Re: Peculiar connection
Sun, September 16, 2007 - 6:27 AMThere is an interesting story behind this... Being Italian and Hungarian Gypsy, I know the history.
Santa Lucia was born to wealthy noble Christian parents in Syracuse Italy. When she was young, her father died when she was an infant and as she grew up, she dedicated herself to be a virgin of Christ. In her teen years, she turned away a marriage proposal from a pagan. When her mother became ill and hemmoraged, she took her to the tomb of St. Agatha to heal and when her mother healed, she vowed her viginity and bestowed to help the poor and misfortunate. Her pagan suitor though was irate at being turned down again and during the persecution of the Emperor Diocletian at its peak, the pagan suitor brought Lucia before the judge and accused her of being a christian (during pagan days as she is believed to have died in 304 AD). When Lucia refused to relinquish her faith, the judge sentenced her to a brothel. The guards however were unable to drag her there. When they attempted to burn her to death, she miraculously produced a sword and plunged it into her own throat and her martyrdom is said to begin December 13th, 304 AD.
Now, Santa Lucia's date of celebration during the Julian Calender was Dec. 13th, but the Gregorian Calender changed it to Dec. 21st, which is considered the first day of Yule. Her associating as the bringer of light is the connection of the lengthening days of winter and more sunlight.
In Venice, folks celebrate the Feast of Santa Lucia by enjoying fried cheese. Italians eat small cakes or biscotti shaped like eyes, light huge bonfires, and conduct evening candlelight processions, all in honor of Saint Lucy.
Sicilians pay tribute to a miracle performed by Santa Lucia during a famine in 1582. At that time, she brought a flotilla of grain-bearing ships to starving Sicily, whose citizens cooked and ate the wheat without taking time to grind it into flour. Thus, on St. Lucy's Day, Sicilians don't eat anything made with wheat flour, instead they eat cooked wheat called cuccia.
The tradition of planting wheat on Saint Lucy's Day (December 13) comes from Hungary, Croatia, and other European nations.
Lucia symbolizes light and growth for human and beast as she emerges out of the darkness. She is said to have been beheaded by the sword during the persecutions of Diocletian at Catania in Sicily. Her body was later brought to Constantinople and finally to Venice, where she is now resting in the church of Santa Lucia. Because her name means "light" she very early became the great patron saint for the "light of the body"--the eyes. Many of the ancient light and fire customs of the Yuletide became associated with her day. Thus we find "Lucy candles" lighted in the homes and "Lucy fires" burned in the outdoors. Before the Reformation Saint Lucy's Day was one of unusual celebration and festivity because, for the people of Sweden and Norway, she was the great "light saint" who turned the tides of their long winter and brought the light of the day to renewed victory.
During My research into this intriguing history, I have found that Santa Lucia and Hekate are listed under one and the same in the name for the Goddess in Italian reference. Both are honored on the Family Altar at the same time of year along with the Lares that protect the home and it's occupants. Both are considered the Light Bringers and givers of life...

So when did Hekate finally fell out of worship on a public scale? -

Re: Peculiar connection
Mon, February 11, 2008 - 9:39 PMIMHO, it was the Xtians and the Crusaders who managed to make that happen when they destroyed the temples and rebuilt churches sacriligiously over Pagan Holy ground and ley lines. During My journey this time around, I have to admit, I have met more Hekate worshippers as I grow older than I did when I was much younger just getting into this path when I was 16. So I am not sure that I can actually answer that specific question of when SHE fell out of worship on a public scale, unless someone else knows it... -

Re: Peculiar connection
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 9:06 AMYou really GOT to tell me more about the Gypsy tradition sometime. Do you have anything to do with Thessalian witchcraft?
About christianity.. I read that even the Lagina temple was converted to a church at some point.. There was active attempts trying to wipe things out in order to attain religious controll, that,s for sure. I believe that all christian deitys are put together from ancient god,s and godesses. It,s also well known facts that for example Asclepius was replaced by healing saints. Church built right ontop the temple.
I have heard about the ley lines too. It supose to have happened alot in great britain. Perhaps everywhere. Was watching a program ( or a few) about the stonehenge, awesbury stones and all that. The leylines are then traceble to churches in the region, actually creating a patchwork. Tought i cant verify it.
Hmm.. it,s not hard demonicing the curch :-P Lucky them that they got to edit their history, else i would probably puke :-P
About not meeting much other worshippers. It feels to me as if the world has got trought stages of awakening. It could offcourse be that pagan beliefs has grown in interest to replace the organized religions. Thus resulting in more people. But it seems like there has been stages of awakenings. The sort of strange paranormal calling so to speak ( please fill in words to describe what im talking about)
It seems to be louder and louder. Perhaps you recieved this very early. Then more and more people has joined up.

