Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (born 1971 in Oppdal, Norway) is one of the most important figures in creative music in Norway – and elsewhere – today.

Coming from a musical family of six sisters and brothers, and a father who played the organ, he started to play piano and guitar at an early age. He switched over to the bass guitar, playing in a gospel choir in his hometown when he was 12. At 18 he moved to norwegian city Trondheim, where he picked up the acoustic bass, and decided he wanted to study at the music academy there, a school that has shaped many of the influental figureheads of the norwegian contemporary scene today. In 1992 he got into the school, and studied there for three years with bassplayer Odd Magne Gridseth, saxophonist Jon-Paal Inderberg and pianist Erling Aksdal.

Since 1995 Ingebrigt Håker Flaten have been a professional musician based in Oslo, and have been an important musician in leading scandinavian bands such as The Source, Element, Maria Kannegård Trio, Petter Wettre Trio, and between 1997-04 toured the world with the famed norwegian keyboard/piano player Bugge Wesseltoft and his New Conceptions of Jazz. Together with Bugge he performed with internationally established artists such as John Scofield (US), Joshua Redman (US) and Eric Trufaz (FRA).

Today Ingebrigt Håker Flaten have released more than 40 recordings and is focusing his work in Atomic, The Thing with Mats Gustafson, Atomic/School Days, Scorch Trio with Raoul Björkenheim, The Electrics with Axel Dörner, Free Fall with Ken Vandermark, Close Erase with Christian Wallumrød, Tore Brunborg Kvartett and is regulary doing solo performances.

Ingebrigt Håker Flaten..s creative and highly original bass playing has been highly regarded all over the world and he have done several performances with major international artists such as Evan Parker (UK), Paul Lytton (UK), Joe McPhee (US), Joe Lovano (US), Yusef Lateef (US), Tony Oxley (UK), Iain Ballamy (UK), Dave Liebman (US), Chris Potter (US), Zim Ngqvana (SA), Benoit Delbeq (FRA), Dr.L.Subramaniam (IND), Billy Cobham (US), Jean Luc Pounty (FRA). He has frequently appeared at important international jazz festivals in Den Haag, Liége, Montraux, Athens/Georgia, Cape Town, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Paris, Istanbul, Saalfelden, Nice, Groningen, San Francisco, San Sebastian, Lüc, Nancy, London, Perpignan, Molde, Perth, Kongsberg, Berlin, Houston and legendary clubs such as New Morning in Paris, Quasimodo in Berlin, Ronny Scotts and Pizza Express in London, Knitting Factory and Tonic in New York, Empty Bottle in Chicago, Blue Note in Yokohama and Hemlock Tawern in San Francisco.

His musical expression is based on the language of jazz and improvised music, acoustic and electronic, but his interest in rock and ethnic music also shows through his collaborations with the norwegian rock bands Motorpsycho and Cato Salsa Experience as well as his work through Rikskonsertene
In July 2003, as the first bass-player in Norway, he released his solo-CD "Double bass" on the norwegian label SOFA.

He has at the tender age of 33 already managed to establish himself as one of the most important exponents of the younger generation of musicians on the european scene today. In July 2004 Ingebrigt Håker Flaten was awarded Kongsberg Jazzfestival official "Vitalprisen" – the highest award for jazz musicians in Norway.

Experimental music has a home in midtown – or at least it’s been invited crash there for a couple of months . . .

Iconoclastic noise, exploratory improvisation, hypnotic droning, and authentic "musique brut" have for decades been strong undercurrents affecting movement in Houston’s music (and art). They deeply impact what we hear and feel on the surface. But these scenes (or phenomena – underground music is often not coming from a ‘scene’) also produce many of Houston’s most well-known musical exports (unbeknownst to most Houstonians – even in the music and “cultural arts” communities).

“They, Who Sound” will offer two sets sampling a diverse range of underground music in Houston (with a potential for visiting artists as well) in the cozy environs of Backroom (the space behind The Mink). These shows are not to be missed. These events are early, there’s a bar and it’s on the train route!

