This bellydance workshop includes aerobic dance combinations and conditioning exercises to build strength and endurance, while hip, chest drills and belly work are used to develop technique. Bring a yoga mat and some water.

“Zafira Choreography”
Sunday. June 1, 2008 from 11am-1pm
Let Zafira share some of their secrets of choreography creation. This workshop works on stage presence, posture, working with other dancers, and shows how to make even a simple choreography dynamic. Also, We will work in pairs/small groups to learn a short choreography.

Very Important - all past and present HBE must read

Hey all, I have an announcement for everyone. I know I’ve been absent for a while and I apologize, but I’ve been doing some soul searching and have finally come to a decision.

I will soon be going on hiatus and Heartbeat will be closing its doors for a while. With the changes that have been going on in my life over the last couple of years, especially the amazing one that comes in the form of my beautiful little girl, I’ve realized a lot of things about how I need my life to be right now. I have been a teacher for so long and have loved every minute of it since every one of you have taught me more than you will know. But now I realize that, to be a good teacher, I have to return to being a student for a while. A student of dance and, most importantly, a student of life.

I want you all to know that in this downtime, I will be looking for a new location for Heartbeat. One that has a completely flat floor, one that is warm in the winter and cool in the summer and one that has better parking with no scary elevator. I want to bring the studio back in a better position, literally, and with a newly inspired teacher for you (that would be me).

As for right now, classes will continue on through the end of October and I will discuss finances with all current students personally.

Please understand that I love all of you and that it’s been tearing me apart to make this decision. I have given my life to teaching for the past 6 years and trying to provide an oasis for all of you for 4 of those years. It is now time for me to provide for my family and for my soul.

Be safe, everyone, so that you can all come to the grand opening of the new and improved Heartbeat!

Love and cyber hugs to my ladies and the cult of black! Thank you all for showing me what an amazing thing it means to be part of this great community of beautiful people!

Studio BYE-BYE blowout

Subject - Studio Bye Bye Blowout!

Hey ladies...I'm thinking of having one last workshop and get together at the studio
before it goes the way of the dodo. I was looking at doing a fun little workshop in
the afternoon of next Saturday 11/24 and then a get together that evening. You know,
drums, food, laughing...an all around good time.

The only hiccup in this plan is that I hear Zafira is hosting a show that same day
that some of you are planning on going to. Now I'm taking that into account and I'm
trying to change the day on my end, but that is the last Saturday I will have the
studio and am not available on Sunday.

So, what I would like is for you all to chime in and let me know if this is something
you would be interested in or are able to come to.

And if anyone needs money details, I will post those shortly. I can assure you that
the workshop will cost less than a manicure, a dinner for 2 at Arby's and WAY less
than the gas cost to get to Pittsburgh! (nudge, nudge!)

this is on the other thread too, but i figured i'd make things easier to find. please let me know if you are coming to the workshop so i can plan....thanks!

1) babies and sisters are allowed to come, along with friends and other relatives, it is a party after all!
2) drums are more than welcome
3) details for workshop:
saturday from 12- 1:30 will be a choreography featuring as many styles as I can possibly fit into one song!!! (it's a fun bellydance potluck!)
fee - please donate what you feel like or can afford, there's no set price on this one and no contributions to the human fund allowed in lieu of payment

4) evening get together will start around 7, feel free to bring some munchies, but please don't go overboard, i want you all to enjoy this too!!!

**also, during the day I will be selling off some of the studio pieces that I will not be able to store. I will have a list posted on friday as to what and how much. note - the mannequin is not for sale!!!

Class Update

OK...with the way my lease is working out, I need to keep the studio open through November, which means one last 4 week session before hiatus.

As I sat down to figure out what I wanted to teach, I thought it might be fun to have you vote on which type of class you would like to have. So cast your vote and the most popular wins, as long as I know how to teach it and it doesn't get me arrested.

If it helps, the session will be held on Monday nights starting 11/5, running from 7:30 - 8:30 and will be $45 for the session.

More news on the Man Child!

