Listen to bands employing hypnotic chord progressions, unusual melodies and ethereal textures that mark bands like Boards of Canada, Lamb, Portishead and Massive Attack. Music in which shifts in synthesized sonic texture and coloration do the work of imagistic lyrics, suggesting place, narrative, meaning. Music for the moments just before dark when there is only enough light to see silhouettes. It gets called "organic electronic music" or "folksy electronica" or, more frequently, "electronic pastoral." It is downtempo laid-back, mellow, slow-tempo electronic music that is sometimes called 'chillout' to encompass a wider variety of styles. Downtempo draws heavily on electronica, dub, hip hop, jazz, ambient, and is often fused with genres like lounge, trip hop, and folktronica. Music that is subtle, less intense but more rhythmic and melodic than current pop music. It's music for the mind as well as the hips. This is for the smaller moments.