Pioneers of European free improvisation, Han Bennink and Peter Brotzmann made a landmark statement together in 1968 with "Machine Gun", the incendiary recording by the Peter Brotzmann Octet. The two continued their groundbreaking collaboration in duo, trio, and quartet settings. After 12 years, the contrast between Brotzmann's severe intensity and Bennink's gleeful anarchy had run its course. In 1980, they went separate ways, playing the last concert of their fruitful 12-year collaboration.

In 2004, Brotzmann organized a series of performances to reunite the duo after a 24-year hiatus. Time added perspective to the work of both artists. Though he still turns up the high heat, Brotzmann now reveals a lyricism at heart of his fury. Bennink's physicality is still prominent; but he has shown himself to be an heir to the tradition of the great swing drummers like Baby Dodds, Jo Jones, and Max Roach.

An art student with connections to the Fluxes movement, Peter Brotzmann rejected a career in the galleries after hearing a concert by jazz legend Sidney Bechet. Self-taught on saxophones and clarinets, Brotzmann played modern jazz influenced by Ornette Coleman and worked with American greats like Don Cherry and Steve Lacy. He was crucial at the beginning of Europe's free improvisation movement. Brotzmann developed a style similar to radical American saxophonist Albert Ayler (without much knowledge of Ayler), an uncompromising, screaming cry that challenged itself to greater heights of rage and energy. Time added subtlety to his sound. Bluesy lyricism and timeless muezzin-like calls emerged in later years. He is one of the most influential saxophone players in free improvisation.

One of the hard swinging drummers in jazz and improvised music, Han Bennink has a reputation as an anarchic and electrifying performer. Well known for his physicality and sense of humor, Bennink's concerts lie somewhere in the realm of virtuosic percussion display and dadaist performance. He is famous for coaxing unusual sounds from his drums, augmenting his kit with found debris, and drumming on any surface available (walls, floors, chairs, his own body). In Holland in the 1960s, Bennink was quickly recognized as an uncommonly versatile drummer. He accompanied visiting jazz greats like Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy and Dexter Gordon. At the same time, Bennink helped to create a European improvised music that evolved an identity separate from its jazz roots. His collaborators in the worlds of free jazz and improvisation include most of the important artists in the music: Don Cherry, Misha Mengelberg, John Tchicai, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey, Steve Lacy, Eugene Chadbourne, and many others. Bennink has also performed with the punk rock band the Ex, with whom he has done two tours of Ethiopia.

Obama: Sleaze at any speed

Barack Obama's meteroic rise from rookie senator to presidential hopeful is like a made for TV movie.

He's a master at stirring up people with his rousing speeches but why is it that the media fails to hold this fraud accountable?

Here's just one example.

Obama is tugging at our heart strings by using his mother's death at the age of 53 for his political advantage, saying that in her last days she worried more about how she would pay for medical care than on anything else.

Yes, it's a sad story and he has my sympathy. But that stops quickly when Obama follows this with the "I have a plan to fix this which I'll try if you elect me."

Whoa, Nellie!

In case you don't know it, Obama is one of 100 members of the United States Senate, the most exclusive club in the nation. He's been there since January 4, 2005 and yet he never introduced any legislation incorporating this "plan." Ditto for the eight years he spent as a state legislator in Illinois.

So Obama is just another sack of poop as far as I'm concerned -- using his mother's death to forward his fraudulent agenda. Barack, baby, you are one of 100 senators. If your health care plan is so good, you don't have to wait. You can introduce the legislation now.

HOUSTON, TX – Come out to the Last Concert Café on Saturday, February 9th, and enjoy food, fun, and excellent live music, all to benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Houston/ Galveston, Inc. Bands The Black Math Experiment, Live Oak Decline, and Mo Pair and the Ugi Mooks, will be playing free to benefit the charity, and as a memorial to honor and celebrate 3-month old Aubrie Kristine Acosta who died of SIDS on January 12th.

