Greetings all and happy fall. We have had a few new folks join lately and I thought it was time once again to introduce ourselves. I always find it interesting to get an idea of what background folks have and what they might be hoping to experience by joining the Herbal Wisdom Tribe.
Even if you have been around for awhile, say hello and share about yourself. Perhaps something new is happening for you or you have insight into the plants that you are living to share. Whatever it might be.
I will share some, for those of you who do not know me I work with plants and find that the foundation of health is nourishment. The nourishing herbal plants that provide vitamins, minerals and other nutrients as well as whole and wild foods, provive the crux of where I like to put my energy. Without them, even applying the more alkaloid rich plants, seems misguided. My favorite saying is to ask "where is the nourishment?".
I started the Herbal Wisdom Tribe as an experiment to see if it was possible on tribe to have a place to share about plants without all the chaos that seems to go with many of the discussion groups that exist here. So far so good, it seems to be working. I enjoy moderating this tribe and learn alot about interacting with people and I love hearing about other peoples experiences with the plants.
Today I am catching up on paper work and getting ready to make soap. I enjoy making much of what I need in life from scratch or trading with others who do make things. I look forward to hearing from some of you as well.
Blessings,
Linda

Re: Welcome and introductions
Thu, October 29, 2009 - 12:16 PMkia ora everyone..I live in this wondrous land called New Zealand..where it's spring right now...I'm prepping the soil..have planted red onions garlic and strawberries..I have had to protect my 2 heirloom toms from the cold snap..
I'm currently harvesting elderberry flowers for herbal teas..it is helping for my hayfever...there are elderberry trees everywhere I have discovered..in fact Iam abit obsessed in looking for them when out driving now..haha..
I'm a single parent and my daughter has some health challenges of which Iam using herbs to support her besides some allopathic treatments..
I was in the Post Office the other day and someone walks in who I harvested elderberry flowers from and the ladies behind the desk overhear and ask about them and then we get onto other herbs too and they are delighted and keen to pick some themselves...the thing was how easily it can be to share something so simple and how the herbal wisdom penetrates even those who remember tidbits from their childhoods...
Have a lovely day everyone!!! -

Re: Welcome and introductions
Fri, October 30, 2009 - 10:22 AMThanks Linda and Glistenz,
I am a shamanic herbalist, teacher and gardener living with my husband Tadd, four goats and a cat and...wild plants and weeds, garden plants and wise trees on Whidbey Island in Washington State. Tadd and I just gave death to our goat boy Marley last week with a friend who also had a goat boy. We had ceremony before and then welcomed two men who helped us and took the carcass of our goat to be butchered/turned into cuts of meat. We just picked the meat up yesterday.
It was a beautiful and sacred experience for me, and I feel more fully alive after.
Wild rose hips are in flat baskets in our living room, sourdough starter I made from harvested grapes on the counter with many herbal preparations, saurkraut and homemade goat cheese.
It is a good life here.
I am expanding my work now into hiring two staff people this fall/winter. I am excited about being able to offer even more of the shamanic herbal tradition of the wise woman to people in my community and beyond.
I am traveling to Vermont in December to participate in Toni Stone's Prosperity Teacher Training. I like to think of this as "possibility boot camp" :<).
Green Blessings to all,
Julie -

Re: Welcome and introductions
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 5:53 PMHello all, I've studied herbs and nutrition independently for the last three years and actively write health and nutrition articles for a few places. This was initially done to find a cure for my seizures and epilepsy, which I've done. I also just began studying at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in NYC. There are so many wonderful things nature provides for us all. -

Re: Welcome and introductions
Sun, November 1, 2009 - 10:15 PMThanks for sharing and I am glad you are all here. I find hearing plant stories from others as well as sharing wisdom contributes to my wisdom. We all have something to share. I am finding that I am a teacher and a receiver. I really appreciate my place in the circle of plant people. I hope to continue to hear from many of you, as winter approaches for many of us, but not all. For me it is time to go inward. I am cozy by the wood stove, drinking fresh pressed apple and pear cider as well as planning programs for the upcoming year, exploring ways to continue to transition to life on the land and enjoying menopause. It would be great to hear from more of you.
Blessings

Re: Welcome and introductions
Mon, November 2, 2009 - 10:26 AMMy name is Peter. I'm a student at Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I am currently at a fall camp, which is hosted by an old Ford sawmill town in the middle of Keweenaw Country. The blueberry harvest was spectacular this year! And is helping me get through the changes I always undertake in the dawn of winter.
Lately I have harvested wild red raspberry leaves for making tea. They dry very well and don't mold (they were sitting uncovered in a dorm room for two weeks before I packaged them. Wintergreen (Gaultheria Procumbens) also abounds here, and make very tasty chews on hikes through the 5000 acre woodland that we take classes on here.
I study Applied Ecology, which encompasses Environmental studies, forestry, wildlife studies, and plant sciences. I plan to continue in the field of edible landscape design, or music after I complete school in 2011.
I also plan to hike the Appalachian Trail in the year 2012, and will come across many wonderful edible and useful plants across the 12 or so states I will be walking through!
Glad you're all here too

Re: Welcome and introductions
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 11:14 AMHi Trish,
I think you have mentioned a few things in the past, but I wonder if you can share what has worked for you for seizures. My partner has epilepsy and we too have had good success weaning him off really harsh drugs, by using herbs (skullcap and oatstraw) as well as diet changes...kefir and raw milk seem to be critical for him. But wondering what has worked for you..if you are willing to share. We can start a new thread too, if that feels better to you go ahead and do that.
Blessings

Re: Welcome and introductions
Thu, November 12, 2009 - 4:16 AMHii love herbs. they are wonderful friends and allies and provide support on so many levels! i have been learning about herbs and i am finding it to be a profound path!this past month i feel like i have made a breakthrough to the commitment i have to how my work/vocation and herbs are alligned. i know i feel about herbal medicine the way that i wanted to feel about my life's work. it seems to me there are so many ways to serve and be served by the plants and i am not sure what my niche/service will be. i recently moved to asheville, nc to be closer with my family. i mean parents - but the plant families in these mountains are amazing me. i moved from occidental, ca. i first apprenticed pretty close to mount shasta.
i have been apprenticing on farms since i began studying herbs, and here too i learn to grow and spread medicine. i feel that i want these amazing plants and their families to be abundant. so that the information is easily accessible. so that we become a society that supports health and wellness of ourselves and ecosystem. i am starting to feel a larger whole to the pieces of truly integrating this medicine back into our society.
all this said - i love having a forum. many forums. to meet and talk with herbal medicine peoples. the sharing of information is generous and necessary.
peace and hugs,
lisa -

Re: Welcome and introductions
Thu, November 12, 2009 - 9:31 AMthanks amanda. it is a great place. and there are many schools and herbal teachers. i am amazed at the continuity of herbal traditions from these mountains! there are also great teachers to the north. i have been curious about david winston in new jersey. and tai sophia provides, what seems, quite a linear path to learn herbs. -
