For the first time in my life, I seem to be having a serious problem in my knee. Two days ago I went to my weekly kathak lesson (classical Indian dance, involving a lot of foot stomping similar to flamenco, simpler but with bell chains weighing down your ankles...)
The next day I noticed an acute pain while walking somewhere in the upper right corner right behind my knee cap somewhere. It got worse when I descended any stairs, so much so that I had to support myself on the rail to take off the weight. Climbing stairs also hurt, and I discovered that the pain got less when I put more weight on muy right leg and leaned forward, shifting my weight forward while walking. I got a massage but it did not help. I went to bellydancing that night and noticed that my lower back was rather stiff and sore too. Shifting my pelvis side to side in a simple warm up exercise hurt the muscles in my lower back and on my sides.
That night it even hurt in the kneee while lying in bed, before I went to sleep. I wondered if I should put on some tiger balm or take some medicine of something but was too sleepy to get up and find some.
Today it was still there, same problem with the stairs, and I wondered whether I had now seriously worn down the cartilage in there, cracked something or whatever other serious damage.
But tonight the pain is gone again. I feel relieved but also I am worried. What is this? Does anyone have any experience with knee problems and what do I do when it comes back? Are there any exercises or something for that?

Re: knee pains?
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 8:17 AMIt is aalways scary when you hurt something.
NO ONE onthe internet can diagnose your knee.
DO NOT be fooled.
You did something and you caused soem pain in you rknee.
The pain is gone in 24 hours!
You have soem clear choices - see a health care person or not.
Talk to other dancers in the class -perhaps that foot stomping was way over the top an dothers experienced something similar.
Read extensively about knee injuries and about knee anatomy
there are ligaments and cartilage and fat pads and fluid and bones. All are connected and overdoing one action may hamper or strain or sprain ior inflame one thing or another.
There are many excellent anatomy books out which detail knee anatomy.

Re: knee pains?
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 11:51 PMI took yor advice and saw a sports doctor today. He gave me x-rays, found out that the cartilage behind ghe patella (knee cap) was worn down a bit and that I have a "free body" (a bit of broken off cartilage?) floating around in the back of my knee which probably broke off in the front somewhere but is not impinged...
He gave me a hyaluronic acid injection, and I also got some ultra sound treatment and some exercises from his therapists. He said that eventually I may get water in my knee if and when it gets worse. Oh no!
Does anyone have experience with this? How much improvement can I expect from that injection? Do I have to keep getting them?
I also went on a apple diet, figuring that shedding a couple of kilos might ease the pressure on the joints...Wish me luck. So far had about 3-4 apples yesterday and a steak and some fried camembert in the evening with a bit of salad and a few spoonfuls of rice, and today another 2 apples and one plate of caprese so far (breakfast and lunch)...The apples seem to fill my stomach, hope the weight will budge soon...

Re: knee pains?
Sat, October 31, 2009 - 12:19 PMGlad you saw a doctor. Knees are serious business. And unfortunately this kind of injury is more common than it should be. But as long as you take care of yourself now, you'll be able to prevent it from getting worse hopefully. Good luck and take care. -

Re: knee pains?
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 6:19 AMThanks, Aubre. Yeah, I am doing my best to prevent it from getting worse. But can it actually get better? I mean, can the cartilage heal or is this it? I also wonder what is going to happen with that "free body" floating around. I hope it is not gonna get impinged somewhere. Does it dissolve eventually?
How does this injury happen? Does the cartilage just start crumbling when you make a wrong move? Does this mean, I am putting myself at serious risk if I keep practising spins in Indian dance classes e.g.? Yeah, I guess, I will never attempt another Turkish drop again, but kathak without spins is not kathak... -

Re: knee pains?
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 9:33 AMIf you have torn your meniscus there is a chance that it will heal. But there is also the chance that it won't. I would ask your Ortho if the cartilage will heal on its own, or if intervention is recommended.
I do know that if you keep having the pain, or if it gets worse, you can go from just having to stay off of it, to having real problems.
Does your knee sound..."squishy" or like there is sand in the joint when you move?

Re: knee pains?
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 12:07 PMcartilage can heal but its very slow.
floating bodies do just that - float around.
it sounds liek you have little anatomy and body knowledge.
you need to start researching thi son your own.
Much of treatment is determined by how much doctors want your money.
Knee surgery makes lots of money.
Tellign a person to stay home and do a few exercises makes none.
Cartilage has a limited blood supply and treatment is often surgery.
you said earlier that you no longer had any pain.. that is important information
Get books and read about knees.
I was offered that shot as well and my doctor at the time said veyr different things about it. He did say however that the effects may last only 2-6 months and then you just come back in and get antother . At 150.00 per shot and the office call that's a bi t expensive when diet change and exercises and attitud eand general overall happiness change fixed it./ -

Re: knee pains?
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 8:06 AMMy shot cost 10 bucks of which I paid 3 or so, and he is prescribing exercises. This is not America.
You can get a whole root canal treatment here for 50$ or so out of your own pocket, here is public health insurance for you. ; )

Re: knee pains?
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 9:30 AMI have alot of experience with knee pain. I've dislocated both my kneecaps and just past my one year knee reconstruction date! (Yallah!) The cut the top of my tibia (?) and moved it over and now I have one bolt and two screws on the front of my knee.
That being said, here is what I learned from 6 months of rehab.
1. Know your limits! If you are feeling strain in your knee during class, stop, sit out and watch. You can still participate, but don't push yourself and further irritate your knee. It sucks knowing that there are things that knee problems limit you to...(I can't do most floor work and drops are out of the question)
2. Ice, Ice, Ice, ICE!!!! even after a year, if my knee gets a good workout, I park myself on the couch with ice on it. My husband found the most EXCELLENT ice bag while I was recouping. It looks like water filled bubble wrap. It freezes and then slides into a felt pouch with velcro to wrap around the leg. I think he found it at Walgreens or CVS.
3. Don't wait to get help. If you keep feeling pain, even if you know what is going on, go back to the doctor. Get it fixed. Even if the solution is that you have to limit yourself. It is better to take care of your knees now, than to have MAJOR issues when you are older.
Hope this helps. I knew all that therapy was good for something! LOL xoxo -

Re: knee pains?
Tue, November 3, 2009 - 8:11 AMThank you, Alison. Actually, I did not feel any strain on my knee during class except feeling rather tired lifting my feet with those bell chains on it during kathak class and keep doing the flamenco like footwork. Maybe that was it? Yes, I will be very careful, thankis for the warning.
And no, my knee is neither squishy (I do not have water in it yet, thank God) nor feeling like sand in the joint. There was just some gentle clicking when the doctor jiggled my knee cap, something I haqd never noticed before but I know it is a test for damage, right? -

This helps a great deal ~ -

Re: knee pains?
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 7:54 AMWhat is Green Envy??? I take chondroithin when it gets bad, and muliti-vitamins with minerals and Q10 and sometimes hyaluronic acid too. Though with that shot in my knee additional pills of it may be possibly making my skin itch, I tried that yesterday and I felt a little itichy that night. I read, the hyal. acid can give you skin rashes if you are very sensitive to it. I guess, one has to be careful not to overdose on that.
Yeah, I guess, that joint health stuff is always a good idea if you are not very young and dancing a lot still. -
