Fallen Angel is out of action for a while

Hi everyone,
I know I've been unusually quiet since BM. I returned to LA hastily, to meet headfirst the mountain of work that was waiting for me on the other side of the mountain pass I used to drive home. I can't speak in specifics about what I'm doing, but suffice to say I'm working with some very important people and projects in the political, business, and entertainment world here in Los Angeles, which leaves me very little time at the moment for anything else. Just over last weekend alone I did a 28 hour day. Compounding my self imposed hermitage is the usual "wait for your money" thing, which leaves me strapped until the projects are in the can, at which point I actually get paid.

I applied for us for Decom a month before BM, and didn't receive any response until a month after BM was over (just late last week), but I figured that everyone was so burnt out from BM itself, I decided not to continue the process. I know that everyone will enjoy themselves at Decom, just relaxing.

Unfortunately, due to my schedule and a flurry of meetings going from Friday to throughout the weekend, I won't be able to make it up this weekend for Havana Room Decom, nor for SF Decom. I may not even make it for LA Decom due to an important dinner meeting that same day.

I miss you all, and had a wonderful time building and running The Havana Room with such an excellent group of people. In a few months, when I have time to breathe, I will come and visit.

Enjoy SF Decom, and enjoy Havana Decom, I will think of you all and smile, my friends. Thank you for all of your hard work.

I’m renting out a theater space in Hollywood, CA, on April 12 and making it available for free to artists, performers and anybody else who just wants to come out and participate. It’s The Thing.

And it'd make a good/place time for Havana Room people to meet up...

There’s a number of artists, musicians, DJs and more that have expressed an interest. How about you?

Contact me for details!

Hello to all the Havana Room peoples. We have had a spell of radio silence to get all our lives back together. But we need to get moving on this year's plans, if there are to be any. The rental space in West Oakland is costing $, the container is still in ruins, and we need to plan all sorts of fund raising. Soooo, please respond with any directions you can get us moving in. Happy New Year to all, more to come soon-
Peace

We had to postpone the previous party because you can't decompress if your burning man gear isn't at least partially put away. Decompression will now take place the day before the San Francisco Decompression Party. So Havana Room Decompression will be on Saturday, October 6 at Mona & Eric's place. So bring your swim suit and prepare for fun.

Mona and Eric are in San Rafael and I'm not leaving out there address, I just don't know what it is, so details will follow.

our container has made it back from the playa, last one out! it made it to american steel tuesday at noon. sooooo it's time to empty that thing of garbage and recycling, and sort out tools and supplies that need to go back to their respective homes. havana room materials itself (that survived) will be kept in the container. we still need to figure out where the container will sit for the year, and what funds will pay for storage fees.
THIS WEEKEND we'll be working at american steel. perhaps just a half day on saturday- dump run and bicycle distribution (all trash and bikes are at the door side). ALL DAY on SUNDAY to get to the rear of the container for the recycling and subsequently sorting tools and supplies. so PLEASE if you are available this weekend, come down and help out. if we do it right, we should be able to inventory all the havana room materials and then keep the doors shut for a while while we plan the next steps.

From everyone that built, helped run camp behind the scenes, and running the club itself, I give out a whole hearted thanks. I'm overwhelmed by the effort that was put forth by the few, to entertain the many, and made a burn experience that will be memorable for all. It was a ton of effort, and we pulled it off successfully. Thank you so much.

Things to remember to bring to the playa

Paul has asked me to post reminding everyone to bring a couple of things:

Make sure you have a full tank of gas or as close as possible to a full tank, we'll need to syphen for the generators, plus its a good idea, since running out of gas on the way home truly sucks.

Please bring one of the green propane canisters, we'll need them to run stoves and the hot water heater.

Don't forget to bring your favorite beverages and perhaps some soda to add to the bar, since we anticipate serving a lot of cuba libres!

Moonlight and moonrise on the playa this year

The moon will be full about 1:00 a.m. Aug 28th. This means the playa will be lighted at night during construction dates with increasing light as opening night approaches. Hopefully the dust will allow much of the light through.

According to the US Naval Observatory, on the 28th the moon will rise about 15 minutes after sunset, always a beautiful sight.

