Class Update

topic posted Wed, October 17, 2007 - 8:24 PM by  Kadri
OK...with the way my lease is working out, I need to keep the studio open through November, which means one last 4 week session before hiatus.

As I sat down to figure out what I wanted to teach, I thought it might be fun to have you vote on which type of class you would like to have. So cast your vote and the most popular wins, as long as I know how to teach it and it doesn't get me arrested.

If it helps, the session will be held on Monday nights starting 11/5, running from 7:30 - 8:30 and will be $45 for the session.

So have at it, let me know what you want to learn, your wish is my command!

I'd love to see something like... a class on how to create choreography, or a class on how to build off a dance style. I'm probably going to be the only one to say I like the pop and lock stuff, but, we've had a lot of that the last year, and I'd like to see something different.

Or how about something really traditional -- base -- something people can really sink their teeth into and BUILD off of. It's going to be a bit of time before HBE re-opens, and people are going to be kind of scattered, looking for other things to do, and other classes to take, so why not give them something they can really build off of during the "break" ?? I think that would be FANTASTIC!!

I'll be in the majority on this... and, well, that's ok. You asked, I opened up :)

I would LOVE to learn how to play zills better. With ATS...you need to know the zills and I never practice enough on my own. Those FCBD girls are constantly playng them while dancing.Getting to know how to play them while moving would be awesome. Definatly something to build from. I sure know my body ain't a pop and lock kinda body :) But being able to play zills would be fantastic......especially with lead and follow!!

I think a zils class would be excellent. I second that... and then some.

First of all, traditional FCBD ATS is done... with zils. Always. They go hand in hand... and FCBD ATS is not done, without zils.

Second of all, zils are not just an accessory -- they're an instrument that can be played along with many kinds of middle eastern rhythms. It would be great to go over a bunch of those rhythms, and incoperate zils into them. Diana and I did this in Milwaukee, and it was really useful. I'd love to do more of this. Dance isn't just about dance... it's about creating a textured art form, which involves music. Without music... how great would dance be?

We've had lots of "urban" type fusion bellydance classes at HBE, I think it would be nice to have something a little different and would come for sure, if there was.

HI Kadri, I know you mentioned you may do the class on Thurs, I thought it would work for me but I am having some conflicts, would Tues work? Sorry to be a PITA....... lol

actually i meant thursday, not friday. so choices are monday or thursday at this point.

also, the thought for this class is to incorporate both ideas. to be able to do combos with zils that use them to accent your pops and locks. this is something i worked with while dancing at the cafe, and it's kinda fun. the cool thing is that you can take this with zils or zil-less.

again....thoughts please! especially since it may start tomorrow!

So, it's going to be a pop n' lock/zils combo class then? For sure?

Hahahaha...in all honesty, my ass is too fat for pop and lock. Thank goodness for ATS! I can barely do a pop, let alone play zills with them. Have fun!

        :)

Yeah, I have to agree with Diana on this... I'm sorry, I am just not a pop n' lock kind of woman. It doesn't feel right on my body and it doesn't speak to me. So I'm going to have to pass on this one :(

But I hope you all have lots of fun, and enjoy the class. I'm sure it'll be great for everyone who takes it :)

Thanks Diana, but I believe Rafika teaches at the same time and day of the week. That is why I asked.
Unless she isn't teaching any more.
          Adios!

Hehe... I'm Leslie not Diana. Though after all this time, we are pretty much the same person, ya know?? :)

Rafiqua does have a class on Wed. nights at that time. Shirley is in there, too.

My lip gloss be poppin', but I'm not. Well, I'm not taking the pop and lock class. I'm getting a new kitchen floor!

Hey Kadri, remember when we were trying to teach ourselves that Habi Ru (yes I spelled it wrong so sue me) zills routine to that song that Jennie and I hate. Let's try to do it again but to the remix of that song! Do you still have that dvd/video or does Dekha have it?