Little William (7 lbs, 8 ozs, 20 1/4 inches) was a reluctant tyke! Vicky was admitted to the hospital after her water broke on Tuesday evening. No progress. Pitosin was administered, a little progress, epidural given. No more progress. C-section was decided upon, good thing as the cord was wrapped THRICE around his neck!! It was a damn good thing she didn't push!! Every baby is a miracle, but this one was even more so! After a harrowing 3 days, mom and dad are quite tired. They are requesting quiet time for now. I will relay any well wishes if you have them!

ok, I am talking contract terms with all of the groups above for our yearly show...

things NEED to be different next year..we will be having a planning meeting for anyone who wants to be involved, there is NO way I can do this all by myself again, I was SO fortunate to have Kadri step in and MC for me during the show....

there will also be fewer spots for dancers since I am bringing in so many big names...
FIRST COME FIRST SERVE
the ABK also has the right to deny any act, they are asking to see each act prior to the show, so we will have a runthrough well ahead of time, think of it as your audition to be accepted by the gallery (not by me, I would love to have you ALL & do not believe in excluding anyone)
but, since this is THEIR venue, it is THEIR right, and I have no problem with it.
(although they LOVED everyone's pieces the past few years, so don't worry and don't let that hinder you from applying it's just a matter of what we are looking for in this show and making sure it all fits our header and our time constraints)

the show will be a dance fusion show..anything goes (except a request to exclude anything that is not family friendly such as burlesque)

the date the art gallery chose for our show is June 20th 2008, we only have TWO hours...
this years show NEEDS to flow better...

IF anyone is interested in volunteering, (please only volunteer if you truly can lend a hand, even for an hour folding programs...)I will need personal assistants/chauffers for all of our guests ...and more...

everyone MUST MUST MUST have their music in ON TIME so I can burn a continual CD like I do for all of my other shows...
NO MUSIC BY DEADLINE, NO DANCEY...

I have hired two part time personal assistants to help with the behind the scenes things..

soooo..please keep in mind that this show costs me money personally every year, but it truly is my pleasure and my contribution to the community,. I would LOVE to at least break even this year...
we'll be using a pro videographer, not a friend of a friend of a friend.....I will not be able to do the DVD for a mere $5... the small amount I get from the gallery to produce a show literally goes into PRODUCING the show..it takes at least a YEAR of hard work to prepare for...and help from the community I provide this for would be wonderful.especially since I cannot charge an admission fee..

Hey all!!!! A new sword class is starting up next week by popular demand. Here's the skinny!

What: Sword choreography class
4 week session leaves students with a short choreo
When: Monday 8/6.....8:30 - 9:30pm
How much: $45
Where: really you should know this by now!

**Since this is a choreo class, dropping in part way through is discouraged without prior approval**

Since this may be a popular class, I need to know who's interested ASAP so that I can plan!

Sword Class - Important!!!

Hey all! This is a question for anyone signing up for the sword class starting tomorrow.

I just found out that the mother of an old friend passed away and her showing coincides with the first class. I would really like to pay my respects, but it would mean that the very first class would have to be moved to Tuesday for this week. After that, all the other classes would be on Mondays as scheduled.

So my question is, can everyone who is interested come on Tuesday instead for this week?

Please respond ASAP and keep watching tribe to see if the class is moved.

Question for my HBE ladies..

Unfortunately my schedule at work has switched for a while to 12-8pm. This is obviously going to put a strain on classes for a while until my shift shifts again.

My question to you all is, if I had 1 afternoon class on Saturdays through August, would anyone come? Say for a fusion combo class?

Autumn's personal Northern Migration

This will probably get lost in all the festivities going on this week but...

I am moving to Michigan August 4th.

I will be back to visit often.

It is simply time for a change for me. My life, on many levels, here has been stagnating for several years.

My house is a constant financial drain (which my atterneys warned me about when I took it on but I wouldn't listen).

I am restricted to owning only 3 dogs, which as a musher, is devistating.

My job saps my energy so much that I have little time to work on my business.

I have met another musher and we will be moving in together into a place we picked out together. We will blend kennels and resourses. And he is my new boyfriend.

I will miss the studio and all of you so much - but I will be back as often as I can to visit and of course perform and for NoMi '08.

I never thought I would leave Buffalo. I have watched the Universe open and close so many doors right in front of my face and I have so often said 'oh well this and oh well that, and oh well next time'. When this door opened, I said the same things... but then I thought... how long must I wait? The voices inside me told me 'step through... it's your turn'. And so I did.

