Hi all..I am preparing for a children's program which is next week. I have lots planned, but wanted a few more ideas. We are going to plant broom corn, make a broom, learn that broom corn is in the grass family...we will learn about the band aid plant, how to choose plant friends..as well as learn to enjoy being outdoors with the plants. We will make sachets, drink oatstraw lemonade, learn that oats are the plant that oatmeals is made of. We will also plant oats. We will make a lip balm and healing salve, as well as make a soothing spray. We will eat plants and see how they taste as well as prepare a wild salad. Of course there are always, many spontaneous learnings in these situations, but wanted some suggestions from others as well. These are a few things I have planned...and or course much more. But if anyone has some really good suggestions I would love to hear them.
Blessings

Sun, June 14, 2009 - 2:06 PMSounds great.
Mulberry tatoos/face painting is fun too, but not quite the season yet. :-) I also love sharing lamb's ear with young ones, and demonstrating how to make soothing bandages. -

Re: Children and plants
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 7:51 PMI am finishing the week with the children's program and it has gone really well. Even thought there was a large group, we managed to have a lot of fun, we sang songs, played with plants, made a broom, made soap, dream pillows, had a scavenger hunt, looking for things of the natural world and learned botany to boot. I read Sheyla's Quest to them, one plant family at a time. They picked it up, faster than many of the adults I have worked with. Has been a pleasure. I was nervous because, I have worked with children in smaller groups, but had quite a large group this time and was not sure how it would go, but it has gone well. Rumors are that children from the other camps are already wanting to sign up for my class next year!

Re: Children and plants
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 9:59 PMthat sounds like great fun, no wonder the others want to join in next year!
i was gifted a book: mugworts in may, a folklore of herbs...by linda ours rago
and i thought of you and this class. it is a book of short rhymes and folk lore. i enjoy it :)
yarrow, yarrow tremble and sway
tiny flowers bright and gay
protect my garden night and day
a traditional seed sowing song i will surely teach my children:
one for the rook, one for the crow,
one to die and one to grow.
it is a delightful book. she is a local author to boot!
i have been fighting the urge to call her (yes i looked)
and ask if she could use some help in her gardens :) -

Fri, June 26, 2009 - 8:08 AMoh, why fight the urge? if you're worried about bothering her, you could send a note and ask. i can't keep up with my gardening tasks even when i'm not working this summer, and if i were an author, it would be so much harder. maybe she'd be thrilled! -
