So much we hear and read of tales of warriors in battle and it got me thinking, what were women's roles in old Norse society?
Women did play a very vital and important role; not only the daily life of household duties, but there duties to husbands and children. In my reading it is said that in those days a woman getting married was given the keys to the house. It symbolized that she was not only responsible for the running of the household but that its prosperity depended on her!
It would be interesting know what our Gods/Goddess' think today of woman in soceity. In a lot of ways, majority today <not all> still take on that vital role of keeping the household in good running order!
Rig, suggested this book many months ago, I took him up on it, purchased it, and really enjoyed it! Women in Old Norse Society By Jenny Jochens. My suggestion, put it on your book shelf.....it is a great read!
To our Heathen dads....have a wonderful day, it's your day today!

Re: Woman in Old Norse Society
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 7:15 AMAnother book you may enjoy is "Lady with the Mead cup" by Michael Enright. It is a look at women linked to the war band culture, and illustrates how important they were. It is very expensive though so you might want to get it on interlibrary loan. Another good one is "Wealtheow and the Valkyrie Tradition." -

Sun, June 15, 2008 - 11:41 AMyou might also find some good info in "The Far Traveler; Voyages of a Viking Woman" by Nancy Marie Brown.
The back of the book says: "Five hundred years before Columbus, a Viking woman named Gudrid sailed off the edge of the known world. She landed in the New World and lived there for three years, giving birth to a baby before sailing home. Drawing upon modern science and ancient sagas, The Far Traveler is the story of Gudrid and her world."
I read this book last year and really enjoyed it. There is a lot about everyday life in the book, both of men and womens lives.
The author is on a yahoo list that I am on, "Norsefolk 2" and has proven herself very knowledgeable time and again.
