I am collecting signatures for a very worthy grassroots cause. Californians for Humane Farms is trying to get a proposition on next year's ballot that would require farms in the state to have cages big enough for the animals to stand, sit and turn around. That is all this measure calls for. It has already passed in Arizona and Florida and is law in Oregon too. Let me know if you would like to sign my petition to give voters a chance to change this cruel farm practice. We need 650,000 signatures by Feb. 22, so please consider volunteering to gather signatures. The Web site is: humanecalifornia.org/. And if you know of events/venues that would be good for collecting signatures send them my way.
Thanks,
Elinor

Puppy survived death by being locked in plastic bag now faces euthanasia. Can not repost the pics here. He is a cute brindle

RE: This puppy was left to die please give him a chance!!!
Liberty County, GA is located right outside of the gates of Fort Stewart and is approximately 45 minutes from Savannah.

Do not contact me to save this animal. I do not work for animal control and may not be able to reach them in time. I am a volunteer. Please call Animal Control IMMEDIATELY at 912-876-9191. If it is after hours, please leave a message stating which animal(s) you are calling about. They listen to messages before euthanasia. This animal could die as soon as Thursday. Please save if you can and repost if you can't!

case #805-1390

This puppy fought for life. Now he needs someone to fight for him.

An officer found this little brindle boy clawing his way out of a plastic bag. He could have suffocated and died, but he fought for his freedom, he struggled for the opportunity to live.

Yet his fight might be to no avail. He's no longer at risk of suffocation, but he is still at very high risk of death.

Now at Liberty County Animal Control, he could be euthanized as early as this coming Thursday unless someone steps in to save him.

He is 10 to 14 weeks old and was picked up at EB Cooper and Holmestown.

If you can save this animal, please contact:

Liberty County Animal Control
279 Briarwood Circle (off of Airport Rd.)
Hinesville, GA 31313

912-876-9191 (leave a detailed message and include the case #)

Please update me if you do, so that I know that these postings are working. Thank you!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note:
Although they share the same address and similar names, Liberty County Animal Control and Liberty County Humane Shelter are NOT the same entity!

Animal Control is run by the county and all animals are at high risk of euthanasia (regardless of age, breed or temperament) as they are only allowed a brief period of time to be claimed.

Also, Liberty County Animal Control is not an adoption facility. They are only able to release to licensed rescues. However, no one wants to see an animal die unnecessarily, so if you would like to adopt one of their animals, they are often able to set it up with a rescue. This teamwork spares lives :)

Some breeds (such as Pit Bulls) are adopted out more cautiously, and depending on the rescue the adoption is done through, there may even be a home check to be certain the animal will not be used for the atrocities of fighting (which is a problem in this area), breeding (all animals must be spayed or neutered - no exceptions), or other unacceptable purposes.

Before you ask:
Animals that find themselves at AC do not receive veterinary check-ups or care such as vaccinations. In most cases, very little is known about their history since most of them were picked up as strays.

Even their breed is often just a guess to fill in the blanks on paperwork or postings.

In most cases, we do not know if they are housetrained, good with other species of animals, or good with children or little old ladies. If I do know, I do my best to include it in their list

