I've just discovered using wrist weights for my belly dance practice. I love the extra effect it has on my arm muscles - not only strengthening but also the extra awareness it gives me to my arm positions. I would love to try a weight belt around the hips! Has anyone tried it? What's your opinions about it?

Re: Dancing with weights
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 7:40 AMDelilah sells them.
She is in Seattle and very highly regarded.
I hoep to get one. I am quite sure this will increase capability with hip circles and likely thin one down if desired.

Re: Dancing with weights
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 9:34 AMthere are a lot of threads on how to make them yourself (for the hips) if you can't afford hers, too. -

Re: Dancing with weights
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 9:38 AMIf you strap enough cuff weights around your waist, it would do the same thing.

Re: Dancing with weights
Mon, October 26, 2009 - 8:06 AMwow yoga, im sorry, i just saw this! hahaha
a lot of them are just looping the velcro from ankle weights so that the 2 weights are connected. alternately but scuba weights or fishing weights into a strip of pockets. -

Re: Dancing with weights
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 12:59 PMI worry about the extra torque on the lumbar with these if the posture is even remotely off. But I do know dancers that swear by them.

Re: Dancing with weights
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 2:30 PMI got one and even with only a few weights in it, it was too much for me. Just wearing it for a bit and trying some hip lifts hurt my knees and my kneck (I had injured before). I didn't feel comfortable dancing in it as I was afraid I would cause damage. But I'm a weakling weights wise.... I don't lift weights at the gym either. Someon who is stronger would have better luck. But make sure you aren't over doing the weight on your joints... this could cause serious problems. -

Re: Dancing with weights
Sun, July 26, 2009 - 10:59 AMI agree, I had one and it didn't work for me. I felt a lot more pressure on my knees and I got rid of it. I do some free weights as part of my warm up, but I don't dance with weights. -

Re: Dancing with weights
Mon, July 27, 2009 - 5:39 PMultimately this is something that will only be a good idea for healthy bodies with no old injuries waiting for an opportunity to reappear. It's really hard on the joints all the way up and down your body. -

Re: Dancing with weights
Mon, July 27, 2009 - 7:59 PMI agree it's for healthy bodies. I got some and I have a collapsed disc b/w L5-S1...it was aggravated so I stop using them.

Re: Dancing with weights
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 8:20 AMAny positive experiences with them? I was considering trying them as well, but this thread is discouraging me. If they are so straining and can bring back old injuries, who's to say they wouldn't cause injury?
How much weight were you guys putting on? -

Re: Dancing with weights
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 3:27 PMI would honestly just use heavier hipscarves/coin belts.

Re: Dancing with weights
Sat, September 12, 2009 - 1:53 PMI have a Delilah weight belt and I love it! I only use it for isolations though, not traveling drills. I find that it really helps to isolate and strengthen the lower abs when drilling belly undulations down to up, hip boxes, and interior hip circles. It has also helped me with my standing glute isolations. When doing the glute work, I am focused on slow contractions, though not any fast work that might tweak the knees or hips. Bottom line for me in terms of avoiding injury with the weight belt is to not travel and to focus on slow, focused muscle contractions.

I love my Weight Belt
Tue, September 29, 2009 - 9:59 PMI absolutely Love my weight Belt.... I don't use it every day and have recently gotten back into using it... When I do use it a lot I feel like my hips are lower umm almost like it's lengthening my torso and I find my posture to be really good, my upper body feels lighter... I love it.. I got the medium which I think is 11 or 12 lbs... I would recommend for anyone who is makin their own to be sure the weight is evenly distrubted around your waist...

Re: Dancing with weights
Mon, October 26, 2009 - 5:56 AMI actually made one myself using the weights from a men's adjustable wrist weights and a fabric tie-belt with pockets. I love it! I would only recomend using it durring ISOLATION PRACTICE though, hip work and shimmies. It is bulky (any of them are) and can slide down. Don't wear it on your hips like a hip belt but just above the hip belt possition. it works your lower back, hips, glutes, theighs and pelvic floor.
