude this message, I only feel that I need to emphasize that this kind of giveaway will never happen again with Habibi, and these issues will never be printed again. So please take special care of the ones you get. There are generations of dancers in the future who will benefit from their contents. They truly are collectors items at this point and it's sad to see the end of them. You will be able to look back and remember the debates, the issues, and what a uproar it caused when Kathy Smith was put on the cover.

I look forward to the opportunity to touch base with those of you who do come. You can come bid farewell to this magazine that many of us have known for 33 years.

If you want to stick around and have a potluck, we might be able to arrange this if there is enough interest and schedules aren't too crazy. Let's discuss it.

Please drop me a message if you have questions.