On the 30th, wedding night, the moon will rise in Reno about 8:43 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time, and on the playa, a few minutes earlier (I think). Baron and Flicka, if you have affinities with the moon and heavenly bodies this may be worth considering in light of your ceremonial plans.

On the night of the Burn, moonrise is 9:44. By then it will have noticeably waned, but will still add significant light to the playa.

Below are sunset and moonrise times in PDT during the week for Reno. If I have the correct rationale, sunset should be a few minutes later and moonrise a few minutes earlier on the playa. To get a sense of the pattern run your eye vertically down the column for sunsets first, then down the column for moon rises. I will bring the tables with me. They also have sunrise and moon set times.

sunset moon-rise
Aug. 24 7:43 5:44
Aug. 25 7:41 6:24
Aug. 26 7:40 6:57
Aug. 27 7:39 7:26
Aug. 28 7:37 7:52
Aug. 29 7:35 8:17
Aug. 30 7:34 8:43
Aug. 31 7:32 9:11
Sept 01 7:31 9:44
Sept 02 7:29 10:23

Getting green means getting more aware of the natural world!

The schedule is up. As you can see, there are some holes to fill in the schedule (haha, put away your dirty minds.) I've left choice spots open for our house DJ's and house entertainment, so start posting your desired times so we can fill it up.

Green Man- what it is to you.
I feel we must act with this theme to green our lives, those around us, and really show the future through our endeavors today.
To that end, I have found a sponsor of a home size solar power setup for our camp. We need to see what we already have access to and augment it with everything else we need. Please post what types of renewable resources you will be bringing to camp, so that when i meet with a solar expert later this week, I can plan our system accordingly. I need to know exact details or else I will plan for average.
this will include the generators and other load dependent equipment. thanx, green thoughts- greener actions.

from my NYC crew...

UPDATE!
This just in from Heidi WD on the Playa:

"I'm ON the playa just right now, and daaaaaaamn, but it's dusty.
I've seen more dust today than I saw all last year.

And windy. Constant wind (seems like) with some hard blows, but nothing devastating so far. (but it's only my first day in the dust this year, so give it time.)
Ladies all have your rebar, right?

I'm serious gals, get your masks, goggles and rebar ready!"

As of now, we have no covering for the floor of the HR.
We were debating about tarps, sign material, etc.
It is now very appartent that we need something to keep the blowing "playa snow" from accumulating.
Anyone have a really big tarp, preferably not basic blue?
I will be at the salvage yard tomorrow on my way out of the bay, should I pick up something?
The prelim crew will be there on Thursday, we should be preped for the extreme conditions,
but the room itself will need some playa snow preventative. Peace

Before going to rent a trailer from UR or somewhere thought I'd check in with folks here to see if anyone knows of or has a trailer that could be rented or borrowed to get our art mule vehicle (this year styled in the fashion of u r a star Cuban flag). The Mule is ab 10’ long and 5”wide.

I have some "buckets" of tropical rum drink mixers..

there were meant to have the powder (baiscally sugar and some flavorings) a concentrated liquid of flavor and color, such as blue for a Hawaiann.

I have about 9 of these tubs, but I think if you add ice and half the contents, and a bottle of rum, it makes an ok drink...

I'm bringing them out for you all, and some rum to go with it too..
Bars on the Playa - Must read for all bartenders!

Dear Bars on the Playa,

In the past we have been informed that local law enforcement would
like to see us address the potential issue of under age drinking at
our event. Though we, the organization, are not offering alcohol to
anyone and are not responsible for your bars, there are possible
consequences for you and us if we did not address this concern. So,
I am sending out this letter to make sure you are fully informed.

We do not believe that there are any rampant problems with underage
drinking at our event that would merit investigation. Consequently,
we expect that law enforcement will act the same this year as they
have in the past. However, you should be aware of Nevada laws on
under age drinking. Here are some useful facts:

- It is a misdemeanor to serve alcoholic beverages to anyone under 21
years old in Nevada. The law still applies if the alcohol is gifted
as opposed to sold. Theme camps are considered public space and
subject to enforcement of this law. (NRS 202.055) In 2001 the Nevada
State Supreme Court limited the application of NRS 202.055 to only
servers who had actual or constructive knowledge that the person
seeking the alcohol was under 21. This means that you must card
someone who looks underage. Conversely, if someone looks of age you
are not required to card him or her.

