why are we here?

i'm here cause the only thing i remember from high school is that hair has disulfide bonds connecting its double helix protein structure. that's it really. the rest of high school is a blur of big steam rollers, Sun-In, irons, scrunching. and gel.

and i'm into hair cause i always have been. i taught myself to braid before i could read. my mom refused to let me grow my hair until i could take care of it myself (she was clueless about hair). needless to say what once was a short curly red afro, now extends to my ass (nothing like mom saying you can't, to make you do something) she also never let me leave the house wearing a side ponytail.
i also grew up with black girls. nuff said. we take this stuff seriously.

and i also grew up in hawai'i. when i first moved here i had curly chin length strawberry blond hair, amongst a sea of long straight black hair. i felt weird. and its quite clear to me now that my relationship with my long hair is a direct result of my relationship with hawai'i. recognizing that this is my home forced me to accept greater responsibility for my hair.

in college cutting hair kept me in a steady supply of smokes, beer, bread and milk (i prefer barter system to cash). at peak time i was doing 2-3 cuts a day. i also dreamt of dropping out of college and going to beauty school. but in the long run i decided that i didn't want my art to become my livelihood. and my mom would have killed me.

and now I keep answering people's hair issues on other tribes that aren't specifically about hair, so a one-stop all you can comb tribe seemed like a good idea. but not many have taken the bait.... so invite your friends.

why are you here? oh please go on!!!!!!

I'm here because Lori asked me to join and I am tired of talking about psychological case formulations all day. A girl needs her beauty tricks, too.

We could also talk about bellydance hair styles and innovations.

brilliant. i am also tired of researching catastrophes all day. what a beautiful thing, this here tribe, keeping workers happy when work doesn't!

i love the bellydance hair style innovations idea too!!! bring it! (especially any anti frizz, and anti-sweat product recommendations! that don't end up dripping down your forehead???)

I was invited. I guess because I can be a little vocal on hair questions on other tribes I belong to. I do have a license but I don't work in the biz now. Maybe someday, my winning Powerball ticket will allow me to open up my own salon. But not now.

Anyway, I love hair. Always have. Even as a little girl, I never liked baby dolls. Only the dolls with long, combable hair were the ones I'd play with.

          I was invited to join.

Also, I have a growing loving respect for my natural hair. As a Black woman, I've been taught since childhood to fight against my natural curls and kinks. It's only in the past two years that I've decided to learn to love and respect the hair that naturally grows from my scalp. This journey has been a long one - an ongoing one, in fact. But I'm so glad for the privilege of learning what my hair likes, what makes the curls look lush and moisturized, and all the millions of things I can do with my natural hair.

I look forward to sharing hair tips with you all.

And hee to Bryna Rose - yes, we Black girls *do* take our hair quite seriously.

I was invited, and I joined because I love doing my hair, but I'm not very good at it. I thought I could learn a thing or two from you guys!

Hello hair lovers! I have just moved and I’ve been without DSL for close to a week. Oh, the pain. What a lovely surprise to return and see that this tribe has sprung to life!

What does hair mean to me? For as long as I can remember, I’ve had an attraction to long hair. For me, it evokes a mystical, otherworldly quality. It symbolizes freedom of the spirit. I was first attracted to my husband because he wore his thick, gorgeous hair down past his butt. Sadly, he has since cut it because it started to thin out on the top. He is still sexy and wonderful of course 

Ironically, I have very fine hair so it is nearly impossible for me to wear my own hair longer than to the middle of my back. I fight the good fight though and wear it as long as possible.

What Bryna Rose wrote was very thought provoking. I am 1/8 Hawaiian. My father was raised in Honolulu. He moved to California to go to college, so I grew up on the mainland, but I spent a lot of time in the islands. I, too, admired the long lovely hair of the local girls. I think this is were my fascination with long hair comes from.

    i am here because i love bryna's hair! :)

i had a mean grandmother who hated the long hair my sisters and i had. we would climb trees, skip and play all day and she would take us to the mall for a cheap chop and make us brush 100 strokes a night. my mom was always furious and would threaten to not let us visit again. until 3rd grade when i would not stand for it any longer. i grew it out and kept it long for many years. i finally decided i should face the short do. on my terms. so i found darren of CHOP CHOP in hollywood. he is soooooo good. i am on my second cylce of grow it down to my ass and then cut it up to my shoulders. i am on the grow it out tip. i need to go in for a shapely trim now that i think about it.
    thanks bryna rose,
    naomi

    i miss hawaii!

Hey all, I was invited too. Well what can I say any question on tribe that I can put in my 2cents on I do with hair. I am a stylist but not a pretentious one that keeps all my secrets to myself, if I can help or share that's what I do.

I am an active cosmetologist and currently working in a pretty cool shop but I enjoy sharing ideas and tips if and when I can. My secrets are you secrets!

My haircare philosophy is keep it simple, but dont be afraid to experiment once in a while, but donot compromise the hair's strength. I get clients all the time who have killed literally the shine and strength of their hair I just don't get it. It is meant to have fun with to convey a personality, but I often wonder if they have something going on in their lives that contributes to the torture thier hair has indured? hmm hair? A funny funny thing huh?
