Waikato University students are hoping a bit of plant power will give them the edge when they put their racing car to the test in Australia in December.

The students have turned to nature for building materials, making the body shell from hemp, a fibre that makes the car lighter and two and a half times stronger than if it were made of steel.

"In motorsport, there are a lot of collisions of course, and bodywork keeps fallling off. We'd like to use a more renewable resource that's more biodegradable," says team member Ben Houghey.

Next week the car will be put through its paces in Melbourne, competing against 30 other cars made by universities all over Australasia.

While using plants in car manufacturing may seem unusual now, it is likely to be the way of the future with increasing pressure on the industry to use environmentally friendly materials.
