The Other Side Cafe has changed its name to Filter (this is as of Wednesday, April 16 - I just happened to pass by that night).

Looks the same. Is Gypsy Night still there? Or has it been moved to another place called 'Other Side Cafe'?

Learn popular rhythms and techniques for dumbek, practice exercises, and ways to get the best sounds from your drum. Please bring a dumbek or similar drum. Dancers are encouraged to attend and will benefit in understanding rhythms and the sounds of the dumbek as well as learning the vocabulary for improvising drum solo performances.

2:00-3:30pm Intermed/Advanced Level $25 adv/$30 door
This class will focus on more complex rhythms and techniques, new drum solos and playing for belly dancers. Students must have at least one year experience with middle-eastern drumming. Beginners and dancers may also pay and observe the class.

Pix vs. video

Got a question for the dancer types here.... which one would you rather have after a performance - hi quality still shots or hi quality video? Debating which to get this year, a better camera, or a higher end camcorder. As most of my subjects are the dancers on stage, would like to know which one (stills or video) you all would find most useful.

I was thinking of having a party at my place for all the regular dancers / drummers from Gypsy Night. (My place is not yet a Starbucks, but who knows the way they pop up like weeds). Sabrina suggested doing it on the first Friday because people would most likely have that date still open. First Friday in June is June 6. Are you interested?

Just noticed that Gypsy Night in May happens to fall on Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Would any of you be interested in a raffle or other fundraiser for a holocaust organization? I could pick one that specifically focuses on Gypsy persecution if that seems more relevant.

Or am I just an overzealous activist that should keep this stuff out of a student showcase venue?

We have really enjoyed the opportunity to drum at Gypsy night and Egyptian Tea room! Thanks to all who make this happen and to all the beautiful dancers who we get to drum for! Unfortunately, through discussions, feedback, timing, and focus, as of April, DrumDogs won't be drumming at either of these events anymore. We are hoping to stop by on occasion as individuals to drum, but not as DrumDogs. Thanks everyone, it's been a blast!

Rowshan and I have succumbed to our desire to be Gypsies and are taking off and traveling the world. So we have to get rid of lots of stuff.

Our moving sale is this weekend. Sat. 7/21 9-5 and Sunday 7/22 10-2.

Furniture, musical instruments (and NO I'm not selling my kanun!!!!!), books, art supplies, office supplies and office furniture, housewares, stereo equipment.

I have a few belly dance related things: some Turkish belly dance VCDs; a bunch of coins, sequins and seed beads for those who make their own costumes; a pair of Saroyan zills; Oriental Belly Dance (A full color book on Turkish belly dance); and some other sparkley jingly things.

Thank you for giving the girls such a wonderful response, they were very excited. It was actually their second time performing in tribal. The first was just a couple of weeks ago, and the first song was the first we all performed too. AND it was a first for them to dance at the Otherside Cafe in front of other belly dancers so you guys really made them feel welcome, warm and fuzzy. I am so grateful. Have an awesome weekend!

November Gypsy Night

Greetings all,

Genevieve will not be able to make it and has asked me to coordinate the evening. I'd like to try something a wee bit different.

I'm going to round up some drummers and musicians to show up around 7:30 pm. We will practice and warm up for 1/2 hour.

From 8:00 - 8:15 we will have open dancing with the band playing while people arrive and get settled. Dancers can check in with me as to when they'd like to dance, if they have CDs or would like to dance to live music.

From 8:15 - 9:00 we will have our lineup of dancers. I suspect most will be dancing to recorded music. ; )

Depending on how many dancers we have waiting to dance, we can have more open dancing with live music for 15 minutes from 9:00 - 9:15.

9:15 - 10:00 more dancers.

10:00 till they kick us out (ok probably 11:00) the band can play for improve dancing, open dancing and general merry making.

Live music interludes

Hey kids,

I was wondering what your thoughts were on the live music deal at Gypsy night. I know we've had a few incarnations of music. I'm curious as to what you as audience members, dancers, and musicals think about the current situation. I'm wondering what you think would be good. In case you are sure here are a few of the things we've tried and a few ideas I have:

Recorded music only
DJ
Live music only
Some combination of the above

Do you like/would you like to see:
A scheduled period of recorded music and live band
Different bands scheduled to play
Invite a bunch of people and just jam together
A drum class/practice session before the show
Guest musicians

Fire tools at the Otherside?

I was wondering on Friday, if Atash could ever do any fire dancing there. It looks like the ceiling and fans may be a bit too low for big fire, but fire fingers and perhaps the transfer sticks would works. Fire fans especially overheard would be way too close but there might be some wiggle room with smaller stuff.

Difinitely not Auberon's fire wings!

Genevieve - can you check with the owner? Since the place was so packed on Friday, he may feel more inclined to include such a crowd-drawing act on a regular basis.
