What is your approach to combating swine flu? For me, I've drawn a link between the 1918 pandemic and today's swine flu. The 1918 pandemic survivors were shown to have used dandelion root, and I'm doing the same for prevention. Yet, there are so many things out there. Please share what you know. I'm interested in the many options out there.

Re: Combating Swine Flu
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 1:57 PMI don't have a link to offer. However, I strongly recommend reading Herbalist Briggitte Mars book on Dandelion Medicine, which includes multiple recipes for using the entire flower. Ryan Drum is an herbalist in Washington state that sells the entire root to you fresh, if you prefer. Briggitte's book, especially for those immersed in natural medicine already, is a must read. It's hard to give a one or even two sentence answer to the many parallels between these two strains - from 1918 and today. Let me explore some other junctures, and get back to you, Amanda.
I love the article you shared from the blog. Thanks. -

Re: Combating Swine Flu
Sat, November 7, 2009 - 3:50 PMHi Trish and everyone,
I like to focus my attention on optimum health and well-being and not focus too much on the current news about different diseases.
I really appreciate you mentioning dandelion, there are so many healing way about this plant.
I have Brigette's book and now will open it again.
I have been using Wild Rose leaf and flower tincture as an anti-viral for a few years now and often support this plant with
lomatium seed. There are many anti-viral plants. I think we all have the ones that are near and dear to us.
I recently made quite a bit of wild rose hips tincture and utilize this form of the plant also.
Mentioned in another thread was how important fermented food are, how vital it is to support healthy gut flora.
Dandelion Root infused vinegar will accomplish this. I read recently that there is more inulin (the starchy substance that nourishes the gut flora) in the roasted dandelion root. I found this fascinating and wondered if this is why the roasting was done.
I am drinking a grape cooler as I write this. Press grapes from our vines, whey and salt. It is a very good fermented
drink.
I really like that we keep going over this same topic in so many ways. I think it is needed.
One more thing that is fascinating to me...recently my chiropractor wrote in his newsletter that talking about our worries about
diseases,i.e. swine flu can actually increase our chances of getting them. That healthy talk promotes health and talk toward
disease promotes that.
Peace and Green Blessings,

Re: Combating Swine Flu
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 2:42 PMI'm with Julie. With all respect and empathy for those suffering out of fear or illness related to this virus, I don't have any interest in combatting swine flu. I'm not convinced that it's not an ally for the earth. Or for humans who respect that life might be more than us feeling safe and healthy and unchallenged. -

Re: Combating Swine Flu
Mon, November 9, 2009 - 3:52 PMMegan, I understand what you're saying, and even agree. I used the verb I did because most readers respond to the energy from being able to get rid of something that is not the best for them. Actually, I was just following the advice of tribe...try to catch others' attention when you title your post. I guess not all the tricks in freelancing apply.
Maybe my mode has been entirely combat-oriented in the last few years, and I can now slow down and enjoy being able to truly embrace and embody total health. It's a new thing for me, so I think I'm adjusting still. -

Mon, November 9, 2009 - 8:41 PM" can now slow down and enjoy being able to truly embrace and embody total health"
Hi Trish,
I am excited to hear where this journey takes you. One thought I had is that I beleive it is important to define on your own terms what total health is. I know for me, it changes and is something that I am continually redefining. I define it differently today than I did even 10 years ago...and it has been a journey for sure.

Re: Combating Swine Flu
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 12:52 AMMy husband lost his spleen in a bad accident 30 years ago and the doctors have phoned last night to suggest he has 2 lots of the swine flu vaccination. Obviously I am keen to try a more herbal approach, however an 8 year old child died in this area recently from swine flu and was the first who had no other underlying medical condition. It's a difficult one, should he go ahead and protect himself or should I try and build up his immune system with herbs?
I know it is a personal decision but I would appreciate any feedback on this as soon as possible...
Blessings

I am going to respond in the other thread that I started on Promoting health as I don't want to continue in the combat mode.
