Wis. Democrats oust delegate over McCain support
By RYAN J. FOLEY, Associated Press Writer
Fri Jul 25, 5:07 PM ET

Wisconsin Democrats on Friday ousted a delegate to their national convention for saying she would vote for Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain in November.

Embarrassed by a defection in their ranks, the Wisconsin Democratic Party's administrative committee voted 23-0 to strip Debra Bartoshevich of her status as a delegate to the Denver convention next month.

Bartoshevich was elected by party activists as a pledged delegate for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton from the 1st Congressional District in southeastern Wisconsin. But after Clinton dropped out of the race, Bartoshevich told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel she would support McCain over Democratic Sen. Barack Obama.

The June comments from Bartoshevich, a 41-year-old nurse and mother of two from Waterford, were seized on by the McCain campaign as evidence of his appeal to former Clinton backers. Within hours, the Wisconsin Democratic Party passed a resolution at its state convention supporting a challenge of her credentials with the national committee.

The party's rules and bylaws committee said the state party could decide the matter, clearing the way for Friday's vote. Committee members agreed Bartoshevich had lost her privilege to be one of the state's 92 Democratic delegates because of her comments and affiliation with "Citizens for McCain," a branch of his campaign designed to recruit independents and Democrats.

During a teleconference before the vote, Bartoshevich asked the committee to allow her to attend the convention as a delegate for Clinton. She noted that she donated her time and money to Clinton and still believes the former first lady is the best candidate.

She said she made the comments backing McCain during an emotional time shortly after Clinton dropped out of the race and as a first-time delegate was unfamiliar with party rules. She said she had not decided who to ultimately support and was still open to backing Obama if he won her over. "I'd like to go to the convention and listen," she said.

She said her sister was a McCain supporter who signed her up for "Citizens for McCain."

"You reached right back and hugged them. I have a problem with that," committee member Dottie LeClaire responded.

The committee accepted a challenge that stated Bartoshevich violated rules requiring delegates to support the party's nominee and be faithful to the party. Bartoshevich will be replaced by Marilyn Nemeth of Racine, who finished second to Bartoshevich in the delegate election earlier this year.

http://www.nownys.org/pr_2008/pr_060508.html

"In recent times, the Republicans have stood for their beliefs. Although many of us progressives fight vehemently against their platform, at least we know who the enemy is. This time the Democrats have shown their true colors and it's high time for a party that respects the needs and rights of over half the population. Maybe Senator Clinton should start a National Women's Party. She certainly has the base she would need to make it happen. At least that party will state its mission clearly through it's title. The Democrats certainly did not live up to their name."

Latest Note From Hillary

This was the latest email I got from Hillary and her people.

"On February 8, in Unity, New Hampshire, 107 people voted for me, and 107 people voted for Senator Barack Obama.

Today, Barack and I were in Unity to celebrate a unified Democratic Party focused on electing him the next president. I was proud to stand with him today, and I will do whatever I can to help his campaign between now and November.

Senator McCain and the Republicans may have hoped that we wouldn't join forces like this. They may have wished that we wouldn't stand united to fight this battle with everything we've got.

But I've got news for them: We are one party; we are one America; and we are not going to rest until we take back our country and put it once again on the path to peace, prosperity, and progress in the 21st century."

********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Does this sound like a woman that would be okay with her supporters jumping ship and voting for McCain? I don't think so.

Wisconsin Super Delegate Asking for Help!

1.) REQUEST FOR HELP FROM PLEDGED HILLARY DELEGATE!!!!

From: (You know who)
Sent: Wednesday, July 02, 2008 2:06 AM

Subject: Please send a letter to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin

As you are well aware, I am the national delegate the Democratic Party wants to strip my credentials because I will not support Obama. I am committed to Hillary only and that is the job I was asked to do. I want to vote for her at the convention. She has not released her delegates. I never received any by-laws and was unaware that I have to vote for Obama in November. I am asking everyone to write and e-mail the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. The e-mail is party@wisdems.org and put it to the attention of the chair-Joe Wineke.

The exact address is:
222 W. Washington Avenue, Ste. 150
Madison, WI 53703

Please let them know that if Senator Obama can not convince me to support him in the greatest arena-the Democratic National Convention, what chance does he have to convince the American people to vote for him? The burden is on Senator Obama. I have one job only and that is to represent those thousands of Democrats that I was elected to represent as a delegate. I have said this before, “I am a committed delegate to Hillary only.” I was told that was my job and I am sticking to it.

Please let the Wisconsin Democratic Party know that they are suppressing my first amendment right!

"[P]atriotism can never be defined as loyalty to any particular leader or government or policy. As Mark Twain, that greatest of American satirists and proud son of Missouri, once wrote, 'Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.' We may hope that our leaders and our government stand up for our ideals, and there are many times in our history when that's occurred. But when our laws, our leaders or our government are out of alignment with our ideals, then the dissent of ordinary Americans may prove to be one of the truest expression of patriotism."

Guess Who?
Senator Barack Obama
"Patriotism Speech"
June 30, 2008
Independence, Missouri

_____________________________________________

2.) First Responder to the request for help, Bettyjean writes:
This is the letter I sent and who I sent it to :

Attention Chair-Joe Wineke.
party@wisdems.org
222 W. Washington Avenue, Ste. 150
Madison, WI 53703

Alice Garmond
DNC Secretary
AliceGermond@dnc.org

I would like to know exactly what your intentions are in regard to the Hillary Clinton delegates should they refuse to switch their votes to Barack Obama at the Denver Convention in August?

Under what law can you force your delegates to switch their vote or risk being stripped of their credentials? If there are no laws is it your intention to harass, bully, or otherwise threaten or humiliate delegates into changing their votes?

Perhaps it is your intent to cancel the roll call altogether ?

Please be advised that the Democratic Party as a whole is already in serious danger of being stripped by its constituency of its authority to continue to exist. Further, continued abrogation of the people’s rights to full representation will surely result in dismissal of your services individually as your terms provide us opportunity.

As Mark Twain, that greatest of American satirists and proud son of Missouri, once wrote, 'Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.' We may hope that our leaders and our government stand up for our ideals, and there are many times in our history when that's occurred. But when our laws, our leaders or our government are out of alignment with our ideals, then the dissent of ordinary Americans may prove to be one of the truest expressions of patriotism."

