Anyone planning on going to the Evening of Gothic Bellydance performance in DC this Sunday??

There are workshops being taught during the day as part of the Durga Tour, then there is a show in the evening from 6:30 till 9ish with both local and out-of-town bellydancers performing.

I cannot afford the workshops but would love to go to the show. I recently moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, I'm new here, new to the East Coast actually and I'm nervous about driving to DC by myself. I may get lost or end up walking to my truck alone at 9pm in an unfamiliar town... not a wise idea. Soooo, if there are any dancers from maybe the Annapolis or Severna Park area that plan on going, perhaps I could meet you somewhere around your area and we can carpool the rest of the way to the show.

Feel free to reply on here and/or send me a private message!

Address of the event is
5207 Wisconsin Ave NW
Washington DC 20015

Thank Asharah for your offer to help out, I just replied to the private message you sent me.

and Thank you Maduro for the details!

I hope to make it on Sunday. If any of you notice me, please come say hi! I'm anxious to meet local bellydancers and those who appreciate them, but I'm generally too timid to approach anyone & say "Hi".

    Hi Valkyrie,

I moved here last year, so I know the feeling. I'll be stage managing the show, so should you notice a short, frantic chick hearding cats, um, I mean dancers, please tag me and say hello. :)

One thing I can say without hesitation is that you won't find a nicer, more welcoming group of dancers anywhere. Everyone I have met here has been incredible. Welcome to town!

Thanks Samantha =) I will have to see if there are any pics of you in your hallloween costume. Thats one a few costumes I have attempted but never completed to my satisfaction =) this year I may have to opt for a bear costume or something very warm since I am not in San Diego anymore.... a real winter is coming and I am not prepared!

Mars! I will try to look for the frantic stage manager =) Hopefully I will remember to bring my glasses in so I can see more than a few feet in front of me.

I'm still hoping to find a carpool once I cross over the bridge. please forward my info if you know of anyone that I could meet up with fr the ride into DC.

I wholeheartedly recommend going! We just had Tempest here in Indiana last weekend, and both the show and the workshops were fabulous. She emphasizes so many important concepts in her workshops (like really thinking about what your intent is and *why* you're dancing before you get up on stage), has some great creative ways to get participants working through these concepts, yet is also one of the most friendly, approachable dancers I've ever had the pleasure to take a workshop with. So if you can go to either, do! :)

I wish I could go, it sounds like a fabulous show.

And Valkyrie, I've lived here about 8 years now (from Southern Cali too!) and I still hate driving down to D.C. by myself. Even though I've done it plenty enough that it should really stop bothering me by now. At this point I think it deserves a nom-de-phobe. I have dubbed it DCdrivophobia.

I hope you find a carpool, but if not, go anyway!

No carpool yet, but after all of the responses I have read to this post, plus the messages I have received in my inbox on tribe... I am convinced! Nothing can stop me from going now!! =)

Nazmiye: ...another West Coast Transplant! We should chat some time! How did you survive your first "real" winter!? My heart will always be in San Diego, but I am still looking forward to my "new life" here on the East Coast and very excited about all the cool, nifty, amazing people I will be meeting =)

I hope to be active in the local tribal / tribal fusion BD scene soon. Struggling though some financial hardships right now but soon I plan to take lessons with gypsy fusion and workshops with Belldonna.

Well, let me tell you my winter tales of woe.

First, I lived in Chicago for one year a while back. The winter I was there set records for the coldest winter ever in that city. I was used to 60 degree winters, not 60 degrees below zero winters. To be fair, a lot of that was wind chill, but it still amazes me that you could take one breath of air outside and have the snot inside of your nose freeze over. It was that cold.

So then I move to MD, and I'm thinking, "Well, sure it gets cold, but it's no Chicago." And then we get hit with the coldest winter and the worst icestorm in decades. It left us powerless for three days in freezing weather with no heat or hot water. And this was in Rockville-- not exactly the middle of nowhere. Three stinkin' days! Yeah, it was no Chicago, but at least in Chicago I never had to be cold for longer than it took me to get from my house, to the car-- which was suitably warmed up and waiting for me because that's what husbands are for.

As far as I was concerned everyone was lying to me when they said that Maryland winters weren't so bad. Dude, that was bad. A huge branch encased in ice fell out of the tree in our yard! People, it was not only cold, it was scary! It missed our house (and the room we were sleeping in) by about 5 feet. And it was loud, and boomy when it cracked off the tree and hit the ground.

I've now just accepted that other states are trying desperately to scare me off with horrible winter weather and threats of woody violence. But now that Maryland has realized I'm sticking around, most winters have been relatively mild.

Wear layers, invest in a good comforter-- I recommend one of the feather ones from Ikea, inexpensive and luciously warm. A nice thick coat that goes down to your knees really helps in windy, snowy weather, as does a pair of comfy waterproof boots (with no slip soles as things can get icey.) And a space heater in your bathroom so your showers aren't twice as long as they should be because it's just too damn cold to get out from under that awesome stream of hot water.
