Outlaw Machine
by Brock Yates
ISBN: 0-316-96718-1
I read this book a few years ago and should probably read it again. I found it to be an interesting historical review. Brock Yates delivers an easy-to-read accounting of America's most popular motorcycle.
Overall the story reflects favorably on HD. What stood out most then as well as now is the portion about HD fixing motorcycle racing back in the (60's?) or so. I really do need to re-read it to quote anything remotely factual. In a nutshell though Harley controlled the rule making. This enabled them to literally rule-out any machine that wasn't built very closely to their own machines power plants. Rule out the other machines and Harley wins by default when the track is filled with Harley's.
Another subject touched upon is the AMF years and the decline of favor; being saved by the outlaw bikers who remained loyal; and how the company has been turned around since the 80's.
Good or bad, what's your favorite Harley-related book?

Re: Recommended Reading
Mon, October 9, 2006 - 6:35 AMYeah, I went down to Border's Books a few years back when Sonny was in town signing his book and got a copy (there's a pic of us together in my photo album).
I've been pretty quick to point out to plenty of other people the same thing, that Sonny admits the Harley's Only rule wasn't necessarily the best rule they ever made.
I have yet to pick up his follow-up book yet. Has anybody read it? I'm just wondering how it compares to the first one.