Wed, February 13, 2008 - 9:25 AMHenrik,
Would love to tell you more about the Gypsy tradition...and to answer your question, yes, I do have a few Thessalian and even Etruscan rituals in the Family Grimoire that was passed down to Me when I was initiated into the Stregheria Tradition, but that was on My paternal side. The Gypsy comes from the maternal side of the family. I have a feeling that this topic will become a whole other posting and conversation, eh?
Interestingly enough, I was raised Roman Catholic until I found My true path at 16. I have done extensive research into many paths and religions and have found that the Christians were very into astrology, astronomy and there is a long history of "black arts" within the Christian and Catholic past. They believed in ley lines and built many a stone structure over such areas just as the pagans built their henges and holy places of worship. Yes, a good portion of the Church's Saints and Honored figures were taken from ancient Gods and Goddesses, as were many of the holidays they commercialize and celebrate today as ways to convert, especially after the Crusades and Inquisitions.
Yes, there has been an awakening since the Age of Aquarius for there has been a shift of consciousness, though I do not ever think that it could replace the organized religions for there are too many people in fear of many things, caught up in the physcial and psychobabble mind control to truly unite for such a wonderous awakening where total peace and harmony could exist. Not enough believers in My opinion...for there is too great an inbalance due to chaos around the world.... I would love to see the day for that one event many religions talk about occurring but that will not happen, at least not in this lifetime. ;)

Deffinately :-P Hmm you have a family grimoire?? Cool :-) The Stregheria tradition seems very cloosed, would be interesting to hear your story about it. Im interested in all these subjects.
The christians and astrology, i think it,s funny with the fish bumper sticker saying, i heart jesus.. and then they go like, astrology is satanic!! LOL x-D Irony in action u know.. I was watching a documentary called zeitgeist recently. Basically one of those conspiracy theory movies.. but they brought up something really interesting on this. Look into it if you already havent. It sugests that the bible is full of astrological associations. It was even considered a science up untill.. ehh.. anyways.. and since the church was the authority before the schooolars they aught to have beeen big on it. In Europe there are several astrological clocks.. on churches.
www.chizzyandbryan.com/archiv...ock.jpg
As for the black arts.. all the original (medieval) manuscripts and such was likely boiled together by monks dabbling in all sort of stuff. Back in the days the church was probably sitting on an esoteric literature treasure. Tought there seems to be alot of misconceptions and pervertion to the original sources. Bal -zeboul, and even horus showing up as sigils later on.
Crusades - first one was in 1080 a.d. It is also in a period when the church grew increasingly intolerant.
** Though I do not ever think that it could replace the organized religions for there are too many people in fear of many things, caught up in the physcial and psychobabble mind control
I use to refere to them as weggies or jellyfish. I say give people a chance, and then ignore them. Let them swim around in ignorance ocean. Perhaps they get more lucky in some other incarnation.
** I would love to see the day for that one event many religions talk about occurring but that will not happen, at least not in this lifetime
Dont wanna be a pessimist but that would probably be after all the organized religious people has killed each other over.. who is the most holy and who said what. *grin* -

Re: Peculiar connection
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 2:08 PMStrega/o have a great deal to conceal, for traditions are passed down hereditarily as Raven Grimassi can vouch among others, but modern times have allowed certain figures to cash in on such even if in the act of trying to preserve traditions and keep them alive.
I do not mind letting people into Stregheria traditions for it is educational, yet there are still some things that are NOT shared....and will not be revealed to anyone not walking the same tradition. I can enlighten others as to the association between this tradition and Hekate...for I do have a very close relationship with My Patron in all HER aspects and forms. There are 3 different branches of Stregheria. All do work with Hekate/Diana/Selene... yet each branch has different rituals and celebrations as well as worship aspects....
When I was younger, as I said, I was raised Roman Catholic. During My years of study and research and learning, I came to realize that even in the homeland, many Italians who followed the customs and ways of life back then did so under the guise of Catholicism due to the control and greed and dominantion of what the church deemed heathen to prevent persecution.
True, Christians were astrologists and astronomers among alchemists, seers, mages and sages... but they had to put fear into society to be able to control somehow, right? But yes, it has always been considered a science and science is something many try to explain. In all actuality, it is about who is the richest and who has the most powerful control...
During My intense spiritual journey, I have come to know the illumination that walking with Hekate has honored and bestowed upon My entity...and the journey continues......