Will McCain Crack the Gay Vote? If he doesn't pick an Uber-Conservative Veep, maybe so....

http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/can-mccain-crack-the-gay-vote/

"I’m gay, live in San Francisco, voted and donated money to Hillary Clinton. I’ve never voted for a Republican for president — though I did vote for Arnold in 2006. No way in hell am I voting for Obama, and McCain is 95% of the way towards winning my vote. As long as he doesn’t pick an uber-social conservative [running mate], I’m in."

"He called the Illinois senator “a hypocritical liar” for his constantly changing stands on his former pastor. Another, a student from Ohio, said “Obama is a blank slate candidate; he has fabricated an identity with help from the press and his books. He has no real record of being a ‘post-partisan.’” A scientist and technical project manager in Silicon Valley called Obama a “good motivational speaker [who] has gotten ahead of himself.”

This man seemed the most enthusiastic about McCain because he likes “good government conservatives. … McCain has always impressed me with his vigor in supporting lobbying, campaign finance, and ethics reform as well as his stand against earmarks.” The Ohio student, the most enthusiastic Hillary supporter (of those I contacted for this article), believes the presumptive Republican nominee “brings similar things that Hillary has: experience, hard work, a record of bucking trends, and fighting ahead.” All those who responded to my questions thought the economy was the most important issue."

Very nice editorial piece:

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/06/21/IN9B11A2MT.DTL&type=politics

"The wound is opened anew when one of the most well-known exemplars of mainstream television suddenly dies and is revered as a "colossus" of journalism. This is the same man, the late Tim Russert, who chuckled benevolently when one of his guests, Christopher Hitchens on "Meet the Press," repeatedly called Hillary Clinton a "bitch." This is the same news icon who was satirized on "Saturday Night Live" as pitching softballs to Barack Obama and double whammy corkscrew change-ups to Hillary when he moderated a nationally televised debate. Women won't forgive him, even as he's laid to rest.

These traditional feminist women are also greatly offended by the Obama supporters who dismissed them as "sore losers" when they complained about the abuse aimed at Hillary. These women see Obama's people as treating Hillary like poison, someone unworthy of being on the same ticket with their man, despite receiving 18 million votes and possessing high-level skills and experience. And that view really, really irks these women, who are a powerful voting bloc in their own right."

That does not make half of us "Trolls." Nor does it make us "Freepers."

It is an insult to call a fellow Dem by these kinds of names. Just as it would be for them to call your half of the party the "Nutroots" or the "Obamatrons."

We all have a right to fight... to have our voices heard. That is the meaning of Democracy.

Feminists, the choice is obvious

http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2008/06/08/feminists_the_choice_is_obvious/

DEAR FELLOW feminists,
more stories like this

Yes, I qualify. Like some of you, I grew up in an era where a woman president was an impossibility, where there were no women doctors, few women in positions of power, no women professors. I went to a coeducational college, where, although women got higher grades than men, we never directed plays, edited the newspaper, or were allowed to lead an organization. We washed dishes regularly in our dorms, while our fellow male students had maids clean their rooms for them. We had male professors who openly derided the idea of women scientists. We graduated and became secretaries; the men graduated and became reporters for The New York Times. I raised my son when there was no child care, was raped before there were rape crisis centers or anyone to talk to.

I get it.

I marched for women's rights, helped found the first feminist group in Cambridge, and like some of you, danced for joy when Geraldine Ferraro was nominated for vice president.

But I also grew up in an era when an African-American president was an impossibility, when African-Americans in the South were shot for having the temerity to vote. I worked for civil rights, registered black voters. Later, I witnessed busing in Boston, where angry white mobs stoned school buses filled with terrified black children, where people of color were never in power.

I get it.

I support Barack Obama for president. It's OK that you have supported Hillary Clinton. I get it, I really do. What I don't get, can't get, is seeing some of you riled up Clinton supporters threatening to vote for McCain.

Let me get this straight; you consider yourself a Democrat and a feminist. Yet rather than vote for a man who supports a woman's right to choose, children's healthcare, and an end to the war in Iraq, you would vote for a man who voted against all of these things.

You would vote for a man who is promising to nominate far-right activists for the Supreme Court, a man who votes consistently against choice, affirmative action, and workers' rights.

You would vote for a man who supports President Bush on most major issues vs. a man whose positions are quite similar to Clinton's.

I just don't get it.

Obama followed the rules, took his name off the ballot in Michigan, and didn't campaign in Florida or the Great Lakes State when his party told him not to. Meanwhile Clinton, who said at the time that those votes "shouldn't count" ended up yelling that they should.

Obama has generally taken the high road; he has criticized some of Clinton's policies, but never sunk to the level of personal attack as her campaign has done, playing on race and questioning his patriotism. He never mentioned that the Clintons consulted the Rev. Jeremiah Wright over their marital problems, at a time when she was attacking him for his association with Wright. He started out with less money, less support from party insiders, less name recognition, and he won. Yet you are so angry at him, you would rather vote for a man who would deny health insurance to your children? A man who would send your children to die in an endless war?

OK, you would dance in the streets to have a woman president. I would dance in the streets to have a woman or an African-American president. Both of these would show us something dramatically changed about America. Most of all, I want a president with integrity, and to me, Barack Obama is that candidate.

OK, you're deeply aggrieved that your candidate, who you think is entitled to the nomination, seems to have lost to someone who played fair and won.

I say, get over it. Sometimes your candidate loses. (My candidates almost always lose). Then, you vote for the next best candidate. You don't pout and whine and vote for somebody you really don't believe in. You don't stamp your feet and refuse to vote.

In short, you grow up.

PRESS RELEASE: Dissatisfied Clinton Supporters Flock to Third Party in Droves

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Dissatisfied Clinton Supporters Flock to Third Party in Droves

Moderate third party enjoys 400% increase in new members, as Hillary Clinton supporters search for other options for their preferred candidate; NAIP leadership “admires” Clinton and her ideals, offers her supporters a “new home.”

