My observations from daily riding over many years is that when you stop riding a Harley and switch to another bike, Harley riders stop waving to you. Sure, there are a few oddballs that are decent or accidently wave before they realize you're not on a hog, but for the most part they just don't wave.
Petty point, the wave? I think not. The dissolution of a polite society is the sure sign of a nation in decline. Aren't we all supposed to be brothers in the saddle? That's how I was raised. Shouldn't matter what style of riding or make of bike you're into.
Be cool to your fellow rider until he/she proves that they don't deserve to be treated with respect. Every year I lose several friends to motorcycle accident deaths. We're already too small of a circle to bicker amongst each other.
Besides, if you ride a Harley, I know from experience that you'll be in a position on the side of the road one day to wish you'd been nicer to those Goldwingers that go sailing past your broke-down ass!
Be cool and ride safe everybody!

While my/all harleys break (more than others) it is hard to see goldwingers as riders cause they are so close to being cagers.

Re: What's with not waving?
Mon, May 28, 2007 - 6:16 PMWell i ride Jap and harley , suzuki Vstrom DL650 and a harley sportster 883 .
I havent noiticed anyone on a harley not waving to over bikers on different makes.
Somtimes when im on my suzuki i find it hard to wave because im doing a manovour , and the same goes as in riding the harley .
I guess im kind of an out cast , cause i dont fully understand the thing with harley vs jap , vice versa .
BTW ..... I have more probs with my suzuki than my harley , actully i had no probs with my harley, is this all in good fun , or is there a serious element to it ?
Thanx -

Re: What's with not waving?
Tue, May 29, 2007 - 3:56 PMWell first things first. Once again this spring I've noticed the RUB's not waving at me. I have stopped waving first to cruiser bikes but always return a wave when it's flashed.
"is this all in good fun , or is there a serious element to it ?"
Actually, I like HD motorcycles okay, as long as I don't need to depend on one daily again. I may even purchase another one someday. This tribe was created to bitch about the corporation itself. Bikers kept the marquee alive when the AMA and everybody else wrote them off in the 70's. Now that they're on top again, they don't make one decent bike for the "working-class" man. Waaaaay over-priced. Then just try accessorising one. Personally I'm a believer in crafting what you put on (or take off) your bike. But for those without the skills, why should they get raped in the wallet for personalizing their pride and joy?
It's disgusting.
Thanks for posting!

Re: What's with not waving?
Tue, February 28, 2006 - 9:40 AMJ, I think you're right on the money.
In the interest of full disclosure and fairness, I have to admit being the arrogant one when I was in my early 30's and bombing around on a '75 FX 1200 with drag pipes, mini apes, S&S carb, etc, etc... It intsilled quite the feeling of arrogance when riding.
Yet I always somehow managed to wave to on-coming bikes, no matter the make or style...

Re: What's with not waving?
Sun, October 8, 2006 - 11:36 PMROY,if by chance we pass each other on the road one day and i don't wave....don't take it personal.Ya see I stopped wavin about 10 years ago.I just got tired of people tryin to "take back,or half wavin" when then figured out that the very old, very loud bike w/ape hangers flyin at them was NOT a Harley. Now as for stopping to help another rider.....I always do and always have, and most likely alway will,no matter if I'm on the bike or in the pick-up.The other thing I always do is give that rider one of my little cards that say, "WOULD YOU HAVE STOPPED FOR ME?" ........sure do get some funny looks with them cards. Be well. "FTF" -

Re: What's with not waving?
Mon, October 9, 2006 - 6:32 AMRight on FTF
I remember those cards from "back in the day", they used to be more popular and seem to slowly be making a come-back. I think maybe I'll make up a personal one, since, like you, I always stop to offer assistance to a bike in need, no matter that it's a Vespa, Gold Wing, or anything in between.
Since I originally posted this thread I've started waving to the Harley riders again anyways (most of the time...). Fuck it, it doesn't hurt me none to give a courtesy wave.