Re: Peculiar connection
Tue, February 12, 2008 - 9:16 AMI have a book at home (I'm at work now) all about the historical origins and worship of Hekate. It's been a while since I read it, but from what I remember, Hekate worship changed over time even in the ancient Greek world. I don't remember for sure, but off the top of my head I don't think there were any public festivals dedicated to her. There are few physical remains to judge for sure...such as sculpture. The evidence we do have of Hekate always point to her being honored in conjunction with Persephone and Demeter. And it wasn't until Classical times (after around 500 BCE) that she began to be perceived as a sorceress or witch.
(See Hesiod's "Metamorphoses")

Re: Peculiar connection
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 1:50 PMNamaste Kenneth,
In My research and investigation over the years, I have come across references that there were public festivals in history dedicated to Hekate. Hekatesia is said to have been a public celebration that lasted several days, to appease her and also as a harvest festival. The Greeks observed 2 days celebration to Hekate in August and in November.
In some traditions, January 31st was the night that Hekate handed her torch to Brigid whose arrival is celebrated at Imbolc.
There is a modern festival known as Hecate's Sickle Festival that is held from October 31 (where Samhain is also attributed to Hekate in celebration) to November 2nd that is hosted by The Aquarian Tabernacle Church (ATC) of Index, Washington.
I have run across reference dates of festivals to and for Hekate : (aside of the full moon esbats) Jan 8th, Jan 31st, April 8th and 9th, May 3rd, August 13th to the 16th, October 31st, Nov 16th and 30th as well as Dec 31st.
And yes, Hekate worship changed over time in the Ancient worlds for the Greeks and Romans were not the only cultures that followed The Goddess... -

Re: Peculiar connection
Fri, February 15, 2008 - 2:24 PMNamaste!
This is very cool. I'm not sure the book I have (which I thought a rather good one about Hekate) gives dates for public festivals. And I was actually poking around on the internet this morning to see if I could find out more. So, this is great Kitawna.
And yes, Hekate worship wasn't limited to Ancient Greece and Rome. If I remember correctly, scholars think she was Thracian originally.
I think I'll go to my book for a re-read this weekend.

Re: Peculiar connection
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 11:50 AMSome notes in short. Rome has a modern torch festival on august the 13,th or around the new moon. It is dedicated to Diana but also to Hekate. It,s an noumenia festival. Procession goes down the road - via Diana to lake Nemi. There suppose to be one in Greece too.. but nothing much on the internet. Havent found any really good links about it. Would have been fun to join up for some sort of event.
The 3 days of the dark moon is the days to do your altar stuff. Midnight is the set hour. Crossroads do too, but i keep them for the august celebration. I think the fullmoon is valid too. Anytime do. Midnight is a bit hard too keep so anywhen you feel in tune or feels an urge do. I try to go on the guts. Something worth looking into is the Lagina temple. It,s been a cult cite since the early bronze ages. It,s also known for something called the procession of the key. Read the links in the Lagina tread to find out more in details. This key procession is also known to have taken place at the eleusian mysteries. Hekate had an temple there aswell. Tought most of the images i get in my head dosent have to do as much with temples. My path ( crisscross path) is intuitive to nature. It,s a sort of witchcraft that dosent call for much for ritual tools. Pretty much similar to shamanism or voodoo.
I wouldent hang myself up too much about her origins. See some say she is a deity from Egypt, Heqet – believed to have been passed Down from the earlier numidians earlier. Others sugest she had her origin in Caria ( turkey, lagina e.t.c) There is also an teory that it has too do with an Persian mystery cult. Some say she is Thracian, perhaps she came as a deity with the horse nomads? Why else the connection to horses? No one knows. It could even be a merge. A bronze age main goddess. I tend to believe that the spirit of a goddess can manifest in many ways. Statues is just our way trying to depict something. Gifted by zeus she aquiered many gifts later aswell. It,s a real deity, so what dosent sugest she has gained skills trought time?
She is a complex nature and so is her myriad of ways.
Also note that she is a titan, allying herself fighting to protect zeus. A sort of wandering deity but with her nature and home in Hades.
Modern Hekate seems mostly to be depicted as the crone aspect, witchery thing. Loong story short.. she is of both heaven earth and sea. All societys has set their stamp on her from back then and forward. She helps in everything from childbirths to cursing.
The Lagina decorations is of an later date in antiquity. It,s all an puzzle. In a dream I had it was suggested that Hekate was turned into the virgin Mary by the Byzantine church. There is a lot to say, but don’t want to write an novel. Hekate worship is personal and very diverted.
Thus hard to depict fully. She also played a role as the middle platonic soul at the chaldean oracle –
www.amazon.com/Hekate-Sot.../1555404278
Many faces, many names. Many skills and then wieved by different people. It,s all confusing.
But always remember to listen to the heart, to the gut. Anyone willing to partake with anything of an esoteric quest and asking her to help will get more help then we can shake it at.
She can also help connect to other deitys.
Some of the dates listed at the back in this book.

