Question of the Week - 6/8/08
What's the oldest thing you own, and where did it come from?
The oldest thing I own is more than a century old! It's a palm-sized book of Catholic devotions and instructions published in 1901. It's a gorgeous book with an illustrated hard cover that closes with a latch. There's a mother of pearl and gold crucifix recessed into the inside of the front cover, and the pages have a gilded edge.
It was given to me by my mother, who got it as a gift from her aunt for her first communion.

Re: Oldest?
Mon, June 9, 2008 - 7:45 AMI have a souvenir of a shell and seahorse made into maybe an ashtray(?) from Veracruz in Mexico given to me by my uncle. It was from the early 1900s-1920s (not sure when he got married). He got it there when he and his wife went on their honeymoon. It really is the coolest thing. -

Mon, June 9, 2008 - 7:46 AMThat would probably have to be my Gillette Safety Razor. it is almost 100 years old (Circa 1910 per the serial number). It is a three piece razor that holds the double edged blades. It is in a brass embossed case that has a purple lining. Also in the case is a smaller box that holds extra blades. There are still the original blades in the case!! I also have the fabric pouch that holds the whole thing, but the fabric has gotten dirty and dry rotted.
I bought it at an antique store in Upland, CA many years ago.... -

Mon, June 9, 2008 - 8:46 AMI have an old razor kind of like that. I only have the actual razor, though...no blades or case. It belonged to my grandfather. The top where the blades go is hinged, and it opens outward when you turn the handle...