PHILADELPHIA, PA. -- JUNE 7, 2008 – In the wake of the divisive 2008 Democratic primaries. A growing number of Hillary Clinton supporters are searching for an alternative to the Democratic Party, which many believe has abandoned them and their ideals.

Over the past week, traffic on the sign-up board at the NAIP web site has been “off the charts,” according to the site administrator. Comments left by new sign-ups paint a picture of Democrats and Clinton supporters enraged at the treatment their candidate has received, and looking for alternatives.
“The Democratic Party Left Me”

Jen Rodgers is a typical example. A lifelong Democrat and mother of two with moderate views on issues, Rodgers reregistered in response to ‘the DNC’s coronation of a sexist, racist, elitist divider,” Senator Barak Obama, who Rogers sees as “unproven, unvetted, and unelectable.”
The Democrats’ decision to halve the votes of Florida and Michigan, and to award to Senator Obama delegates won by Senator Clinton, proved too much for Lynn Baker. “That was the last straw,” Baker says. “I didn’t leave the Democratic Party, The Democratic Party left me.”

No Obama

Other comments reveal a resolute refusal to voting for Senator Obama under any circumstances. John Polidoro, another lifelong Democrat, supported Obama at first, “But the more I looked into his past, the more I saw how crooked and dangerous he was,” says the middle class factory worker from Fairfax, Virginia. “I’ll vote for the NAIP ticket, but I’ll never vote for Obama.” The N A I P gives voters like John Polidoro a way to make a difference this November, and is actively courting them to help collect signatures so the NAIP can oppose Barack Obama in as many states as possible.

NAIP “Naturally A Good Fit” for Clinton Supporters

Founded in 2004, the N A I P is a grassroots, independent party that promotes principles of people above party and good government above good politics.

NAIP chairman Michael Thompson sees an affinity between his party and Clinton supporters. “Like us, Clinton supporters are expressing a desire to see strong, ethical candidates who represent the moderate views of most Americans. Like us, they are tired of politicians who hold radical views that are divisive and out-of-touch with America.”

NAIP advocates pragmatic, centrist solutions to issues facing America such as universal healthcare, strong public schools, energy independence and climate change, civil liberties and a strong middle class. NAIP has always appealed to moderate Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. “We’re naturally a good fit” for Clinton supporters, Thompson believes. “We offer Hillary Clinton supporters a new home.”

Ballot Access Efforts to Oppose Obama

As an active and determined political party, NAIP has a Ballot Access Task Force, which includes top authorities on ballot access law, that are actively working on ways to make a NAIP vote count for Clinton.

This November NAIP expects to be on the ballot in 42 to 46 states, according to Thompson, who also notes that Hillary supporters are encouraging the NAIP to field candidates across the country to challenge elected Obama superdelegates.

To support these initiatives, NAIP urgently needs registered voters to help collect petition signatures before the June deadlines expire in many states.

Hillary Is Always Welcome Here

The NAIP leadership admires Senator Clinton, and agrees that preventing Senator Obama’s election is paramount.
“We share Senator Clinton’s ideals, and we respect the tenacity and strength she has displayed during her campaign,” Thompson says, adding that the top spot on the NAIP ticket is Clinton’s whenever she wants it: “Hillary Clinton is always welcome here!”

The New American Independent Party, a grassroots Independent political party is seeking sustainable solutions and a more self-reliant America. For more on the New American Independent Party please visit its website at: http://www. newamericanindependent. com

The truth begins to seep out:

http://www.correntewire.com/documentary_proof_of_rbcs_stop_hillary_corruption

"It is clear that the RBC violated its own rules for political reasons – to stop Hillary Clinton. Without the opportunity to beat Clinton in one of the early states in a meaningful primary or caucus, Clinton’s advantages going into Super- Tuesday would have been impossible to beat. The corrupt officials of the RBC were part of a “stop Hillary” movement, and chose to ignore their own rules in order to make it possible for someone other than Hillary Clinton to get the nomination, and the complete and utter corruption of James Roosevelt, Alexis Herman, Alice Germond and the rest of Obama’s supporters on the RBC is no longer in doubt."

Now, and not a second before now, Hillary will be talked about positively in the media. Now that she is not a threat as the next President of the United States will can now look at her as the amazing force that she is. We can look at her as smart, savvy, tough, inventive, etc. The big boys of the media can exhale and lift her up as the "would be" that has changed history forever. Changed history for their granddaughters.

I think this is bullshit. I think we have a serious problem in this country with misogyny. I think we need to take a serious look at that.

Look for Hillary on the cover of Time and Newsweek soon!

Obviously a man of strong convictions......lol
That church was useful in establishing a power base for his political ambitions in Illinois but has obviously served its purpose.

In a good way, that is. It was like trying to take photos of a rock star!

Tween girls were everywhere, singing "Hillary.... Hilllllarrrrry...." as if they were dancing around a Maypole.

A few teenage boys wearing Obama stickers infiltrated the crowd. They were respectful. Mostly there with their Hillary supporting parents, I think.

It was a fabulous evening for our Madame President! (That is her in the turquoise suit... waving away from the camera. More pics in my photos, for those who would like to see!)

Aha! Now I know what it's like to be a "yokel."

I was thinking about two articles I read yesterday, and I had an "aha." I don't get those often... so I think it's worth noting here. Though Tribe is not the home of my political bloggery it is my "life blog."

An "aha" is a life changing event. So, here are the articles:

http://nymag.com/news/imperialcity/46658/

http://www.ft.com/cms/s/e22ab770-1ab8-11dd-aa67-0000779fd2ac,Authorised=false.html?_i_location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcms%2Fs%2F0%2Fe22ab770-1ab8-11dd-aa67-0000779fd2ac.html&_i_referer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.realclearpolitics.com%2F2008%2F05%2F06%2Findex.html

One a Barack fan. One a Hillary supporter. Both rather objectively, and humourously musing on the constituencies that have turned out to support either candidate. Politics does make strange bedfellows, you know. So... here we have he "liberal, highly educated" segment of the party lining up with African Americans of all class strata. While many white, educated, older women (like myself) are joining with the working class arm of the Dems.

Here's the "aha."

I, myself, am one of the educated, older, white women who crossed over to support the candidate of the working class. First time in my life, to be honest. And boy... did I learn something!

