menopausal anxiety

Greetings. all. I have had my first experience of menopausal anxiety...funny as I always listened when women would describe this and I now realize I did not fully understand, I did not understand the concept that it does not necessarily have an external cause..it is a hormonal response. Of course I knew this intellectually, but it is different to know something in your mind, than to know it in your cells.

So, I am not generally an anxous person, energetic yes, anxious no. So I was surprised by a gradual wave of anxiety that came over me yesterday. I was simply lying in bed, talking to my partner preparing to go to sleep...one of my favorite activities. I felt an anxiety that had no origin that I could pin point. The few times I have experienced anxiety in my life, there was a direct cause ie an exam, a big move or other stressor. I suspect the stressor here is hormonal. So I did fall asleep easily and I did not continue to feel this the next day, but I have this feeling it will be back. My first herbal thought was to have Motherwort nearby, in case it does not pass so easily in the future. I also thought I would increase my intake of oatstraw to daily. So I am sharing this 1. just to share and 2. to see if there are others who have experienced this common occurance in menopause and to see if you have wisdom to share. And even if you have not experienced this and have something to add that would be great as well.
Blessings

    Dear Linda,

Valerian is terribly good for helping with pmt and of course is a mood enhancer as I am sure you already know. Have you thought of taking this also?

    Blessings

Yes, motherwort is recommended for menopause. Dandelion root is also recommended for it. Kava is something nice to have on hand, though not continuously, as it's a bit potent. Read Susun Weed's book on menopause, which has excellent recommendations. I went through puberty at age 9 so all of this is coming at me at a much younger age. As well, there's the need to control the hormonal influx before it can adversely affect seizure patterns. I think I've got a good tempo down now... Your basic immune strengtheners are good bets too, as is Vitamin D3, which helps stabilize moods. Yoga and meditation are musts during menopause and something I'm glad to be doing regularly long before it made its face known to me.

That's very true. I believe nettle and dandelion work better when taken together.

Thanks for the input. Dandelion is suggested for menopausal women as it assits the liver in breaking down hormones more easily. The liver is working over time during menopause. I drink roasted dandelion almost everyday and eat the leaves during the warmer months when I can harvest them. But it seems like ingesting dandelion vinegar and/or tincture might be helpful. I drink nettle a fair amount, but could increase that as well. I personally do not find nettle and dandelion more effective when I ingest them together, although I do trust they are both nutrient dense and that they benefit my body in many ways.

I am grateful for the suggestions, sometimes you just can't think of it yourself. As for valarien, I am not interested in taking such a strong herb, really seems like over kill for my situation. I actually want to nourish myself as I dance through this phase of my life. I am excited and want to bring the nourishing herbs in more fully, so I can be fully present for menopause. And I do have Susun Weeds book, and as a matter of fact I just spent 3 days hosting her here in Wisconsin and she spoke on menopause. It was a wonderful reminder of how delightful this phase of life can be.

Any other thoughts, suggestions etc are welcome.
            Blessings

Actually I am finding red clover to feel really good. Funny raspberry leaf has never been one of my favorite herbs. I know some enjoy it, but I rarely feel drawn to it. This month my bleeding lasted a little longer than usual and I felt a little less grounded than usual. From what I understand this is part of the metamorphosis and I am going with it.
