Does anyone have suggestions on how to break a sugar addiction? Maybe some herbal recipes to take away the cravings? I hear gymnema is good for making sweets taste bitter.

Tue, July 24, 2007 - 5:50 PMtry licorice root. it tastes sweet and helps balance blood sugar levels (if i remember that correctly).
for me, it took about 3 weeks for sweet cravings to go away. i was avoiding ALL sweeteners; not sure if that's what you're doing. -

Re: sugar addiction
Sat, July 28, 2007 - 10:09 AMgynemma works amazingly well, but it does make ALL sweets including fruit taste like nothing, almost doughy. L-glutamine works well too, and does not affect your taste.
what has really helped me has been eating enough fat, fiber, and protein at breakfast(at every meal really, but especially breakfast). This creates satiety, and cuts back on the desire for simple carbohydrates. Its as if I dont have enough room for all that sugar. I used to be a pretty hardcore sugar addict, when i was young I put sugar on frosted flakes..GASP :)
good luck and big peace shO:)!~ -

Mon, August 6, 2007 - 10:55 AMThanks everyone! These are definitly great suggestions and I'll be checking into every one of them. I started reading a book called "Lick the Sugar Habit" and it has some very interesting information on how sugar reacts in the body and how it can cause disastrous effects on the calcium-phosphorus ratio and other mineral imbalances. Pretty in-depth and enlightening stuff :) -

Fri, August 10, 2007 - 8:59 AMHi,
What I have heard is that when you get enough minerals, then you won't crave sugar so much.
So instead of eliminating sugar, try increasing your minerals intake.

Re: sugar addiction
Sun, August 12, 2007 - 8:22 PMSugar is a tough one. One of the best substitutes I know is an herb that is sweet called STEVIA. It is really good and they make one now that is less bitter. It can be bought at Whole Foods. Google it. On occasion I will use a sweetener called AGAVE NECTOR. Much better for the system than sugar. You can google that one too. Hope this helps. Peace and Light, Gabriela -

Sun, August 12, 2007 - 9:35 PMI use stevia, and like it...although it does leave a slight bitter aftertaste. I haven't tried agave yet, but have heard good things about it. Thanks for the suggestions.