- It is a misdemeanor for a minor to consume or possess an alcoholic
beverage in a public space (e.g., theme camps, open playa, center
camp, etc. (NRS 202.020)

- It is a misdemeanor to a minor to pass him or herself off as being
of age. (NRS 202.040)

- Misdemeanors carry the following penalties: Up to 6 months in
county jail, and/or a fine up to $1,000. Alternatively, community
service may be sentenced in lieu of, or in conjunction with jail time
and fines. (NRS 176.087)

- If a minor loiters in a place where alcoholic beverages are
consumed (besides a food establishment) then the minor could receive
a fine up to $500. (NRS 202.030) Also, if the person in charge of
the "tavern" allows the minor to loiter then he or she could be fined
up to $500 also. (NRS 202.060)

- Enforcement of the laws is either done by carding the person
outright, or through undercover sting operations.
None of this is new and not terribly different from most other state
laws. It could be worse in other states! No need for alarm. This
letter is merely for information.

Our recommendations -

1. Use good common sense when serving alcohol.
2. Understand your prerogative to serve someone and carefully
consider your options with people who look less than 21.
3. Have an extra person from your camp present while serving alcohol
to act as a witnesses, just in case.
4. Don't get minors drunk. That just isn't cool.

It is worth noting that federal and local law enforcement priorities
differ on this issue. If you find yourself in an unfortunate
encounter please get a badge number and note what agency you are
dealing with. It might come in handy.

Thanks for your time,

Harley

"I might want to have a Safe meeting place where all players (all ages) can go. The meeting place would be completely off limits to killing, so don't worry about undue disruption. But it might lead to a little more traffic. I envision it as a mercenary bar, where the killers go to get new assignments and boast of recent kills over a nice Rum drink. All in good fun. "

Finnegan asked me if he could use The Havana Room as a Safe Haven, and it seems like a good idea, to add some more flavor to The Havana Room. Not that we need it, but as my family in New Mexico always says, "It needs to be hotter!"

So, now we have the secret agent/assassination vibe to The Havana Room.

We are in need of stage lighting. I have a 30 amp able light controller, obviously NC.
Soooo, we'll be in need of lights that can be dimmed, rapidly turned on and off, and that
draw few watts. Can everyone post what sort of lights they can bring. Spotlights and
those with hoods are best. Please look around your house, online, or just bring what you
find on the road. We need as many colored bulbs, fixtures, etc as we can get our hands on.
thanx-lights will make the entire decor come to life.

Just a note that Cindy and I are gonna spec out some potential bamboo for the Havana Room on Tuesday,
harvested from a spot in Oakland, near the Zoo. If it's all good, we'll be bringing about 20 lengths back to
the lot. That should give us a few extra lengths just in case.

Evaporative cooling

Looking for more evaporative coolers. I have one that I will be bringing, looks like it will be best served in the Dj booth. they provide cool air, moist air, with very little power consumption. Since water will not be an issue, this appears to be our best option. If anyone has a very compact and efficient AC unit, that would be considered, but it would have to be less than 8 amps- not really very much cooling from that. sooo, hope to find more evap. Also fans alone will help considerably, I have at least 4 that I am donating, but the more air movement the better. Peace

Well, things have certainly revved up a notch around here -- it's
that fun time of year! Placement was announced and we are busy
helping out those with special issues now. The Black Rock City map
has gone to press and we are in the final phases of getting all the
information you will need to know out to you. Some of us are on the
playa already, and some of us are packing - or thinking of packing.
Emails are flying back and forth and everyone's running around doing
a ka-zillion things at once. Woo Hoo! It is almost here!

Most of the Early-Arrival and Weekend-Arrival issues have been sorted
out. Thanks for your patience. The placement team will be leaving
soon, so if you have any questions for your placer regarding your
camp, please let us know now.

In our past Placement-Announcements, we've given you lots of information
about preparing for the playa. This one has things to do ON the playa.

___________________________________________

JOIN THE LAMPLIGHTERS

Come join the Lamplighters at 5:00 at their Center Camp workspace and
help light Black Rock City! Anyone can be a Lamplighter for a night.
Or more! It takes just a few short hours, during which you will be
greeted and praised by your fellow citizens for your efforts.
Participate in this time-honored tradition!