Buffalo will always be my hometown. And although this studio was not my first, it will always be my home studio.

Also, I'm selling a lot of shit really cheaply. I'm a walking yard sale - check in my car.

Hello all-
As you know, my computer is completely from the Stone age right now, so unfortunately I won't be online much.
Bad timing, because it's hafla time!

Mark your calendars, it's official....
the Erie Art Museum Hafla will be held Saturday August 11th.

This is the weekend before Celebrate Erie, so hopefully it will be a little less hectic this year, and more parking!

Anyone interested in performing, please let me know! All levels are welcome, if you want to make a debut, let's talk about it.

Want to help out? We're meeting after my Wednesday evening classes in the Annex, about 8pm, to plan and stuff.

I would like this year to be much more laid back on the decorating front, I'm tired of emptying my house and carting in tons of crap. I'm still planning on doing the Arabian Auction. If anyone would like to help with that or make up a basket,.....uh, yeah. Lemme know. I've got quite a few started (you know me).

So not much to report yet. Hopefully I will be able to get the computer situation under control before then so I can update everyone easier.

Sorry to go off onto such a non-dance topic -- but here's a bunch of Buffalo folks who might know a few things about Evangola Park.

We're thinking of camping there. Just tents, no RV for us. (Those cost more than our house.) Curious if any of you have camped there, can recommend sites or whatever input is appreciated.

Also in the mix is Lake Erie State Park.........but Evangola is preferred.

Furniture Donations

Hey Everyone : )

As some of you may know, Chimene, Soo, Val and I have 2 friends that just opened a Cafe on Delaware and Hamilton in Kenmore.
Yesterday was the grand opening, and they have done a beautiful job! What they need though, is furniture.
I am passing on a small table, myself, but if anyone has that little table or chair that they've been debating on either throwing in the trash or giving away, this would be the perfect home for it.

These 2 women have had more than their fair share of grief and hard times and I'm finding myself scrounging around for anything and everything I can give them in addition to the miscellaneous coffee cups and saucers that I already have.

Not to mention the coffee is actually really good!! Their mocha is fantastic.

Why we love Nola......

I was getting my hair done at Euphoria before teaching class last night (decked out in hipscarf and all), and as I was paying the woman behind the desk said she had just met a woman who said she makes costumes for bellydancers, and wondered if I knew a woman named Nola. I told her I did, and she went on to gush about how during this prom season her two daughters needed their dresses fixed last minute, and couldn't find anyone who could do it. Then she just happen to meet Nola and got to talking and Nola offered to fix the dresses for her. Not only did she fix the dresses, but did it quickly and didn't ask for anything in return..... All this for a complete stranger. THIS IS WHY WE LOVE YOU NOLA... Where DO you hide those wings?

New Fusion Choreography Class Session

What: Tribal Fusion Choreography
When: Friday 6/22 - 4 week session
Where: Heartbeat Studio

How Much: $45 (note: Since this is a session, payment for this session must be done individually and can not be taken from existing class card payments you may have.)

Description: Over the course of the 4 weeks, you will learn a FULL choreography with a base in ATS and Tribal Fusion movements. This choreography will feature some Pop & Lock sections along with snakiness and, of course, turns! Notes on the choreography will be provided to all class participants.

a simple thank you....

I know this is overdue, I have been dreadfully ill with the flu since Saturday, on top of carrying this parasite species Aleksandr Z within me! lol~ but I am up (a little bit) now...had to take the entire week off of work to recuperate since Dr. put me on total bedrest until bleeding stops. *bleh*

but..it's nice just relaxing for once...it has given me a chance to work on our biz plans for the dance supply discount outlet I am opening in two weeks!

