no more bad hair days

I decided I had enough bad hair days in my life that I would take care of it once and for all. yes I shaved it all off. I love it. shave it at night and in the morning get up wash up put on makeup and go. I do not get the rude remarks as i expected. I get more complimants on my facial features and makeup now than when i had hair. I went to a kids birthday party with my son this past weekend, and a little girl probably age 4 came up to me and nicely said "you don't have no hair." I said (in a sweet voice "no, I don't do I?" the little girl just looked at me and said "you need to get some" As I busted out laughing I said "ok, I will do that" that is the only person that has said anything out of the ordinary to me since I shaved my head at the begining of the year. I am still loving it.

HOW do you get your hair to grow?! How do you keep the ends from drying out and spitting to your arm pits? I've tried washing it a lot, washing it a little, leave in conditioners, oils, NO conditioner, natural soaps, the most expensive stuff, vitamins, minerals, hair foods, you name it!!!! I wonder if chlorine is the main culprit. Maybe a filter for the shower.... any other tips, recomendations, help of some kind? I'll take all the help I can get!!!!

Can anyone help me with my hair?

My hair is long and curly, and very hard to cope with. Eventually if it's healthy enough i want to straighten it. I'd rather have long hair than curly hair. The problem is that it doesn't really seem to want to grow. I had to cut about seven inches off of it two summers ago and it's almost grown back to the way it was, but it's like it's reached a dead end. I'm using a good quality, natural shampoo, trim it regularly, put sunscreen on it at the beach, do protein and deep conditioning treatments, put vegetable glycerin in my hair (which, by the way is the best conditioner that has EVER worked for me!) and it still gets split ends and dries out. I've tried all kinds of things. Mayonnaise, eggs, top-of-da-line-oh-mygod-prices hair products, every natural shampoo you can think of and I still have trouble!
Heeeeeeeelp!

hair reflects the spirit

I've always had this funny spiritual thang with my hair. I don't know where I picked the idea up--maybe it was that Rasta lover?

My hair reflects my spirit. It is like its dress. My hair is long and curly and likes to get all tangled together in fuzzy, sweet nustles when I sleep. My hair is frizzy sometimes and locked sometimes. My hair is free. My hair loves the ocean. It likes to be petted and smelled. It likes to hang on my bare neck and back. It changes color. It grows slowly and surely.

My hair has been thru some shit. It started off as barely nothing at all. (I didn't get hair until I was 3). It was a big red curly fro during the middle years and it was often made fun of. (I was called Annie). The saddest year for my hair was when I chopped it all off for the feathered look in '87 (4th grade was rough). I have let it grow ever since. It got all dreaded up into one giant lock in the back of my head when I was 15. I was all strung out and fell asleep for 2 days. When I woke up it had transformed into a rat. It messed with me while I drove my car (I was living in the car) and it scratched at my neck. I finally cut it off with a razor blade and thru it into the Great Mississippi. I swear fish are still nibbling at that son of a bitch.

When I got pregnant at 18 it started to really grow. It likes to be pregnant. It also likes this tribe because I get to finally open up about its spiritual task of being a dress.

gotta go wash my hair cuz its my birthday....kandi

Anyone heard of hena?

Henna is a great alternative to conventional dyes. It coats and seals your hair with protien (and the color), instead of penetrating, leaving it soft and smooth. It doesn't last as long, but it won't destroy your hair. It comes in all colors. It will not make your hair lighter. I looooove henna!

i'm dying to get some, but only based on the smell! i've used some jurlique skin products that were amazing (and smelly-licious). has anyone tried any of the shampoo/conditioners?

i'm very fussy about shampoo and conditioner---rather, my hair is fussy.

why are we here?

i'm here cause the only thing i remember from high school is that hair has disulfide bonds connecting its double helix protein structure. that's it really. the rest of high school is a blur of big steam rollers, Sun-In, irons, scrunching. and gel.

and i'm into hair cause i always have been. i taught myself to braid before i could read. my mom refused to let me grow my hair until i could take care of it myself (she was clueless about hair). needless to say what once was a short curly red afro, now extends to my ass (nothing like mom saying you can't, to make you do something) she also never let me leave the house wearing a side ponytail.
i also grew up with black girls. nuff said. we take this stuff seriously.

and i also grew up in hawai'i. when i first moved here i had curly chin length strawberry blond hair, amongst a sea of long straight black hair. i felt weird. and its quite clear to me now that my relationship with my long hair is a direct result of my relationship with hawai'i. recognizing that this is my home forced me to accept greater responsibility for my hair.

in college cutting hair kept me in a steady supply of smokes, beer, bread and milk (i prefer barter system to cash). at peak time i was doing 2-3 cuts a day. i also dreamt of dropping out of college and going to beauty school. but in the long run i decided that i didn't want my art to become my livelihood. and my mom would have killed me.

and now I keep answering people's hair issues on other tribes that aren't specifically about hair, so a one-stop all you can comb tribe seemed like a good idea. but not many have taken the bait.... so invite your friends.

why are you here? oh please go on!!!!!!

to headband or not to headband?

my troubles stem from the fact that i can no longer comfortably wear my hair down unless it's the middle of the night, hence 3 degrees cooler than the day. i have thick hair that hangs halfway down my back. i wear it up ALL the time (boring), but have trouble with flyaways and wispies. it's windy here!

i'm hair's breadth away from purchasing a headband, although i'd try to avoid the terry cloth variety.

other compounding matters: i refuse to use styling products, headbands interfere with my glasses behind my ears, i'm nerdy and uncommonly stubborn.

i dare you to help!

i've come across some mixed feelings regarding oils in the hair. some say good, some say they actually dry more. some say it depends on hair type. what might you have to say?

i like them as an alternative to gel for that slickster look, but i haven't found one that i love yet. they're either too greasy or not enough. ideas?