For more information, or if you'd like to sign up as a theme-camp,
please contact: lamplighters@burningman.com

___________________________________________

A NOTE FROM THE GREETERS

Looking for something playful, fun, energetic, wild, crazy and yes,
important to do at Burning Man? Why not greet?!?!? Help us welcome
everyone to our great city. Greeters still have open shifts that need
to be filled! Many theme-camps sign up as a group. Visit our
schedule at
<http://greeters.burningman.com/>http://greeters.burningman.com and
sign up now!

For any questions, please contact:
toplessdeb@burningman.com

___________________________________________

ICE AT 3:00 AND 9:00 PLAZAS

As mentioned in an earlier announcement, there's great news: ice will
now be available in the 3:00 and 9:00 plazas.

So you can now get your ice in three flavors:
A. Arctica, in center-camp.
B. Ice3 (ice-cubed), in the 3:00 plaza.
C. and Ice Nine, in the 9:00 plaza.

Hours:
Monday -- Sunday 9:00am -- 6:00pm
Labor Day Monday (Arctica only) 9:00pm -- NOON

___________________________________________

PLAZAS = ART + COMMUNITY

The plazas at 3:00, 4:30, 7:30 and 9:00 have grown into an important
part of our city -- and can be thought of more like public squares --
places where people gather, events are held, art is placed --
fostering a sense of community within Black Rock City.

This year we will have community bulletin-boards installed in each of
the 4 Plazas -- message boards where theme-camps can post notices
about events, happy hours, classes, movies, etc. in that area of the
city. Also can be used for lost + found, rides, items-needed, fashion
tips, whatever. It's yours!

We're also happy to have some cool public art placed in each of the
plazas, to enjoy and interact with:

3:00 plaza:
"Tall Grass" -- by Glen Easley
a 65 foot bamboo installation

4:30 plaza:
"Angel of the Apocalypse" Head -- by the Flaming Lotus Girls
hosting a community burn every night

7:30 plaza:
"The Horny Fireball" -- by Vamp Camp
hosting a community burn every night

9:00 plaza:
"Anesthesia" by Rob Buchholz
a 40 foot steel flower installation

If your camp is interested in adding some art to the plazas, talk to
your placer!

___________________________________________

BMIR 94.5 FM

BMIR 94.5 FM wants to publicize your artistic endeavors and
theme-camp shenanigans to the entire Black Rock City community. So
crank up that home studio, record those MP3 spots, and send them to
bmir@burningman.com to secure a spot in the station's rotation for
the week.

To ensure easy airplay accommodation, hit us with your noise by
Sunday, August 19. We'll be on-playa after that, and email
receptivity might be inconsistent -- so beyond the 19th you'll need
to email your spots AND drop by the station to hand-deliver them on
CD.

As usual, we can record you at our our studios from noon to 4:00pm
each day of the event -- but we encourage you to produce your own
pieces if possible, since on-site production tends to be of the down
and dusty variety.

___________________________________________

VOLUNTEER AT BURNING MAN!

Find your V-Spot!

Bored with your Camp Mates? Sick of pounding rebar? NO PROBLEM:
Simply stroll on over to Playa Info in Center Camp -- just inside,
you'll discover the V-Spot, where we help people find their "special
place" in Black Rock City.

No need to sign up in advance, just come on by The V-Spot within
Playa Info in Center Camp, open Monday to Sunday 10:00am -- 6:00pm

___________________________________________

BIKE REPAIRS

Like the last few years, there will not be a bike repair camp in
Center Camp, so come prepared. Bring a fully functional bike AND your
own tools AND repair-kits AND a mechanic to spare -- to help yourself
and others.

___________________________________________

NO LOCKSMITH SERVICES

Also, as in the past few years, there has been no locksmith services
available in Black Rock City. Please be mindful of this and prepare
your camp mates as well!

___________________________________________

LUNAR ECLIPSE

One last note: you'll be glad to hear that the Placement Team has
scheduled a Lunar Eclipse for your viewing pleasure.

Monday the 27th (actually the early morning of Tuesday, August 28th)

1:51am partial eclipse begins
2:52am total eclipse begins
4:22am total eclipse ends
5:24am partial eclipse ends

(all times Pacific Daylight Time)

http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/lunar.html

___________________________________________

More Soon! And then we're off!

