The Use of Mindfulness Therapies to Reduce the Pain of Fibromyalgia and Cancer
“I try to slow my breathing and think of the pain burning up and leaving my body.” This is what Jennifer Akers, a caseworker, writer and mother, does when fibromyalgia, a chronic illness characterised by widespread pain and fatigue usually in the muscles, tendons and ligaments, overwhelms her. Sometimes her physician’s painkillers are ineffective so she uses a less conventional weapon in her war against pain.

Medication and traditional medicine are often futile against the pain. Meditation and visualization mindfulness techniques are offering hope for the estimated 100 million Americans, mostly women, who suffer from fibromyalgia pain, fatigue and sleep disturbance.

A study conducted by the University of Wisconsin recruited 69 women with the chronic condition. They took a two-month course learning stress reduction and meditation techniques. All the women in the study reported significant reduction in pain symptoms, disability, and sleep disturbance.

This isn’t the only study to obtain these results. Seventy women took part in a study using stress reduction meditation by The Arthritis-Fibromyalgia Center, of Newton Wellesley Hospital in Massachusetts. Fifty-one percent showed moderate to marked improvements. In a similar study at the Center for Integrative Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, patients who took an eight-week course of thirty -minute meditation daily experienced a 44% reduction in anxiety.
  • Libra..I think part of the problem is the training our docs have

they are only trained..in medicine and testing

they do not know alternative methods...well most don't

so many of the times..I go to the docs and talk herbs and alternative treatments..

and they look at me dully.. and wait till I am done..and move on with their direction..

never do they offer ..ideas of vitamins..to take..or herbs to try..

    its drugs..all the time..

that is another great direction we need to change about our...HEALTHCARE!
    • This is a tough one, guys (& gals)... I think meditation, herbs, vitamins are good but some illnesses really need drugs. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia & I thought I had it for 10 years until I recently found out it was Lyme Disease. Meditation is good but it's not a replacement for competent medical knowledge. I believe fibromyalgia is a real illness which needs real, accurate diagnosis to get to the root of the problem. It's a complex issue...

I feel the alternative medical system can have it's share of hucksterism & snake oil, too. There are many complex illnesses now that need serious cures. I have found that it's good to be open to all modalities. How to get a system that will pay for them is another story. Healthcare is a human right not a privelege. It should not be tied to one's employment but to the fact that we are citizens. The way this country handles illness is a joke. The same is true for applying for disability. We really need a true reveloution - not just a movie. The problem is, is that the people in power just don't care. They have health care... Why should they care if the rest of the country doesn't. The whole system is corrupt from the politicians to the insurance companies, drug companies, doctors, etc. We are progressively losing our rights & freedoms. I don't see how things are going to change without people doing something drastic. What? I don't know...