I learned that there are some serious reasons why the working class folk in swing states frequently jump ship and vote against their own economic interests .... by going red in the fall. Attitudes among the educated... yes I'll say it... "elite" in the Dem party are maddening to them. The perception is that noone can talk to the "ivory tower educated." They *know* what is best for us all. No amount of reasoning will change that. They simply will not hear... don't want to hear... the concerns of regular ole working people in the heartland.

My eyes have been opened. I realize, and am ashamned to admit, that I was once one of those smug know-it-alls who considered myself to know more than the "yokels." Or at least I acted that way. (How humbling.)

Please accept my apologies. It won't happen again. Believe me.

Amma

It's so easy to be a frustrated Hillary supporter. I am watching CNN right now and they have on the mayor of Hammond, Indiana. All the people from CNN keep asking him about Obama and how they send in their votes from the polls and do they send them in on time. He has brought it back to Hillary many times. Each time he brings it back to Hillary he gets cut off and asked about stupid shit like what time his polls opened in Hammond. At one point he said, "Listen, Hillary won ____ county that borders Chicago. I think that is significant. I am afraid that if Obama wins the delegate count we are going to be sending the weaker candidate for the nomination." It was immediately sent over to Larry King for questions.

So annoying!

I expected them to wait til after she wins Indiana to do this... but it seems they are pretty confident. Rec'd this from a fellow Hillstar today:

[It’s been some time since we worked together over in Ohio, but we did a good job! Now, it’s on to KY. I am e-mailing you all to invite you to Hillary Clinton’s official office opening in Northern KY. Our office celebration will be on May 1st from 5:30-7:30 and we are conveniently located right over the river in Covington, KY at:

302 Court Street
Covington, KY.

We could really use your help with our campaign in Northern KY, so please stop by our office opening and enjoy some food and drinks and sign up to volunteer. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at 859-663-0035. I hope to see all of you again real soon.]

But there are *still* 2 more days before the close of the April reporting period.

And there is only *one* week until the crucial Indiana primary. She must win Indiana to continue in the race.

*So I will match the next $250 (there goes my Chanukah/Christmas present!) that you guys donate by the end of the day Wednesday!* Just in case you forgot, you can donate by credit card using this link or go directly to her website, www.hillaryclinton.com/contribute/FFEU.

If anyone can spare $25... now is the time!

I just turned on the CBS news and they projected (at 5:58pm Arizona time) that Hillary will win Pennsylvania! Whoo hooo!

Then the f*ckers followed it up with a big "Yeah but" saying that Obama has a lot of money and Hillary is in debt. What losers. Can't they EVER admit she is a viable candidate?!!!

Of course when I logged on my Yahoo page said it was still too close to call the race. Go Hillary go!

I'll be throwing more money her way, even though I can't give much!

Hillary and the Fourth Wave of Feminism

Such a good article! And some of the responses to it actually illustrate it's truth.

http://nymag.com/news/features/46011/

""As the Pennsylvania primary nears, pundits and party members are again, as they did before Ohio and Texas, calling for Clinton to step down. (“The model of female self-sacrifice is deeply embedded in our culture,” notes Bennetts.) And indeed it’s becoming increasingly difficult to see how this political cycle could end with her victorious. It is perhaps cold comfort to say that if she loses the nomination, her candidacy leaves behind a legacy of reawakened feminism—the fourth wave, if you will. But this is in fact what is happening.

The past few months have been like an extended consciousness-raising session, to use a retro phrase that would have once made most of us cringe. We’ve parsed the gender politics of the campaign with other women in the office, at parties, over e-mail, and now we’re starting to parse the gender politics of our lives. This is, admittedly, depressing: How can we be confronting the same issues, all these years later? But it’s also exciting. It feels as if a window has been opened in a stuffy, long-sealed room. There is a thrill at the collective realization. Now the question is, what next? ""

So many excellent quotes... but I'll choose these two paragraphs:

[The Slippery Slope of Silencings

Yes, guys like this pick on other men's books too, and people of both genders pop up at events to hold forth on irrelevant things and conspiracy theories, but the out-and-out confrontational confidence of the totally ignorant is, in my experience, gendered. Men explain things to me, and other women, whether or not they know what they're talking about. Some men.

Every woman knows what I'm talking about. It's the presumption that makes it hard, at times, for any woman in any field; that keeps women from speaking up and from being heard when they dare; that crushes young women into silence by indicating, the way harassment on the street does, that this is not their world. It trains us in self-doubt and self-limitation just as it exercises men's unsupported overconfidence.]

To explain my utter disdain for Keith Olbermann's recent and condescending tirade at a U.S. Senator that happens to be female. How dare that S.O.B. talk to ANY Senator, about how to run a campaign, as if she were a seven year old. If you do not know what I am talking about:

African American Studies prof. tells us why she is voting Clinton (very powerful.)

Ms. Johnson-Baily tells us "I have been called a Mammy so much over these last few weeks as I've voiced my support for Senator Clinton that I have started sending out this response to my Black girlfriends who call me a race traitor." Here's the letter:

Mammy or Conscious Black Woman?

I do question Black women who think of me as a race traitor for being a Clinton supporter, especially those who can’t discuss either candidate’s platform. I wonder how they can blindly choose race loyalty over their racial and gender interests. Here are my thoughts.

I don't feel like a Mammy to Senator Clinton, as Melissa Harris-Lacewell of Princeton claimed in her op ed piece, Mammy Goes to Washington, of Black women who support Clinton. What I am is the invisible unheard Black woman voter who is trampled in the media dash to simplify racial politics. I can't give my loyalty to any person who takes my vote for granted and won’t bring me and my issues out in the light of day. Here are my thoughts.

1. Senator Clinton is not new to me or to Blacks. She worked with Marian Wright Eldeman back in the 70s for children's rights (esp. Black children). She was involved in the inception of One America, The President's Commission on Race headed by John Hope Franklin.

2. Senator Clinton has been in the fight to open the doors for more women and Blacks. Senator Clinton has a Black woman campaign manager. She campaigned for Obama when he 1st ran for Senate. She still keeps a picture of Obama and his family from that campaign on her desk. Her office was the 1st place that Senator Obama visited when he was newly elected. He thought so highly of her that he asked her to be his mentor. She mentored him during his first year in the Senate.