Cheers!
3x8 - $328

3x6 - $251

The sign will be printed directly to Lexan, a very tough, flexible plastic, and then a laminate over the printing to protect it from the elements. I will supply the art, and then will bring it up to Oakland when it's done, where it can be mounted to a box and then lit from behind.

this weekend was great! we erected the structure in 5 hours (central support, all posts and cables). this does not include the tarps, platforms, furnishings and fabrics. but shit! it was awesome to put the skeleton up!
other things FINISHED: catwalk, ALL 5 staircases, both planks, all bar and poker tables shelves, shower! really really great everyone, thanks to all who came and made it happen. there was a great showing of peops!
remaining main items: pvc or steel supports for tarped chillout area. this needs a full day of work. thursday will be the day for this, and wrapping up all the loose ends: 3'x8' sign (all pieces cut but needs cross bracing), flag poles (anyone want to make awesome flags?), cut stripper pole (just cut pipe to correct length), add blocking to upper platform, dump run, sand and another coat of polyurethane on stages, cut holes in post bases for anchors, make rebar anchors (16" long with hook). not much to go! oh, and it'd be great to paint the staircases.
baron is working on the grey water fountain and the entire power/lighting/sound array. holy shit.
a reminder: all work needs to be done by august 21st, that's EIGHT days from now. we'll also need time to pack the container properly. by the way, have you contributed your camp fees??? the are only a few people who are thousands in, and we'd like to be reimbursed at some point with camp fees. it'd be great to pay your fees if you have intentions of being a part of havana room. check out the website www.havanaroom.org to pay!
much love to all, and i'm really happy to be a part of making this happen!

Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 11, Issue 18
August 12, 2007

Must...get...JRS...out....

You guys are prolific!!

There's a lot of news this week so we're sending it on the weekend -
there was some list burping at the end of the week (those on regional
lists might have noticed) so we wanted to make sure it was going to go
out without wreaking havoc. The geeks seem to have worked their magic,
so off we go.

We are going to try to do one or maybe even two more full JRS's before
the event. We get LOTS of mail this time of year and some emails will
take us a while to respond to. Post requests go missing and the cycle
usually takes more than a week to get into a JRS anyway...now is a time

to use ALL your resources and not just us, because we're one foot in
the
desert and communication is about to go bonkers.

Please also rely on the other means we have to share events, news, and
playa happenings:

Playa Calendar: keep adding and keep checking right up until you leave
for great BRC events from Monday to Monday!
http://playacal.burningman.com/day.php

Regional lists: fundraisers, work parties, last minute requests for
help, etc? Your local lists are the place:
http://regionals.burningman.com

ePlaya: Use the BBS to tell the world about your playa project and
invite them to participate, look for a stage on which to perform your
puppet show, to talk about bike repair, or ask others for their input
about your final days of preparation: http://eplaya.burningman.com

For now, couple random tips:

The JRS reminds you as you start to plan your drive that PASSING on the

small 2 lane highways that lead to Burning Man can be a highly
dangerous
activity, as can swerving or attempting to drive on the shoulders,
which
are very soft. Please drive with extreme caution and obey the speed
limits on your way to BRC. We always say this a few times on the way
in...and we're saying it now since we already know some of you are
hitting the road soon to make your way across the country or the
world...BE CAREFUL. Slow to a safe 25 (NOT 26, or 27, or 30 - you will
be ticketed!) where required in local townships. Get to BRC in one
piece!

Rich Labate also reminded us of this good tip: "I've been a burner
since
1998 (every year). It is a great idea to take a new air (filter) for
your car to replace the one full of playa dust as soon as you get off
the playa and can stop somewhere safe. It could add lots of miles to
your engine and probably lots of miles per gallon."

MORE GOOD TIPS? Some hot reminders for you - breaking it down to some
basics for newcomers and jaded old-timers alike! - are freshly posted
on the new "Timmmii's Tips" page, a guide to preparing for Burning Man
2007: http://burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/tips07.html

We invited longtime Burner Timmmii to come up with a few of the most
basic things we wish someone had pointed out to us one last time on the

way to our first Burning Man...we hope you all take a look at what he
came up with. He's also got a preparation blog for more:
http://burningman.com/preparation/blog/

There's SO MUCH MORE to say because there's so much going on...the
fence
went in on Friday (woo hoo!). We haven't heard whether they beat last
year's record, but beating last year's record time seems to be a habit
up there. Heard the crews are ready steady go right now, with tight
pre-playa teams getting 'er done already. Ladies and gentlemens, BRC
has
been spotted and it's taking shape! We're almost there! (Marnee is
blogging about the building of BRC at http://traces.burningman.com/ if
you'd like to hear more.)

