Performance

So a good friend of mine has been intrigued by my bellydance and he wants me to be sort of a "back-up" dancer at a hip-hop showcase he's doing next month. I'm totally down for this, but I'm looking for a way to fuse the two in such a way as to both showcase my skills and complement his musical style, but not look like the backup dancer ho in the video, know what I mean??

Any suggestions?

I'd be more help if I knew his sound. I would definitely dress to fit a combination of both styles, and be more aware of what moves you are using and avoid the moves that make the backup dancer ho in the videos look like a ho. *chuckles* That's the best advice I can give you at the moment.

    Surayyah this is wonderful!

In my opinion, your friend wanted you for the showcase because your dance style is not the "ho" style. Practice dancing to his music without any fusion first and video it and see if that's what he wants. If he wants more hip hop movements in your dance, let us know and we'll point you in the right direction.

Great point Aneaj. I always start out any fusion using pure BD moves. Then as I get to know my music more, depending on the audience and costuming, I go and tweak it from there. Mostly though I find that a lot of it has to do with how comfortable you are with the music. Obviously you want to add LOTS of attitude over your BD moves, that is one very important factor in doing Hip Hop fusion. Let us know how it goes - have fun!!

So...update on this. The back-up dance thing fell through because there just wasn't enough time to get it worked out before the show last weekend. But.....another friend of mine, who actually produced the whole showcase called and wants my whole troupe to be featured at their show in March. She's themed the whole event after us, calling it "The Mirage" and we'll be doing a drum solo together and then improv-ing to the various live performances. I am so psyched!! I am really excited that the whole troupe gets to be a part of this!!

I hope so. I just downloaded that remix of the "Bellydancer, Snakecharmer" song and am currently obsessed with it. I think that would be an awesome for a hip hip/fusion dance!

I found it on limewire. The remix is by Bassnectar. I really want to hear the original song by Kardinall Offishall featuring Pharrell, but I can't find it!

That's the one I have! I got it when it first came out, they were giving the demo's out at my favorite dancehall club. Try looking in your local used/singles section - mine has about 3 different versions.