The studio will be officially closing 7/6 to move to a larger(functioning) space! a reflexology clinic will be taking the spot....but I am trying to talk her out of it with all of the electrical/plumbing problems that do not get resolved... it just isn't right to be paying the electric bill for the tenants that live in the apartments above me AND the pumps for the heat system of the entire bldg... but...as I always say..on to bigger and better things! just another hurdle that we got through...

on that happy note..
words cannot express all the gratitude I feel for everyone working together and dedicating their time, HARD work and efforts to our show & community events! despite criticism..I just want to say that you all danced BEAUTIFULLY! and I do want to express my apologies to those dancers who had their music mixed up by the art gallery employee.... and also that our blurb did not go into the program correctly, in fact, they used LAST year's show name, not what I had given them (Bellydance & Beyond-Breaching the Borders of Bellydance)(maybe it was too many B's...)

everyone dealt with the unavoidable problems at the time with good humor and patience...THANK YOU.

so again, my sincerest thanks and apologies for any confusions...I look forward to next year's recital

You all were wonderful last night...all of you :) It was so nice to see all of the hard work and learning coming out in your performances. Kadri...Una Hajara's performance was awesome! I loved seeing all those combos come together. I'm so glad I took that session :) I loved that Cat and Soo danced together and Shirley up there doing her thang! It was great dancing in the raks gothique piece, too.

I had a great time. And I'm glad I was able to spend a night with all of my dance sisters. We dance for ourselves and each other and it showed last night :)

Hafla fundraiser for Haven house 6/2 AND 6/9

I added another day since most of you are busy, good thing I cancelled the workshops for today!

DVD's will be available and as soon as I get caught up. I 'll post our pics! I had a photographer and a pro videographer, there are a few for each act!

DVD's are $5 each, I need a count ASAP if you want one....

btw- as my thanksm dinner is on me, either tonight or next saturda..

btw- this hafla will feature ANYONE in our wnybda community that wants to perform, whether it is fusion or traditional....
I refuse to leave anyone out of the circle...especially when they are thewir to support OUR organization!

I am having my fundraiser for Haven house at the studio (2531 Delaware ave) from 8-10pm..

HAVEN HOUSE/FJC FR info for Sat June 2nd and Sat June 9th....

I know the HB people performing Sat. can't make it, hopefully you can make next week's...

BUT if you happen to have any old cell phones (charger not necessary) Haven house turns them in, they get refurbished, erased, and given to victims of domestic violence so they can call 911, if you have a cricket phone (I believe they receive free service for a limited time) you may drop them off at the studioo today between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm or this eveing at the fundraiser,or call me to set up a drop off time, I'll be at the studio for a few nights this week doing some paperwork & prepping to start our kids program in the community organizations next week...

tonights fundraiser s $5 per person, it includes a FULL buffet of American, Middle Eastern and Eastern Indian foods... a few people have asked what they can bring.If you could please bring a bottle of soda...I have already taken care of the rest...anyone writing a check who wishes to make a monetary donation on top of their $5 fee, please make it out to either Kim Weber or the Family Justice Center.

we'll also have dancers performing, (anyone is welcome to perform. pls bring your m usic if I don't have it from last night...)

open dancing, basket raffle, etc, etc...
ALL proceeds go to benefit victims of domestic violence. HAVEN HOUSE is asking for Laundry cleaning supplies (soap, fabric softeners, non chlorine bleach) and old cell phones)
ANY ONE who DANCED in the show is in for FREE either tonight or next week.my personal thank you for being a part of the WNYBDA... we will also be taking a group photo of everyone next week...so please try to be there! (feel free to costume up, I am!)(btw- this is last years photo, we have QUADRUPLED in size! woo-hooeee!)

FCBD General Skills Certification - Sept/07 - Toronto, Canada

The general skills intensive is a 15 hour course, usually taken at the FCBD studio, with Carolena teaching. With only 20 people in Toronto, you will have Carolena and Megha teaching and coaching. You will receive instruction in anatomy as it applies to dance, music theory, instruction in all FCBD steps and concepts, drills, critique and question and answer time.

In order to attend this workshop, you MUST have prior ATS knowledge either via class, workshop or FCBD instructional dvds. This is a must - not an option. Usually a dvd or in-person assessment is required in order to qualify for registration, but this has been waived for this event. Do not disappoint Carolena or Megha - be well prepared with the material. All volumes of FCBD dvds can be purchased through Cleopatra's Bazaar or directly from FCBD.

Once completed, you will receive a General Skills for ATS certificate. It should be noted that completing this certification does not qualify one to be an authorized ATS teacher.

Also included in the registration are gourmet catered vegetarian lunches each day, water and juice for all participants.

