Wouldn't it be wonderful if a Seiður Convention comprising of tradition based magical practices taken from around the late Iron Age in Northern Europe be organised and presented at one location on this side of the Atlantic pond right here in Britain? I am currently considering London England as a possible international venue for such a Seiður Convention but I am open to other suggestions. Also it would not be too great a leap for our European counterparts to put in a show. Those whom I have spoken to at the British end seem to agree that seiður needs taking forward a couple of clicks so that this art becomes better understood or at least explained a whole lot more than it currently is? I really have my work cut out for me in this, so if you believe in making dreams reality and that the improbable is possible, do drop me a line either on of offlist regarding this matter.

Re: Seiður Convention Wouldn't it be great if............?
Tue, January 27, 2009 - 7:26 AMHeill Rig,
I think this is a fantastic thing to do. Organizing such an event, is as you know, an organizational nightmare, but I do think in the end it would be very good for people who are interested in both the academic and practical aspects of Seiður to get together and discuss things.
I am curious what your 'timeline' is on this matter, or is their one as of yet (because that would give people a better idea of what they can contribute to the event as far as organizational support, etc....)

Tue, January 27, 2009 - 7:27 AMone other thing- england is a pretty decent location for this, as I see it, if it could occur in spring (flights from the US are less expensive in the early spring, say March or april.)

Tue, January 27, 2009 - 9:14 AMHeill Birka,
Thank you and I gather that you must have had some experience with the nightmare surrounding setting up "gigs" yourself and the frustrations thereafter the actual event of tidying up loose ends including all the finances involved ;-) Setting up such a venue is not a problem as far as I am concerned but getting the right material to do the presentations on *seiður, now we are in a different ball park. So initially I am attempting to draw out genuinely interested parties who are *willing to share outside your run of the mill "bootstrap seidr" contigent based in San Francisco and her clones. If sufficient interest from these tradition based parties come forward, then we are in the realms of getting this convention off the ground. I would be grateful for any support from all those interested be that word of mouth in promoting the venue or active involvement. My thanks to all in advance.
Yes England is a great country to host this and it would also extend to a busman's holiday for some ;-)
Best

Re: Seiður Convention Wouldn't it be great if............?
Sun, February 8, 2009 - 4:57 AMHeill the list,
Initially we thought that this would take around 12 months to put in place and execute but all things are possible if enough speakers come forward. At the moment, I am looking into the University area hoping to develop this to a recognised venue, from a working papers point of view (so no pressure lol). Here are my current thoughts on what areas I would like to see submitted as working papers and discussed:
1) Foretelling the future (divination) usually with a community impact
2) Bestowing good fortune (blessing)
3) Bestowing bad fortune (hexing)
4) Manipulating the weather
5) Attracting game animals or fish
In Landramabok (194) þuriðr sundafyllir (sound filler) employs seidr
to stock a fjord with fish. Seidr workers can also deprive an area of
its resources.
6) Healing the sick (this one is my favourite area)
7) Causing mild harm to people, animals or property
8) Communicating or mediating with the dead
9) Communicating or mediating with unseen worlds
10) Communicating or mediating with the gods?
11) War magic e.g. manipulating the minds of your enemies
12) Seidr Staffs....there are different types & possibly also
13) Sexual magic.....this area is definitely little understood or discussed
What I do not want is modern hybrids of oracular (hrafnar styled) bootstrap "platform/high chair" entertainment passed off loosely as
seidur/spae.

Thu, February 12, 2009 - 5:00 AMYesterday Linda Wormhoudt a practising vala in Holland who teaches and writes about seidur has agreed to be first speaker. Her subject is "Ancestors and Working with Dead". I am confident that others from Europe will soon follow.