The concert was put together by Acosta's grandparents, Brian and Amber Trafton owners of Wounded Rabbit Productions, to celebrate the great love and joy she gave to the world during her short stay on earth. Ronald McDonald House Charities provided comfort and support to the family during their time in the hospital, and now the family would like to give back to the charity by inviting you to this very special benefit.

Admission is $10 at the door. You will be able to enjoy the bands throughout the night starting at 8 pm. Food and drinks are extra, but the proceeds from the admission go directly to the charity.

Last Concert Cafe, one of Houston's oldest (and definitely friendliest) live-music venues continues to serve up great music and delicious Tex-Mex since 1949. LCC is known as the best place to catch jam bands in Houston, but also features funk, bluegrass, rock, blues, world beat, rockabilly and more!

On February 9th, the entertainment will include bands from various backgrounds starting with Houston's own The Black Math Experiment. Since their inception in 2004, they've become one of the state's leading live acts, often compared to DEVO and The Pixies. They became famous for the shout-along sarcas-hymn "You Cannot Kill David Arquette" whose subject met the song with great amusement, and sent the band a box of gourmet cupcakes in thanks.

Also playing is creative rock band Live Oak Decline, celebrating the 2007 release of their first full-length album HELLO WORLD, which has been acclaimed as a vintage perspective on modern times channeling the spirits of Coldplay, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and David Bowie.

Additionally, one of Austin's more interesting bands, Mo Pair and The Ugi Mooks, will be groovin' some bluegrass and folk music all for your entertainment.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Greater Houston/Galveston, Inc. is dedicated to improving the health and well being of children in Houston and Galveston. RMHC does this by creating, finding or supporting various local programs, including:
Jozef van Wissem (Holland) - renaissance lute

YOU KNOW YOU WANNA GO TO A FREE CONCERT WITH A RENAISSANCE LUTE!!!

When: Wednesday, January 30 , 2008 at 8 pm

Where: A site-specific performance at
The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum
4011 Yupon at Branard, Houston, TX (map)

Tickets: The concert is free of charge

Nameless Sound and The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum, in cooperation with The Menil Collection, presents:
Tetuzi Akiyama (Japan) - acoustic guitar
Jozef van Wissem (Holland) - renaissance lute

An artist of starkly contrasting styles, Tetuzi Akiyama gained international recognition as a member of Tokyo's "onkyo" scene of improvisers in the late 1990s. A groundbreaking and highly influential group, the onkyo musicians are known for zen-like subtlety, quietness and a remarkable use of silence. Akiyama's music can have these qualities, but his connections to blues and folk have always been clear. His acoustic performances are delicate, beautiful and expressive, often sounding like an intersection between country blues and traditional Japanese music.

Jozef van Wissem probably plays the most unlikely instrument in the world of contemporary improvised music: the Renaissance lute. He has accomplished the strange feat of bridging the idiom of seventeenth century lute literature and twenty-first century free improvisation. Van Wissem has largely stayed faithful to the particular timbre, resonance and playing technique of the lute. Van Wissem first came to be noticed a few years ago because of his conceptual approach to Renaissance lute music: he deconstructed existing compositions, for instance, by playing them backwards. He also composed his own pieces for lute, using palindromes and mirrored structures. His music therefore does not have a traditional linear progression, nor does it lead to a climax; rather, it stays at the same level of intensity. His music is quiet. It doesn't so much demand concentrated listening, but it brings the listener into a state of concentrated listening—an aspect that makes Van Wissem a natural partner to Akiyama's zen-like blues.

The Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum was opened in February 1997. Intimate in scale, the Chapel Museum is the repository in the United States for the only intact Byzantine frescoes in the entire western hemisphere. These masterworks from the 13th century—a dome and an apse—were stolen out of a chapel near Lysi in the Turkish occupied section of Cyprus in the 1980s, cut into pieces and smuggled off the island by thieves prepared to sell them piece by piece. The fresco fragments were rescued from the thieves by The Menil Foundation with the knowledge and approval of the Church of Cyprus, the rightful owner of the frescoes. The Menil Foundation then funded a painstaking two-year restoration of the paintings. Numerous private donors helped fund the construction of the Chapel Museum, which combines rough stone, opaque glass and rich woods to extraordinarily spiritual effect. The Church of Cyprus is allowing a long-term loan of the frescoes in the building designed especially for them by architect François de Menil.

The work of Cooper-Moore is a testament to commitment, vision, spirit, compassion, and invention. Born and raised in the Piedmont Area of the Virginian Blue Ridge Mountains, Cooper-Moore played piano in churches as a child prodigy. In the early 1970's he moved to New York, and began his association with the fertile and revolutionary "loft scene" of underground jazz, collaborating with such musicians as David S. Ware, Marc Edwards, and William Parker. An accomplished composer and virtuosic piano player, Cooper-Moore quit public performance in 1981, depriving the creative music world of a unique and vital talent. He dedicated himself to youth, working intensively with a variety of communities. He has developed and implemented his own music curriculum; and has been sent around the country by Head Start to teach it to others. For the last 25 years, Cooper-Moore has assisted the disabled, the incarcerated, the at-risk, and the underserved; affecting them with his passion and understanding of personal and community progress through creative work.

In the early 90's, Cooper-Moore returned to public performance and was discovered by a new generation of fans. His unique talents were a revelation. He is a renaissance man, whose performances encompass honest and insightful storytelling, wide-ranging explorations on hand-made instruments, and intensely virtuosic piano playing. Cooper-Moore is the quintessential "unsung hero". He is an artist who understands the urgent need for unique voices. He delivers on his commitments, both in the community and on the stage.

So many people tried to discourage her from producing and promoting this album (for her own good, of course) saying that a peace album would be a career ender.
*ArtCrawl Houston Celebrates 15**th** Year Downtown November 17*

Spend a day wandering the downtown warehouse district this Saturday
November 17 at the 15th Annual ArtCrawl Houston, 2pm to 9pm. There is no
single theme or curator for the ArtCrawl and more than 150 local artists and
20 buildings are participating this year; the art this unique conglomeration
brings surprises and special finds every year. As always admission and
shuttle transportation between warehouses are free.

The industrial warehouses scattered along the outskirts of downtown
offer the large, affordable spaces local artists require to create. ArtCrawl
developed when the downtown art community suffered a lack of activity due to
mass population migration to the suburbs. This year ArtCrawl Houston
celebrates its 15th year and as always everyone is invited to crawl through
the urban scene in Houston to view and purchase art from up-and-coming local
artists. November 17 is the Saturday before Thanksgiving; bring visiting
friends and family as the weather is sure to be great!

New to ArtCrawl this year is a partnership with Via Colorí, a street
painting festival at Sam Houston Park located at Bagby and Allen Parkway,
benefiting The Center for Hearing and Speech. Also new this year is
additional transportation provided by Ricky Rickshaw Rides; catch a ride on
the motorcycle gondolas driven by licensed professionals for between three
and five dollars a ride.

On the green ArtCrawl Shuttle route visit stalwart ArtCrawl
participant Commerce Street Artist Warehouse (CSAW) featuring three new
resident artists, Whitney Riley, Elaine Bradford and Kathy Kelly. Crawl
across the street to Kap & Suzy's Place to check out Leila Dallal's collage
pieces. Hop over the railroad tracks to Superstitious studio for paintings
by Leticia Balli, photography from Rosemary Rey and buy some stocking
stuffers from Houston Candle Company.