It is not without a bit of a red face that I admit that mine was one of

the late reports that has held up the processing of our MAMMOTH
Afterburn report for 2006...with so many reports and so many incredible

changes around here this year we have just about broken ourselves in
half getting this one together. BUT having just spent two days helping
the web team to hammer at some more of the final pieces, little birds
are telling us you you will see it before we get to the event. Maybe
seeing how much work 2006 took and what we learned from it will give
you
some idea what we've been eagerly throwing ourselves into for 2007 and
help get you excited.

Another tip? How about this: "Bike Repair Camp"? What "Bike Repair
Camp"? Most of the time unless you run into a playa saint with
particular skills, you're going to have to fix your OWN bike if it
starts to have trouble. Bring at least a basic bike tool kit and an
extra tube.

OK now read.
ART BUZZ!

Every year we seem to get more art, and the art gets bigger! This year
is no exception, with several large-scale installations the likes of
which we've never seen on the playa before, as well as more registered
art than ever before.

Want to see what's going to be on the playa? We've compiled listings of

all the different types of art in our website.

To see the honorarium projects, go to
http://www.burningman.com/installations/07_art_fund.html .
Feel free to contact artists if you want to help out, and do check out
their websites!!

The theme art is listed here:

Our Green Man Pavilion features two kinds of art:

The Mangrove, with dozens of trees of all stripes:
http://www.burningman.com/installations/07_mangrove.html
Pavilion Art, with a green theme:

Also featured are Exhibits demonstrating sustatinable technology or
drawing attention to global ecological concerns....finalized at last,
the list is being coded as we speak and will be posted shortly in the
same section you see above.
Fasten your seatbelts! Get ready to see more art on the playa than ever

SPEAKING OF ART...so many huge incredible thanks to those who have made

donations of time, resource, and money (large and small!) to the
projects we posted the other day. Looks like things are well on their
way to getting back on track. We love this community for jumping in to
help co-create this year's ambitious Green Man art. Now if you're not
already going crazy with your own, go find a local project and help
-BAY AREA AND POINTS SOUTH: BAY BRIDGE CLOSED BOTH WAYS LABOR DAY
WEEKEND

Fine folks at several area agencies and public offices saw fit to let
us
know so we'd be sure to reach all of you who cross the Bay Bridge to
San
Francisco and points south on your way home from the playa.

When you leave the Playa for home, and start thinking about
readjustment, you may think to yourself, "I'll cross that bridge when I

come to it." For Burners heading toward the San Francisco-Oakland Bay
Bridge, that won't be possible!

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge will be closed in both directions
over Labor Day weekend, from 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 31, until 5:00
a.m. Tuesday, September 4.

Plan ahead and use alternate bridges: Golden Gate Bridge, Richmond-San
Rafael Bridge, San Mateo-Hayward Bridge, Dumbarton Bridge. Expect
congestion on these other Bay Area bridges.

BART will be running overnight service to select stations, and there
will also be expanded ferry service on select routes. For traffic
information and trip planning, call 511 within the Bay Area or visit
511.org.

The closure will allow crews to perform crucial seismic safety work on
a
section of the bridge east of the Yerba Buena Island Tunnel.

GO-PED STYLE VEHICLES AND BLACK ROCK CITY

Odwally has the mic:

"You may have noticed that go-ped type vehicles are allowed at Burning
Man and think, 'That is a great way to get around Black Rock City!' You

may want to think more on that. There are lot of thoughts and feelings
on this topic, so we thought we would address the issue.

Black Rock City is built as a pedestrian and bicycle oriented city. It
is densely crowded, and motorized vehicles can cause hazards and
difficulties for those traversing our terrain. By necessity, we limit
the number of motorized vehicles moving around. This is for reasons of
safety as well as to encourage interaction and immediacy within our
civic-minded community. This year especially, and as we evolve as an
event, we also encourage pedal and foot power as the ultimate Green
alternatives to any motor powered or manufactured conveyance. And hey,
exercise is good for you!