3. Unlike most other First ladies who were just attached, Senator Clinton had an office in the West Wing and has actually worked on initiatives for people of color and women. She has traveled the world representing the U.S. and actually broken bread with international dignitaries like Bhutto.

4. Clinton has also disagreed with her spouse. She supported gays in the military, no questions asked. I’m clear that I’m not electing Bill Clinton. I’m clear that Senator Clinton does not get all of my issues. But I’m also clear that she is not ignoring them and taking me for granted in an effort to appease the masses.

5. Senator Clinton has spoken out on race, while Senator Obama said has tried to ingratiate himself to those who believe in the power of a colorblind society. Obama has said that class was more in play than race in the Jena 6 incidents; he has said that Blacks are 90% on the way to equality; and Obama has said that the federal government’s incompetence during Katrina was colorblind.

A Black man who believes such things may share the dailiness of being Black in America with me, but he and I have certainly interpreted these experiences differently. A Black man who believes such things can not take my support for granted. I can not give him a pass on these issues because of the color of his skin.

6. Black women colleagues, professors, have given me their singular reasons for voting for Obama. They have stated respectively: I’m voting for him because he’s Black; I’m voting for him because I want to see Michelle Obama as the 1st lady; I’m voting for him because I don’t like the way the Clintons have criticized him; I’m voting for Obama because she’s too intense, too serious; I’m voting for him because he’s a good speaker and excites the crowd; I’m voting against her because she cried, a White woman’s tactic to get her way. Surely there are good reasons to vote for Obama. The ones listed are not among them.

7. My White colleagues who serve with me on diversity committees have reasoned their Obama vote thusly: he’s the 1st national Black leader/politician that doesn’t make me feel guilty; Obama sees beyond race and has gone beyond race; voting for Obama absolves me of my last vestiges of White guilt. I find these reasons for choosing heartwarming easily digestible Blackness offensive.

8. I ask the question that Tavis Smiley asked Senator Kennedy, "Why is it that all these powerful White men have lined up behind Obama and most of the Black Caucus is lined up behind Senator Clinton?"

9. I ask further, "Do powerful White men come bearing gifts wanting nothing in return?" The Kennedy that I most respect because he has been in the trenches is Robert Kennedy's son, who is supporting Senator Clinton and worked for her in CA. But that didn't make the news either.

10. I think we as Black people are too uncritical of our own. We are so desperate to see a good Black man we can believe in after the likes of O J, Uncle Clarence, and Marion Barry. Yes Obama is squeaky clean, but only a few years on the national scene and he's ready to go?

11. I don't buy the Kennedy comparison. Obama is no President Kennedy -- who by the way had many more years on the national scene when he decided to run. And I remember the real Kennedy who was pulled kicking and screaming into Civil Rights by Martin Luther King, Jr., not the Kennedy of the myth. I also remember the Southern, flawed, Johnson who had the political clout to twist arms to make Civil Rights a reality. But Johnson only did so because he had no choice, because King was a master strategist, and because even Johnson believed the time had come. I lived this history and won’t have it reinterpreted for me.

In closing, I feel like a woman who has been where Clinton has been, abandoned by women who in their heart of hearts, can't quite live their self-love because they were so socialized into loving and caring for everyone else before themselves, especially men. And I’ve been someplace that Senator Clinton has not been. I’ve been called names, especially by my Sistahs, who feel like I’m choosing a White woman over a Black man. I love Black men. I have loved the same one for 37 years. And I'm not afraid of Black men with power. I also live with this same Black man who has power, a CEO. If this were not a time of crisis and 10 years down the road, I might consider the Obama band wagon, but not today.

I don’t feel like a Black woman who is choosing gender over race. I feel like a Black woman with an awareness of just how much gender matters. I still know that women make 71 cents to the $1.00 that men make when we have the same education and experience and that we make even less if we’re Black women. I know that it is women who are raped, assaulted, and not equally protected by the courts in the workplace and regarding domestic matters. I know that it is women’s pain that the press exploits and it is women who the press derides if we are too powerful and out of our place.

No debate, the Clinton camp has made steps that have been scrutinized and over-analyzed and interpreted and they have not been given the benefit of the doubt-- something they mistakenly believed that they had earned from the Black community. Yes I see the racism, unintentional or not, in some of the things said by Clinton supporters during this primary season. But I can also see the hidden codes coming from the other side too. I see codes that play on my Black pain and oppression. Oprah used hidden codes to play on our pain when she asked, "Where would I be if I had listened to people (Whites) when they told me that it was not my time/turn?” I won’t apply TV mis/standards or Oprah’s life experience to mine. I like to compare apples with apples. If I remember correctly people said the same of John Edwards his first time out -- that he was not ready and that it was not his time and it was not considered racist, just a critique.

In these times of crisis, I choose experience over inspiration. Nobody wants red states and blue states; everybody wants hope; but I want that and more. It's like a choice between the high school girl who is the class good girl, the valedictorian, the person who has worked so hard for the class over four years of high school. She's done most things right. And then a new boy moves to town. He looks good, he's popular, he has less baggage, and he speaks better. He says appealing things. She gives too much detail and she is sort of boring. What the heck? Let's vote for him.

Well I've been in this situation in the workplace -- passed over by less qualified men, Black and White, perceived as more personable. And there were so many good reasons -- she seems radical, she talks too much, she seems mean, people don't really like her, she’s probably a feminist, and she's a “B”. Sound familiar? And even though it is now packaged differently, I still recognize it and it hurts me as a woman.

I don't feel like a Mammy to Senator Clinton. If you want to talk female stereotypes, I don’t want be a mistress to Obama -- never mentioned, but taken for granted. I feel that I am making an informed choice. I choose the mentor over the protégé. I choose to be an empowered, conscious, and informed modern Black woman, not one who is having her pain played on by people who have not demonstrated that they hear me or value me – just people who want my vote and expect it or else.

"The more things change, the more they stay the same" is what the French phrase means, and I saw this tendency borne out today while reading the Wikipedia entry about Marie Antoinette.

