Hexa-yurt people, Beware:
There is a residue on the edges of the R-Max 1" 4x8 sheets from which we made our 3 yurts I suspect it's lubricant for the band saw that they must use to cut these sheets. The oil would keep the blades from ripping the delicate material apart. It extends about 1" from each of the long edges. 409, Simple Green, and 100% Rubbing Alcohol (IpA for the science geeks) will NOT take it off. It's fucking awful. The tape won't stick to this. Edging was- problematic.
I solved this problem after we had done our best with 90% of our work:
I used steel wool to roughen up the a 3" border around the edge of the foam sheets.
This physically removed some if not most of the residue and the rough surface allowed the tape to get a good grip. On the advice of Gadget, I have a can of 3M Formula 77 spray adhesive with me. A light dusting of this will make the tape stick to goddamn anything. Oily residue or no. If we have issue with the constructed yurts, this will fix it cold.
Also, we are using 6" wide tape for the seams. This should extend past the residue area and allow a good grip. If not- pshhht (cheesy spray sound)- and we fix it.
We have packed a gallon of Khaki paint, a paint tray and two rollers. Being anywhere near this shit in the daylight (on the outside) will be excruciating. We are going to make our neighbors happy and paint it something more, well, Rangerly. :)
We're in 3 Hexayurts we are connecting together. 9 O'Clock and B at Ranger Outpost Tokyo.
Ranger Bacchus- Out.