Crawl the original downtown artist community on the blue ArtCrawl
Shuttle route where Mother Dog Studios is holding a book signing with Henry
Skupin's for his new book "Growing Up on the Farm". Atelier Jacquinet studio
will feature poetry reading from nearly every poetry group in Houston. At
The Docks participate in the Silkscreen Station at DiverseWorks ArtSpace,
and Vine Street Studios will feature photographers from around the world in
*International Discoveries*. As a special treat, art car builder WT Burge is
heading up the new fabrication workshop and studio space at M.A.N studio.

Elder Street Artist Lofts, 1101 Elder St. will spotlight 12 artists at
the completely renovated Jefferson Davis Hospital. The building has been an
asylum, is constructed over a Civil War Cemetery, is rumored haunted, and
now provides affordable housing for local artisans. If the building's
history isn't enough The Elder Street entrance offers an amazing view of
Downtown; it's worth driving the extra mile.

Elder Street is one of the few warehouses located off of the free
ArtCrawl Shuttle routes, but these buildings are too great to miss. Easy
driving directions are available during the event at *
www.artcrawlhouston.com* <http://www.artcrawlhouston.com/> or hail a ride
from one of Ricky's motorcycle Rickshaws. Another interesting building off
the beaten path is the American Consumer Consortium, 341 N Hutcheson where
performance pieces will offer commentary on contemporary American culture.
Also check out the vibrant artist community developing on fourth floor of

The Westheimer Block Party, Free Press Houston’s twice yearly quasi-festival, returns this fall on Saturday October, 13th to its usual home on the 300-500 block of Westheimer road. Present will be the usual array of undergrounds artists, 50+ bands, performers of all strains, and lizard-toting revelers. Last May’s Block Party was our most successful with more than 4,000 attendees, excellent local reviews, and a great time had by all. Nonetheless, this fall’s event will host a slew of new elements with ‘Overgrown’, an outdoor installation exhibit that examines Houston’s burgeoning and destructive culture of expansion. Also, the ‘Abstraction’ Art Show will feature an exhibit of local artists in the newly renovated Avant Garden (formerly Helios). Notably, the event will host Houston’s 1st Solar Powered stage at Number’s courtesy of Armadillo Solar. (What can we say? After trashing the city for nearly 5 years with the rubbish of tabloid print, we feel like we should make a token gesture.) The Block Party will be home to 6 stages of live music at Number’s, Avant Garden, La Strada, and Mangos Cantina. Interspersed between all the great local music will be live painting, exhibits of all sorts, and many ‘cash and carry’ artist booths. Free Press openly invites artists to bring their works to the festival where space will be provided free of charge. Just bring a table.

***** POSTPONED ******* POSTPONED ******* POSTPONED ******

BAD NEWS - The free beach festival will be POSTPONED!! We are not able to get the permits in time for next weekend. We anticipate that we will be able to have the festival in a month's time.

We were told that no permits were needed to hold the festival at Surfside which is why we chose that location. When all the hotels and beach houses were rented, the Parks Dept anticipated the attendance to be significant and then required us to get a mass gathering permit, which will take more time.

GOOD NEWS - The "man" is working with us and will allow the festival to take place, provided we obtain the permits and meet all the requirements.

We have attempted to ignore "the man" previously with undesirable results. Some of you will remember the festival where "the man" came well equipped including helicopters with night vision, every law enforcement agency they could round up, and a temporary station set up across from the beach access road. We are hoping to avoid this scenario and work with the officials so that this festival can happen yearly or bi-yearly with their "blessings" instead of their "arsenal".

WE DO WANT TO GATHER on October 13th TO CLEAN ANOTHER AREA OF THE BEACH to show "the man" that we are serious about our intent to clean the beach. We hope this will help the festival's reputation as well. WE NEED 300 VOLUNTEERS ON OCT 13TH to clean the beach and help us show Surfside and Galveston officials that we are serious about cleaning the beach!

PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU CAN VOLUNTEER!!!