We have, thus far, allowed small, stand-up (no seat attached),
two-wheeled, low-powered, single passenger, go-ped type "scooters"
under
the driving rules of Black Rock City, even though they are motorized
and
unlicensed by DMV. These vehicles, however, are generally frowned upon
by the organization -- as well as the masses. They are one of the least

creative or aesthetically pleasing methods of transportation available
in Black Rock City. They have historically been allowed mostly because,

by a measure of mass, it is generally felt that they do not pose a
physical hazard much beyond that of a bicycle. However, they do create
a
number of other issues.

DON'T SPEED

The first issue is speed. These scooters ARE expected to observe the
same 5MPH speed limit as all other motorized vehicles for reasons of
safety. Too often this is ignored, creating a hazard and a nuisance. It

is much easier to go fast on a go-ped vehicle than it is on a bicycle,
and go-ped drivers frequently get carried away. Be mindful of your
speed
and its effect on others, not to mention the population as a whole.

NOISE

The second issue is noise. Many of these little petroleum-powered
laziness machines are basically two-stroke, non-muffled, "weed-eaters
with wheels." They are loud and annoying to others when they buzz by,
and especially to those trying to sleep. For this reason, the electric,

battery-powered versions are usually preferred over the gas-powered.

If you do have a gas-powered go-ped, *please* get one with a muffler or

add a muffler to the one you have. Also, do your best to decorate your
ride or mutate it to the point that you are actually adding to the
quality of visual experience out there instead of detracting from it.

In a tightly packed community with tens of thousands of people, we all
need to be individually responsible in how we behave, as it does impact

the whole, especially when some are engaging in behavior that can
negatively affect the whole community.

BRINGING THESE VEHICLES IN: AT THE GATE

The Gate crew will be helping out toward this goal as you enter Black
Rock City. Any vehicle differing from the description above, or that
appears to be more dangerous than the kind listed above, must either be

taken off site or handed off at the gate outside Black Rock City until
after the event. Once inside the city, the Rangers keep a close eye on
the movement of vehicles, and will work to protect all of us by
removing
any vehicle that violates either the written, implied, or common sense
rules of operating them.

Please take these thoughts into consideration when planning your trip
to
your city, your home for a week in the desert. We hope your freedom to
use these will be balanced with your consideration for your fellow
citizens and sense of responsibility. We're confident that you can be
more creative than just 'buying a scooter' anyway.
SNOW KOAN: COMMUNITY SOLAR CHARGING STATION

Matthew writes; "Snow Koan Solar Camp, (located on D near 7:30) will
have a solar powered charging station available for use.

The solar electric charging station is a place where community
members can recharge their electric vehicles, scooters, batteries and
small electronics. The point is to eliminate carbon footprints by
providing power from the sun and encouraging participants to use modes
of
transportation that are electric, which in conjunction with the solar
charging station, can be operated with zero emissions for the duration
of
the festival. At the charging station you will find 120 vac standard
'Edison' plugs like the ones in your house, as well as 12 vdc car power

ports.
BYO chargers for specific devices and batteries.

Participants will be able to charge day and night... however we would
love
to see daytime charging taking place because of the direct connection
to
the sun. Hopefully the community can take this experiment into their
everyday
world and realize that electric vehicles can be a viable and rewarding
way to get around.

HELP RECYCLE BLACK ROCK CITY INTO NEW HOMES FOR NEEDY FAMILIES

Last year Burners Without Borders organized the first ever playa-wide
lumber-recycling project, and it was a HUGE success! 42 units of
lumber,
filling SIX semi trucks and worth upwards of $50,000, were saved from
the burn pyre and delivered to Habitat For Humanity in Reno, the single

largest donation they've ever received. Then, in February, BWB
volunteers showed up on Super Bowl Sunday to help turn all that wood
into new homes for needy families. Talk about gifting!

Naturally, we're doing it again! We'll be accepting usable lumber
(full
2x4s, 4x4s, sheets of plywood and the like ) and hand tools at
recycling
stations on the playa, starting 8am Sunday morning, through Monday.
They'll be at 3, 6, and 9 on the Esplanade-just look for the "lumber
lifeguard" towers.

