Mod, please feel free to delete if you like, but I think this might be useful.
I have this thing where I forget to eat when I am workshopping, and often find myself relying on gatorade to keep from passing out. Ick. So, I've found a recipe for homemade gatorade, so I don't have to turn my insides electric colors everytime I dance.
Recipe for 16 oz. Bottle
(I think though, in theory, I would double the recipe for a 16 oz bottle, wouldn't' you???)
1/2 c. juice
1/2 c. unchlorinated water
1 pinch of celtic salt or sea salt
1/4 - 1 tsp molasses
mix

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 10:25 AMA little off topic, but let's turn this into a discussion about hydration. Especially since it is summer, how is everyone staying hydrated while dancing? I know some dancers that prefer just plain water, others that like juice, and still others that have special concoctions they swear by. And you? -

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 12:12 PMElectrolyte enhanced water (Smart Water, Trader Joe's & Whole Foods have their own brands). Good stuff. Any if I'm really sweating, I eat a little something salty along with it.

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 12:19 PMI prefer water as cold as possible, and usually somethng salty/fibery/crunchy to go with it.
My local Smoothie King started carrying these Oskri bars – I think that's the brand name. They're very much like granola bars, but also very different. Mostly sesame seeds, with molasses or some other similar liquid, and that's really all there is to them. But they're so good, and they seem to hit the spot after class. (And they're vegan and organic.)

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Fri, July 11, 2008 - 8:10 AMI actually found this things called Clif Bloks, they're little jello versions of the Clif Shots and have a ton of electrolytes. They have one in a "margarita" flavor, which is basically lemon/lime and it has extra salt. A few cubes of those every hour and a goodly amount of water (I carry a 16 oz container all the time and actually bring a 64 oz to workshops) keeps me hydrated.

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 3:27 PMI bring (no joke) a small bottle of salt with me to workshops.
Why? I nearly passed out at a weeklong L-II workshop at Suhaila's studio... I didn't realize I was sweating so much that my body wasn't retaining the salts it needed to keep going. I had to have one of the instructors go out to get me little salt packets from the cafe next door. I should have known better. I sweat a LOT.
I recommend that if you sweat a lot, bring salty foods with you to workshops.... or just some salt on its own. Sea salt or kosher salt is my fave. -

Tue, July 8, 2008 - 3:31 PMOr, if you don't want the added sodium, these would probably do the trick - electrolyte tablets: www.safetycompany.com/product_info.php

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 4:23 PMI like a little fruit juice in the water- like the aguas frescas from Mexico- just about anything will work- strawberry & watermelon are my favorites when I have time to blend something, but fruit juice will work too (not orange-lol) and I add a bit of the 'light' salt which is a good source of potassium as well, so helps avoid cramping. -

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 4:24 PMoh, and I usually pack a couple emergen-c fizzy vitamin packs too- basically when my water bottle is empty from the fruit mix, I fill with water and add fizzy vitamin. throw in a couple Lara Bars (gee, why do I like those again?) and I'm good for the day!

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 4:26 PMThat reminds me of when I was in Air Force Basic Training at Lackland AFB, TX back in the stone age - 1974 (July) - the were pushing the salt tablets. They even had little dispensers mounted on the walls in the dorm and I think, the chow hall. Being a naieve young thing from Maine, the heat was quite a shock. I even passed out while in formation. Yeah, stay hydrated. I prefer water.

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 5:19 PMAsharah, I totally understand that. The first time I took a Suhaila weeklong I was craving chips (and I'm not a salt girl). I ended up buying a bag and eating the whole thing right there. I'm a sweaty girl too when I'm working.

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 4:35 PMi have a 32 oz. metal water bottle with a camel back lid from an old nalgine i had. (i got a metal one to avoid the bpa)
i love the lid because i am WAY too clumsy to not have something durable and spill prof. the best thing about it (other than that i can put it in my bag and not worry about it opening and ruining my phone and ipod) is that it's just the right size that two of those full is the right amount of water for me, which i usually forget to drink enough of. ^_^

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 5:53 PMmy trick to keep my blood sugar up.
1 liter bottle of water
1 single serve paclage of koolade or lemonade etc...
or
1 can club soda
ice
1 small can/bottle fruit juice
both makes a very dilute drink, pure water just gut bombs on me and I need some simple sugars
with chips (the only time I eat them) for the salt
Its what I have learned to do living in the southwest of the US for many years

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 11:16 PMCoconut water is suppose to be closer in pH to the body and so more easily absorbable, although don't quote me on that. Let me do some research. But I personally love coconut water. -

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Tue, July 8, 2008 - 11:57 PMthere are sugar free packets of gatorade like stuff called Replenish that I carry in my packs. I also carry snacks to keep blood sugar from dropping too low.

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Thu, July 24, 2008 - 1:38 PMCoconut water is my absolute favorite. When I used to do Bikram Yoga I LOVED how it got me feeling normal again after an absolutely grueling class, during which I'd lose pounds of sweat! EmergenC works well too, but if I'm feeling really drained it can sometimes make me feel nauseous. Coconut water is so mellow and refreshing at the same time. Sometimes I just can't take the fizziness of EmergenC.

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Fri, July 25, 2008 - 7:36 AMCoconut water is great. It is close to us in PH, and it was actually used for IV fluid since it's so pure. :) I learned that from Alton Brown ;)

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 2:26 PMI am hypoglycemic, so I don't rely on Gatorade or any other sports drink that has sugars or high fructose corn syrup. Instead, I looooove me some Emergen-C. They are little packets you mix with water, in a variety of fruit flavors. They sure help me when I'm feeling blah. -

Re: homemade "gatorade"
Wed, July 23, 2008 - 7:40 AManother plug for the Emergen-C vitamin drinks- they have a joint health version which has notably improved my knee problems too. Glucosamine & chondroitin in a nice yummy, fizzy, easy to digest form. Yeah!
