Well, I've got to say, the writer of the story in the Source really did a doozy.
To put it bluntly, he fabricated a "story" about bellydance, complete with an "interview" w/2 members of Gypsy Fire.....The reason I say "interviews", is that I'm not sure that he was present at the same one that Julia and I gave.....we were misquoted, and the man *obviously* had some typical, IGNORANT pre-conceived notions about bellydance, that he simply used us to create "facts" about the dance that would support the simple conclusion that: "....the purpose of bellydancing- to entice arousal" Basically, the usual: bellydancing=stripping...

AAAAAARGH!!!!!! I am so frustrated that we personally, and that bellydancers in general have been portrayed like this again, and in a local, widely read, publication!

I wanted to put the word out there, that this article does NOT represent what we talked about in the interview, and does NOT represent my views about dance, and to let you all know that I am embarrassed to have my name and picture attached to this in any way, shape or form.....
Please write to the Source, if you feel the need to rebut the "story"....I know I plan to....

You can help us make our first showcase of 2008 a huge success by joining us and bringing your friends and family! The Guild’s quarterly showcase is open to the public and all Middle Eastern dancers who are Guild members are eligible to perform regardless of experience. Guild showcases provide an opportunity for amateur dancers to gain performance experience, as well as a venue for professional performers to promote their talents within the greater Central Oregon community. Dance spaces are limited and dancers must pre-register by contacting Sahara.

Established in 2005, the High Desert Belly Dance Guild supports Central Oregon's belly dance community. The mission of the Guild is threefold:
• To promote belly dance to the public as a legitimate art form.
• To provide professional development and performance opportunities for members of the belly dance community.
• To facilitate communication among members of the belly dance community and to provide opportunities for community-building and support.

Duets, Trios, etc. - 7 minute set max.

Join performers from the High Desert Belly Dance Guild for their first Middle Eastern Dance Showcase of 2007 on Wednesday, January 24th at The Grove. Beginning at 8:30 p.m., our show will feature a variety of regional talent performing a few of the many different styles of belly dance. Expect performances from "Old Style" Egyptian and classic Cabaret dancers to troupes breaking the mold with the latest in Tribal stylizations.

The performers in each showcase change, but the fun, enthusiasm and creativity in each show remains the same. If you are new to the Guild or just new to town, try something a little different in the new year - come out and join us! The Guild’s quarterly showcase is open to the public and all Middle Eastern dancers who are Guild members are eligible to perform regardless of experience. Guild shows provide an opportunity for amateur dancers to gain performance experience, as well as a venue for professional performers to promote their talents within the greater Central Oregon community. Dance spaces are limited and dancers must pre-register by emailing bijoubellydance@yahoo.com.

For those unfamiliar with this annual Bend event, it includes downhill ski, cross-country ski, bike, run, and paddle (kyak or canoe). I've done all the parts of the event and it's lots of fun (totally non-competitive). The "race" is in May. I'm willing to do the cross-country ski & organize the team if anyone is interested. If anyone else thinks this sounds fun, let me know either through this forum or my email: zot@bendcable.com.