Home Interiors Fundraiser for Northern Migration Belly Dance festival

If you are going to need costuming, sewing, or stitch and female dog time with Nola and I please tell us now.

We now have a permanent supplier for that fabulous cotton gauze that is so flowy for kaftan / 5 yard and hybrid skirts; available in an amazing array of colors . If you need a certain color beyong basics (OK, black and white) let us know.

Also I need to bargain with my kuchi "guy"; who is going to need coins or turkoman buttons for costumes. I need to start the bargaining process now.

Lori did great in surgery

We are excited to offer an innovative instructional format in which all members of the company work together seamlessly to give each student a unique experience of immersion in the foundation of today's tribal fusion.
The intensive will begin each day with Core Integration and move in to drills and combos, a choreography and some locking and waving to add a little flavor. The "Cabin Fever" Soundtrack Raffle Winner is...

It's SUCH a gorgeous spring day today, that I decided it was the right time to 'draw' for the soundtrack raffle winner!! I'm pretty sure everyone who wanted a soundtrack, has long since purchased theirs, yes yes? I hope so! If after this, people still want one, I can always get one to you. Just let me know. The ones purchased up till today, are all eligible for the 'mystery goody' raffle.

So, I put everyone's names on little slips of paper, folded em' up, dropped em' into my favorite floppy velvet hat, stirred em' around, put my hand in, and drew ...

It's official....I am the best Genre Defying Artist according to Artvoice's Best of Buffalo poll.

I want to thank everyone who voted for me. I never thought I would be nominated, let alone win, but I gotta tell you, it's really cool! I'm still in shock over this and I'm not sure exactly what to do with it but I do really appreciate the love and support you all showed me through all of this!

New Turkish Session Starting Soon

A new session focusing on Turkish Dance will be starting soon at the studio. This 8 week session will look at the different forms of Turkish dance found in the Bellydance community today, skirt work involved in Turkish dance and getting comfortable with the 9/8 rhythm that is commonly used for Turkish dancing. Students will also learn a short choreography by the end of the session. Details are as follows:

When: Thursday 4/26/07
8:15-9:15 pm
8 week session

Where: Heartbeat of the East Studio
1685 Elmwood Ave. Room 301

How Much: $75 for 8 week session

Dance level: This session is not recommended for beginner dancers, instead, you should have an Intermediate knowledge of Bellydance to take the class.

What to wear: Comfortable clothing is recommended along with a full skirt. Dance shoes are recommended if you like to use them for turns.

**NOTE: Turkish dancing can be very aerobic and involves a large amount of faster footwork and bouncing footwork and therefore may not be suitable for everyone. If you have knee or back injuries that are agrivated by this type of movement, please talk to your physician before attending class.

Turkish do-over

As you may know, the new Turkish class started last Thursday.

Well, a couple people have asked to join the class since they thought it started this week. Since I'm not sure if there is anyone else out there that had that happen to them too, I've decided to re-start the class.

So, if you missed last week and wanted to start up the class is this Thursday at 8:15 and will be $75 for the session of the next 8 weeks.

If you were there last week, we will be covering some of the same material but not all. So please come see what's new and enjoy last week as a free class.

Northern Migration

hey folks,

some of you have been asking how you can help out with northern migration. well, here's something you can do and it doesn't require too much time or effort but can really make a big impact!

as you might guess, it cost's a lot of money to bring in all those fabulous teachers, put them up for the weekend, pay for the festival site, etc... so to help defray some of those expenses, we're asking people to donate money for the cause. ask your friends, family, or whoever you think would be interested, if they would be willing to support our festival and be a patron of the arts. they can put a line or two in our festival program supporting their favorite bellydancer or buy an ad for their business.

Welcome home to me......

Im back from the Bahamas - what did I miss?? World peace? End of hunger? Keegan's college graduation? Raina and Keegan's debut with Bellydance Superstars???

Actually my body was physically back last week. My brain just came in today.

If anyone was looking for me or left me a message (Lori) I will be getting back to you ASAP now that I am back in the real world.

PS If I get my S(***)tuff together, Ill post photos of me entertaining on the cruise ship. I got the nerve to perform on stage..... I don't recommend shimmying on the high sees when the boat is rocking... I have video but heck if I have any idea how to do anything with THAT....