IN DIRE NEED OF NEW HOMES:
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/TheDogWoman/Northsittingpretty.jpgNAME: North
HEALTH STATUS: Excellent
PERSONALITY: Quiet & gentle
TURN ON’S: My kennel & running
TURN OFF”S: Fast reaching for my collar
HISTORY: I was found at a rest area on
I-65 northbound, hence my name. I was super skinny, full of wounds and parasites and terrified. Now I am neutered, heartworm negative, healthy and happy. My vaccines are up to date.
TRAINING: I love my kennel, walk nicely on a leash, sit, wait, have great house manners (I do not get on the furniture – ever) and I am housebroken.
OTHER: I am very good with other dogs, I like cats and children are fine too (as long as they are well mannered like I am). I do need a fenced in yard because I like to run a lot and far. I always come home, but it is too dangerous to let me roam. I really need my kennel, so that I feel safe and comfortable.
EXTRAS: I come with health records, my collar & leash, Advantage & Heartgard to keep me healthy. (Negotiable: kennel included)
DESCRIPTION: I am about a year and a half to 2 years old. I am certain I am part Black Labrador, but that is all I am certain of. I am thinking possibly Great Pyrenees. I am a big dog, but I don’t take up much room. I will let you know when strangers arrive, but I do not bark excessively.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/TheDogWoman/NobleNorth.jpg
AND
PERSONALITY: Very quiet and gentle, loves to snuggle
TURN ON'S: Snuggles
TURN OFF"S: Lack of attention
HISTORY: Showed up on doorstep one day. Was very skinny, had matted fur and a urinary tract infection. She is being fed regularly, the infection has been treated and she is a happy & healthy kitty
TRAINING: I use my litter box and play with my toys. I am learning the right places to scratch, like scratching posts. I am currently living with other cats and dogs and I am getting along fine.
OTHER: Up to date on shots and dewormed. Will be spayed before placement. I have a small adoption fee to help with the cost of my rescue.
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/TheDogWoman/P4090040.jpg
AND
http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a56/TheDogWoman/P4070038.jpgNAME: To be determined
AGE: approximately 7-8 weeks, we gave her DOB 2-14-07
HEALTH STATUS: Excellent
PERSONALITY: Typical kitten, playful and snuggly
TURN ON'S: Toy mice
OTHER: If I am not already spayed at placement, I will be spayed as soon as I am old enough. My shots are up to date and I have been dewormed. I have an adoption fee, to help with my rescue cost
TRAINING: I use my litter box, play with my toys and I am learning where to scratch my claws. I play nice with kids and warm up to other cats and want to play. I am staying with a bunch of dogs and they don’t really bother me much.

Houdini needs to be rescued!!!
The Rabbit Haven is once again asking for your help in rescuing a precious bunny on death row at a local shelter. He is such an effective escape artist that the shelter cannot place him in their special show cages, so the public cannot see him. Houdini is a very alert, smart and healthy bunny. He is also gorgeous, with beautiful facial markings. This cute fellow is stuck in a shelter cage right now facing death due to space concerns. He has a few days, not much more.

Houdini has already been neutered. He likes to come up to you and say hello and he likes to be pet on his forehead. The shelter cages are metal and make a loud sound when opened so the rabbits at the shelter are always frightened. He seems uncomfortable and wants out of his cage. A shelter advocate said "It took me a while to pick him up, so I used one of my own soft blankies to comfort and to hold him. As soon as I held him he was like a big baby. I believe he loved being held in a soft blanket." He has black and white wiskers with a black moustache just like his famous namesake. Houdini is an absolute joy, and he just wants to be able to go home.

Can you help save his life? His time at the shelter is growing short, he only has a few days left. If you can help him, please call us. Call Auntie Heather at 831 239-7119 if you think you can help.

Wonderful News: Albus SAVED!

March 15th

Adorable Albus, desperately needing rescue, was rescued by The Haven this evening just in time! He had been in a shelter for over six months, and was now facing euthanasia. His time at the shelter was almost done, he was living on borrowed time. The shelter notified us about his plight, and we immediately started looking for a way to get him out and safe. Haven volunteers notified rabbit people all around the world about Albus by posting on MySpace, Craig's List, LiveJournal, BinkyBunny, The Lagomorph Lounge and other bunny web sites. The messages of encouragement we received were much appreciated!

The Haven was finally able to get him out. He was transported by Connie on very short notice!. Thank you Connie!!!! Albus was surprised to see her, yet calm. He was very curious. He just kept looking around taking it all in. The car ride didn't even seem to bother him. We were all so paniced all day, worried as he sat there at the shelter all day still at risk! But, the shelter manager helped, and as soon as she could get there Connie whisked him away - to love and safety.

Then, like magic, his forever home was found - Blessings to Sweet David who loved him the minute he first looked at him. David read about Albus on Craig's List, and decided that he would offer Albus a permanent home as his very own companion bunny. He saved Albus! It was just meant to be. David also has lots of exotic birds and eventually Albus (after we neuter him) will be considering a companion of his own! Such great news!!!!! Even after suffering the loss of his Father In-Law yesterday, David was still able to find room in his heart for Albus.

Thank you everyone and especially David for providing Albus a loving, special home and to Stephanie for helping cover the expenses of his neuter. Thank you to everyone who offered Albus a home, some from as far away as Canada. Thanks to Connie for transporting and Erin, Valerie and Ray for posting for urgent help! Losing Albus was just NOT going to happen. Tonight I hear Albus is slowly exploring, and trundling about checking out his new space, loving his new dad. "Hey there is really good food here" he says! "What!!! No cold metal cage and no barking dogs? I think I am in bunny heaven! Ahhhhh and I get such good pets from my Dad. Oh this is just GREAT!!!!!"

