"To change ourselves, we change what we open ourselves to. We change how we nourish
ourselves."
This is an excerpt from Susun Weed's on line course The Seven Rivers. I recently received this section of the course and am reminded of how important what we open ourselves to is. I used to think I needed to be open to everything, but truly as I have explored many healing options I have found that I can pick and choose what I want to be open to, what I want to nourish me. This seems over and over to be the cornerstone of my own life journey and to what keeps me vibrant and alive.
One piece of this is that I choose relationship to all that comes into my life. To my food, my medicine, the land, the people that surround me. Nourishing relationship seems critical. What about you, what nourishes you to the depths?
Herbally, I nourished myself this evening with a salad from the yard. Many wild things: chickweed, dandelion, lambs quarters, sweet cicely, violet flowers and others. I feel particularly nourished by this, after being on the road for several days. Along the way we harvested Arnica flowers and they nourished me with their vibrancy..the flowers practically shake in my hands when I held them. I give thanks and would love to hear what is nourishing to you.
Blessings
Linda

Re: What do you choose to nourish you?
Sun, June 14, 2009 - 2:46 PMright now in a hot desert conservative backdesert community - don't gasp too hard! lime popsicles and an old vicks cough drop.. I have an allergic reaction to much dirt raking and weedpulling. I have kept away from eating many things which are much worse for me. Lots of plain water.
completing that which I begin really nourishes me!
following through
being kind when another changes a plan which inconveniences me
I feel good for staying centered with being ok with things. -

Re: What do you choose to nourish you?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 11:02 AMmy hands and feet in the dirt, the smell of the earth as I work in it.
on that note, my mother recently came for a visit. she is has been struggling with disabilities due to degenerative disease, and was having trouble walking, speaking, and doing anything much but crying. she woke up feeling depressed the first morning here, and i coaxed her out into the garden and got her into a chair next to some aromatic flowers, hoping she might get up the energy to take a little walk around the garden. half an hour later i was startled when i couldn't find her. turned out she was cruising around the backyard with my garden tools, beaming. it was really amazing to watch her all week being transformed by nature, to see her old glow return. after a few days outside, her physical and emotional complaints pretty much ceased.
i work as a gardener for a few agile, sharp people in their 90's, and i believe their time interacting so closely with nature does magic to keep their bodies and spirits vibrant. -

How powerful! I love that you could not find her. How wise to have her sit in the garden, a true wise woman at work..smile! Thanks for sharing.

Re: What do you choose to nourish you?
Fri, June 26, 2009 - 8:35 AMI love the feeling that the word "nourish" emotes - the connotations make me breathe more freely - all is well because I am choosing to do what makes me well.
Nature - nurture - nourish - nice!
My nervous system is soothed when I remember that have all the time I need - I can awaken in the present and absorb, experience and enjoy what is right for me and right for now. I have time to tend to the garden, to read, to ride my bike, to listen to what my daughter is saying, to eat greens, and to stretch my body deeply.
Thanks for posting this question, Linda!
Blessings,
