My friend Jaime and I will be visiting Hawaii from July 9th - 21st. We're starting in Honolulu, traveling down to the big island then back up to catch a flight out in Honolulu.

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to get together with other hoopers while visiting.

The new tape order just came in and I have both 1" and 3/4" tubing and connectors. You can make a hoop and decorate it yourself for the cost of materials which is $10!!!

OR bring your costume ideas/projects to work on. We have 2 sewing machines for your use and I will make myself available to help with your creations for REBIRTH. I can also give assistance/direction on design if you bring a picture of what you've got in mind.

Saturday Hooping

I was finally approved for one of the aerobics rooms on campus. I believe its 11:30-1:30, but I will confirm that and the room number tomorrow.

Unfortunatly I can not be there Satuday because I am Scuba diving. If you want to hoop or poi please bring your own equipment since I cant take any hoops over. If someone has a small stero feel free to take it with you to play some tunes.

So there were a few of you with concerns about hooping on thursdays, would you be interested in hooping Saturdays fro like 11-1 or 12-2? I can get the huge aerobics rooms on Saturday mornings but that was the only time they were available. It may be kind of sparatic, but I can attempt to book them for the rest of the semester on the days I am available if you guys are interested. I was thinking about booking them for an hour at least for my own use since they are mirrored and have really high ceilings. Let me know what you think

First Weekday Hoop Session

Hello all!

Ok, I am still working the kinks out of the whole weekday hoop thing, but even without being a registered group I think we should get started. This week my schedule is kind of funky so I was thinking of the following week:

Thursday Feb 22nd
6-8
Meet at the East West Center on the UH campus.

There is a parking lot next to my building. If you have hoops please bring them since I dont have that many. I know its kind of early, but as of now we are still stuck outside and I dont know if it will get to cold. So for those of you that work, come when you can.

Let me know if you are thinking of joining us so I can have an estimate in my head and figure out the best place to go.

If you need directions and such let me know and I can post them.

Weekday hooping

Ok, so I think I finally found out who to talk to on campus about using the Aerobics/dance rooms for hooping. I am going to try to remember to go tomorrow to find out if we can use them. They are large open rooms with wood floors and a long wall with mirrors. Unfortunatly they dont have aircon, but hey, no where is perfect right?

So is there anyone that would be interested in coming over to hoop on a week night if I can set this up? Mondays are out since I work other than that I do not think that I have any major week night obligations. I think parking is $3 but it may be free after 4:30p which I will also check into. So if you are interested let me know what days/times and I will get back to you with more info.

East-West Fest

Hi All,
I was with my hoop on the elevator and one of the building residents enquired about it and asked if I perform. I said not yet, but I have friends that do. He was wondering if anyone would be interested in performing at East-West Fest. I dont know that much about the festival, but I think its kind of a celebration of culture and they usually people perform dances and music from their home country.

I believe he said the event is April 7th, but I will have to confirm that. Since I have several weeks, I may be able to put together a simple routine if anyone would like to join me. They can not afford to pay performers, its more for fun and to share a piece of culture. So let me know if you are interested and I can get more information.

Winter break

Caught by security

So...as I said before I usually practice behind the conference center at the East West Center on campus since its next to my dorm. I also usually pracitice around 9:00p since its cooler, not a ton of people around and I have finished homework. Well tonight I didnt head down till later, about 10:30. I was trying wicked hard to be quiet and I obviously I know the oncall since we work together so I was not to concerned. Low and behold here come campus security. It took him a few minutes to figure out what the heck I was doing and he asked just to make sure. He was like "you need to go they dont like people hanging around here." I opted not to mention I was staff for the EWC, figured that could make things a little awkward. So I think I fi9nally may have made the campus beat for the school paper, I can see it now:

The funny thing any of the EXC staff that reads that is going to know it was me. What I want to know is who the heck called CS on me since I know they never make rounds at random. I also want to know where the heck they were when I had to send home 15 people skateboarding in the same spot at 1:00a one night when I was oncall. Seriously, never around when you need them! Its worth a good laugh though!

If anyone is looking for a place to hoop/person to hoop with I live on t UH campus at the East West Center and there is a huge lanai in back of the conference center where i like to practice. It is covered so I stay dry, since its manoa it rains daily this time of year. The grassy area near the coy pond is nice as well if it hasnt been raining. Hoop Happenings on the Playa

So here is the latest info on hoop happenings at BM this year...

