Right before Christmas I was in line at the "serve yourself" postal machine at the post office. It lets you weigh an actual box and put postage on it yourself.

It's often faster than waiting in the long lines to ship things at Christmas time.

Any, so I had like 6 boxes to ship and was posting them at this machine. The line for the actual post office was like 20 people long and the line for the machine I was on was about 10 people long.

I heard this guy about half way down the line hurumph and angerly tell his kid, "come on, lets get in the other line, this woman will take two weeks." Then he left the line and started walking.

Had he just said "I don't have time for this, let's get in the other line" I might not have said anything... some people don't wait well. The fact that he said I was going to take "two weeks" irked me though.... SUCH and exageration just makes him look like an impatient fool.

I didn't want to add to the stress though so I just turned around and said "wow, did that make you feel better?"

There were some in line that smirked. The guy that left the line looked pissed and maybe annoyed that I had taken his brutish power away from him.

I politely turned to the people closest to me in line and said, "I'm sorry I have so many boxes but my family is really close so I have lots of presents to mail."

A couple of them smiled and the lady behind me said, "hey, we are all here doing the same thing. Take your time. I'm not in a rush."

Somehow we were all happy again.
I was at the post office yesterday and I stood in line like everyone else at the serve-yourself weighing and postage machine where you can do your own packages.

Most people in that line had multiple packages. I had ten.

There was a guy a couple people behind me who started bitching and said he was going to get in the regular line because "she looks like she will take a few weeks."

I turned and said "did that make you feel good?" I think people were surprized I said anything. I turned to everyone and said "I'm sorry, I baked gingerbread cookies for everyone in my family and everyone who came to our wedding and it turned out there are a LOT of boxes. This is the last of them and I am sorry it's taking so long."

After that people started asking me about the cookies and how long it took and fun it would be to get a package of decorated gingerbread men in the mail and... well.. it just got much happier and we all calmed down.

People need to remember that the holidays are busier....we are ALL busier... AND <for the most part> we are all busier because we are trying to make other people smile.

WELCOME
FREE HUGS has a humble and simple beginning...

In the aftermath of a profound event in his life, Jason Hunter walked the South Beach sands in contemplation of the human spirit. He had just lost a person who embodied faith, love and hope; all with a simple hug.

The loving aspect of the human spirit was something he counted on, yet as he looked into the faces of others who passed, he had the sudden, overwhelming urge to share what he had all his life, a free hug.

Knowing it was far-fetched, but it would turn heads, Jason painted a sign that read, "FREE HUGS," which changed his contemplated walk to an upstart campaign to embrace as many people as possible.

Noticing Jason with the FREE HUGS sign, a young woman was pleasantly surprised. Without asking what FREE HUGS represented, she immediately embraced Jason. This first hug snowballed into a long line of people waiting to give hugs.

Trying FREE HUGS out the next day produced a greater response. Amazement seeped into Jason's being when he realized what FREE HUGS could become.

Jason decided to market FREE HUGS as an icon of community and prosperity. Branding the logo on clothing (something everyone uses) was a logical step in this venture.

As of today, FREE HUGS consists of a sale of products and a place of networking; bringing people together.

On Monday, September 17, 2007, it will be the one-year anniversary of the day Portland Police Officers Christopher Humphreys & Kyle Nice and Multnomah County Deputy Sheriff Bret Burton brutally assaulted and killed James Chasse, Jr., a man with schizophrenia who had committed no crime. They tasered him repeatedly, punched, kicked and kneed him until nearly all of his left ribs were broken, his lungs were penetrated, his internal organs hemorrhaged and he went into cardiac arrest. The officers who did this told eye witnesses that Chasse was a “transient” & “on drugs” when they knew he had a home address and it was later revealed there were no drugs in his system. Officers turned medical professionals who arrived on the scene away, choosing to take a dying Chasse to jail instead of the hospital. They kept him in custody for an hour until jail personal refused to take him. Chasse was pronounce dead shortly after at the hospital.

NONE OF THE OFFICERS INVOLVED WERE FOUND TO HAVE ACTED OUTSIDE OF THE LAW. NO ONE HAS BEEN HELD ACCOUNTIBLE FOR THIS DISGUSTING ACT.

Since Chasse’s death, Mayor Tom Potter & Police Chief Rosie Sizer have mislead the public to believe that James Chasse died because he was not being taken care of by a crumbling mental health system. Now, the City of Portland is fighting a legal battle to keep the details of the internal investigation secret from the public.

JAMES CHASSE DID NOT DIE BECAUSE HE WAS MENTALLY ILL. HE DIED BECAUSE THE POLICE BEAT AND TASERED HIM UNTIL THEY KILLED HIM.

Now, on the one-year anniversary of Chasse’s death, Portland will stand up to say that we have not forgotten what happened and we will not let it happen again. We demand justice for James Chasse and all victims and survivors of police brutality who came before him. We demand transparency and oversight into the actions of the police. We demand Mayor Potter and others who hold elected power stop distracting the public and hold the offending officers accountable. We are not fooled. We will not live in fear. We will not compromise. We say NO MORE UNNECCESSARY DEATHS BY PORTLAND POLICE AND NO MORE VIOLENT TARGETING OF THOSE DEEMED “UNDESIRABLE” BY ELECTED OFFICIALS, BUSINESS OWNERS & THE POLICE.

Join us as we confront the powers that be in an all day demonstration across the street from the Central Precinct Cop Station (Downtown on SW 2nd & Main St, just over the Hawthorne Bridge). An outraged and heartbroken group of citizens will start the day’s events at 8 am and remain until 4 pm.

The event will feature an informal array of speakers (including YOU!), sign making and waving, sidewalk chalk art & banners. Please bring yourself, your family, your friends, fellow activists, co-workers, noise, tears, laughs, chants, drums, music, signs, chalk, cookies, coffee, water, bikes, cameras, your heart, your passion, your voice.
The 23rd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day is
Saturday, September 15th, 2007
9 AM to Noon

California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. On this day, 50,000 volunteers turn out to over 700 cleanup sites statewide to conduct what has been hailed by the Guinness Book of World Records as "the largest garbage collection" (1993). Since the program started in 1985, over 750,000 Californians have removed more than 12 million pounds of debris from our state's shorelines and coast. When combined with the International Coastal Cleanup, organized by The Ocean Conservancy and taking place on the same day, California Coastal Cleanup Day becomes part of one of the largest volunteer events of the year.

Coastal Cleanup Day is the highlight of the California Coastal Commission's year 'round Adopt-A-Beach program and takes place every year on the third Saturday of September, from 9 a.m. to Noon. In 2007, that day falls on September 15. Coming at the end of the summer beach season and right near the start of the school year, Coastal Cleanup Day is a great way for families, students, service groups, and neighbors to join together, take care of our fragile marine environment, show community support for our shared natural resources, learn about the impacts of marine debris and how we can prevent them, and to have fun! Coastal Cleanup Day is also the kick-off event for Coastweeks—three weeks of coastal and water-related events for the whole family.

Participating in Coastal Cleanup Day is as easy as 1, 2, 3! Pre-register with your local Coordinator, or simply show up at any of our drop-in sites (which will be placed on the county contact pages as they become available).

For more information, contact us at (800) COAST-4U or coast4u@coastal.ca.gov. Join us on Saturday, September 15, from 9 a.m. to Noon for the 23rd Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day.
