Aloha Dancers! Shakti Dance Movement is super duper excited to announce the return of Rachel Brice to Honolulu Feb.3rd-5th!!! Rachel will be teaching a 11 hour dance intensive and performing in a show, Sunday Feb 5th at The Venue. Workshops will be held at the beautiful Ballet Hawaii, space is limited! Suite 101 Honolulu, HI 96813 For more info on Ballet Hawaii check out their website: http://ballethawaii.org/ Weekend Intensive Schedule & workshop descriptions: Friday Feb. 3rd, 2:00-5pm: The Lovely Bones: Elegant posture and the biomechanics of belly dance. (3 hours) The 'bones' of fusion belly dance technique are posture, simple shapes, foot patterns and arm patterns. This workshop will strengthen those bones with a focus on clean articulation and proud carriage. We'll learn phrases built from these fundamentals to experience the power of posture, deepen your understanding of simple shapes, and drill the transitions between those shapes. This class is designed for all levels, from the experienced beginner to the professional, as the fundamentals are to clean technique as oxygen is to breathing. Please bring finger cymbals, snacks, a water bottle, a yoga mat, and a small towel. Saturday Feb. 4th, 3:30-6:30pm: Chop Chop! Screaming Combos and Double Time Drills. (3 hours) In this 3 hour class, we'll play with a few up-tempo combinations that Rachel's worked up in the last few months. The emphasis will be on precision, timing, and keeping posture while pushing beyond your perceived limits in a supportive and fun environment. Don't worry, only one year of belly dance experience required, but it should be a challenge for any level. All new material for your enjoyment. Please bring finger cymbals, snacks, a water bottle, a yoga mat, and a small towel. Martha Graham Dance Company at the Hawaii Theater, doors open @ 7:30pm As an added activity we are planning an outing to see the Martha Graham Dance Company’s performance at the historical Hawaii Theater. After class on Friday we will be grabbing a quick bite to eat, most likely in China Town and heading to the show. I will be purchasing tickets in bulk so we can receive the group rate, if you are interested in joining us, please let me know. Tickets are $50 with the group discount. (5 hours) The Stacking Method™ is a way to interlock the simple elements of belly dance to create complex movements. It was developed for the 8 Elements™ training to provide dancers with the ability to create an infinite number of movement combinations. Bring a sense of adventure and playfulness, as things start simply and build very quickly. A fun, mind-bending, high energy, and very challenging class for most participants. All levels are welcome, from the experienced beginner to the seasoned professional. For all classes please bring finger cymbals, snacks, a water bottle, a yoga mat, and a small towel. Rachel Brice bio: Rachel Brice first fell in love with Belly Dance after watching the famous Hahbi'Ru at the Northern California Renaissance Faire in 1988 and began taking classes right away. In 1999, she decided to study full time, and relocated for the University program in Dance Ethnology at San Francisco State University. In 2003 she was discovered by rock mogul Miles Copeland and began touring internationally with his company, Bellydance Superstars. Also in 2003 she founded The Indigo Belly Dance Company. In 2007 - 2010 The Indigo toured with its first full-length show, Le Serpent Rouge. When possible, Rachel studies Belly Dance with her teachers Carolena Nericcio, creator of American Tribal Style, and Yoga with Gary Kraftsow. When not teaching on the road, she lives in Portland Oregon where she opened a studio, Datura, while dreaming of a dog and a garden. Suite 2B, Honolulu, HI 96814 9:00am-1:00pm Musicality and Dancing effectively to electronic music Sink deeper into your performance by developing a greater understanding of the music medium you are working in. Learn how to hear the different layers in a complicated song, and how to interpret them effectively with dance. We will also be going over how to cut music to create a powerful dance set. In this class we will be breaking down a song into its individual tracks just like a music producer would, and dancing to those solo tracks. This is an advanced level workshop created for dancers who have professional belly dance backgrounds. Expect one on one training with personal attention given to each student. We will be dancing as well as discussing in this class. Bring a note pad please! -1:00-2:00pm BREAK- 2:00-5:00pm Intelligent drilling-fast and furious! Prepare to sweat while drilling locks pops and ticks and many styles of shimmies. Zoe uses her unique way of approaching movement and muscularity to offer the student very effective instruction. Efficiency of training and mindfulness during execution of movement will allow the student to learn how to practice better at home. And you will sweat! Saturday, January 29th, workshops held at The ArtZone 3245 Pali Hwy, Honolulu, HI 96817 9:00am-12:00pm Style and Grace Get to the root of your movements to unlock the softness and fluidity that is in all of us. By bringing awareness to all parts of the body while dancing, we will take the next step to truly connecting to pure movement and conveying it with subtlety while performing. The goal is to soften and polish that which you already have, and gain a deeper awareness while dancing. Expect to work on arms, pops, poses, belly-rolls, and plenty of hip work as we explore more intermediate concepts of Belly dance. -12:00-1:00pm BREAK- 1:00-4:00pm Layering with Shimmies Shimmies powered by the glutes, oblique shimmies, and chooches, 3/4 shimmies, but then add chest slides, hits, pops, figure eights, and belly-rolls. Your legs and your brain are gonna get a serious workout! Sunday, January 30th, workshops held at Honolulu Dance Studio 1030 Queen st. Suite 2B, Honolulu, HI 96814 10:00-1:00pm Drilling with layering All that we just learned will be mashed together with arms and layering, travelling and such. Most importantly, you will learn several different methods for layering, and ways to trick your brain. Getting into layering can feel like a huge step with a major learning curve, but this class will give you the tools to get started! -1:00-2:00pm BREAK- 2:00-5:00pm Levels and Angles Expand your dance vocabulary and explore a different way to approach movement! Just like the title says, we will be twisting, dropping, bending, and fully embracing all things diagonal. The additional challenge of layering while in these challenging positions makes this an intermediate to advanced workshop. Those with compromised knees or lower back troubles not advised.
