I've been trying to organize a hexayurt build day for a group of burners in the South Bay and material availability has been a problem. After trying to locate a source for Thermax with little success I decided that I'd recommend the tried and true Tuff-R from Home Depot. I had seen the stuff and priced it just a couple of weeks ago and availability seemed good.
Over the last week I've been checking various Home Depots to see how much Tuff-R they had in stock, and I was surprised that none of them seemed to carry it -- only the unreinforced white polystyrene (styrofoam) panels. Luckily, I knew one Home Depot that definitely stocked it, and they had several pallets the last time I was there. So yesterday I arranged for a friend with a truck to meet me at the Home Depot on Lafayette Street in San Jose to buy my Tuff-R panels.
There was no Tuff-R.
After talking to a couple of employees and escalating to a supervisor I discovered that Home Depot (at least in this region) will no longer carry Tuff-R or Rmax. Unknown if there will be a replacement product but for now they have NO foil-faced polyiso rigid insulation panels.
But what happened to the pallets of the stuff I saw less than two weeks ago? I told them I'd follow it wherever it went, I needed the stuff.
They gave it away. They had it on clearance for a week, and what was left they gave away. "Yesterday." The day before I showed up to make my purchase.
Un. Be. Lievable.
So now the backup panel supply has fallen through.
Now I'm scrambling and panicking to find someone who has Tuff-R or similar *in stock* because my scheduled build day is only a week away and even if I rescheduled the build day, special ordering the stuff would probably take 3 weeks which is way too close to the Burn for comfort.
So, firstly, everybody who is interested in panels should call their local Home Depots to see if they're still carrying Tuff-R or Rmax... and if they are planning on getting rid of it see if you can get it cheap or free. I personally have a need for 100-200 panels of the stuff.
Secondly, if anybody knows of a source for Tuff-R, Rmax, or Thermax (or any similar product) that has it IN STOCK I'd really appreciate the contact info.
Namaste,
Tommy Legba

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Sat, July 26, 2008 - 12:03 AMIt has also disappeared down here in San Diego. What I am thinking about doing is buying the white polystyrene they are now carrying and lining it with the aluminum air duct tape that I have. The aluminum tape will give it some structural strength and the reflective aspect you need for the desert. I am not totally sure about what if any off-gassing might occur with polystyrene in the desert sun/heat.
I haven't priced out how many rolls of 3inch tape you would need to cover a 4 X 8 panel, so it could potentially get pricey. I was just looking to add a few walls to my already built TuffR yurt. -

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 2:01 PMI just bought 12 sheets of 1" Rmax at the El Cajon Home Depot yesterday. There are still about 8-10 sheets of 1' and about 5-10 sheets of 2" there as of earlier today. It would probably be cheaper to order R+Heatshield if you're going to go the self-reflective lining route.
I'm going to be fabricating mine over the next week and wouldn't mind spending time with other local hexayurt builders. Shoot me a message if you want to get together. -

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 4:43 PMHey, we are also building one or two for this year. And we are local. And we have never done it before but we are going to get together this Sunday to start building! That is if we find Tuff-R/Rmax in stores. I had no idea that there could be any problem with supplies. Did you get the tape at Home Depot as well? Uff, we better hurry :)

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Thu, July 31, 2008 - 5:57 PMYou're probably SOL on building this sunday if you don't already have the tape.
You have to order the tape online and it's not easy to get. I posted about the best place to order the tape from earlier in this community. It's a company called tape rite, you have to call them and ask them for the 6" bidirrectional fillament tape and tell them it's for a hexayurt otherwise you have to buy a case and pay a service fee. A guy called Dr. Tape works there and is a burner who is happy to give us a deal. It took about 5 days for me to get it.
The El Cajon Home depot has a little bit of Rmax left. I suggest you go buy it asap. -

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Sun, July 27, 2008 - 5:43 PMYikes.
Same deal here in Oakland. Two large gaping holes where it should be. There are a few other building material suppliers around here that I'm going to try tomorrow (closed on Sunday), wish me luck.

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Wed, July 30, 2008 - 7:14 PMFwiw, the Boston area Home Depots still have it. Though anyone in Boston wanting a hexayurt for the playa should have gotten it weeks ago since we need to be packed for Burning Man before Aug 10.

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Mon, August 4, 2008 - 3:20 PMI didn't see it at Home Depot, but Lowe's had a ton of it...you should check them out as well

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Wed, August 20, 2008 - 9:46 AMIf you are a slacker like me and still haven't bought your hexayurt material, it is still available in the East Bay. I decided to go to Burning Man last week (after changing my mind 20 times this year) and then deciding to build a stretch hexayurt over the weekend, I called around for Thermax yesterday. Truitt and White of Berkeley has the 1" material and 1.5" material. Ashby Lumber has the 1.5" material although they called it something else. At Truitt and White the 1" sheets are $20.73 per sheet, contractor pricing. Show up in a paint spattered sweatshirt and You Are A Contractor.

Re: Home Depot discontinues Tuff-R/Rmax
Wed, June 17, 2009 - 4:16 PMHome Depot PRO, just down the street from Home Depot (Regular) in Colma, CA south of SF had dozens and dozens of pristine sheets of 1.5" and 2" sheets of Rmax Sunday 14JUN09. There are some sheets at floor level (I picked out 8 perfect ones) but there are severeal unopened pallets up in the storage rafters. I think the Pro stores are geared to contractors and thus have a better selection of building materials than the reg. stores.
Please make sure you go the the Home Depot Pro store, and not the regular Home Depot a block away. The regular store had no Rmax.