Death Row Plea: SAVE ALBUS

Please help Albus
Albus has been sitting in a local shelter since August of last year, and now his time is almost up. He is on death row, and has very little time left until he is put down.

He was a happy, frolicy boy, but now he is just sad and so lonely. Does anyone have a nice big place for him with their family? He uses a litter box well and loves hay and toys! The Rabbit Haven will cover his neuter expenses if you can provide a loving home for him.

Please help save his life! He is in immediate danger at the shelter. Be compassionate, this Easter -do not buy a pet store bunny- instead, save a life.
Call Auntie Heather at 831 239-7119.

You can see photos of Albus on our Tribe Profile Page!

Exotics & fish need new home. Please cross post.

I have spent years in rescue and rehabilitation of pets, and I have some exotics that need to be rehomed. The rescuer needs rescuing :) I am losing my house and cannot take them with me.
I have 2 fish tanks.
#1 is a tiny tank, like a couple of gallons I think. I took them from some folks that had placed them on Craigslist because they couldn't care for them. One goldfish died within a couple of days. The other one is missing most of his tail, but seems to be doing alright.
#2 is a 29 gallon tank with 6 Gourami's, 2 Powder Blue, 2 Flame and 2 Yellow Tiger (I may have their names wrong, but it's still descriptive), 2 Loaches and 1 large Pleco. They do well together. They have made their way up here from New Orleans (they were Katrina rescues - as am I).
I have a bunch of "stuff" that goes with it as well as "stuff" for a larger tank (like filter & heater).
I also have a Rose Hair tarantula. She was rescued about 6 years ago in Oakland, California. She was left in an apartment with two snakes; a Green Anaconda and a False Water Cobra. I placed the snakes then, but kept the spider. She has been all over the place. She evacuated from Katrina, has moved all over the country and she is probably the best travelled tarantula there is. She is a healthy eater. She tends to shed about once every 1-2 years, depending upon the humidity.
Next are a pair of Emperor Scorpions. These guys came to me via a pet store. I was buying crickets for my spider and they asked me if I knew how to take care of them. They gave them to me right then. These guys are juveniles and currently housed together. As they mature, one will eat the other if they are not seperated. They are healthy eaters.
I do not handle any of these guys, they don't seem to like it. I have had spiders and such that don't mind being handled. These guys are not it. I can move them when it's time to clean out their cages or do whatever I need to do, but I personally keep it to a minimum.
The fish come complete with all their gear and some extras. The exotics come with their Critter Keepers and heat pads and whatever they live with.
I am not comfortable placing the scorpions or spider in a home where young children are expected to be primary caregivers. I am hoping they can become part of an exotic collection or a fancier. While these guys have venom, they are all relatively calm creatures that have been kept in captivity for a long time. They are hard pressed to bite, I have never been bitten. While I agree that these guys are "low maintenance" pets compared to some, they still require care and attention.

I am asking an adoption fee, based on the supplies that go with them (especially the fish). The fee is negotiable. I also want to weed out people that are not capable of properly caring for them. The fish will need to be picked up. I will not disrupt them until someone actually shows up to pick them up. I have transported them in 5 gallon buckets successfully. The spider and scorpions can be transported within a distance of Albertville. Thank you. I can send pictures upon request, this site does not allow pictures in it's text - which is really annoying.

need to find a home ASAP

The new apt. / share I was supposed to rent called me a few days before I was to move in and said she was renting the room to her 4th son. Out of the blue (no I really wasn’t expecting this) the couple taking care of Layla said I have to find a home for her by the end of the week (time changed) or she goes to the pound… The place I am currently staying will not allow dogs on the property let alone my place. I’m planning to take her and try to sneak her in and leave her in my car but she will be spending her in the car while I’m at work and in the car at night when we’re sleeping and this is just not a good situation for any dog let alone a German Shepard.

I have sent dozens of emails to dozens of potential roommates and apartments that would take both Layla and I. Before the couple volunteered to take Layla until I could find a home that allows large dogs, I tried countless times to find a new home for her but couldn’t because she is a large dog.

I still have 100 degree temperature and told I may be developing phenomena and all of this is now just too over whelming. So I am desperately looking for a new home for Layla and yes I will drive her to you if you live out of Los Angeles or even in a different state (within reason!) I would highly appreciate gas money though.