Monday - noon til 4PM Harold will be hosting a regular to collapsible workshop, location TBA

Tuesday - (tentatively) noon til 4PM hoop build session at Kapilina

Wednesday - sunset hoop down @ EPlaya Bar w/ Xta

Thursday - Christabel and Kramer get hitched at sunrise, followed by a non-stop 24 hour party w/ of some of the best dj talent from SF and LA @ The Deep End including morning brunch w/ champagne & pancakes and a sunset hoop down

I know that last year there were a couple other camps that hosted hoop events including The Hookahdome, I just don't have the days/times yet. But you can be sure that I will post 'em as soon as I hear about 'em.

Just 52 days til playa time! I am so excited just thinking about it!!!

World Can't Wait-Hawai`i will have a contingent in the Gay Pride Parade this Saturday, June 24th. We invite all World Can't Wait and Not In Our Name supporters to join the contingent with its 8 bright green banners with each of the "your government" statements from the World Can't Wait Call (http://www.worldcantwait.net) and to pass out the Call to Drive Out the Bush Regime.

Especially in light of a recently uncovered Pentagon document classifying homosexuality as a mental disorder, to identify as a homosexual is increasingly becoming a crime in the United States. Under the Bush Regime and its Christian fundamentalist counterparts in power, discriminatory hiring practices regarding sexuality abound. Violent hate crimes committed against the LGBTQ community are constant. Hundreds of servicemen and women are discharged from the military each year under a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy.

Now, the Pentagon is breaking with widely accepted scientific thought and simply tolerance in general, by returning to the classification of homosexuality as a disorder or mental illness. The parade begins at Magic Island (Ala Moana Park) at 9 am and will go through Waikiki to Kapiolani Park. Just look for the green banners and NION flags. There will be buses from Kapiolani Park back to Ala Moana Park, where there will be an afternoon of entertainment, information booths and food at McCoy Pavilion throughout the afternoon. There will be little parking at Magic Island but you can usually find a space at Ala Moana Shopping Center.

HOOPING @ KOKUA - Sat 4/22

It's turned out that I don't have a ticket for the festival after all.
And at this point I am not really incllined to shell out a bunch of cash only to have to deal with amateur night inside the venue.
Instead I've decided to donate the $100 the scalpers are charging to The Kokua Foundation to support what Jack's trying to do for our kids here in Hawaii.
So... I thought I'd call a not-so-impromtu HOOP SESSION in the park outside the show.
I've been told that you can hear the music just as well behind the shell, only minus all the yuppies and tourists.

Anybody with me!?!!!!

I'm thinking I'll head down to Kapiolani Park at 2 or 3PM
and stay until the show lets out.
Look for the hoopers or else call me tomrrow
for a more specific location.

Bamboo Hoops

Hello Gang!

I was reading on the Hula Hoop tribe about alternatives to useing PVC tubing for hoops and they started talking about how traditionally Hoops were made of Bamboo. I was intrigued! In the thread they all started wondering where they could get bamboo from... well... WE in Hawaii are in such luck cause it's all over and cheap! I've been googling to try and get more information, but all I can find is history that mentions bamboo was used.

I want to make a bamboo hoop and would love to talk/brainstorm with others who have made hoops about how this could be done. If you interested in the thread I speak of - here is a link:

Hooping in Hawaiian

I was just thinking about Hawaiian words for the hoop, and checked with the Puke Wehewehe 'Ōlelo (http://wehewehe.org/gsdl2.5/cgi-bin/hdict). The most common word for hoop is "apo". "Apo hao" is an iron or barrel hoop, like those used on wooden barrels. If you want to keep things simple you could just say "apo". That's a native Hawaiian word and every Hawaiian speaker would know generally what it meant, at least in context. But it could also refer to a ring or bracelet or other hoop shaped object.

Another possibility is "apo ho'olewa". This comes from the verb "lewa" which has a variety of meanings, one of which is rotation or swaying of the hips in dancing. It has some other interesting meanings too, like floating as in clouds or stars (planets), dangling, swinging, oscillating, unstable, and some others. It also has connections to hammocks, stretchers, and a few other things. The "ho'o" prefix basically means "cause to do something", a causative prefix.

If you remember this then you can correct people who say "hula hoop", and explain that it has nothing to do with the hula in Hawaiian. Instead it's all about hip swinging and floating.

(Note: I am a linguist, but I don't speak Hawaiian. I also haven't checked with a native speaker for judgement on this. I'll do so soon.)