I was looking up the tale told about her in which she was alleged to have said, *Qu’ils mangent de la brioche*, or "Let them eat cake." (Turns out that a longer version of that quip was more likely said by the wife of Louis XIV, rather than by Antoinette, who was the wife of Louis XVI, but it isn't reliably documented that she said any such thing, either.)

It's been over 30 years since I studied French history in high school, so I followed the Wikipedia link to her and got a little bit caught up.

King Louie was the king of France
before the revolu-shy-on,
(Way, haul away, we'll haul away, JOE!)
But then he got his head cut off,
which spoiled his constitu-shy-on.
(Way, haul away, we'll haul away, JOE!)

--short-haul sea chantey

The same fate befell Marie Antoinette, the culmination of a (short) lifetime of merciless dogging by the Third Estate, the social class below the royalty and the aristocracy who hated her because she was Austrian. Ironically, she had been married off to the future King of France in hopes of facilitating an alliance between the historical enemies. It barely worked in the royal court, let alone in the streets.

It was the commoners who fancied themselves the ones in the know and who published and read the gossip-rags known as the *libelles* (yes, that's right, as in "libel") which dissed Hillary, I mean Marie Antoinette, relentlessly.

As Craig Ferguson would leer, "Remiiiind you of anyone???" Sophomoric commoners who have no real conduits to the elusive facts... but technology sufficient not to let their factlessness hinder them broadcasting their unedited take on things???

Reading the decidedly sympathetic article about Marie Antoinette and the way she was subjected to years of accusations and innuendo on all fronts made me realize that high-profile women have probably always been and probably always will be subjected to incessant intrusion and misrepresentation and maliciousness. In Marie Antoinette's story I saw a lot of parallels to Hillary Clinton and the what-makes-you-think-they're-liberal? media/Republican/patriarchal conspiracy against her.

It makes me sick to realize it, but it ain't gonna change soon. Not in the US, not without some kind of extraordinary intervention. *Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.* The more things change, the more they stay the same.

More and More about Anti-Clinton bias in the news media:

http://www.sptimes.com/2008/03/09/Opinion/Media_tainted_by_anti.shtml

[If you do not believe me, go back and reread your newspapers and magazines. Order transcripts of your network nightly news and read them. I guarantee that you will hear a lot of Hillary bashing and a whole lot Obama serenading.

The most surprising finding, at least to me, was the pervasive bias in coverage of the two candidates' foreign policy. "When it comes to foreign policy coverage - perhaps the most important issue in the coming election," Shorenstein wrote in his memo, "the media monitoring group, Media Tenor, found that there was not a single positive story about Hillary Clinton and foreign policy in the month of February."

If we only had anecdotal evidence, I would be willing to question, or even dismiss, claims of media bias against Clinton. But each watchdog group conducted content analyses and crunched the numbers.

When I conducted my own analysis, I found that real or perceived bad news about Clinton earned front-page placement more often than for Obama. Rarely have I seen a story about Obama's influence-peddling pal from Chicago, Tony Rezko, on the front page. Nor have I seen much on the front page about Obama's linguistic sleight of hand with NAFTA and the Canadians. ]

Pundits seem to be making an awful fuss over the tendency of Hillary to do well in surveys and exit polls among people who don't have college educations--they as much as say that Obama is the college graduates' choice. They seem particularly gleeful about saying such things about Ohioans, who are such inbred backwater half-wits anyway--everybody knows that!

I (with my masters degree and 43 years of Ohio residency under my belt) am getting pretty tired of the implication that if I were better educated, I'd "ditch the b*tch and make the switch," so to speak.

Are you a college-educated Hillary fan?

Let me be first in line to say, "Yes!" (That's one.)

I'll be damned. I thought Obama was going to take Ohio, but I guess that's because I live in Franklin County, where Obama did in fact clobber her. There have been Obamaphile signs everywhere around town, and hardly any for Hillary, and people standing at street corners holding signs for days. It was, frankly, getting a little maudlin.

But at this writing CBS and CNN have called Hillary by 57%.

[MINING LAW OF 1872:

In November 2007, Obama came out against a bill that would have reformed the notorious Mining Law of 1872. The current statute, signed into law by Ulysses Grant, allows mining companies to pay a nominal fee, as little as $2.50 an acre, to mine for hardrock minerals like gold, silver, and copper without paying royalties. Yearly profits for mining hardrock on public lands is estimated to be in excess of $1 billion a year according to Earthworks, a group that monitors the industry. Not surprisingly, the industry spends freely when it comes to lobbying: an estimated $60 million between 1998-2004 according to The Center on Public Integrity. And it appears to be paying off, yet again.

The Hardrock Mining and Reclamation Act of 2007 would have finally overhauled the law and allowed American taxpayers to reap part of the royalties (4 percent of gross revenue on existing mining operations and 8 percent on new ones). The bill provided a revenue source to cleanup abandoned hardrock mines, which is likely to cost taxpayers over $50 million, and addressed health and safety concerns in the 11 affected western states.

Later it came to light that one of Obama’s key advisors in Nevada is a Nevada-based lobbyist in the employ of various mining companies (CBS News “Obama’s Position On Mining Law Questioned. Democrat Shares Position with Mining Executives Who Employ Lobbyist Advising Him,” November 14, 2007).

REGULATING NUCLEAR INDUSTRY:

The New York Times reported that, while campaigning in Iowa in December 2007, Obama boasted that he had passed a bill requiring nuclear plants to promptly report radioactive leaks. This came after residents of his home state of Illinois complained they were not told of leaks that occurred at a nuclear plant operated by Exelon Corporation.

The truth, however, was that Obama allowed the bill to be amended in Committee by Senate Republicans, replacing language mandating reporting with verbiage that merely offered guidance to regulators on how to address unreported leaks. The story noted that even this version of Obama’s bill failed to pass the Senate, so it was unclear why Obama was claiming to have passed the legislation. The February 3, 2008 The New York Times article titled “Nuclear Leaks and Response Tested Obama in Senate” by Mike McIntire also noted the opinion of one of Obama’s constituents, which was hardly enthusiastic about Obama’s legislative efforts:

"Senator Obama's staff was sending us copies of the bill to review, and we could see it weakening with each successive draft," said Joe Cosgrove, a park district director in Will County, Ill., where low-level radioactive runoff had turned up in groundwater. "The teeth were just taken out of it."