Gets along with cats
Only barks at the dog park
VERY loveable and very sweet
Is not aggresive
VERY kid friendly and safe - she loves kids
She is a beach dog but hates baths
She is still a puupy but a large puppy and is appx 2 years old
She has all her shots

My name is Lucy and I am looking for a forever family.

LUCY
Nickname: Loose Lucy
Health Status: Excellent
Personality: Typical feline
Turn On's: Food & 15 minute love sessions
Turn Off's: Dogs
History: When I was a kitten I used to live with some guy that wasn't very nice to me so my current guy rescued me. We lived just the two of us for a long time, the next 2 years. Then Katrina happened (we are from New Orleans). After the storm I have stayed all over the country, driven, flown and walked to various locales. While I enjoy being well travelled, I am ready to settle down. Unfortunately, my guy lives with his girl - and her 6 dogs and 2 cats. I try, but I just don't like them. I never learned how to be social with other animals when I was little. They have tried everything... pheramone therapy, drug therapy, behavioral therapy, slow integration, homeopathy (his girl does this animal stuff for a living). I am a great cat in a household without a herd of other animals. I have done alright with a cat here & there in my life, but would prefer to be the only cat.
Training: I am litterbox trained, I will use a cat scratcher if made available to me and I don't beg for food.

I am about 3-4 years old. I am a domestic shorthair with beautiful calico and tabby markings. I am super soft. I am up to date on all my vaccines, spayed and FeLV/FIV negative. I have a microchip so I can be identified if need be. I am a wondeful cat and really want to be a part of your family.

Please contact my humans if you are interested in me. I live in Northern Alabama and can be shipped under the right circumstances.

I AM NORTH

Nickname: Northy Northerson
Health Status: Excellent
Personality: Mellow guy, intelligent
Turn Ons: Running and head rubs
Turn offs: Fast movements towards me
History: I was found at a rest area on I-65 Northbound (hence my name). I was super skinny, full of wounds and frightened. I was taken to a shelter, readopted by my rescuer, neutered, heartworm checked and vaccinated. I had to go to a boarding facility because my rescuer is from New Orleans and had no place to keep me. They were great to me. My rescuer came and got me when she got a house nearby, made sure I had good manners and was healthy. Now, I am ready for my forever home.
Training: I love my kennel, sit, wait, walk nicely on a leash, I don't beg, get on the furniture and am housebroken. I love other animals, I live with 6 other dogs, 2 cats and all the neighborhood creatures.
Extras: I come with heartworm prevention, flea prevention, collar/lead and vaccination records.
Requirements: Large kennel for indoors so I feel comfortable, fenced yard, obedience classes so I know what is expected of me.

I am about 2 years old. I am a Black Lab mix, perhaps Great Pyrenees? I am about 75 pounds, I am a big dog, but I don't take up a lot of space. I have a short list of quirks that are easily remedied by attention and consistency. I like to run and run and run. I always come back, but I have trouble coming when I am called (we are working on this and I am doing GREAT!). This is where the fence and obedience training come in. I also like to play rough and wrestle. I am a big dog and don't realize I can hurt someone. As long as I am told nicely and consistently not to be rough I will oblige (I don't play that way with my rescuer, but I do if someone engages me). I am good with children, but would be a little too much for small kids that won't know how to keep me calm while playing.
I will let you know when someone comes to the house, but I do not bark excessively.
I do have an adoption fee, will need to have my home checked and some references confirmed.

Please email my rescuer on this site if you are interested. I am located in Northern Alabama.

Wonderful Catahoula seeking next lease on life.....

This is Lady. She is a Catahoula mix pulled out of a high kill shelter. She is up for adoption. She is the one on the forefront of the photo.
She is high energy and loves to play with other dogs.
She is spayed, UTD on vaccines, healthy & happy. She is about 1 year old. She is crate trained and has very good house manners. She learns fast and would fall into whatever routine her new home had. She caught on here in about a day. She does play rough so small dogs for her to play with would be on a case by case basis. She barks when she plays (as do all Catahoulas) so if you are looking for a quiet dog these guys are not it). LAdy is a wonderful dog that has been a joy to foster. She has required very little direction to get everything right.
Her rescue organization is: www.catahoulaunited.com/

If she is not up on it yet, just drop me a line if you are interested. If you want a Catahoula but not this one, drop me a line. I can help you find the right dog or puppy.