Re: What's with not waving?
Thu, May 31, 2007 - 7:02 PMahhh i see , i got it all wrong !! .
yes i do have to agree i dont like the harley corp really , but i do love my sporty.
I havent upto now bought any of the harley clothes, except for the FXRG nylon suit because it is very good in my opinion.
There is good and bad for all sides, with my suzuki it is differcult to do routine maintence, like chaninging the oil, changing the spark plugs, and the chain maintence just get on my nearves where with my sporty it is so simple.
I cant honalty agree with every thing people say about harley, but there again i do agree on alot , like with the relibility issue , i dont agree with cause i have never had any problems with my harley .
Im lucky enough to have a job where it is my job to ride, no i dont race, and no im not a factory tester so i do ride all year long, winter , and summer .
I agree , harley are a little over priced, but i chose my sporty , because i can configure the bike to fit me instead of me fitting the bike,i hate forward controls, but i dont want to be crambed into a bike all because it has a cool look to it.
Comfort for me far out weighs cool looks , esp in winter , or long journeys .
I looked at the gold wing, and to tell you the truth, i drooled, i can honastly say i cant find anything wrong with the gold wing even if i tried , exept , proberly the weight of the bike, if for some reason it was droped, and your alone in the middle of no where, and no one to help pick the bike up .
Anyways sorry for re posting late i was away from home, with out my lap top.
Kewl forum btw :)
And no you dont have to worry , im not a harley fanatic, nore am i really going to stick up for alot of the stuff they do .
I my self was a assist director in my harley chapter , but .. got told to go to all of the meetings on my harley, scince i had a habit of useing my suzuki to go to the meetings, i left shortly after that, and never looked back , like i had the time anyways to goto all these meetings.
thanx nuff said
Please ride safe no matter what you ride

Re: What's with not waving?
Fri, June 1, 2007 - 10:54 AMIain, you're welcome here any time man. Some of my closest friends still ride Harley's. All of us have at least owned one or more in the past; I've owned a 91 Heritage Softail and a 76 FX 1200 mildly chopped and with a beefy kicker-only motor. I can't say that I didn't enjoy either bike, the FX was by far more fun to ride for a guy like myself.
It's cool that you get to ride for work everyday, that is my dream job; moto-journalist. I used to ride motorcycle funeral escort, and I'm working at getting back into the industry again to where I can get paid for riding.
As for maintenance, I understand what you are saying. My 06 Tiger is a bitch to maintain because so many difficult components have to be removed. On the other hand, my 73 BMW is a breeze to work on and I really enjoy tinkering with it.

Re: What's with not waving?
Fri, June 1, 2007 - 1:08 PMThanks Roy for the welcome.
This is a very refreshing forum i have to admit.
It isent often, you find a forum about hd , and aloud to have a go, with out some sort of gorrila type person coming in, being very defencive about hd , and calling everyone bad names.
Fav quate from these types , " get a real bike " (in so many words) hmmm well damn if it has 2 wheels and can go above 30 mph , and has more than a 50cc engine , to me it is a real bike, in saying that im not knocking mopeds, like everything , there is a time and place for things, and they make a good training bike, but in my mind can be dangerous because of the lack of ( get out of trouble ) power.
Okay now my bitch about hd .
I think HD are taken way to serious on many counts , and mostly unjustyfied.
They have yet to make a decent sport bike, i tryed the buell , and although brutal in power, the handling wasent upto par with there japanese cousins .
There desighn in the new bikes, like the Vrod , is almost dangerous, esp in the sport bike version, with the pegs in the racing pos, whitch is good for me, but the bike does not handle like a sport bike, i some times, wonder how many 1st time wanna be bikers, have bought this model, and think they can take on somthing like a hayabusa, are a kawi zzr650 in the courners .
The harley sportster is susposed to be there starter bike, and it is a good honest simple bike , but it dosent have the handling as a starter bike, infact i would go as far to say it is a bike for the exserianced rider , guess im going to get flamed on this hehehe , considering it is susposed to be a girly bike.
I have had a 07 streed bob, although i loved the looks, the street bob , was a little easer (for me ) to handle than the sporty but wasent me, it looked cool, and stuff but i just didnt like it for somone reason .
Back to the topic of not waving ...
It is a minor thing people dont wave back , but the explantion into today way of thinking could be the clue , im not entirly convinced that it is harley rider's alone, im sure it isent.
But it does show a tendacy to be rude, or ignore somone who is riding a diffrent make than them self or different style of bike .
As it was pointed out on this posting page or another "would you stop for me if i was in trouble" ??
thankyou
iain