As it turns out, the New York Times story noted: “Since 2003, executives and employees of Exelon, which is based in Illinois, have contributed at least $227,000 to Mr. Obama’s campaigns for the United States Senate and for president. Two top Exelon officials, Frank M. Clark, executive vice president, and John W. Rogers Jr., a director, are among his largest fund-raisers.”

ENERGY POLICY:

On energy policy, it turns out Obama is a big supporter of corn-based ethanol which is well known for being an energy-intensive crop to grow. It is estimated that seven barrels of oil are required to produce eight barrels of corn ethanol, according to research by the Cato Institute. Ethanol’s impact on climate change is nominal and isn’t “green” according to Alisa Gravitz, Co-op America executive director. “It simply isn’t a major improvement over gasoline when it comes to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.” A 2006 University of Minnesota study by Jason Hill and David Tilman, and an earlier study published in BioScience in 2005, concur. (There’s even concern that a reliance on corn-based ethanol would lead to higher food prices.)

So why would Obama be touting this as a solution to our oil dependency? Could it have something to do with the fact that the first presidential primary is located in Iowa, corn capitol of the country? In legislative terms this means Obama voted in favor of $8 billion worth of corn subsidies in 2006 alone, when most of that money should have been committed to alternative energy sources such as solar, tidal and wind.]

And that is the tip of the iceburg. Read the rest here:

Women and the Bosses they Train: Last Night's Debate

Hillary did just what Ted Strickland told her to do in last night's debate. She come out as the fighter that she really is... for Universal Health Care, for ending the war in Iraq, for revising NAFTA, for creating Green Collar jobs in Ohio. I will keep my paws crossed that Mr. Strickland knows Ohio as well as he thinks he does.

Her tough talk did appeal to ME. It was just what I wanted to see! I even called for it in some of my DU posts yesterday. But, I am not sure how many men could handle it. My own DH seemed mildly put off by it. Not intellectually, but viscerally. I think she hits the "mommy button" for him. That worries me a bit. That said, we both saw this as a strong performance by Hillary. On the issues she was top dog for sure.

But, I have to admit, I also saw the best debate of Barack's career heretofore. After 20 debates, he is learning well from Sen. Clinton.... about how to stick to the issues and cut the Care Bear sing-a-longs. He seems to be delving more deeply into his policies than ever before. In the end, I fear, Hillary has done just what sooooo many women all over this country do: train the men who will become our bosses.

I am heartsick at the prospect that this election is being stolen out from under her.... by the MSM's pandering to Obama. And the party elders (all men) forsaking her. I'm not surprised, tho. It's an old song. If you are a woman, and you have ever trained your future (male) boss.... you know exactly want I mean.

I have returned to news sources outside of the U.S. for my political news. It's been serving me quite well. I found out, from Canada, that Ellen DeGeneres is supporting Hillary:
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/080226/entertainment/clinton_ellen_degeneres_1

I've discovered that London knew (before the US media did?) that the Clinton Camp had "responded swiftly" to deny accusations of having any part in circulating Obama's "muslim smear photo."
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article3433929.ece
(CNN and FOX still aren't telling us about the response ..... I guess it's too late, and they figure the damage is done? Hooray for their Dem. dream candidate! Touche for Mr. McCain.)

The Brits are actually quite entertained by the US electoral process at this moment. They are seeing the inevitable "Barack-lash""
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article3428110.ece

http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/commentators/dominic-lawson/dominic-lawson-obama-must-beware-of-turning-into-a-cult-787298.html
and apparently hoping it comes sooner, than later. I mean, U.S. foreign policy is not really a laughing matter for them.

On a more personal note, I unfriended a Tribe member for posting anti-Hillary propaganda in my blog yesterday. As has always been the case, that I will not tolerate overt hatred in my blog.... at any time. I don't post smears about Barack Obama. And I certainly don't want to see them posted about the candidate I support. Credible news source information is fine. But... a RWM hate video calling the Clintons liars and theives? Nope, not in my blog.

Dems should simply not be treating one another that way.

Visibility Tactics (NEED SUGGESTIONS)

What works and what doesn't...... We have 12 days to go in OH and we want a BIG win for HIll!!!

I feel phone calling to be a bit of an antiquated tactic. And I wish the Camp did not rely on it so heavily. Many, many people do not have land lines that are listed in directories any more. And cell numbers change quite frequently. So, I wonder how many folks we can actually expect to reach this way?

Any thoughts on that?

I think we have to get out there with the buttons, yard signs, bumper stickers...... and rally as often as we can.

I also heard that the Obama camp pays students to work for them. Then they drop off busloads of 'em, in heavily trafficked areas, to leaflet. Has anyone seen this? I was told that in California it was outright disruptive.

Looking for any and all suggestions!

Ohio Hillstar not giving up!

I went to my first Hillstars meeting last evening. Here in SW Ohio, we have many activities planned to boost Hill's visibility over the next two and a half weeks. I'll be working the phone banks, attending rallies, organizing a "watch the debate" party. Her polling is very positive here at this point. And we do intend to keep it that way!

I have always been of a mind that we, as a party, would benefit most by having a Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton ticket in 2008. I am comfortable with either combination. I can see wisdom in our having Hill at the top, or bottom of the ticket.

So, what is important to me NOW.... is to keep her in the running, to let the DNC, the DLC, and the Obama people know that the near 50% of Americans who like, and vote for Hillary WANT her on the 2008 democratic ticket. We don't want her treated like an asterisk. Or like a pariah. We want her in the White House WITH her real solutions for our real problems..... to balance out Obama's enthusiasm and fresh, new constituencies. We don't want our party "The Democratic Party" hijacked by independents and soft republicans. We welcome them, of course... but this is not about them.

I hear alot of nay-saying about whether Hill and Barack can work together. I say Humbug! If they want to, of course they can! JFK worked with LBJ, didn't he? Even after a bitter battle for top of *that* ticket. Barack and Hillary keep invoking their names. Let's hold their feet to the fire on this! If JFK and LBJ could do it, then BHO and HRC can too! I know Hill is mature enough to do it. I've been watching her for a couple of decades. I have to trust that Barack is also mature enough to understand the need for a coalition here. To be a "uniter, not a divider."