Catahoula's are not couch potato dogs. They are hunting and farm utility dogs. They will not do well in an apartment with an owner that is gone 8-12 hours a day. They require early socialization and training, as they are smarter than most people. They bark (also known as bay when they are hunting/working), are escape artists, dig, and are generally a pain in the ass if you expect to leave them in the yard. If on the other hand, you are involved in dog sports such as agility, competitive hunting trials, need a work dog or can expend the energy of a Catahoula in a positive fashion - they are amazing dogs.

Here's bit piece I found about the Catahoula for folks that are not familiar:

"What is a Catahoula?

The Catahoula Leopard Dog's roots date back over 400 years, to the period of Spanish Exploration of the New World, specifically the Gulf Coast and southern portions of the East Coast of the United States. On these expeditions the Spaniards were accompanied by "war dogs", believed to have been the Mastiff and Greyhound. These dogs would assist in hunting, guarding the camps, and battle. Some of these dogs were wounded or left behind and were captured by the Native Americans of the region. It is believed by historians that these dogs may have bred with the red wolf, a species native to that area. These wolf-like dogs became the companions and protectors of the Native Americans.

About a century later the French, during expeditions along the mouth of the Mississippi River, became intrigued with these strange-looking dogs with haunting light eyes. The French found that the wolf-like dogs had the ability to successfully hunt game in the swamp because of several characteristics including a keen sense of smell and webbed feet. The dogs could also easily retrieve cattle which had wandered into marshy areas. The French had brought with them their own dogs, known today as the Beauceron. The Beauceron dates back to the mid 1500's and was originally used to hunt wild boar. It is believed that in an attempt to create an even better hunter, protector, companion, and herder the French crossed the Beauceron with these wolf-like dogs. The Catahoula Leopard Dog is the descendant of that crossing.

A Catahoula is a loyal friend and protector, as well as being an incredibly versatile working dog. While not overtly aggressive, one would be unwise to enter their domain in the absence of their owner.

Catahoulas can be aggressive toward other dogs, and proper socialization is especially important when raising a pup in a multi-pet environment. They are very protective of their food, and a separate food bowl is suggested to alleviate potential conflict with other pets.

The Catahoula can be stubborn or hard-headed. A combination of love, praise, perseverance and a no-nonsense attitude is required when training a Catahoula. Given an inch these dogs will happily take a mile. The owner must assert his/her dominance from day one & continue to re-enforce that dominance when tested, or trouble will follow. While some will always argue an exception to the rule, the Catahoula is not a city dog. Unless allowed to run for a minimum of an hour per day (a walk on the leash or a romp in the park doesn't begin to suffice) they will find other outlets for their energy, including unwelcome and sometimes destructive behavior.

Their conformation is that of a rugged yet agile athlete. They are "headers" rather than "heelers". They gather or "bay-up" cattle and keep them bunched together so the cowboy can move the herd. They will prevent a cow from breaking away and circle the herd as theherd moves.

Catahoulas are also widely used today to hunt wild boar, and when you hear a Catahoula owner talk about them "working hogs" chances are they mean baying up wild boar, not herding domesticated pigs. Catahoulas also make a fine tree dog, being used on coon and The Catahoula Leopard Dog is an often overlooked yet excellent choice of breed for training in both Schutzhund and SAR. ACA director Don Abney, a reserve deputy, handler, and trainer of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's office SAR division, has just retired his Catahoula Ladyhawke after a long and very successful career as a fully accredited Sheriff's deputy. Don gave a SAR seminar for ACA in June of 1997 and a tracking seminar in May of '99."

Back to me: So, they come in just about any color, though most are familiar with the blue merle or leopard. They can be solid, brindle, white or any kind of combination. Deafness is common in white or mostly white dogs, just like Boxers and Dalmatians. These dogs are high maintenance and not for the lazy owner.

I am your host, Lady bug "the tongue" Sherman. Mommy and me are dedicated to doing what we can to help find homes for the vast numbers of homeless animals out there. We have been doing what we can to promote adopting from shelters vs. breeders or petstores. Locally we have been promoting Riverside Animal Services Shelter. They are a kill shelter that is usually very crowded. 4-5 dogs per kennel! They are under new management and they have been turning things around there and good things are on ther horizon... hopefully it will be seen to fruition. I will get more info on that later on as I update this tribe site.

I welcome any animal related discussion. Especially, rescue and adoption. Please, I hope we can keep the discussions focused on our furry friends!

Thanks for reading and joining up!