And we need your help. We need dozens of people to help direct
participants on where to drop their lumber and building supplies.
We'll
need help sorting and banding. We'll also need help with set-up and
clean up. If you'd like to get involved please send us an email and
we'll fill you in on the details: woodrecyclingvolunteers@gmail.com

Thanks for reading and we look forward to seeing you all in the desert!
LUNAR ECLIPSE IN BRC

2 cool astronomical events for you at Black Rock City this year. Bring

binoculars!

Full moon: Monday night- Tuesday morn August 28 at 2:35 a.m. So the
sky will be bright in Black Rock City, except for the therefore even
more spectacular...
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/phase/phase2001pst.html

Monday night- Tuesday, August 28, 2007:
TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE in Black Rock City. 1:51 am-5:24 am PDT, with 3:37

am = mid-eclipse. BRC just makes it into the 'All Eclipse Visible'
zone...
http://sunearthgsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/lunar.html
http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/LEmono/TLE2007Aug28/TLE2007Aug28.html
August's lunar eclipse is well-placed for North and South America as
well as the Pacific, eastern Asia and Australia. All of North America
will witness some portion of the eclipse, but western observers are
favored. The early umbral phases will be in progress at moonset for
observers in Maritime Canada. From the eastern USA, the Great Lakes
region and Ontario, the Moon sets in total eclipse. Only observers to
the west of the Rockies (including Alaska) will be treated to the
entire
event. All phases of the eclipse are also visible from islands of the
Pacific Ocean, New Zealand and eastern Australia.

Late Friday night-Early Sat morning Aug 31- Sep. 1:
Aurigids, a rare and spectacular meteor shower will be peaking at 4:36
a.m. in the east- north eastern skies. Visible from Nevada. It will
last about 1.5 hours. Best to watch between 4 and 5 am, with up to
160
Aurigids meteors per hour.
http://aurigids.seti.org/
This very rare shower will occur again on 1 September 2007. A brief
shower of tens of meteors will radiate from the constellation of
Auriga,
many as bright as the brighter stars in the sky. The Earth will be in
the thick of it during the one hour centered on 04:36 a.m. PDT. The
shower will be visible by the naked eye from locations in the western
United States.
Best viewing: Keep Moon out of field of view (best to block behind
obstruction such as telephone pole, then watch whole sky), avoid city
haze that scatters moonlight
Best direction: East and Northeast
Best time: Start one hour before peak, then see the rate of meteors
increase and decrease while Earth travels through the shower

INTERACTING WITH THE LAW AT BURNING MAN

Our Survival Guide reminds you that Burning Man's remoteness doesn't
give us a free pass to live outside the law. Burning Man supports all
local and federal laws, and expects you to uphold them during your time

in Black Rock City. There are representatives from five Law Enforcement
former head of the ACLU narrates.

http://tinyurl.com/2w7hjd

A brief sample:

"In the scene you just watched, Darrell and his friends waived their
rights repeatedly, without even knowing it."

It gives practical strategies for handling three typical situations (1)

if you're pulled over while driving; (2) if you're approached on the
street; (3) if you're at home -- (or, presumably, in your tent or RV).
Knowing your rights is smart no matter where you go.

We hope you have a safe and happy experience at the event.
STAKE PULLER SUGGESTION FROM ANOTHER BURNER

Gar writes: "I've had this stake puller
http://www.tolmantool.com/stake.htm for several years.
I bought mine at Amazon. It's been an awesome playa
friend. We were using concrete form stakes to hold
down the Costco carports at Gate Camp, and trying to
get those things out with vice-grips was back
breaking. With the stake puller, it's a 30 second job,
and no strain at all. And it does pull out rebar too.
It will bend the really thin stuff, but it will still
pull it out of the playa. "

Twin City Surplus (1675 E. 4th St., Reno,
http://www.twincitysurplus.com) is again allowing us to use their
need a ride to the playa during the week of the event, Twin City is the
place to go. Or if you're traveling to the playa and have extra room,
please swing by to pick up somebody who may be in need of a lift. It is

easy freeway access between the Wells Ave. and 4th Street exits on
I-80.
And who knows? You may make a new friend.
Remember, please don't call Twin City Surplus to inquire about rides.
They don't know anything about the ride share program other than it