Hillary and Barack, let's bring America together! Let's start with the Dem Party!! As soon as we allow the people of OH, TX and PA to have their voices heard!

(Oh, speaking of NOW. The National Organization for Women will be here in Ohio promote Hill next week. That's the word on the streets!)

My thoughts are, and have been, that the powers at be.....(the republicans, the machine, press, etc) want Obama.

He is young, idealistic, green, and has not any true experience in pushing anything through(bills, etc). Think of how easy it would be for the 'elders', more experienced goverment workers, Dick Cheneys and henchmen for them to push him around. To do their bidding.

They would NEVER be able to do that to our Hillary!!!!

I used to believe in our system, and would think of myself as a conspiracy theorist, BUT after the first "W" election.....

BTW, to all those who say Hil is 'bitch', these same characteristics would be noble for a man in your eyes.

Excellent study for those who care about demographic trend studies:

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/horseraceblog/2008/02/the_democratic_race_moving_for.html

Plus:

1) It is looking increasingly likely that FLA and MI will seeking a DNC hearing to re-allocate their delegates, and some kind of agreement will be struck.

2) Ohio has a long and rather sadistic history of giving a lashing to "frontrunners." If we stay true to form... and Hillary comes to Ohio as the underdog, she *could* take Ohio in a landslide. No guarantees. But look at the current polling numbers:
A Measure of Hillary's Character

Something that is significant to me that I think Hillary gets short shrift for is her personal integrity and the character that was formed in her in the fires of Interngate and the impeachment process.

I've seen it reported by people who have no political axes to grind that Hillary really didn't know that Bill had been carrying on with Monica, and that when he swore to her that he hadn't "had sex" with Monica, that Hillary believed him. When it became unquestionable that he had lied, she was, I am willing to believe, blindsided by the revelation.

In those last couple horrible years of the Clinton presidency, I was among those who kept repeating, "It was grounds for divorce, not for impeachment--and if Hillary's not dragging him into court, neither should you be, you vengeful bastards."

The thing is, it *was* grounds for divorce. And Hillary grew from it. She survived, she kept her dignity, she learned... by many accounts, she forgave. (I expected her to dump him once they were out of the White House, but she really seems to like him, or to find something about him redeeming enough to put up with him.)

I think Hillary was a lot better role model, in some ways, than Jackie O--JFK's philandering wasn't nearly as scandalous during his presidency as Bill's was during his. It didn't really become common knowledge until Jackie was married to Aristotle Onassis and it was all behind her.

Jackie maintained her dignity *and* her glamour. Her class privilege as well as her Kennedy cachet protected her in ways unavailable to Hillary: Hill's humiliation was much more immediate and much more public. She dealt with the whole thing on a world stage.

My sister was humiliated by the breakdown of her marriage, and her ex wasn't even, as far as anyone can document, philandering; he was just a consummate jerk. I'm impressed enough with her private handling of her private crisis; Hillary didn't have the luxury of *any* privacy at all.

Women don't get credit for their strength, and Hillary is certainly not getting credit for hers.

Ironically, Evangelicals are very fond of preaching about how the "Refiner's fire" builds character... and yet they give Hillary no credit for the character that her public, unrelenting, devastating trials wrought in her.

And Liberals aren't giving her enough credit, when she speaks of her "experience," for the personal experiences through which she has triumphed.

Evangelicals are also fond of quoting the Gospels in which Jesus said, "The one who is faithful in a little thing is faithful also in much," but they give her no credit for having handled her public crisis with the grace with which she did it.

I submit that after going through the private *and* public *and* emotional *and* physical *and* administrative nightmare she went through during the years of the Monica scandal and the brutal impeachment process, she may just consider anything that Iraq or Iran or the Republicans can throw at her to be a walk in the park.

I dunno--whaddo I know? I'm just sayin'.

to vote "present" in November.

If this kind of rhetoric doesn't stop:

blogs.abcnews.com/political...ton-d.html

blogs.abcnews.com/political...ntons.html

Mr. Obama needs to understand something. We, the "older" more established base of the Dem party have our opinions too. He is bashing, not only the Clintons... but those of us who voted for Bill and will vote for Hillary. Those who he thinks are "in the bag" to vote for him.

The list of Clinton accomplishments is quite long. I won't post them all here.

Mr. Obama can expect to get less in the General Election, than the 47% he thinks Hillary can get, if he doesn't knock this off. And NOW.

I am fed up,
Maureen Dowd's Recent Comments on Obligations

An Obamaphile was kind enough to post to my blog a column by Maureen Dowd, dated 2/6, in which she said that Hillary thinks that the Dems owe her, or at least Bill owes her and the Dems owe Bill.

Well. They do.

The Dems have ****ed it up twice now. They let Bill hang out to dry, and now they're letting revisionist history prevail about him. He survived, and they're giving him no credit for it. What, do they think that the Pubs will ever forget Watergate? (Ask any Atlantan if they don't know who Sherman was...) Meanwhile, the Dems--let alone the Pubs--twiddle their thumbs while W fiddles while Iraq burns. W's right up there with Milosevic, and Congress sits on its hands. But that's another rant.

The Dems owe Hillary: she, of all people, showed the most character in the face of Interngate, and I think she's grown the most from the mistakes of the Clinton administration. The people who are expecting the same-old-same-old from someone who has gone through menopause, not to mention 16 years since the first Clinton presidency began, are as stupid as Karl Rove and the Swift Boaters hoped the people of the US would be: you say "flip-flop," I say "learn."

And again I ask, as I've asked in my own blog, why isn't it okay for Bill to support her campaign? Forget the fact that he's her husband (he was able to do so while his intern was on her knees in front of him...)--he's a former president! His opinion is allowed to count for something.

I'm really steamed at the Dems who begrudge him his judgment on this matter.

We all knew in the '90s that the Clinton deal was that she would get him in the White House and then he would get her in. Was anybody really fooled when she moved to New York to become a Senator? (Where's the cachet in being a Senator from Arkansas when you can have NY's visibility?)

Dowd's column was just mean-spirited, and I don't know why she felt the need to be so. Or why