Hi again Kitawna. Why is all the secrecy in Strega? Sounds a bit like free mansory.
*many Italians who followed the customs and ways of life back then did so under the guise of Catholicism
Sounds a bit like the tradition in Santeria.
Could you tell more about what you do in strega? Would it be possible to start a topic about it specifically?
Im new to the concept per see- but probably not to the idea since I read a lot about greek and roman witchcraft. My gut tells me strega - stregone is the real deal when it comes to witchcraft of the old school.
Christians are just like any other other group of opressors. May it be political or religious motives.. it,s still the same. They are simply a mob of blind and dangerous ( stupid) people and leaders. I refere to non arguable people as `` a program´´ pretty predictable.
Personally im all open with my beliefs on a social level. As long as i feel the person is receptive and will not make fun of me by beeing enlightened sceptics. Else i say that im interested in `` esoteric´´ matters. I do encounter ( once per week approximately) some Christian or another claiming that what i do is dangerous, it,s in league with the devil e.t.c ( who teatch them to say that all the time? )
*best way to reply is -
How do you know?
*The bible says so.
Where?
( aprox here they try to change subject since the don’t know for sure)
if not.. conter with.. that never happened to me this far, are u sure? :-/ or ohh..
did you see that in an Indiana jones movie?
Then it just to go like.. did you know that most of the saints are old pagan gods? ( they hate them) I find it interesting reading - and i have also noticed that all the rituals are pervertions of old pagan traditions and rituals.
The devil,s hows and why is also a fun thing to debate.
I also like to get my head into the debate about homosexuals.
All they really got to go on it is the 1,th Corinth letter. 6:9.. a cryptic sentence uttered by
Paulus in a letter! Not the word of god, but by Paulus. I then use to ask if it,s more important then the message of love in the bible? Apparently not.
If one wants to take a stubborn one out is to say.. ( since it,s all about guilt anyways) Nah.. it,s no point, we are all dead and in purgatory already. You are already a sinner and thrown into hell.. why else would you have to get to work everyday 6 in the morning? x-D
The best one ever is - did everyone before the bible got written end up in hell? Would there still be sins if mankind diddent know what sin was?
I also tend to believe that satan wrote the bible. To deceive people and bring them away from gods light. Makes sence atleast.
sorry.. carrying of topic. -

Re: Peculiar connection
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 1:45 PMThe secrecy was due to persecution. Aradia went into hiding as did her followers. Today the traditions (other than what Raven Grimassi has revealed) are still kept private from outsiders. In todays world, I don't blame the other sects for keeping private for once a secret tradition unfolds, it is bound to be poisoned and tradtiions will be changed because that is what society and those in power wish to do... to keep the sheep gathered.... LOL I so love the world.
Anyway would love reveal a lil bit more about Stregheria and the tradition I was taught and walk. But that will be another time and another posting . *grins wickedly* -

Re: Peculiar connection
Mon, February 25, 2008 - 2:11 PMSo it,s basically secret out of tradition? And too keep the tradition intact and unchanged these days? Im all ears because it feels ( gut feels) like a serious and very powerfull thing. Something i respect. Most things keept `` secret´´ is often bullshit. See it,s all about titles. Atleast the things i have mannaged to peak into a bit. Im a solo practitioner, thus highly individualistic and pretty prone not sticking 100% to the set - sort of practise. But if i ever would join up in something ( if at all possible) it would be stregheria. Because i would probably not have to personalise it at all. Will get the books aviable.
That or forming my own thing. Tought it would be a an Hekate cult exclusingly. But also heavily focused on creativity and liminal magick.
Would have been on the way if it wasent for the fact that there are so few people ( Sweden) that is actually into anything serious or intelligent per see. Those who are into something on a pagan level stick to the norse gods. I never found these speaking to me, eccept for Odin - ( Oden) and some of the runes. I believe the blood in my weins are not swedish per see. Thus, my family on fathers side arived here in the 1700,th century from Wallonie (Belgium)
