Ok my 94 Explorer really is on it's last legs. I got smacked from behind in a parking lot and now there's a gap at the bottom of the rear door, by the exhaust pipe ... NOT good...
I'm thinking about a Ford Freestar or Chryster Town & Country -- I've heard not-so-good things about the Dodge Caravan...
Any comments? Recommendations? Places to absolutely avoid buying from???

Re: So, what do YOU drive??
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 12:19 PMI would go to your local library and check out the Consumer Report guide to cars (they have new and used). They will tell you by brand and model how reliable the car is and give it an overall rating. I try to steer toward Consumer Report's "Best Buys" personally. If it were me, I would see what Consumer Reports has to say about the Freestar and the Town & Country, as well as other vehicles in the same class.
Currently, I drive a Saturn Ion. Saturn's may not be at the level of a Honda or a Toyota, but their level of service in unmatched. And, they have "no pressure" sales tactics. As for where to buy, I would never buy from Bob Serpentini, but that's only because his commercials irritate me and he's a right-wing Republican. -

Re: So, what do YOU drive??
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 12:56 PMYes Hondas and Toyotas were top rated (I signed up for Consumer Reports on line -- too cold to go out to the library). Dodge Caravan was the worst rated ... maybe that's why so many used one are for sale? The Toyota & Honda mini vans are harder to find and seem to be costing more than Freestar or T&C... My Uncle Marv like his Windstar so much that he bought a second one, and his daughter (my cousin) just loves her Freestar. I really love my Explorer, but the cargo area is just a little too small.
Glad you said something about Serpentini! I totally respect his right to make irritating commercials that I disagree with... but I'm sure there's plenty of people who agree with his views buying cars from him JUST because they agree - he doesn't need my $$! -

Re: So, what do YOU drive??
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 1:11 PMAnother car to consider - the Subaru Forresters have been rated Best Buys a number of years by Consumer Reports and my friends really like theirs. However, it may be too small for you. -

Mon, December 3, 2007 - 1:17 PMThat guy's voice IRRITATES me !!!!!! But I do like to watch his commercials to see his really awkward hand gestures ...

Re: So, what do YOU drive??
Mon, December 3, 2007 - 4:04 PMI drive a '99 Honda Odyssey and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! I get around 20 - 22 MPG and it packs awesomely for Pennsic@! (or wherever else you need to pack it to go).
Although I got an alright deal on it, the "deal" was the bigest headache I've ever dealt with! Don't EVER go to Fred Martin Stupidstore!!! Nightmare, I tell you! And I totally agree with Celeste and Melanie... Bob Serpentini... <gag!>
Good luck in your endeavors, Helen! -

Re: So, what do YOU drive??
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 7:07 AMhey Helen - I LOVE my Toyota Matrix. I bought it used (a 2003 in 2005)- but with less than 10,000 miles on it. It's just the right size for me, Angry Bob, Angry Kosmo (and all of his stuff) and our 90 lb. golden retriever, Angry Sam. It also fits all of our Pennsic stuff - though not with Sam and Kosmo. But they don't get to go to Pennsic, anyway, so it's not a big deal!! We've had no problems with it and have only had to do regular maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, new tires)
I bought it through Metro Toyota, but at the last minute - literally as I was going to sign - they changed the financing options. Luckily Celeste was with me to play hard ball - if you're mild mannered, like me, take someone who can be a hardass - because I think they ALL will try to screw you in the end. -

Re: So, what do YOU drive??
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 7:41 AMThanks for the suggestion... I didn't find specific cargo area dimensions on the web, but I'm going to test drive some vehicles tomorrow, I'll bring my measuring tape along and check out a Matrix. I didn't see a towing package option, so I assume I can't use one to haul a trailer, therefore everything must fit inside.
The cargo area of my Explorer is less than TWO INCHES too small at the top for my largest animal crate. Barely two inches!!

Re: So, what do YOU drive??
Tue, December 4, 2007 - 7:41 AMWhat are you trying to say about me? Hmmmm? Yes, I think the words "Bait and Switch" and "State Attorney General's Office" convinced them that it would be wrong to not honor your deal. You cannot run a newspaper ad that says, "All Toyotas on the lot at 3.9% financing" and then say, "Oh, but your's is 5.9%." Homey don't play that. You did get a smokin' deal, though.
I am not a fan of car dealers. I am happy that I didn't have to haggle for my Saturn. The price was the price. Then they gave me $2,000 cash back and 0% financing. Where they try to make up their money at Saturn is by sellling you extra "gap" insurance and maintenance plans. -