Our apologies to everyone for the inconvenience - we know everyone is excited and has already made exciting plans! We are equally bummed but know that it work out for the better.
No one can be arrested for smoking, but the establishments can be punished for allowing it. The transition will be tough on a lot of businesses. The thing that is learned from when Austin went this route back in '05, is that such businesses need to be prepared and have a good deck/patio area to cater to the smokers.

HOUSTON -- Gang activity is a problem in Houston, and more than half a dozen law enforcement agencies joined forces to fight back in an initiative that led to the closure of an apartment complex, KPRC Local 2 reported Thursday.

The multi-agency effort included undercover operations and special tactics spread over a four-week span and focused on the near northwest.

The initiative led to the closing of the Candlelight Trails Apartment Complex on DeSoto Street.

"There are many, many good folks out here that are trapped," Houston police Capt. Randy Ellen said. "They have no place else to go, but in order to live here they have to suffer the crime and drug dealing that's going on. We want to eradicate that."

Officials said the complex was closed because it was unlivable and had become a hot spot for squatters and drug activity.

Some nearby residents said they are no longer afraid to leave their apartments.

"It's been quiet, peaceful. Usually, I couldn't come outside," Christina Thomas said.

"It's a whole lot quieter back here now. It's a lot quieter," Grace LeBlanc said.

"We are doing everything we can to get rid of the drugs that are being distributed and those who distribute and manufacture them in complexes like this," said Ed Gallagher with the U.S. attorney's office.

Crime was down 11 percent during the operation, officials said. Calls for service were also down 16 percent.

"We're talking about a shooting, discharging of firearms," Assistant Chief Dan Perales said. "We're talking about people loitering on the street selling narcotics. We're talking about prostitutes in the area. We're talking about a general malaise."

"This was a beautiful neighborhood when I was a kid growing up, and it can still be. But, we'll just have to see which gangs are the best -- the ones on the street or our gang back here," said Chief J.C. Mosier with the Precinct 1 Constable's Office.

Even with the complex closed, the group plans to continue their fight.

"Once we clean the area up, we come back and maintain this area," Perales said. "Let us know what's happening in your areas, and we'll try to take care of the situation as best we can."

The participating agencies included the Houston Police Department, Harris County Sheriff's Office, Harris County Constables Precinct 1, METRO Police Department, Crime Stoppers, United States Attorney's Office, Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration and the Houston and Aldine independent school districts' police departments.

Investigators said other nearby apartment complexes have similar problems. They plan to try to close the neighboring Candlewood Apartments soon.

Now they are trying to pass into effect where these same cameras will judge whether or not people are coming to complete stops before turning right. My big issue is that these cameras are not reasoning beings... how will they judge correctly if a turn was done properly or not? Even though there is controversy, seems there is little opposition and this will soon be a new reality since they have discovered that they will profit greatly with these tickets. Below is a copy of the Khou report on this.

"Loophole closure could mean more red-light camera tickets"

07:55 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 22, 2007

By Carolyn Campbell / 11 News

11 News report

The Houston City Council said the red-light camera program is a success, and now they want to make it more efficient in cracking down on traffic violations.

The council wants to close a loophole that's letting some people off.

One of the busiest intersections when it comes to red-light camera tickets is West at the North Freeway. If City Council closes the loophole, more tickets could be issued there and at other locations.

Currently, motorists who don't come to a complete stop before making a right turn on red are not ticketed even if they're caught on camera.

But the Houston Police Department said it’s a violation of state law and wants City Council members to close what essentially has been a loophole for motorists who make the illegal turn.

According to the Houston Chronicle, since the red-light camera system went online about a year ago officers have had to ignore 16,400 right hand turns and nearly 4,000 left turns.

When the cameras were first installed, HPD wanted to err on the side of caution and avoid any confusion over whether a motorist actually stopped.

But one councilman said the technology does allow for officers to determine whether a turn is legal or not.

Since the red light cameras were installed last September, 89,000 citations have been issued through June 30 -- an average of 442 per day.

Many of those citations were ear
