Hello all,
Well, I've got to say, the writer of the story in the Source really did a doozy.
To put it bluntly, he fabricated a "story" about bellydance, complete with an "interview" w/2 members of Gypsy Fire.....The reason I say "interviews", is that I'm not sure that he was present at the same one that Julia and I gave.....we were misquoted, and the man *obviously* had some typical, IGNORANT pre-conceived notions about bellydance, that he simply used us to create "facts" about the dance that would support the simple conclusion that: "....the purpose of bellydancing- to entice arousal" Basically, the usual: bellydancing=stripping...
AAAAAARGH!!!!!! I am so frustrated that we personally, and that bellydancers in general have been portrayed like this again, and in a local, widely read, publication!
I wanted to put the word out there, that this article does NOT represent what we talked about in the interview, and does NOT represent my views about dance, and to let you all know that I am embarrassed to have my name and picture attached to this in any way, shape or form.....
Please write to the Source, if you feel the need to rebut the "story"....I know I plan to....

Thu, February 8, 2007 - 6:01 PMI am on shock over the articule. We try so hard to down play the fact that most of the population looks at beelydance as some erotic pole minus the pole. When I told my own mother my partner was a bellydancer her comment was, "WHAT she works for tips?"
Whoever the jerk was that wrote that piece needs to be tarred and feather and hung by a rope from his family jewels. -

Fri, February 9, 2007 - 9:51 AMI'm really glad we're all letting them know what's really up with bellydance. An apology on their part is definately in order. But to really help undo the damage that was done, a new article is needed, one that explores the history and traditions of this dance, as well as it's current forms. I haven't sent them my letter yet, but I'm going to suggest that they do just that. I think it would be more effective if I weren't the only one.

Thu, February 15, 2007 - 11:48 PMOh this sounds awful-- how bad was it?? I'm in Eugene, so I can't get ahold of the Source, and the website doesn't seem to contain the article in question anywhere-- anybody know where it might be?
I did manage to find several of the editorials that got sent in, by Quinn, Tracy, and Zweena-- good stuff, I really hope they take your advice and feature a proper article!

Mon, March 17, 2008 - 10:56 PMQuinn, years ago we had the same thing happen at one of our events in Portland. We furnished all the necessary information, invited the reporter to come and watch, it was a combination belly dance and Hawaian dance. The remarks he made was in such bad taste that it fueled a big fire under the dancers. His closing statement was the only difference between erotic and exotic is the X. BTW he never came to the show either. The newpaper was bombarded with letters from the dancers about this. We never did seen any more of his crap reviews.

Wed, April 16, 2008 - 1:58 PMI'm just getting back into dance...not sure why I stopped!! But anyway, I happen to be the EIC at The Newberry Eagle in south county. I've started a fitness class down here using basic belly dance moves "ShimmyFit" (copyrights!) is a big hit in this little rural community!! I've started a dance revolution!! Anyway, I would LOVE to work with you on a big story for my newspaper - the way it was SUPPOSED to be written (missed it in the Source, but I can imagine!).
